With Profit & Sustainability issues being a key factor Bielsa is realistic about the transfer policy and that the days of buying several players worth £10m plus are no longer so the loan market will be a key part of the club’s recruitment strategy. Club prepared to back him.

Thorp Arch will undergo further improvements including recommissioning the swimming pool, installing a 1km running track, remote controlled filming of training & upgrading the dressing rooms to mirror Elland Road. #lufc

From Spygate to Aston Villa's walk-in goal - Marcelo Bielsa's incredible year with Leeds United chronicled

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa has committed to another season at the club - but do you remember just how crazy his first season was? Strap yourselves in...

Let's take a look back at a busy twelve months:

June 15, 2018: Leeds made Bielsa the Sky Bet Championship's highest-paid manager when appointing him as Paul Heckingbottom's replacement. The Argentinian shook hands on a three-year agreement, with the club having the option to extend his stay at the end of each year.

September 18, 2018: Bielsa's side set the early season pace in the Championship. An eight-game unbeaten run, including wins over Stoke, Derby, Norwich and Preston swept them to the top of the table, three points clear of second-placed Brentford.

December 23, 2018: Kemar Roofe's last-gasp winner at Aston Villa ensured Leeds were top at Christmas and three days later the striker scored twice more in stoppage time to sink Blackburn. Despite a home defeat to Hull three days after that, they ended the year in pole position ahead of Norwich.

January 11, 2019: Leeds moved five points clear at the top, but their home win against Derby was overshadowed by the 'spygate' saga. Leeds officially apologised, but Bielsa later admitted he had sent someone to spy on every team he had played.

February 18, 2019: The English Football League fined Leeds £200,000 and gave them a severe reprimand after completing their investigation into spying. The club avoided a points deduction, while Bielsa revealed in May that had he paid the fine out of his own pocket.

April 19, 2019: Leeds' automatic promotion hopes were dealt a huge blow as they lost 2-1 at home to 10-man Wigan and three days later slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Brentford. A three-point cushion over Sheffield United in the race for a top-two finish was turned into a three-point deficit with two games to go.

April 28, 2019: Bielsa ordered his players to let Aston Villa score an uncontested goal as their final home game of the regular season ended in bizarre fashion. Villa's players had stopped, expecting the ball to be kicked out of play as Jonathan Kodjia lay injured, but Mateusz Klich took advantage to score and after all hell let loose at Elland Road, Bielsa instructed his side to let the visitors walk in an equaliser.

May 15, 2019: Leeds blew their second chance to win promotion. Having won the first leg of their play-off semi-final at Derby 1-0, they squandered a 1-0 lead in the return at Elland Road to lose 4-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate and face a 16th season outside the Premier League.

What Marcelo Bielsa's in-tray will look like when the Leeds United boss returns for pre-season - Leeds Live

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United contract extension is the first, and most important, order of summer business for Andrea Radrizzani et al.

The head coach was a revelation in his first full campaign at the helm, driving a mid-table squad, with a handful of additions, to third in the Championship and 45 minutes from a Wembley play-off final.

Despite breaking the record for the wrong reason, Bielsa did have United at the league summit on Christmas Day, which traditionally yields promotion.

For an endless list of reasons, Bielsa’s signature was vital for the club, its fans, players and staff, none bigger than morale after that play-off defeat to Derby County.

Bielsa will head home to Argentina now and try to recharge his depleted batteries before returning for another pop and pre-season.

What, though, will be the key issues in his, Radrizzani's, Angus Kinnear’s and Victor Orta’s in-trays upon his return?

Contracts

The most urgent piece of business at the club has to be Kemar Roofe’s contract. Sorting your current squad before acquiring new talent has to be the priority and the striker tops that list.

After completing the campaign as the club’s top scorer, Roofe is now entering the final 12 months of his deal with this and January’s transfer windows between United and a free sale.

Gaetano Berardi, Stuart Dallas and Bailey Peacock-Farrell are the other main names heading into their final years, while the club can trigger a one-year extension on Mateusz Klich’s contract.

Those who were away on loan last season seem unlikely to get extensions and Pablo Hernandez will be 35 before the end of next season, when his deal expires.

Transfers

Collaborating with Orta, Bielsa will have a keen eye on what his current squad needs now he has had a full year in the Championship.

