Brian Deane feels United should place their trust in youth, insisting Leeds are now well-poised to move forward under chairman Ken Bates and manager Simon Grayson.

"It's too big a club to be languishing in League One but I suppose you are there because you deserve to be there," said Leeds-born Deane. "That's the other side of the coin.

"It's something that everybody has to understand, that nobody has a right to be promoted just because you have a fantastic support base.

"It does hurt. The problem arrived when they started overstretching themselves.

"They were spending big money bringing in players and assembling a massive squad â€" probably a bigger squad than they needed really.

"They were spending money on players' wages like money was going out of fashion at the time.

"It's unfortunate what actually happened down there and what's happening now is the likes of Ken Bates are trying to pick up the pieces and move the club forward.

"To be honest, I don't really have that much knowledge of what goes on there now but what people don't realise is that Ken Bates has come in here and he has put his money where his mouth is and nobody has got a bottomless pit.
