Palace sign Derry

By Phil Hay
Shaun Derry's move from Leeds United to Crystal Palace has been finalised.
The London club asked last week to convert Derry's loan at Selhurst Park into a permanent transfer last week and United and Palace held fresh talks yesterday and his exit was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

Initial discussions were held between Dennis Wise and Neil Warnock last Wednesday, and the clubs have now agreed a fee for the 30-year-old.

Derry was under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2009, and United were initially believed to value him at around £300,000.

Palace have been reluctant to pay over the odds for the former Portsmouth and Sheffield United player, but Derry made a major impact during his recent loan spell at Selhurst Park.

Warnock wanted Derry's signature before the club's next game at Leicester City a week today.

Derry joined Palace in November on a two-month deal which culminated in a 2-0 victory over Bristol City on Saturday. He made a total of 12 appearances in matches which yielded an astonishing total of 30 points.
Palace were in the Championship's relegation zone when he moved to the capital, but his loan concluded last weekend with Warnock's squad in fifth position.

Derry has not made a competitive outing for Leeds since their FA Cup third round defeat at West Bromwich Albion in January of last year, and his departure has been expected ever since he was allowed to head south.

The midfielder had just recovered from 10 months on the sidelines with a heel injury when he moved to London on November 19, and a failed attempt by Wise to recall him from his loan before United's game against Oldham Athletic on New Year's Day appeared to spell the end of Derry's career at Leeds.

Wise argued that Derry had rejected his request to return to Elland Road amid a chronic shortage of midfielders. But the loan agreement with Palace did not contain a recall clause, and Warnock later insisted that he had blocked the bid from United to take Derry back to Yorkshire.
A permanent deal with Palace has removed one of the higher earners from the wage bill at Elland Road, and may also offer fresh funds to Wise during the final week of the transfer window.

United's manager has committed most of his January budget to signing Neil Kilkenny, Peter Sweeney and Bradley Johnson for around £500,000, but he is still keen to add a centre-back and a striker to his squad.

Leeds, meanwhile, were hoping to give a handful of their fringe players a run-out during this afternoon's reserve clash with Rotherham United, but the match has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Millmoor.

The game was originally re-arranged for February 13, but the clubs have now confirmed that their reserve sides will meet on April 29.

£300.000 up front then?

("Derry was under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2009, and United were initially believed to value him at around £300,000.)

"He was nearly going for nothing at one stage, but we've ended up getting money for him and we've cleared his wages."

Synd at klubbene rakk å sluttføre denne handelen.
