"Far too much water has passed under the bridge since then".

OK, takk for info.

COME ON LEEDS !!

15,000 demand Leeds are crowned European champions

AC Milan's 1-0 win over Leeds United in the 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup final should be reversed if new evidence is found to suggest the match was fixed, according to a European Member of Parliament.

Richard Corbett, who represents the Yorkshire & Humber constituency at Brussels, has collected 15,000 signatures for a petition to be handed in to European soccer's governing body Uefa on 16 May, the 36th anniversary of the match.

Corbett is asking Uefa to investigate the final, and if new evidence is found that it was fixed it should be awarded to Leeds.

"Following Uefa's recent crackdown on betting syndicates and match fixing, Uefa can now show the whole of Europe that even if a match happened many years ago, cheating and corruption will not be tolerated," he told Reuters in a telephone interview on Wednesday.

"The integrity of football must be preserved. Uefa subsequently banned the referee because of suspicions surrounding his handling of the match but Uefa say they cannot reverse the result because of their 10-year statute of limitations.

"That means that if you cover up a crime for long enough you can get away with it and I think Uefa should reverse that policy."

Milan beat Leeds with a controversial goal from Luciano Chiarugi, who scored direct from an indirect free kick after four minutes of the game played in Salonika, Greece.

Greek referee Christos Michas was subsequently investigated by his own football association on suspicion he had been bribed by Milan.

He was then banned by Uefa from refereeing international club matches again.

Soon after the final Leeds asked Uefa for a replay which was refused.

Along with the suspect goal, Michas is claimed to have ignored a series of apparently obvious fouls against Leeds players. The local fans shouted “shame” at the referee and were so incensed that Milan’s attempts at a lap of honour were halted by a barrage of missiles.

Rudi G.

Dear Friend,

On Saturday, I formally sent off my petition to UEFA, which you kindly signed, calling on them to investigate the 1973 European Cup Winners’ Cup final between Leeds United and A.C. Milan and, should any evidence be discovered that shows the match was fixed, reverse the result and award the trophy to Leeds.

No fewer than 12,200 people eventually signed it by the time it closed at midnight on May 15th â€" an astonishing number. The following morning â€" the anniversary of the match - the petition was packaged up and formally sent to the General Secretary of UEFA, David Taylor, in Nyon, Switzerland.

Two weeks ago, I met with a UEFA official who promised that they would at least look at their archives to see what they said about the match at the time. I want them to take a more in depth look at the game and launch the full investigation we are demanding. If I am re-elected on 4 June, I will be visiting UEFA’s offices later in June to press the case.

The number of people who signed the petition shows the continued sense of injustice about the match and the strength of feeling helped to give the petition a life of its own. Newspapers across Europe, and particularly in Italy, covered the story, while Leeds’ own Peter Lorimer, who of course played in the game, gave his support in his Yorkshire Evening Post column (which you can read here). There has also been some interest in making a TV documentary about the case.

A lot of people have contacted me about the match, plenty of them asking me if I knew if there was a TV or film copy of the whole game. So far, searches for the whole match have proved fruitless. There is a minute of highlights on Youtube but very little else. If anyone does have a copy of the whole game, please get in contact with my office or the club.

I will continue to keep you up to date with the petition by email and let’s hope for a positive outcome!

Best wishes,

Richard Corbett,
