LUFC Fans view v Palace
Tiny T gives us his usual biased views on the Leeds players performance against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Schmeichel 8
No chance with the goal, stunning save from a free kick and a couple of others he stopped, thought his kicking was not at its best today.

Hughes 3
Out of position for the goal and looked out of his depth defending, got forward at times. He is the weakest link, Goodbye.
Ed- As usual the blinkers can`t come off regarding Hughes.

Bruce 8
Solid at the heart of the defence, helped covering both fullbacks and enhanced his standing for a long run in the side.

O'Brien 8 Star man
Dependable at the heart of the defence. Wholehearted display, broke through several times to put Leeds on the front foot. Splash the cash for a permanent move in January.

McCartney 6
Struggled at times but stuck to his task.

Snodgrass 8
Tackled back to help out Hughes, had the Palace fullback in his pocket at times, he needs to improve his distribution, gave the ball away too easily at times. A hardworking display.

Kilkenny 8
His best display in a Leeds shirt. A couple of Battyesque sliding tackles, unusual for him. Couple of decent attempts at goal as well.

Howson 8
Pushed forward well in the first half, had a goal ruled out for offside but the only one in the ground that thought it was, was the Linesman. He finished the game at right back. Good all-round performance.

Johnson 5
At fault for the first goal and not at his best today, deservedly subbed.

Gradel 6
Saw the best and worst of Mad Max today, another who was rightly subbed.

Becchio 7
Little service to work off in the first half, two in two minutes in the second half saw Leeds take the points. Needs someone to play upfront with him and it showed today when Grayson sent on the Cavalry. Hurry up and sort his contract out.

Substitutes

Sam 7
More incisive than Gradel and better delivery.

McCormack 7
Caused trouble upfront and worked for the three points when in the middle of the park at the end.

Paynter 7
Assisted in turning the game around when we played three upfront towards the end. Lively.

Summary

Grayson threw on the cavalry and it worked, Palace looked rocky when we played three upfront. Right subs at the right time.

The Centre of the defence looks better with each game and we have a strong core through the middle.

Its time for us to give Becchio a strike partner, but which one is the problem. Both Paynter and McCormack look creditable partners and there is also Somma, tough decisions ahead for Grayson.

The crowd today always seemed to sense we would win and drove the team on, best supporters in the land.

Booing, especially one of our own cannot be condoned, its Johnson decision not to accept a new contract. Its no different to anyone of us changing his/her job really and he did have a below average performance today, but he stills wears the White shirt and we should still appreciate his efforts.

Thanks for your views Tiny

The Dielhenn Debrief, Leeds United 2 v 1 Crystal Palace

Saturday 04 December 2010, Championship.

Seven games unbeaten, our hoodoo at Elland Road is gone, and the only direction Simon Grayson must be looking is towards the top of the table.

Kasper Schmeichel was as good as he always is â€" he was tested infrequently but responded when he was needed, although he could do nothing about Palace’s goal.  In front of him, centre-backs Andy O’Brien and Alex Bruce will have been disappointed not to have kept a second consecutive clean sheet.  They were decent, and even provided a threat from set-pieces in the other penalty area.  The pair have justifiably made themselves our new double-act in the centre of defence.  On the left, George McCartney gave a good attacking display and showed why Grayson has extended his loan for another month.  Right-back Andrew Hughes was solid and untroubled in the main, but it would be surprising to see him get the nod over Paul Connolly when the latter returns from suspension.

Neil Kilkenny and Bradley Johnson were more involved in attack than defence and both had long-range shots that threatened Palace.  Such was Leeds’ dominance that Grayson switched to 4-4-2 and replaced Johnson with Lloyd Sam, who had an effective appearance on the wing.  Jonny Howson wasn’t as spectacular as recent games, although he looks a player reborn as an attacking midfielder.  With the license to create things, knowing that losing the ball high up the field isn’t the end of the world, Howson is flourishing.

