10 Luciano Becchio
15 Adam Clayton
16 Danny Pugh
22 Tom Lees
23 Robert Snodgrass
25 Danny Webber
27 Davide Somma
28 Aidan White
29 Zac Thompson
30 Alex Cairns
31 Charlie Taylor
32 Lewis Turner
33 Paul Robinson
44 Ross McCormack

+ Nathan Turner, Dom Poleon?

Bates refused Grayson request
Chairman says former Leeds boss wanted to sign a midfielder

Ken Bates has revealed the future of Simon Grayson came to a head when the former Leeds United manager wanted to add another midfielder to the squad.

Grayson was sacked by Leeds last month following a 4-1 home defeat by Birmingham City after three years in charge at Elland Road.

Neil Redfearn has been in placed in caretaker control of first-team affairs as chairman Bates takes his time to decide upon Grayson's long-term successor.

Bates has now outlined one of the reasons behind his decision to part with Grayson following the request to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window.

"It came to a head when Simon wanted to sign a midfielder which would have cost the club nearly £1.5million over the length of his proposed contract," wrote Bates in his programme notes for Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion.

"We already have nine midfielder players, so I refused - the first time ever!

"The current first-team squad is 28 strong. Premier League clubs are only allowed to register 25.

"In the circumstances it was decided to part company with Simon and his staff immediately following the Birmingham result."

Lions snap up Lowry
Australian joins Millwall after successful loan stint

Shane Lowry: Has joined Millwall permanently following loan spell at The Den

Millwall have sealed the permanent signing of defender Shane Lowry from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.

The Australian stopper - on loan at The Den since November - has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal in London.

Lowry signed on as a Villa trainee in 2008 but made just three first-team appearances during his time in the Midlands.

The 22-year-old has spent time on loan at Plymouth, Leeds and Sheffield United in recent seasons.

As the YEP seem to be a little less 'frightened' of upsetting Bates, how about running a story on Ben Parker's pre-match appearance in the Pavillion on Saturday and glove puppet Lorimer's reaction? For those of you that haven't heard, Parker took to the stage to address the fans and give his views. He decided to speak the truth about the Howson deal (good lad) and say it how it is. He stated that Howson is devastated at being forced to leave the club. He does not want to go but has been told by BatesHarvey that Leeds United need the money. He was offered an extra £400 a week (on top of his current reported £4k a week) and he rightly refused and requested parity with the clubs top earners (Paynter, Becchio, Brown etc who are reportedly around £11k a week). Surely as club captain he deserves a deal that puts him up there and takes him off his League 1 deal? Bates & Harvey have not offered him a second, improved offer therefore forcing him out. He's gutted. New baby, new house, all his family and friends local and captaining his local team. His old man is scathing too. Good on Parker for speaking his mind. He's done it 'cos he's nearly out of contract and knows he's on his way out. He'll be shipped out on loan today to Carlisle. Lorimer then jumped in and took the microphone off Parker and was abused by the crowd. No respect left at Leeds for Lorimer which is sad to see but he really has become a lap dog to Bates. Alos Aidy White will not sign as he has been offered a rise of £500 a week to make him up to £2500 a week. Forcing him to leave so we get the compo as he's under 24. Bates out

When it comes to sensationalism few do it better than Ken Bates. In his programme notes today, he speaks of a £2m overspend on the £9.5m player budget set at the start of this season. In doing so, the Leeds United chairman thought he’d put an end to chants of “where’s all our money gone?” by throwing a huge number out there to distract Leeds United fans.

Interestingly though, Ken Bates fails to offer any point of comparison. As impressive as £11.5m sounds, it’s nothing more a number being used to distract people until you put it into context â€" in this case, the context is the rest of the Championship.

Before we get into all that, here’s the quote in full from Ken Bates’ programme notes;

January is a month of the transfer window; excitement, rumours, misinformation, double-dealing and shadow boxing. All the fun of the fair. Meanwhile, the club’s management have to cope with all this while still running the club.

In Leeds’ case, we have bought Danny Pugh, obtained the loan of Andros Townsend, extended Maik Taylor’s contract and are in negotiations with a few players that are already at the club.

“Where’s the money gone?” is the latest chant from the vociferous few. Well, I’ll tell them! Simon Grayson’s player budget was £9.5m for the year. As I write, we have so far committed £11.722m, over budget by nearly 23 per cent.

For anyone that doesn’t understand what he means by “player budget”, this is the collective total of all transfer money spent (and allegedly received) alongside the players wages for the year.

Unlike most clubs, Leeds United’s transfer kitty is included in the wage budget.

