I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

Reading Villa?

Gary Gardner: Why I chose Coventry City ahead of Leeds United

GARY Gardner could have been boosting Leeds United’s play-off push against Barnsley on Saturday – but it only took a brief chat with Lee Carsley to convince him to bolster Coventry City’s relegation battle at Brighton.

As exclusively revealed in yesterday’s Telegraph, the 19-year-old Aston Villa midfielder has joined the Sky Blues on a one-month deal.

And Carsley, City’s Under-18s coach, played a key role in that decision.

“The Villa manager told me that he’d like me to go out on loan for a month and straight away I thought of Coventry because it is close to home and a great place,” confirmed Gardner, the younger brother of Sunderland’s £6million summer recruit Craig.

“A few top-of-the-table clubs were after me but Lee Carsley is a close family friend.

"My brother phoned him a few days ago and asked what it was like here and he said ‘they’re a good bunch of lads who try to play football and the gaffer is top quality as well’.

“I trust Lee – he has looked after my brother and me for years, giving us boots and things – so when he told me Coventry are a great club my mind was made up and I thought ‘I’d love to go there’.”

Pitched straight into a full training session after completing the loan formalities yesterday morning, Gardner confirmed: “The lads and staff have made me feel welcome and the banter is great which is what you want in football.

“I know Jordan Clarke, Nathan Cameron and Conor Thomas from England and a lot of the other youngsters came up to me to shake my hand and welcome me.

"I also know Gary McSheffrey, who played with Craig at Blues, and he has taken me under his wing.”

Her er resten, vet ikke hvor relevant det er..

Sitat
Gardner’s impressive progress was interrupted by ruptured cruciate ligaments which sidelined him for 12 months but he stressed: “I’ve been back for a year and I feel I am back to my old self, getting stuck in and scoring goals.

"I’m a box-to-box player and I want to be the complete midfielder.

“I can’t get in the Villa team at the minute because there are quality players ahead of me but I have come here to test myself and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch and show them what I’ve got.

“I’m a Coventry player for now and I just want to give the club, the fans, the gaffer and players everything I have got.

"Every time I step out on to the pitch I give 110 per cent and I’m sure the fans will respect my efforts.”

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is fully aware of Gardner’s potential and tried to sign him up for Inter Milan last summer.

“It’s good to know that big teams want you,” said the modest youngster, “but at the time I was coming back from a big knee injury and you can’t let things like that faze you.

“Villa have done a wonderful job with my rehab, looked after me really well to get my knee strong and as fit as I can, and I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for Aston Villa and my family.

"I’ve been on the bench a few times and played a lot for the reserves but I want first-team football and Coventry have given me that chance.

“The gaffer wants us to play from the back, play football and I’m happy with that – England play a midfield diamond and I think it’s a good system.

“Coventry are in the relegation zone but they were unlucky against West Ham and got a draw against Cardiff in a game they could have won.

"Hopefully I can get a few goals and help them get some points which is all that matters.

“Brighton is a long trip for my first game but it wouldn’t have mattered if it was the other side of the world – I just want to play football and I’m raring to go.”

Gardner is aware of the Sky Blue Army’s traditional attitude towards Villa but as a Solihull lad he revealed: “Half of our family are Blues and half are Villa and we have banter about that but I just follow football and I had nearly every kit going when I was young.

“I had a lot of friends at Blues when Craig was there but I support whoever I am playing for.

“The fans take it differently but I’ve come here to become a better player and I’m sure that would go down well with Villa’s fans and Coventry’s.”

THE NITTY GRITTY
Name: Gary Gardner
Position: Central Midfielder (attacking)
Club: Aston Villa
Currently playing for: Coventry City, on loan until January 2012
Date of birth: 29/06/1992 (19 at time of writing)
Place of birth: Solihull, England

NEED TO KNOW

Achievements so far: A graduate of Aston Villa's youth academy and younger brother to Sunderland defender Craig, Gary Gardner is regarded as a future England star. Gardner captained Villa's youth team during the early part of the 2009/10 campaign and scored 14 goals before a horrible anterior cruciate ligament injury ended his season prematurely. After taking nearly a year out, Gardner continued his progression when he returned to action in January 2011 and made the move up to the England U21 squad, where he has netted two goals in three European Championship qualifying games. So far this season Gardner has scored two goals and has an assist in five games for the Aston Villa reserves, but has now joined Championship side Coventry City on a one month emergency loan. His stock has risen dramatically in the last year and he is now Villa's most exciting prospect, as he sets his sights on pushing his way in to Alex McLeish's first-team.

International honours: After playing for every preceding England age group, Gardner is now part of Stuart Pearce's U21 side with four caps and two goals to his name so far.

FIVE FACTS
1) After returning from injury only weeks before, Gardner was influential in Aston Villa's 10-1 demolition of Arsenal in a reserve league game in January 2011. During the match he scored twice and created another two goals.

2) The Gardner brothers have high-hopes of playing for England together. Gary says: "If we could play together that would be a dream come true and the family would be very proud. Especially for England in the senior international team. I have played with Craig for Villa in the reserves and we'll see what happens in the future. England is our dream and if it happens it would be wonderful, but if not hopefully we can still play for a club team together one day."

3) Gardner scored a hat-trick as Aston Villa beat Ajax to book their place in the quarter-finals of the NextGen Series, a tournament designed to give youth players an experience similar to the Champions League.

4) He scored on his debut for Coventry against Brighton last weekend. The Sky Blues went on to lose the game 2-1 and are currently sitting in the relegation zone.

5) His contract at Aston Villa was extended in December 2010, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2014.

WHAT'S BEEN SAID

He says: "The manager spoke to me and said the best thing would be to go out [on loan] for a month. I want to go there, score goals and win games and help Coventry and then play for Villa."

They say: “Gary is a player that everybody told me about when I came here and how he could burst into the first team almost straight away, but people forget he was out with a cruciate ligament injury for about a year. He is now starting to show the potential he has got. We are now seeing that in his performances and also getting a chance for his country at under-21 level. He is also chipping in with goals which is fantastic for his confidence.” Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish
