Ex-White targets Club World Cup glory
Ex-Leeds United defender Danny Hay will more than likely miss out on locking horns with old foes Manchester United in this year's Club World Cup - and will have to settle for a spicy trans-Tasman encounter as a substitute.
Hay, captain of New Zealand part-timers Waitakere United, will lesd his men into battle against Adelaide United in the opening game of the competition tomorrow.
Sir Alex Ferguson's United jet into Japan next week, having been given a route straight through to the semi-final.
It would take a near miracle for Waitakere's collection of teachers, builders and salesmen to overcome Adelaide and Japan's Gamba Osaka in the quarter-finals to set up a dream date with United.
He said: "I played against Manchester United with Leeds. It was every young lad's dream.
"Those were the days of Roy Keane and David Beckham at his best. It was special."
"But the Adelaide game is a big one for us. It most definitely does give us extra motivation - New Zealand and Australia have always got a massive rivalry.
"We're like the little brothers. They're the big brother - you always want to get one over on the big brother, don't you?
"In every sport in New Zealand we always want to beat the Aussies. They're our major rivals first and foremost."

Harrogate strike deal for former Whites star Noel

Harrogate Town have pulled off a major coup by snapping up former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan until the end of the season.
Whelan, who was twice involved in £2m moves â€" to Coventry and Middlesbrough â€" has been without a club since leaving Scottish First Division side Dunfermline last season.
The 33-year-old Leeds-born player has been taking his coaching badges while overcoming an Achilles injury.
He signed for Harrogate yesterday â€" after his international clearance came through â€" along with former Huddersfield Town academy player Luke Malcher.
Chairman Bill Fotherby said: "I'm highly-delighted Noel has joined the club. When he gets back to full match fitness he will be a real force to be reckoned with.
"He has a presence and a skill and you can't lose that. He will be a real asset for us.
"And at 33, he still has a lot to offer football.
"He will be practising his coaching skills here, but hopefully he will also do a lot more playing than watching."
Both Whelan and Malcher, 21, will be in the Town squad for tomorrow's trip to Durham City in the first round of the FA Trophy.
They took part in training last night on Leeds United's third generation artificial pitch at Thorpe Arch ahead of the game at UniBond League First Division North outfit Durham which will be played on a similar surface.
Meanwhile, Town's Blue Square North rivals Farsley Celtic have nothing to fear at Conference leaders Burton Albion tomorrow â€" according to boss Neil Parsley.
Parsley said with Burton expected to win the FA Trophy first round tie, the pressure is off.
"It's a tough game, but it's a good one," said Parsley. "We are going to the best non-league team in the country at the minute and we can go there and play without fear.
"We are playing without expectations, except those I put on the players, and it is a fantastic game for the lads to go and express themselves and show just how good they are.
"We have nothing to lose because nobody expects us to win.
"The players can express themselves, just as they did at Altrincham in the Setanta Shield and last time out against Droylsden. We beat them 2-0 and we all know what they have done of late."
Dominic Krief's one-match suspension carries over into a third week for Celtic. Tom Penford, back from a hamstring injury, steps in.

Pennant can walk out on Liverpool for free
Jermaine Pennant could walk away from Liverpool as a FREE AGENT at the end of the season.
The Mirror says under the terms of the contract Pennant signed when he arrived at Anfield from Birmingham two years ago, he will become a free agent at the end of the season unless he makes 15 first-team appearances.
If Pennant reaches that number, Liverpool have the option of extending his contract by a further year.
But so far the 25-year-old has played in only four games and has been told by Rafa Benitez that he is surplus to requirements. Blackburn and Stoke are keen.

Burns keen on Mansfield job
Nottingham Forest legend Kenny Burns has thrown his hat in the ring for the vacant managerial post at Blue Square Premier outfit Mansfield Town.
The 55-year-old former Scottish international submitted an application on Tuesday and the Stags are expected to start the interview process some time this week.
Burns told the Mansfield Chad: "I have a wealth of experience I would like to pass on.

HARTE WANTING TO EXTEND
Ian Harte is determined to extend his stay at Blackpool beyond his one-month contract, insisting he has "more passion" now.

Harte, 31, said: "Hopefully it will be longer than a month.
"I've probably got more passion now than I did when I was playing because when I was at Leeds it was a five-year contract or whatever.
"I need to fight to try and get a contract and I need to go out now and prove it on the pitch."

Speed may have played last match

Gary Speed has played 18 games for Sheffield United this season

Gary Speed may have played his final game after Sheffield United revealed he needs a back operation that could keep him out for the rest of the season.
The former Wales captain, 39, won the old First Division title with Leeds in 1992 and scored in every Premier League season until he dropped a division.
United boss Kevin Blackwell said the midfielder could take up a management for coaching role with another club.
Blackwell added: "I am getting used to being without him as a player."
Speed, who has won 86 caps for his country, started his career with Leeds in 1988 and moved to Everton for £3.5m in 1996.
Two years later he joined Newcastle for £5.5m and he then signed for Bolton in the summer of 2004.
Four seasons followed at the Reebok before he joined Sheffield United in last season's January transfer window.