Leeds United's summer international call-ups in full - and where you can watch them in action

Bielsa ran with a small squad last season and it would be surprising to see him deviate away from that same approach in 2019/20.

Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker’s loan deals ended earlier in the campaign for different reasons, while Jack Harrison and Izzy Brown saw out the full campaign.

Bielsa and Orta have already been pictured at Leeds’s Sky Bar with paperwork, no doubt chewing over who they want during the difficult transfer market Radrizzani has predicted.

Getting deals, or loans, sorted as early as possible is always a priority for bosses looking to integrate well in advance of the new season.

Loans though, with Premier League managers keen to have a good, long look at their young talent, may not be possible until late July or early August.

Outgoings too, will be necessary, and something of a priority if the club is to streamline their wage bill and delete unnecessary wages from their balance sheet.

Orta, evidently, struggled with moving several senior names into permanent new homes. That will be a challenge again.

Look at the list of players sent away last season and the majority will be made available this summer.

Ex-Leeds United defender outlines why Marcelo Bielsa is staying - but issues big transfer warning

Filtering the under-23s

One of the success stories of last season was the strain several of the club’s youngsters withstood when put into the firing line of first-team football.

One of Bielsa’s big jobs this summer will be sorting the wheat from the chaff to establish who is next off the production line and ready for first-team integration from the off.

Jamie Shackleton is virtually established as a senior squad player, while Jack Clarke ended up making more league appearances than his fellow teen, despite coming into the squad later.

Tom Lawrence (R) is challenged by Jamie Shackleton during the Championship play-off semi final second leg match between Leeds United and Derby County at Elland Road on May 15, 2019(Image: Alex Livesey/Getty Images)
Ryan Edmondson, Robbie Gotts, Aapo Halme and Leif Davis are others who seem like they may be next on the line, but if Bielsa and Orta are to zero in on external targets they must establish who will and will not be ready to plug gaps from the youth ranks.

Infrastructure

The training ground improvements have already been widely reported off the back of Bielsa’s agreement to remain in West Yorkshire.

This is why Leeds United tweeted 'Vamos Leeds Carajo' ahead of Marcelo Bielsa's contract announcement

The swimming pool will be recommissioned, the 1km running track will be laid and the video analysis at Thorp Arch will evolve again.

Aside from that, there are the new floodlights at Elland Road which received planning permission last week, plus the consideration for any other improvements the club may want to see.

Had the club been promoted, ground would have been broken the very next day on a long list of developments off the field at Elland Road, but as a Championship club nothing drastic is needed, though improvements may be wanted nonetheless.

These are matters sat requiring the attention of the club’s top brass across the coming weeks.

Keeping Marcelo Bielsa comfortably better than Premier League promotion for Leeds United fans

Rick BroadbentMay 28 2019, 5:00pm,

There is an erroneous belief, peddled by us in the media and a generation of fans that have never been urinated on at a football match, that the Premier League is everything. Cushioned seats, one-touch football, hooded knitwear, a high press, twice-yearly drubbings by the former laughing stock of English football and the right to be tutted at by Martin Keown. But this is not football Valhalla; it’s not even Villa Park. So the news that Marcelo Bielsa has signed on for a second season comfortably beats promotion for Leeds United fans. Heaven can wait, as can losing at Watford.

Massimo Cellino, the former owner of Leeds, did not get many things right, but I have a fond memory of him pounding a table in…

Sky Sports lift lid on Bielsa negotiations

an image
Leeds United spent 30 hours of “intense” talks discussing the club’s future with manager Marcelo Bielsa as they looked to trigger his extension clause for another season, according to Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton.

The Whites revealed on Tuesday that the Argentine, who managed to lead Leeds to a play-off semi final after an exciting promotion push, would be at Elland Road next season after extending his stay.

Speaking of the discussions which took place prior to the announcement, Tim Thornton revealed that there were three days of crunch discussions, revealing what was talked about between the parties.

The broadcast reporter said on Sky Sports News (28/05, 17:40): “Intense talks took place last week with Bielsa, 30 hours of talks within three days. Not once though did they talk about his salary.

“It was all about the planning for next season, transfer strategy, upgrades to the training facilities as well.”

