Fergie: Beastly Smith gave us fight

Sir Alex Ferguson was in raptures after seeing his Manchester United players dismantle Roma.

The United boss said: "I would say that it has to be one of our best performances. Itwas an incredible night for us.

"I hope we will play some very good football between now and the end of the season but I’m not sure that we’ll get that many goals again."

Ferguson singled out Alan Smith, who made his first start in Europe for 15 months. "Everybody is very pleased for Alan," he said. "His enthusiasm shone throughout the game.

"I don’t really want to talk about individual players but I will make an exception for Alan.

"The great quality he has had over the past year has been patience and he has shown great perseverance to keep going. He’s deserved it more than anyone. He’s trained like a beast and now he has got his reward.
