Høyreback Freddie Lane, i kveld venstreving 😅

Leeds Under-21s just needed a scrap

The departures of Pascal Struijk and Joffy Gelhardt this summer marked the end of an era at Elland Road. While Dan James remains as the last player at Leeds to have appeared under Marcelo Bielsa, Struijk and Gelhardt's exits drew a line under the academy investment that took place under Bielsa's watch.

Struijk arrived at Leeds from Ajax six months prior to Bielsa's appointment but first had to prove himself in an Under-23s project that eventually bore fruit. Gelhardt, meanwhile, spearheaded a recruitment drive that also featured Crysencio Summerville, Sam Greenwood and Cody Drameh. Mateo Joseph is technically still a Leeds player and was technically signed a month before Bielsa was sacked, but I'm gonna reserve my right as a petty blogger to blame Jesse Marsch for both of those things.

It has worked out better for some than others. Gelhardt and Leif Davis remain in the Premier League, Summerville is adding a few zeroes to his bank balance in Saudi Arabia and Drameh finally got the European move his agent always promised him by joining Genoa this summer. But the relative success stories are far outweighed by the number of players who never quite made it, underlining the fragility of — as a documentary once phrased it — Academy Dreams. Sean McGurk is playing for South Shields, Stuart McKinstry is turning out in Scotland's third tier at Hamilton, Morten Spencer and Amari Miller have both retired due to health issues. Not everyone finds the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

In more recent years, the excitement has been lost around the rebranded Under-21s. Archie Gray was an outlier, while his little brother Harry is the headline name in a change of policy as the most promising youngsters get sent out on loan into the real world. First-team players no longer have to prove their fitness by helping out the kids for a game or two, depriving me of the incentive to tune in to LUTV and find out what Jean-Matteo Bahoya is really like.

With the grown-ups either fighting for promotion or battling against relegation, the stakes have been too high for Daniel Farke to take a risk on a prospect. He backed Mateo Joseph at the start of 2024/25 but ultimately couldn't wait for Joseph to learn how to control a football when Leeds needed 100 points to win the title.

It says a lot about how my interest in the U21s has waned that, even though they won the inaugural National League Cup in 2025, I still don't really know what the competition is or how it works. But on Tuesday night I finally sat up and took notice as Leeds' kids went to play the adults of Solihull Moors, including former Brentford midfielder Ryan Woods, who once looked like one of the tidiest players in the Championship, which goes to show senior football is no less precarious than academy football.

It wasn't the quality of winger Freddie Lane's two finishes in Leeds' 3-2 win that caught my eye, nor the shimmying hips of attacker Josh McDonald, who I've been hoping will make it ever since seeing him play in the U18s run to the Youth Cup final two years ago. Leeds were battered 5-1 by Boreham Wood in their opening game in the competition a couple of weeks ago, but this time stood up to the bigger boys in Birmingham. Quite literally, in fact, as with fifteen minutes to go, Alfie Cresswell was scythed down in a cynical tackle as he broke from midfield, jumping to his feet to spark an all-in melee between both teams.

Having only appeared off the bench a few minutes earlier, Jonny Howson tried his best to act as the responsible adult and break things up but couldn't stop Jayden Lienou flying in from left-back, 'keeper Rory Mahady sprinting from his goal to the other end of the pitch and getting stuck in or new striker Carrick Njinko ragging players to the turf and aiming what is constituted a 'punch' in football — it was more a little push in the face — that decked Solihull's Rio Shipston.

Njinko was sent off alongside Solihull's Cameron Green, who didn't even make the initial tackle and seemed to just get manhandled by Njinko a couple of times. Presumably the ref felt he had to send off someone from the hosts for simply trying to pick on some kids only to get shown up.

Maybe the occasional scrap in the National League Cup really is the future of youth development, the next step for half the team that were part of that U18s side that went all the way to the Youth Cup final. As their then-manager Rob Etherington put it after beating Liverpool at Elland Road in the quarter-final: "I just said to them in the changing room, they deserve everything they're going to get. When I look around I can see blood all over their legs and their socks, limping about. Leaving everything out on the pitch is what it is to be a Leeds United player." Or in the words of Rhys Chadwick, one of the goalscorers against Liverpool back in 2024 and in the middle of the scrap against Solihull: "Leeds is based on being a bit rough and tough and getting dirty for the team." Perhaps the future's bright after all. ⬢
