I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

9th April 2014.

To the Leeds United players,

Do you know that the lack of effort and desire you are showing is disrespectful to the thousands of supporters who watch you play?  Thousands of us spend a considerable amount of time and money travelling around the country to watch you get paid thousands of pounds to play football.  It is simply unacceptable.

Imagine spending HALF of your salary going to watch a group of players who don’t care about anyone apart from themselves.  You complain when some of your salary is delayed and use it as an excuse for your pathetic performances.  You earn more in two weeks than most of the fans earn in a year.  The fans spend thousands of hard earned pounds following Leeds United.  We are also allowed to complain when we have to put up with such a lack of passion from the players we are paying to watch.

This is Leeds United Football Club.  This is not any old football club. We live, breath, eat, sleep, think Leeds United all day and all night.  It is our life.  We don’t want players who are here for money.  We want players at Leeds United who play with passion.  Play with pride.  With desire.  Hunger.  Play for the fans and not for your win bonus.  Come off the field covered in bruises.  Players who drop to their knees at the final whistle because you can’t give any more.

We don’t expect silky skills.  We don’t want fancy flicks.  We want effort.  We want determination.  We want closing down the ball.  We want harrowing the opposition.  We want players dripping in sweat.  We want players willing to get hurt for Leeds United.  We want players who run and run and run until they can’t breathe.  We want players who care as much about the result as the fans.  We want players who hurt badly when we lose.  We want players who share the joy of winning and scoring with the fans, not their wives.  We want players who go down and get back up again.

The total lack of caring has gone on too long.  Your manager has been at Leeds United for a year.  The fans HAVE BEEN Leeds United for almost a hundred years.  We are this football club.  No one else.  And so now listen to us.

Your recent performances have been absolutely disgusting.  You’re not even trying.  You go through the motions.  You turn up simply to collect your undeserved pay cheques.  If any of us performed like you in our jobs we’d have been out of a job months ago.  You don’t know how lucky you are.  To be paid to play football.  To be playing for Leeds United.  A club known around the world.  You’re wearing the same shirts as David Batty, Gary Speed, Gary Kelly, Gordon Strachan, Vinnie Jones, Jonny Giles, Billy Bremner, Paul Madeley, Norman Hunter, Jackie Charlton, Peter Lorimer, Eddie Gray, John Charles.  You play in front of the dug out where Howard Wilkinson and Don Revie once stood.

Show some respect for this club.  Show some respect for the fans.  We have five games left this season.   Seven and a half hours of football.  Less than one working day for the tens of thousands of fans.  We bust our guts in warehouses, offices, factories, builders yards around the country to earn the money to come and watch you play football.  We are ashamed.  We are almost embarrassed.  We are a laughing stock.  Because of you.  We are badly let down.  You have let us all down.  And it is not acceptable.

We DEMAND seven and a half hours of passion from you.  You owe us all that.  You will give us five games of determination, hunger, desire, commitment, dedication, sweat & blood.  You will put a collective smile back on all of our faces.  Then you will really see what we are all about.  This club will return to its former glory and these next five games will kick start it.

If you’re not interested, walk away now, because we don’t want to watch you play any more.  We’d prefer to see the youth team squad pulling on the famous white shirt.  They deserve it more than you.

If you’re not walking away, you’ve now got five games to prove your worth, starting with Blackpool on Saturday.

NOW STEP OVER THAT WHITE LINE AND SHOW US THAT YOU CARE

Tror nok kapteinsbindet bytter stol neste sesong.
