Byram hoping to avoid operation following return
Leeds United defender Sam Byram says he is hoping to get a run of games in the first team after returning to the starting line-up against Watford at the weekend and he is hoping he will not need an operation on the troublesome hip injury that sidelined him for five months.
Saturday was Byram`s first start since suffering a thigh injury in the game at Huddersfield Town towards the end of October and the youngster, who has made just eight appearances this season because of injury, is hoping to get his match fitness back with a run of games in the first team.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, Byram said, "Injury wise I am absolutely fine. I have no pain and no problems for the past five weeks. I have been doing extra training and working in the gym to make me stronger.
"To get match fit you need to play matches. I can train hard but nothing compares to being match fit and I think it will take a few games to get back to last season`s fitness.
"Hopefully I can now get a run of games and be back to my normal self.
"I had the injection about six weeks ago to try to avoid an operation and get rid of swelling around my hip joint and I am feeling really good. Touchwood, I will avoid needing an operation."
The 20-year-old enjoyed a meteoric rise in the Leeds first team last season after coming through the clubs academy system. After enjoying a successful pre-season, Byram was thrown in on the first day of the season in the League Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town following an injury to Tom Lees.
Byram never looked back, making 53 consecutive appearances for Leeds before suffering a hip injury during the warm up for the penultimate game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road.
His form over the season saw him scoop all the main awards at the clubs player of the year night and he showed his ability and versatility by also picking up the clubs goal of the year for 2012 for his strike in the win over Oxford United in the League Cup, his first goal for the club.
Byram returned to the starting eleven last Saturday following an injury to Tom Lees and it is still unclear whether Lees will be fit for the trip to Doncaster Rovers this weekend.