Opinion

It seemed unlikely that Bielsa would be on his way after an enjoyable but ultimately unsuccessful year at Leeds – he has plenty more to offer and will no doubt want to go one step further than this season. It seems as though his reason for staying is solely footballing based and that is exactly what the fans want to hear. Yes, his wage might play a factor but it proves his intentions at Elland Road are to improve to club and return them to the heights that they have been away from for so long. It is fascinating to get an insight into what goes on behind closed doors and you know that Bielsa, Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta will have been working on laying a foundation for the club’s summer plans and beyond. The Whites are in good hands under Bielsa and there is unfinished business to address when the Championship kicks off again after the summer break.

Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United - brought together by the familiarity of unfinished business

Neither Leeds United nor Marcelo Bielsa are used to the familiarity of second seasons.
Leeds go through managerial changes every summer and club football rarely pins Bielsa down for long. Both of them know what unfinished business feels like.

There is plenty of it at Elland Road and too much for Leeds or Bielsa to let it go.

Bielsa works his employers in negotiations, meticulous about the details of what he wants and what he needs, but talks about an extension to his contract were on course from the start.

Bielsa wanted another year, Leeds wanted him to commit to it and they were shaking hands by the close of play on Monday night. Bielsa stays and for the first time in almost a decade, Leeds have tangible continuity.
Change has been so constant in their long EFL existence that Bielsa becomes only the third United coach since relegation in 2004 to start two consecutive seasons and the club hope he will extend the trend of foreign managers mastering the Championship by winning promotion with the help of time to bed in: Slavisa Jokanovic, David Wagner and most recently, Daniel Farke.
The ground laid by Bielsa in finishing third at the first attempt could hardly be firmer. He was too effective, too particular, too popular and too driven for Leeds to think about a different way next season.

There were no contingencies at Elland Road in the event that Bielsa walked out, or no active thoughts about who could replace him, and Leeds drew talks to a successful close within two weeks of their defeat in the play-off semi-finals.

His decision leaves a clear and certain summer ahead, with only the pressure to deliver on Bielsa’s requirements.
His demands for transfers in his first window as head coach were modest and restrained and his attitude in the weeks ahead will be similar: no insistence on expensive or improbable signings but an expectation that Leeds will strengthen his squad where he needs, particularly on the flanks, and attack the loan market with far more success than they did 12 months ago.
Bielsa said after losing to Derby County in the play-offs that it was “very difficult to see these players play at the same level in another season” but he has since told the club that the point of that comment was to say that he could not have demanded any more of them.
He will attack the Championship for a second time with much the same spine and much the same mindset, conscious only that his squad’s understanding of his methods and tactics might allow him to drop the intensity of his training sessions slightly.

Training is the crux of Bielsa’s management, his way of pushing footballers to the edge, and discussions about an extension of his contract, an extension Leeds confirmed yesterday, included requests from him for more changes to Thorp Arch.

Andrea Radrizzani sends message to Leeds United's support following Marcelo Bielsa announcement

United have agreed to recommission the swimming pool (essentially out of action since Massimo Cellino mothballed it in 2014) and install a 1km running track around the facility’s perimeter.
They will install a remote control camera system to allow quicker, almost instantaneous, analysis of video footage while training is in progress and redesign the complex’s dressing rooms to mimic those at Elland Road.
It is evident from the recent Championship table, showing Leeds with their second-highest points tally ever in that league, that the club need marginal gains to bridge the gap from the play-offs to promotion.
Without Bielsa, and without a way of continuing his brand of coaching and football, Leeds could see that the work needed to better this season would be difficult and vast with new management, new thinking and a clean sweep through their backroom.

Bielsa refused to even discuss his position while the season was on-going but he and chief executive Angus Kinnear met 24 hours after it ‘ended in tears’ and began the process of activating the option to extend his tenure.
Sources in Argentina told the YEP at an early stage that Bielsa had already set his mind on staying.
Second seasons have never been easy for him and his last job at Lille did not see him through one but there is value to Bielsa in a year’s experience in the Championship, a league which has to be seen at close range for anyone to properly understand it.
Bielsa was exposed to its pitfalls, its limitations, its idiosyncrasies and the occasional self-importance of English football trying to tell outsiders how the game works. The Championship has failed to see him off.
On the contrary, he is coming for it again.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa in €19m legal action – ‘Player trading’ has a role

Sport Witness Team12th June 2019
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is a man of principle.

