Scunthorpe United’s Hooper favourite to replace Newcastle bound Beckford
By TSSPublished: January 8, 2010
Posted in: LUFC, Posts

The favourite is Gary Hooper at 2/1, although the odds on Aaron McLean have fallen sharply to 4/1 after rumours involving him emerged earlier. Both are proven goalscorers at this level with a decent goals per game ratio so seem to fit the bill. The full odds are as follows;

Hooper, G 2/1
McLean, A 4/1
Sharp, B 5/1

Barnard, L 10/1
Austin C 12/1
Jackson, S 12/1
Pericard, V 14/1
Garner, J 14/1
Bent, M 14/1

Boyd K 20/1
Healy, D 20/1
Vokes, S 20/1
Brodie, R 20/1
Harewood, M 20/1

Eastwood, F 25/1
Camara, H 25/1
Stead, J 25/1
Lambert, R 33/1
Le Fondre, A 33/1
Holt, G 33/1
Hughes, L 50/1

More on Jermaine Beckford’s possible replacements
By TSSPublished: January 9, 2010

All the attention today will be on Elland Road to see whether or not Jermaine Beckford makes an appearence, but with his transfer clearly inevitable, I thought we should look deeper at the stats of his possible successors.

After one user criticised my earlier post claiming that the Beckford to Newcastle deal was done, I feel I should first clarify my position on this. I still believe the deal is done, but it’s simply a case of crossing the i’s and dotting the t’s. Jermaine Beckford clearly made that statement saying he was going to Newcastle, or else the club would have dismissed it by now. It’d be stupid of them not to as any other potential suitors would go elsewhere if they believed (as it appears) the deal is already as good as done. I guess today will reveal a lot, but a company like Goal.com aren’t going to make quotes they can’t back up or court-case happy, Ken Bates led Leeds United would be sending the lawyers round.

Anyway, back to the point at hand. I’ve compiled a table of stats for the four strikers the bookies are favouring to replace Beckford. The appearences and goals are league games only and for the club they are currently signed to.

    Apps Goals GPG
Jermaine Beckford Leeds United  105 63 0.6
Gary Hooper Scunthorpe United 62 31 0.5
Aaron McLean Peterborough United 115 55 0.48
Lee Barnard Southend United 73 35 0.48
Billy Sharp Sheffield United 53 8 0.15

It’s worth noting that Billy Sharp’s record away from Sheffield is a lot better. His average goals per game ratio at Scunthorpe United for example was 0.64, which is better than that of Beckford’s at Leeds. Similarly, whilst he’s been on loan at Doncaster Rovers he’s managed a record of 0.625 goals per game. It just seems that at Sheffield United, he’s never really been able to perform as he can.

Looking at the stats with that in mind, it’s quite obvious why these are the players the bookies are favouring. Leeds United need to replace Beckford with someone capable of one in two. They’re more likely to invest in someone of a relatively young age, which is why 21-year-old Hooper was 2/1 favourite the last time I checked. Leeds United will also need a player capable of peforming in the Championship, and since Hooper is already at that level with struggling Scunthorpe, he ticks all the right boxes. You don’t have to be a professional scout to be able to see the list of criteria required by Leeds, but the one thing no one has really considered is cash.

We’re all assuming Beckford will go for somewhere in the region of £2m. I aren’t convinced Scunthorpe would part with their star-player for such a price, especially since his departure would almost certainly seal their fate as one of the relegated teams from this years Championship. Whilst Hooper is my preferred choice of replacement, the big questions are whether we can get him for the same (or less) than we get for Beckford, and will Bates be willing to add further funds if not?

A quote from Hooper yesterday, in response to the speculation has been interpreted differently by many fans, but for me, it signals his willingness to join Leeds;

“I want to stay at Scunny, but it will be in the back of everyone’s head that I will be going there.

“But I am staying at Scunny and playing at Derby tomorrow hopefully.

“I would be keen (to stay) but if a big club comes in, you never know.”

Given we’re the only team I’m aware of being linked with Hooper, the big club must be us. Maybe it’s years of supporting Leeds that’s made me cynical, but when a player refuses to catergorically rule out a move away from a club, it tends to mean he’s leaving, which is exactly what he’s done here. The door is wide open and this is a screaming invitation for Simon Grayson to collect.

