After initially starting with a 4-1-4-1 with Dallas at left back (top of the picture) Leeds found it difficult to get Phillips on the ball as he was being man marked by Samuelsen. Hull also pushed Wilks inside as an inside forward (inbetween Cooper and Dallas).
Leeds combatted this by going to a back three of Ayling, Cooper and White with Phillips being joined in midfield by Dallas who played further forward. This allowed Leeds to build up better from the back. The 2nd goal (below) is a perfect example of Leeds in a 3-1-3-3 formation.
Leeds played a number of variants of the 3-3-1-3 also including a lopsided 2-3-5 at times with Ayling playing as a right centre back and wingback. This can be seen below with the average positions. Costa pushing high meant that Hull City had to defend deep on their left side.
Leeds made the switch around the 15th minute but it took until the second half for players to fully understand the new tactical change. Once the second goal went in, it allowed the players to play with freedom and interchange positions.