When he believes he’s done something wrong he’ll face up to it and deal with the consequences.

But if he believes he’s been wronged, then there’ll be no leniency when it comes to dealing with those who have gone against him and his team of staff.

Bielsa doesn’t like people going back on their word, and that’s why he walked out of Lazio so quickly, realising that promises made were there to be broken.

At Lille, the Argentine manager didn’t feel he had enough backing to implement the changes he wanted at the club. In December 2017, the French club terminated Bielsa’s contract and since then there’s been a legal dispute.

Wednesday’s edition of L’Equipe reports the Leeds United manager is seeking €19m from Lille. That’s made up of the rest of the contract he had left and further payments for damages.

He’s also claiming €4m for his assistants.

The fun part is that Bielsa plans to show up in court himself next year, with the Leeds United manager wanting to give his side of the story personally.

Benjamin Cabagno, who is representing the manager, is quoted as saying: “The public announcement in February 2017 of Marcelo’s arrival helped the club to obtain the necessary contributions to finance a business project based on the principle of “player trading” in the goal of a quick return on investment. It will be interesting to evaluate the period of integration and influence (of Bielsa) on the players who will be transferred for very high sums.”

The argument seems to be that the manager fulfilled his duties and Lille’s sales this summer will evidence that.

Svakere resultater i La liga.

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United regime the toughest I've faced, says Pablo Hernandez

Joe Urquhart

 Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez.
Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez.
Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez believes that Marcelo Bielsa's pre-season regimes are the hardest he has faced throughout his career.

The 34-year-old returned to training this week alongside the rest of the Whites squad as United's preparations began for their 2019/20 assault on the Championship.

The Spaniard, though, revealed that the double and triple sessions the Argentine's senior players are facing at Thorp Arch are some of the toughest he has seen during his distinguished career, which has spanned both La Liga and the Premier League.

"I think for me this is the fifteenth or sixteenth season of professional football," Hernandez revealed.

"I think that last year and this year is one of the hardest.

"It's good. It's not easy for the players but we know this. We know we need to work hard now to arrive in better condition to August and for the first game."

The veteran playmaker also added his belief that the work put in over the summer months can be vital, stating: "It's very important.

"My experiences told me that some teams don't work too much in pre-season. They think for the first game 'don't be 100 per cent' and they prefer to arrive in this condition.

"I think that it is important in this league to start good and arrive at 100 per cent for the first game.

"If you can win the first games and you can see the table after four or five rounds in the league and you're near the top, it's a good motivation."

There are some serious similarities in what Bielsa is building here compared to Wilko. Rebuilding a youth setup that will benefit us for years (yes we will still sell a few!). Only needs his 89/90 moment now.

So good to see the main man back in action, if you don’t back what he’s doing there’s the door

Exclusive: Bielsa at loggerheads with Leeds chiefs

EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is at loggerheads with club chiefs over the forthcoming pre-season trip to Australia, Football Insider understands.

The Argentine is unhappy with the timing of the long-haul trip and the effect it will have on his players just a few weeks before the start of the Championship season.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Bielsa has made his feelings clear to the club hierarchy and would much prefer for his players to remain at their Thorp Arch headquarters and train as normal as part of their pre-season preparations.

The 63-year-old signed a contract extension at the end of May in the knowledge that Leeds are due to fly to Australia in the next few days.

They are scheduled to play two pre-season friendlies next week against bitter rivals Manchester United and Western Sydney Wanderers, as well as undergo promotional work.

The playing side of the tour includes a fixture against Manchester United on July 17 in Perth before Leeds take on Australian A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers three days later.

The source explained that Bielsa is very unimpressed that his squad will be forced to make such a long-haul trip and play the two games just 15 days before they kick-off their Championship campaign against Bristol City.

The manager, who is a stickler for preparation that reaches his exacting standards, is worried about the effects on key players ahead of a season in which his side will start as one of the favourites to secure promotion.

Leeds regard the presence of Bielsa and the senior players in Australia as critical to the commercial success of the tour, and have made that clear behind the scenes.

Tell me - I've got to know
Tell me - Tell me before I go
Does that flame still burn, does that fire still glow
Or has it died out and melted like the snow
Tell me  Tell me