Max Gradel should have had a goal in a slightly below-par display.  After being suspended for the start of the season Gradel has confirmed himself in our starting 11 now but will be wary after playing below his best.  Robert Snodgrass, who has been inconsistent this term, was arguably our best player against Palace.  In an open game, it was a few moments of class from Snodgrass that stood out and made the difference for us.  Luciano Becchio, another player who can sometimes frustrate with his lack of involvement, again proved why Grayson has such trust in him.  Two instinctive strikers’ finishes won us the match, which is all you can ask for from him.

Grayson must take credit for the victory too.  He started out playing 4-2-3-1, which is the formation that he prefers at the moment.  Realising we were on top, he switched to 4-4-2 after 55 minutes and the added attacking impetus worked for us.  Billy Paynter and Ross McCormack once again influenced the game as substitutes.

We have another guest from the opposition giving us his thoughts on the performance of the Leeds United players. This time it`s Palace fan Ell Hutchins who was hoping for a positive result for Palace as he lives in Leeds and his misses and family are all huge Leeds fans.

Goalkeeper - Schmeichel 8
His save from Ambrose`s free kick at the end of the first half was brilliant and he kept us out really well, I thought.
I don`t think he had a massive amount to do but what he did do, he did nothing wrong. I know from the past he has been prone to a few silly mistakes but it was a solid performance from him and I think he will just get better and better.

Defence

Bruce - 7
McCartney - 6
O`Brien - 6
Hughes - 6

I thought your defensive unit as a whole was pretty strong but as most teams in the division, couldn`t cope with the runs of Zaha. I know the defence is your weakest spot and we didn`t exploit it as we should have done. Bruce lived up to his reputation and from what I could see was trying to rough our players up a bit. McCartney was solid as was O`Brien. Andy Hughes was pretty absent from most of the game but didn`t really much wrong.

Midfield
Kilkenny - 7
Howson - 9
Johnson - 5
Gradel - 8

I thought Bradley Johnson was struggling to be fair and so did most of the people around me. I`ve seen him before and when he joined from Northampton he was a wonderful talent but hasn`t quite come to fruition yet. Neil Kilkenny provided some great build up play I thought they were all completely over shadowed by Jonny Howson. I`ve seen Howson play several times before but I thought he was absolutely stunning. His playmaking ability is fantastic and he has the ability to create chances either for himself or for the strikers from absolutely nothing. I`ve heard he might be on his way to Villa but if you manage to keep hold of him, he will be very important to your promotion bid.
Max Gradel caused us no end of problems in the first half but then petered out a bit. I thought he played wonderfully.

Forward - Becchio 7

Becchio didn`t do a great deal, I thought throughout the game. Tested Speroni once or twice but was definitely in the right place at the right time for both of the goals. I`ve heard his contract is up in the summer and now he`s beginning to show some form. If he`s thinking about a dream move to the premiership then if I was him, I`d be worried. He should definitely sign a new contract with Leeds.

Summary
I was expecting a tough gritty game but actually got quite a fluid open game which at times both teams were outplayed by the other.

I thought that we were getting absolutely battered in the first 10-15 minutes of the game and I really thought it was going to be another 5-0 but thankfully it wasn`t that bad. I think after that, we got better and better throughout the first half and you guys were lucky not to go in 2-0 down (but then the same could be said for us really). After half time, I think we carried on where we left off but, as has happened so many time this season, we became complacent, Leeds went up a gear and we lost it. I think it`s something like 15 points we`ve lost in the last 10 minutes of games this season now. By full time it looked like Men v Boys.

I think overall, a 2-2 draw would have been a fair result as I don`t think either team was overall better than the other, which says something about our false position in the league, as you boys didn`t play badly at all.

I think Leeds will definitely be there in at least the playoffs come the end of the season as you have that 'last minute win` attitude.

Having a crowd behind you like you have at Elland Road is a massive bonus.

Good luck for the rest of the season except for when you come to Selhurst in April.
