LeedsUnited

Wise men deliver Christmas points

WHETHER it was Jonny Howson, Seb Carole or Bristol Rovers defender Steve Elliott that got the crucial touch it did not matter â€" Leeds United had the early Christmas present they wanted with a winning goal and three points on Saturday.
It took the Whites some time to get hold of their latest League One game at Elland Road, but another of their big finishes saw them collect their tenth win from 11 home league games.
The single goal that beat Bristol Rovers came six minutes from time when substitute Seb Carole sent an effort towards goal and the ball was drawn into the net at the Kop end following a deflection off either Howson or visitors' defender Elliott.
Morley teenager Howson was immediately credited as scorer and would be delighted to have his first senior goal at Elland Road whichever way it came, but it seems unlikely he will be allowed to keep it.
It was not his best game in a Leeds shirt as he struggled to impose himself on the game after being handed a starting role in the absence of injured Jonathan Douglas. But perseverance is an added quality to his game and in that respect he is the same as this never say die United team.
After an hour or so of struggle against a good footballing side, the Whites upped their game following a couple of inspired substitutions by Dennis Wise. In an effort to break the deadlock and the stranglehold Rovers appeared to have on the game, the manager threw on attackers Tore Andre Flo and Seb Carole for wide men Ian Westlake and David Prutton.
Suddenly the visitors were back pedaling, the chances began to arrive and after Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol failed to find the net with headers Leeds got their scrambled winner. Perhaps in the end they just about deserved their luck and they enjoyed a bit of keep ball in the closing stages to make sure of a win that lifted them up into third place, just one point behind top two Nottingham Forest and Swansea, the latter having their game at promotion rivals Carlisle postponed.
Earlier in the game although the lively Beckford had hit the crossbar and side netting with great efforts it was Bristol who had played the better football. Their best chance fell to striker Sean Rigg who raced through on a one on one with Casper Ankergren only for the United keeper to pull off a terrific save.
Another Ankergren save denied Rovers' Leeds fan Lewis Haldane and the visitors could have taken the lead several times had it not been for some timely interceptions from Rui Marques who was outstanding in holding United together at the back in the face of some strong pressure.

Biggest ever Leeds United shirt unveiled

Darren Mellor, Paul Johnstone and John Moran.

LEEDS United's proud history makes their famous white shirt a difficult one to fill.
Now that's more true than ever before, thanks to the efforts of fan John Moran.
John, 37, has paid a Far East textiles firm hundreds of pounds to produce what is thought to be the world's biggest replica shirt.
Weighing in at a whopping NINE STONE, it measures 50ft by 40ft and has to be carted about in a reinforced bag that's normally used in the building trade.
The shirt, which is flame retardant and made from a gauze-type material, was due to be unveiled before promotion-chasing United's League One home game with Bristol Rovers today.
Supporters will be asked to pass it along the bottom tier of Elland Road's East Stand before kick-off.
And John hopes its journey between the Revie and South stands will become as much of a matchday tradition as the playing of Leeds anthem Marching On Together.
He said: "Everyone I've spoken to is really excited about it. With any luck we'll end up doing it before every home game.
"It should look pretty spectacular â€" although no doubt there'll be a few teething problems!"
John, a Royal Mail manager from Alwoodley Gates, Leeds, came up with the idea of having the shirt made during a drink with a pal.
"We were talking about how well the season was going and what we could do to celebrate it," he said.
"First of all we thought about getting a massive flag, like they have on Liverpool's Kop. As soon as we got this image of a huge Leeds top in our heads, though, we knew that was the one."
John initially looked into the possibility of manufacturing the shirt in Britain, but it would have proved too expensive.
So instead he took time out during a holiday in Thailand with his girlfriend to set up a cheaper deal with a local company.
He met half the £1,200 cost of producing the shirt and shipping it back to the UK, while the rest of the money was put up by United sponsor Red Kite.
A Leeds spokesman today praised John's dedication, saying: "This is another case of one of our many terrific fans going that extra mile to show their support for the club."

