New Leeds United signings' specific Jesse Marsch task revealed ahead of Australia tour
Leeds United’s 4-0 victory over Blackpool in their opening pre-season friendly was watched on by several of the club’s new signings

By Joe Donnohue Saturday, 9th July 2022, 3:45 pm

Leeds United have, on paper, recruited rather successfully in the early portion of this summer’s transfer window.

The Whites have secured the addition of six players, five of whom will be expected to play leading roles in the United first-team this coming season.

Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra all followed one of head coach Jesse Marsch’s fellow Americans through the door at Elland Road.

Having agreed a deal in principle some months ago, 21-year-old USMNT international Brenden Aaronson became the club’s first summer signing, pledging his future to Leeds with a five-year deal.

The reason Aaronson’s deal was concluded in the summer rather than back in January when Leeds set out on a very public pursuit of the midfielder, was previous club FC Red Bull Salzburg’s involvement in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Ultimately, Salzburg did not make it past Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 but qualification from the group stage alone represented huge progress for the Austrian club.

Once Leeds’ Premier League safety was secured in May, contracts were exchanged and Aaronson became United’s player, bringing with him a raft of European experience despite his young years.

Aaronson’s teammate Rasmus Kristensen was next to pass through the arrivals lounge at Leeds-Bradford Airport, preferring a switch to the Premier League over a more conventional route via the Bundesliga.

Both featured regularly for the Austrian giants in the Champions League during 2021/22, but were far from Leeds’ only representatives in last year’s competition.

Tyler Adams made four appearances in the Champions League group stage for RB Leipzig – another club within the Red Bull satellite which provided the bulk of Marsch’s coaching education – as well as three Europa League outings en route to the semi-finals.

Luis Sinisterra arrived at Elland Road a day after Adams and went one step further than his new teammate with Feyenoord, reaching the final of the Europa Conference League, UEFA’s new tertiary international club competition.

The Colombian lost out to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma but was voted Conference League Young Player of the Season after an 11-goal haul across 18 matches – qualification matches inclusive.

Marc Roca’s involvement with Bayern Munich was admittedly limited last season, but even he made – an albeit fleeting – appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals, as well as featuring during the previous rounds.

What Leeds have done is added European-level quality to a squad which was in desperate need of a facelift.

Marsch inherited a team populated largely by players who gained promotion under Marcelo Bielsa three years earlier, and a crop of up-and-coming, but not-quite-Premier-League-ready youngsters.

Leeds’ five senior additions in this summer’s transfer market have at the very least raised the floor of the squad, even if the ceiling is to be lowered by the Kalvin Phillips’ exit, and anticipated departure of Raphinha.

It is entirely plausible on the opening day of the season that Leeds could line-up in a formation containing seven players with Champions League experience.

Equally, Marsch could field a functional line-up consisting of eight-or-more internationals, even discounting Raphinha and the already-departed Phillips.

With this group, Leeds should not suffer in the same way as they did last season when injuries decimated the squad.

Additionally, youngsters Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood appear to be genuine first-team contenders after a season of gradual integration.

A £100 million outlay and a stronger core with more experience at an even higher level comes with increased expectation, even if the same figure is expected to be recouped from Phillips and Raphinha sales, if the latter comes to pass.

Few anticipate a top half finish as was achieved under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020/21 because there remains so many incalculable elements, namely 38 football matches to be played.

Battling against relegation once more, though, would be a far from optimal outcome given the thought and resources that went into ousting the aforementioned Argentine and backing his successor.

Jesse Marsch has seen his squad supplemented by three players he has previously mentored, to the tune of £55 million, a wide forward with 38 goal involvements last season and an Under-21 European Championships winner – tremendous faith has been placed in the coach’s abilities.

A fast opening to 2022/23 will supplant fears of relegation with mid-table ambitions, but pressure will only intensify if Leeds replicate last season’s start.

In the most black-and-white terms, Leeds’ season – and Jesse Marsch’s fortunes as United boss – could hinge on the summer signings making up for Phillips and Raphinha’s impact in the aggregate.

The Whites’ tour of Australia, where all but Roca – who featured against Blackpool – will make their Leeds debuts, is a dress rehearsal for the upcoming campaign.

Seven Leeds United players who have a point to prove during pre-season Australia tour
Jesse Marsch's 26-man squad flew out to Australia on Saturday and there will be many down under desperate to make a positive impression or prove their doubters wrong

Jesse Marsch and his 26-man Leeds United squad have taken to the air this weekend as they travel to Australia for this summer’s pre-season tour. The Whites will take on Brisbane Roar on Thursday, July 14, with games to follow against Premier League opposition in Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

The headline from Marsch’s squad announcement inevitably surrounded one of the omitted names, with Raphinha remaining in the UK. That news all but confirmed earlier reports that the Brazilian has asked not to travel to Australia as he attempts to accelerate his departure from Elland Road - presumably to Barcelona or Chelsea.