Billy Sharp meanwhile is a definite option. Out of favour at Sheffield United, so undoubtedly available on the cheap. He’s also young and as I pointed out above, he has got a 0.6+ ratio away from Sheffield. He’d tick all the right boxes not only in terms of playing criteria, but also in terms of cost, which would undoubtedly make him Bates’ favourite and give him an edge over the others.

Billy Sharp and Gary Hooper then clearly leading the way, but Aaron McLean and Lee Barnard are good outside shots. That said, this is Simon Grayson whose transfer dealings have never been done publically. Very little was heard about Max Gradel before he signed on the dotted line, so an unexpected striker like the earlier linked Steve Davies from Derby shouldn’t be ruled out. Should make for an interesting few weeks anyway!

ooh aah

"  An early one from the tabloids on Tuesday and most newspapers are reporting that Joe Cole's contract talks with Chelsea have stalled. Cole's current deal expires at the end of the season and reports claim he wants £130,000 a week to stay, while Chelsea will not go above £100,000. "

Leeds ponder ambitious bid for Villa striker HarewoodLeeds United have joined the race for Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood.

The People says Harewood is on Leeds boss Simon Grayson's shortlist to replace want-away striker Jermaine Beckford.

Harewood is available from Villa on-loan this month and is also wanted by Hull City and Newcastle United.

Leeds United look to capture Harewood in loan dealJanuary 13, 2010 | Transfer news | 3 Comments |
Marlon Harewood Leeds United manager Simon Grayson is reported to be keen on signing Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood until the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror, Grayson wants to boost his attack and Leeds' promotion chances, should they lose star striker Jermaine Beckford .

Harewood has just returned to Aston Villa following a loan spell at Newcastle United , who are interested in signing Leeds striker Beckford himself.  Ironically, should Beckford move to St James Park, Harewood could be his replacement.

30 year-old Harewood does not appear to be in Villa manager Martin O'Neill's plans and has managed only 6 goals at Villa Park since moving there in 2007.  Nonetheless, he showed that he has retained an eye for goal during his spell at Newcastle, netting 5 times in 15 appearances.

Elland Road boss Grayson hopes that Harewood's experience would help secure promotion to the Championship for Leeds United .  However, a potential six month deal could be dependent on Villa agreeing to fund half of Harewood’s £30,000-a-week wages.

Becks watch day 12: Mick McCarthy hits the nail on the head
By TSSPublished: January 12, 2010
â–º RetweetSome words of wisdom from Mick McCarthy after being asked about the Beckford rumours;

“Us and how many others have been linked with Beckford? Do you think his agent might be working overtime?”

Indeed we do Mick! Infact, many of us believe that his agent has been whispering in Jermaine’s ear for quite some time in a bid to engineer a move away from Leeds. After all, he’s got to make some money out of his number one client while he can. Not many people fall on their feet quite as well as this particular chancer and manage to blag there way through life on a wing and prayer.

So, day 12 in the Beckford Watch saga.

Wolves â€" As above, McCarthy hasn’t really confirmed his interest but does admit he’s looking for more options upfront. Any move here however sounds like it could leave Beckford warming the bench with McCarthy saying that he would suffer if any of his two main strikers were injured, which suggests Beckford would get a bit part at best.

Newcastle United â€" It’s almost like Chris Hughton is trying to play brag with Ken Bates and if there’s once person you don’t want to play such games with, it’s our Kenneth. Basically, the story is currently along the lines of, Leeds keep knocking bids back and are alledgedly wanting £2m, Hughton insists Newcastle aren’t the sort of club to pay over the odds for unproven players (ha), Leeds stand firm, Newcastle try to bluff by claiming they’ll go elsewhere and not wait around forever, Leeds ignore them and sit patiently waiting for bid number four…

Hull City â€" The fishing town of Hull have pretty much been ruled out after reports suggest they won’t be joining the race. Quite happy about that one, would hate to think we’d become a feeder club for this bunch of bandwagoners.

Sunderland â€" Seems to have been a non-starter as there’s nothing really linking him to them today. Wouldn’t surprise me if this was a rumour made up just to annoy the Toon fans, but much like every other team that’s been half-linked, you never know. Grayson and Bates like to do business quietly, which means someone could end up signing him with no one having a clue until the last second.
