LEEDS LINE UP EX-NEWCASTLE MIDFIELDER AS MONK EYES NEW TARGET – REPORT
By Will Butcher
Leeds have turned their attention to Lyon star Olivier Kemen as they look to add defensive stability to their midfield, according to a report.
The former Newcastle midfielder has emerged as a target as as a move to re-sign Sunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt continues to drag on.
The Yorkshire Evening Post claim that Kemen is on manager Garry Monk’s radar after he slipped down the pecking order at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais despite making his first team debut last season.
Liam Bridcutt’s transfer saga continues to stagnate, even though Radio Yorkshire presenter Joe Rawson claimed that the deal was close to completion.
The former Swansea manager is desperate to bring in midfield depth this summer, with just Luke Murphy, Toumani Diagouraga and Matt Grimes equipped to fill in as holding midfielders in what is expected to be a 4-2-3-1 system.
The France Under-20 international was thrown in at the deep end by Lyon back in February, making his debut against French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Kemen played for Newcastle’s youth academy for two years between 2013 and 2015, and can operate as a marshall between the defence and midfield, or as box-to-box midfielder himself.
Kemen, who was born in Cameroon but has so far opted to represent France at youth level, made just one more appearance in Lyon’s 4-1 loss to Stade de Reims after moving to France for around £500,000 last summer.
The former Metz trainee could continue to be used as a squad player by Lyon manager Bruno Genesio, as he still has three years remaining on his current contract.