The more positive of those in West Yorkshire will have been drawn to the fact that all six summer signings are included, with the tour of Australia presenting a chance to see all but Roca, who played against Blackpool on Thursday, for the first time in a Leeds shirt - the new one as well.

But those three pre-season games are not just a parade for shiny new signings. There are plenty within that 26-man squad who have a serious point to prove, whether that be young players returning from loans or those that have been pushed to the fringes by said arrivals. A good pre-season tour under the watchful eye of Whites boss Marsch could be the foundation for a breakthrough season at Elland Road.

Here are Seven players with a point to prove down under.

Leif Davis
The omission of Junior Firpo - reportedly a precautionary measure due to a knock - has opened the door for Leif Davis to really make an impression. There have been doubts about the 22-year-old’s capabilities, having made just 12 Championship appearances for Bournemouth last season, but he has seemingly shown enough in training for Marsch to resist a new left-back.

Junior Firpo will be Leeds’ first-choice next season, but with Stuart Dallas out for at least the rest of the year, there is a chance for someone to step into the back-up role. Leo Hjelde and Pascal Struijk have both featured in the role but Davis will hope his specialism at left-back can help him in Australia.

Leo Hjelde
With four senior centre-backs all travelling, Leo Hjelde’s minutes will likely come at left-back and he will fancy his chances at making that role his own after an impressive debut last season - the 18-year-old came on as a first-half substitute in the 3-2 win at West Ham in January and put in a composed and mature performance.

As with Davis, a couple of strong performances in Australia could all but confirm his place as the second-choice in the role, with Marsch likely to prefer the Norwegian’s physicality, so long as he can prove a threat going forward.

Cody Drameh
Cody Drameh’s loan move to Cardiff City last season could not have gone better. The right-back played 22 times in the Championship last season, winning the Bluebirds' Player of the Season award despite only joining in January.

He will have understandably been disheartened by the speed at which Leeds signed Rasmus Kristensen, suggesting they saw right-back as a priority position following Luke Ayling’s surgery and subsequent lengthy absence. But the young full-back’s performance against Blackpool will have given Marsch plenty to think about, and a few similar performances down under will only strengthen his claim.

Adam Forshaw
With all the talk of Leeds’ new-look midfield, one would be forgiven for overlooking Adam Forshaw, but the 30-year-old proved upon his return from a long-term injury last season that he remains invaluable to the club - it’s exactly why he signed a one year extension in January.

There have been concerns that changing too much too quickly could lead to more problems in midfield, and Forshaw will be hoping such worries rest in Marsch’s head. His calming presence in midfield and vast experience will keep him in high regard, and a strong pre-season campaign could well put him into the starting line-up for the first league match against Wolves.

Daniel James
Many felt for Dan James last season. Signed for £24million on deadline day last summer, the Welshman spent much of the last campaign leading the line in a role that he is not used to, nor is he equipped for. Effort and commitment were never missing - in fact it went too far against Chelsea - but it just never really worked.

The new season provides a clean slate for the 24-year-old, who will be desperate to prove his worth in a position that actually suits him. James was partially excused last season for lacking the quality upfront, but he will need to perform from the offset out wide or he’ll likely face hasty criticism.

Crysencio Summerville
Raphinha’s imminent departure could be the sliding doors moment for Crysencio Summerville to seriously break into the first-team. The 20-year-old tried to force a move away in January, frustrated by a lack of opportunities and desperate to play, and now his Brazilian teammate’s departure could provide exactly that.

The Dutchman will by no means be a regular starter next season - the £22million signing of Luis Sinisterra adds another potential hurdle - but his development into one of the most exciting young talents will put him in good stead for regular football. And if he can prove his quality against senior opposition in Australia, next season could well be a breakthrough.

Rodrigo
Leeds United’s record signing will enter his third season at Elland Road this year, with many still sceptical that he will ever fulfil his £27million arrival. The Spaniard has scored 13 goals and added a further three assists during his time in West Yorkshire, but continually drifted in and out of games and lacked season-long consistency.

Now 31-years-old, next season may well be Rodrigo’s final chance to assert himself into Marsch’s side and win over the majority of Whites fans. He showed signs of invaluable leadership qualities during last season's relegation run-in, but will need to pair that with the quality he possesses if he is to finally prove his worth.