With £9.5m to spend, Simon Grayson can theoretically afford to pay 25 players (an average Championship squad) £7,300 each, which sounds reasonable enough for a Championship player.

The problem is, that unless Simon Grayson gets all his players for free, he can’t actually afford to offer them that amount because every time he spends money it comes off the total budget. Spend £2-3m buying the quality additions Leeds United fans are demanding and you’re left with very little to pay them.

What’s interesting is how this relates to our turnover. Plans are afoot to cap wage spending to 70% of turnover. Since our last published accounts were 2009-10 the £27m turnover I’m going to use is based on League One football. It’s safe to say our turnover has increased significantly since then.

Nevertheless, even when we use the League One figure against Ken Bates early season budget this only accounts for 35.2% of our turnover. Even with the “overspend”, we’re still a long way short at 43.4%.

I strongly suspect turnover for last season was closer to the £35m mark which would reduce that percentage even further. You also have to take into consideration that The FA’s guidelines do not take transfer fees into account, which is what Ken Bates has done here. That means other clubs could spend 70% of their turnover on wages and still pay for new players with other funds.

How This Compares To Other Clubs

As the last published accounts are 2009/10, I’m going to use a table published a while back by The Swiss Ramble â€" A renowned football blogger and financial expert who compiled the following using public accounts;

As you can see, Leeds United’s reported spending on wages is much higher than what Ken Bates is now telling us. This isn’t because he’s “cooked the books” or is lying to us now, it’s simply because Leeds United’s published figures are incredibly vague. The £14m above includes everybody â€" Ken Bates, Shaun Harvey, Simon Grayson, the coaching staff, the tea ladies etc…

Knowing what we know now, and assuming our budget has risen somewhat since League One, I’d suggest Millwall (also League One figures) is closer to the actual spending on the first team that year â€" perhaps a million or so more in Leeds’ case.

Unlike Leeds, most other clubs separate their figures out to offer further transparency. Leeds are not the exception to the rule, but their accounts are amongst the vaguest I’ve ever encountered.

Setting aside that figure entirely and using the figure Ken Bates gave us today, in 2009/10 only six clubs would have spent less than Leeds United on wages.

In itself, that is a shocking statistic, but when you consider that other clubs have separate wage and transfer budgets, it gets even worse.

All of a sudden, the £11.5m Ken mentions starts to sound less impressive. Simon Grayson has basically been left to lead a promotion charge with the budget for a relegation battle.

So we’ll ask you again Ken â€" “Where’s all our money gone?”

Either Leeds United recently employed a Leprechaun to administer huge doses of luck when all hope seems lost or I’m at a total loss to explain today’s events.

For the first hour or so, Leeds United were second best. Behind thanks to an Andy Lonergan blunder and incapable of stringing half a dozen passes together, there was no creativity, no inspirational leading figure and absolutely no chance we were going to take anything from this game. In short, there was no belief â€" not from the players and certainly not from the fans.

It was painful to watch. As news spread that Robert Snodgrass has ended contract talks with the club, citing a lack of ambition and broken promises as his reasoning, the cries of the dissidents were understandable. What we were witnessing was the death of a football club.

The seven year long asset-stripping, under-financed reign of Ken Bates had clearly taken it’s toll. The fans had lost faith and the players had too. As easy as it is to point to Simon Grayson’s tactics and failure to motivate when your team is struggling, there is little anyone can do in this situation. All the tactical wizardry in the world won’t change the fact our players have lost all faith in the club itself.

Ken Bates had his say of course, pointing to a £2m overspend on the club’s £9m “transfer budget”. The only problem with Ken Bates’ definition of a transfer budget is that it’s actually our wage budget, but we’ll cover that wonderfully crafted piece of misdirection in a separate post.

Anyway, as one man’s yawn contagiously spread around The Kop, the epically proportioned bit of luck Leeds United required started with Alex McCarthy who was sent off for handling outside the box. This seemed an incredibly basic error for such a hugely talented goalkeeper to make, leaving some fans to question which side he was playing for â€" had he taken pity on us?

That was followed by Ipswich Town’s centre-back passing the ball to Robert Snodgrass who must have felt embarrassed by the charitable equaliser he was allowed to slot home. 1-1.

Soon after that, Ross McCormack put Leeds ahead as Ipswich Town’s replacement goalkeeper got caught in two minds making it far too easy for Leeds’ top goalscorer to add a second. Paul Jewell’s defence had crumbled and his team were masters of their own downfall. 2-1

That just left Luciano Becchio to round things off and bring an end to the most bizarre twenty five minutes of football you’re ever likely to see. Even Paul Rachubka’s meltdown paled by comparison as this had spread throughout Ipswich’s entire team almost instantaneously.

