Howson is living the dream with Leeds United

GOOD enough has always been old enough in football, but burgeoning players can never dictate the speed at which they are asked to grow up. Jonathan Howson was preparing for a quiet Christmas last year when Dennis Wise gambled on his maturity and introduced the midfielder to the Football League. Leeds United we beginning to smell of relegation and, just seven months after his 18th birthday, Howson was the unexpected inclusion in Wise's starting line-up for a Championship fixture with Hull City at Elland Road on December 23.

Hull ground out a goalless draw and set United's trajectory into rapid decline but, with patient endeavour and a typically modest attitude, Howson's stock continued to rise as much around him at Elland Road threatened to cave in.

He finished the season with 11 senior appearances to his name, and scored his first professional goal at Norwich City on February 3. At the end of a costly year for Leeds, Howson's was small story of success, and one that both he and Wise stand to profit from. United's boss is now in a position to entrust his young prospect with a frontline role against Premiership opposition tonight.

A performance of commendable maturity saw Howson control Leeds' Carling Cup first-round victory over Macclesfield Town two weeks ago, and Wise's desire to rest players may see him turn to the 19-year-old at Portsmouth during round two of the competition this evening. United's squad is worryingly shallow, and the final days of the transfer window have yet to bring any respite. Without his youngsters, Wise would scarcely have a squad to speak of, and Howson has not been alone in quickening his development at a convenient time. Yet is the unassuming and cultured midfielder who seems most likely to impact on United's season after coming safely through a deeply uncertain summer.

"The aim for me this season is to play as many games as I can, said Howson. I'm still a youngster and I'm still learning, and I've got to remember that.It was nice to break through last season, and I seem to be involved in the gaffer's plans at the moment. But I've got to keep it going and keep looking to the future. There are quite a few young lads coming through just now, but this season is more about the team as a whole than it is about us. We're only a very small part of what's happening at the club. The most important thing is getting the team back to where it should be, and this is a very big season for the club."

"If we get promoted I'll be delighted, whether I'm involved every week or not. If I don't play too many games then I'll look to next season, and I don't want to get ahead of myself. No way. The next game is the same as my last â€" a chance to push on."

The sound of Howson committing himself to Elland Road will be gratifying for Wise, and for United's academy staff at Thorp Arch. Leeds sustained damage on various fronts during their time in administration, and the academy was not immune from punishment.

Danny Rose â€" a winger who United fought so hard to retain last year â€" resigned from their scholarship scheme and moved to Tottenham, and England Under-16 international Ben Gordon negotiated a transfer to Chelsea, a club who have readily exploited United's youth-team investment and weak financial position. Danny Ward also requested permission to leave Elland Road, and is believed to have linked up with Bolton Wanderers. Leeds were entitled to compensation for all three players, but the financial incentive was a consolation rather than a reason for the sales.

United did not want to lose their younger assets and will throw a defensive arm around Howson if his performances started attracting uninvited interest.

Howson said: "I don't want to go anywhere, and I haven't even thought about that. I want to stay with Leeds. I've lived here all my life and I want to do something with the club, something that I'll be proud of. I want to push on individually this season, and hopefully we'll do the same as a team because I think we're good enough to win something. Getting relegated last season was very disappointing as a player, but even more so as a fan. I've watched Leeds for many years and to see that happening was hard. It wasn't easy for anyone here, but I tried not to think too much about what was happening. I wanted to play well for the club and give what I could, and I did my best to stay focus on my training and my performances. I didn't want to let things get to me, and that's when you rely on more experienced players to help you out."

"But you can see on the pitch how together we are now, and the huddles at the end of games are an example of that. Everyone can see that there are no divisions here at all. I think the fans like that. It shows to them that we're together and that we want to do well â€" that we're here for the right reasons."

Howson's comfort on the ball was striking against Macclesfield, a game which witnessed by far his most convincing display at first-team level. Portsmouth will present a more problematic challenge tonight, regardless of the extent to which Harry Redknapp weakens his side, but Wise is unlikely to worry about Howson's ability to cope with a hostile environment at Fratton Park. United's boss took an important decision last season when he temporarily ended Howson's involvement in the first team after a 3-2 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road in March.

Howson, for the first time, had succumbed to the pace of the game, and the midfielder appreciated Wise's intervention. Throughout his reign at Elland Road, Wise has refused to allow United's problems to damage the confidence and enthusiasm of his younger players.

"I've got plenty of people keeping my feet on the ground, and the gaffer especially," said Howson. That was the case last season â€" they didn't want to play me too much and kill me as a young lad. The gaffer knows about that, he knows when to play me and when to leave me out. I don't mind that at all â€" I think he knows a bit more about the game than I do!"

Joda, selvfølgelig..."Howson says all the rigth things"...det ser vi jo alle!

Howson has what it takes to play for England - Grayson
6:30am Saturday 13th March 2010

Jonny Howson, Leeds United’s home-grown midfielder, has been watched by England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce, who is monitoring his progress.

The Leeds Academy product wasn’t at his best on the day Pearce decided to run the rule over him, but that doesn’t mean his chance has gone.

Howson, who hasn’t missed a league game this season, is approaching his 150th appearance for the club, and Leeds manager Simon Grayson says: “I am sure Jonny has the potential to play for his country.

"Stuart Pearce has been to watch him in one game and it probably wasn’t the best result or performance Jonny has played in, but Stuart has asked me about him and I have given him an honest opinion of what he is all about.

“Hopefully good things will follow for him because he has had a very consistent season and you can be sure he will always work hard to fulfil his ambitions. If he is playing well for his club, he will be recognised at other levels.”

Grayson added: “Jonny is a young, talented player who has played a lot of games for us. He will learn from the experience of this year and emerge even stronger because not everything in the garden has been rosy.

"It is how you respond to disappointing defeats and performances that makes you a better person and a better team.”

God nok for England?