United leave it late

Deprived of 15 points and apparently without a friend in English football, Leeds United can console themselves with the realisation that their portion of luck has been generous this season.
So adept are Leeds at producing late goals of vital importance that the club are now finding new ways of doing it.
A deflected free-kick from Alan Thompson salvaged a 1-1 draw at Walsall last weekend, and it took an own goal in the closing stages yesterday to secure victory over a Bristol Rovers team who were worth more than the 1-0 defeat inflicted on them.
The ways and means of their performances may change, but United's results rarely do.
Yesterday's win was their 10th of the season at Elland Road and their 16th in all, and only one point separates the club from the top of League One. Dennis Wise's ambition of reaching first place by New Year's Day is once again achievable.
United's winner came in the 84th minute yesterday, and just when two points seemed to be slipping from their grasp.
Wise knows that feeling well, and it will not have surprised him anymore than it did the Elland Road crowd to see Leeds steal a victory at the death.
It did, however, require a goal more fortuitous than even Thompson's seven days earlier.
A cross from the ex-Celtic midfielder was headed weakly across goal by Sebastien Carole, and goalkeeper Steve Phillips was under no pressure until the ball caught the shoulder of his centre-back Steve Elliott and deflected into the net.
Titles and promotions can be one and lost with such bounces of the ball.
The result was not exactly an injustice, but a point would have rewarded Bristol Rovers appropriately for their effective display of counter-attacking.
United had their chances and hit the crossbar in the fourth minute, but long periods of the second half belonged to their visitors.
The outcome, however, provided a perfect depiction of the clubs' seasons. Leeds are simply full of goals; Rovers' comparative impotence once again cost them dear.
Tresor Kandol was returned to Wise's line-up after serving a one-match suspension at Walsall, and United's manager reacted to the loss of the injured Jonathan Douglas by restructuring the centre of midfield.
Wise dropped Radostin Kishishev to the bench and elevated Thompson and Jonathan Howson to his starting side, a bold move which almost bore fruit in only the fourth minute when Jermaine Beckford leapt to head Thompson's inviting ball onto the top of the crossbar.
Rovers had already lost Joe Jacobson by that early stage after a collision between the left-back and David Prutton in the first minute. Jacobsen left with signs of concussion, while Prutton was also taken down the tunnel by United's medical staff.
He returned with a thick bandage wrapped around his head eight minutes later.
Beckford's first chance came as Rovers were reorganising their line-up in the wake of Jacobsen's injury, and the striker provided the only telling presence in attack for Leeds.
His searing shot on the half-hour â€" created by a beautifully disguised pass from Thompson â€" was tipped into the crowd by Phillips, and Beckford's improvisation saw him volley a low cross from Prutton a foot wide of the post during United's next attack.
But the look of sharpness in Beckford was otherwise missing in Wise's line-up.
Jacobsen's replacement Chris Carruthers had been on the field for a matter of seconds when he wasted their clearest chance after being played into space in front of Casper Ankergren by Danny Coles' sharp pass.
Ankergren limited the defender's options by running out to meet him, and the keeper threw his body behind Carruthers' shot to push the ball to safety.
Ankergren was left stationary 10 minutes later when Lewis Haldane's cross from the left saw Rickie Lambert drive a volley from eight yards into the side-netting, and Lambert then curled a free-kick over the bar.
The near-misses quickly addressed Wise's fear that Rovers would look to play for a point.
Eight minutes after the interval, a quick turn and shot from Lambert saw Ankergren push the ball past the post with one hand, and the visitors seemed blessed with fresher legs.
It took a brave save from Phillips, however, to snatch the ball at Beckford's feet after a clever flick from Jonathan Howson allowed Ian Westlake to shoot across goal.
Wise sensed the sway in momentum towards the away side and turned to his bench for inspiration, from Carole and Tore Andre Flo. United began to find their feet, but when Beckford's header from another perfect cross from Thompson glanced a wonderful chance wide in the 74th minute, the feeling a draw
was in the offing became tangible.
Thompson's creativity opened up the Rovers defence again shortly after and Kandol failed to trouble Phillips with a poorheader. But after Ankergren beat away a goalbound effort from Haldane, Wise's substitutions forced the decisive goal six minutes from time.
Thompson dipped a cross towards a tightly-packed penalty area and Flo's flick was headed into the six-yard box by Carole. Phillips came to collect the ball but was left looking to the heavens as a deflection off Elliott's shoulder steered it into the net.

Leeds lifted by Howson late show

Leeds continued their impressive promotion pursuit with young midfielder Jonny Howson's late strike sinking Bristol Rovers 1-0 at Elland Road.
The promising midfielder found the net for the first time this season in just his third start to move Leeds into third place with a deserved victory.
Rovers suffered a nightmare start when young full-back Joe Jacobson was forced off with an injury, making way for Chris Carruthers. And Jermaine Beckford could have made the Pirates' day even worse, but he failed to keep his header down from 12 yards.
Beckford again threatened on the hour mark when he fired in a shot from the edge of the box, but Rovers' goalkeeper Steve Phillips was on hand to tip the striker's effort around the post and just moments later David Prutton found Beckford with a well-directed cross but the 11-goal striker failed to hit the target.
Leeds boss Dennis Wise made a double substitution, bringing Tore Andre Flo and Seb Carole on for Prutton and Ian Westlake before Seb Carole went close twice in quick succession.
But Leeds finally got their breakthrough in the 84th minute when 19-year-old midfielder Howson got on the end of Alan Thompson's cross to score from 12 yards.