In summing up this match, words fail me. The only way I can describe it is that this could be the only time in the history of professional football where a team has won 3-1 and their highest player rating was 4/10 â€" and even then I think I may have been generous.

Finally, the comedy on display almost overshadowed the dissident protests. Large numbers of fans gathered before the match to call for an end to Ken Bates’ reign and there was no real let up inside Elland Road either. The chants were a common theme, banners found their way in and stewards ejected some fans as tensions rose.

Despite the result this was a dark, but nonetheless necessary day for Leeds United. Seven years since Ken Bates “saved us” (from administration I presume…? oh wait…) our homegrown club captain has been sold and Robert Snodgrass is looking set to follow. At the start of this season our optimism was based on the midfield trio of Max Gradel, Jonny Howson and Robert Snodgrass.

Two down, one to go…

Robert Snodgrass ends contract negotiations with Leeds

Duncan Castles
Jan 22, 2012

Robert Snodgrass has terminated negotiations with Leeds United over extending a contract due to expire in 18 months time. The club's key creative force as they pursue promotion to the Premier League, Snodgrass has been disappointed by terms that failed to offer him parity with Leeds' best-paid players.

The 24-year-old also feels he has been let down on promises that the club would strengthen its playing squad to aid the attempt to reach the Premier League. Last week, Leeds agreed the sale of club captain Jonny Howson to Norwich City for £750,000 plus variables. Snodgrass, meanwhile, was overlooked for the captaincy in favour of goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, a summer signing.

While Everton have cooled their interest after signing Darron Gibson, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich have asked to be kept informed about the playmaker's availability. Snodgrass had scored eight times in 21 Championship appearances ahead of yesterday's match with Ipswich, having accelerated his return from emergency appendix surgery.

United have overspent on budget, reveals Bates

Published on Saturday 21 January 2012 13:24

KEN BATES has today hit back at critics claiming Leeds United have failed to back manager Simon Grayson by revealing an overspend by the club of almost a quarter on the planned player budget this season, writes Richard Sutcliffe.

The imminent £2m sale of captain Jonny Howson to Norwich City has left supporters unhappy with about 150 staging an impromptu protest on Thursday night against how the club is run.

Further protests are planned today for the visit of Ipswich Town but Bates, in his programme notes, has hit back at the club’s critics.

He wrote: “‘Where’s all the money gone?’ is the latest chant from the vociferous few. Well, I’ll tell them. Simon Grayson’s player budget was £9.5m for the year. As I write, we have so far committed £11.722m, over budget by nearly 23 per cent.

“It is bad business practice but a demonstration of how far we have backed the manager and continue to do so.

“Incidentally, income from season tickets and matchday ticket sales just about equals those figures. Consequently, all the other costs of running the club have to be earned from other sources.”

Bates also revealed that a tribunal to decide on the fate of Andy O’Brien has been set for February 27.

United manager Grayson claimed the defender refused to play for the club against Burnley on November 19.

"total income doesn`t match sallery of squad today, have to see elsewhere for investment in the club"...

Leeds United star attracts top league interest.

By  George Zielinski
Saturday 24 September 2011

According to skysports.com, Leeds United midfield Adam Clayton is being tracked by a succession of Premier League clubs following his outstanding start to the season.

Although it has so far been a far from vintage season for the Whites, with fan protests against the running of the club coupled with poor on field showings, Clayton has shone personally, already netting two league goals and putting in a number of man of the match performances.

United fans would be loathed to lose a player of Clayton’s undoubted quality, particularly following the recent departures of fan favourites Max Gradel and Bradley Johnson to St Etienne and Norwich respectively.

However, with the likes of Everton, Bolton and Stoke all credited with having an interest in the 22 year old, it could only be a matter of time before Clayton joins the ever expanding list of young talent departing Elland Road.

June 21, 2011, 22:38:44
Skysports.com understands Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and Sheffield United could agree a swap deal involving Billy Paynter and Nick Montgomery.

Paynter came in for criticism from fans last season and has been linked with a move away from Elland Road since the end of the campaign.

But Leeds boss Simon Grayson said earlier in the summer that the forward, who scored just one goal in 23 appearances in 2010/11, remained a part of his plans.

Leeds, though, are in the process of reshaping their squad in a bid to challenge for promotion from the Championship.

Midfielder Montgomery could therefore provide a different dimension to Grayson's plans and may welcome the chance to return to the second division.

Sheffield United were relegated from the Championship last season and the 29-year-old, who signed a new three-year contract last summer, might be looking elsewhere.