"We're hopeful that it's a little bit faster because Junior healed really, really quickly last time after the MCL injury. We're looking very closely at Leif Davis and we think he's done really well. We have also other solutions, like Pascal and potentially Jack [Harrison].

https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-united/leeds-united-boss-jesse-marsch-reveals-fresh-victor-orta-transfer-talks-after-injury-update-3766022

...men altså, ny venstreback kan ankomme:
"When it comes to recruitment, I believe that that Victor Orta and Gaby Ruiz do an incredible job of looking around the world and understanding what the demands are of the style of football that the manager wants to play and then providing really good possibilities as to what what those players could be and what fits could be. So yeah, I mean, we've had those discussions.”

Robin Koch hails 'enormous' Leeds United development and declares his new season aim
Robin Koch has declared his aims for his third season as a Leeds United player and hailed an "enormous" boost to the Whites squad this summer.

“The club did a great job,” said Koch to German outfit Bild, talking about United's recruitment this summer.

“Tyler in particular has often shown what he can do in the Bundesliga at RB Leipzig.

"He’s a top player and from what I can tell from the first few days, he’s also a top guy.

"He and the other newcomers will strengthen our team enormously.”

Koch has amassed 38 appearances in his two seasons so far at Leeds, 30 of which have been Premier League starts.

The German has been deployed as both a centre-back and a holding midfielder by both former boss Marcelo Bielsa and new head coach Jesse Marsch who also used Koch as a right back at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Assessing his aims for his third year with Leeds, 25-year-old Koch added: “This is my third season here in Leeds.

"I know what I can give the team and the team knows what they have in me.

"I want to continue to be an important part of the team under the new coach and play a central role.

"I’m always working on myself to constantly improve myself.”

Leeds United not Gold Coast's big story but 5am WhatsApps and noises from camp tell tale
Leeds United didn’t make the front or back page of the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday morning a beach brawl, Kiss concert and the State of Origin saw to that – but they’re making the right noises.

By Graham Smyth Thursday, 14th July 2022, 7:00 am

How big of a deal the Whites are in this part of the world depends largely on who you talk to. The local community close to the Cbus Super Stadium appear well briefed on the arrival of Jesse Marsch’s men and, of course, there are Whites fans everywhere you go so there were hundreds at an open training session and there will be thousands at today’s game against Brisbane Roar.

Roar midfielder Jay O’Shea, a former team-mate of Liam Cooper’s at Chesterfield, anticipates an atmosphere tilted heavily in Leeds’ favour and the distinct feel of an away game for the local side.

For Australia’s Leeds United community this tour is, like the last one, a godsend, a chance to see their idols and idols-in-the-making close up and personal.

For the general populous, Leeds aren’t the big story this week. Wednesday’s State of Origin rugby league game between New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons was front and back news as Leeds went about their own pre-game business.

Sport in general is an obsession Down Under – the facilities available on the Gold Coast for all levels of sport are remarkable – and this particular game captures the imagination in a huge way.

It piqued some of the Leeds camp too – Liam Cooper and a number of rugby league loving backroom staff made plans to attend the game, at the same Suncorp Stadium that will host their own match against Aston Villa this weekend.

That particular clash could be the first real chance to draw anything like a conclusion about Marsch’s squad this summer and as long as tonight’s Queensland Champions Cup opener against Brisbane Roar goes to plan, Leeds will head into the Villa fixture in a good mood.

Marsch’s positivity, that never really faltered in the face of a relegation battle, has clearly found its mark with the players and the hymn sheets have been passed out.

Players are never going to throw themselves under the bus in pre-season with an ill-judged or negative remark that could impact on their game time but Patrick Bamford is too genuine a character to play make believe about the mood in the camp. His insistence that things feel good has been echoed by enough voices, enough times, to take at face value.

It’s reassuring to hear that Marsch has taken a leading role in the gently-gently nature of Bamford’s return to football, urging patience and caution.

Any time spent around the players, even when the cameras are not trained on them, reveals a group enjoying each other’s company. Diego Llorente, a quiet sort, being such an animated and vocal part of an in-gym inter-squad competition bodes well. The new boys gelling so quickly that Bamford was desperate to highlight it, unprompted, in an interview, speaks volumes.

The squad feel good. The staff feel good, barring one or two who perhaps didn’t stick as rigidly as they could have to the jetlag advice put forward by head of head of medicine and performance Rob Price.

Despite Price’s best efforts, which included red light therapy to stimulate melatonin and condition the players’ bodies for sleep, the time zone did have its way, a little, with some of the players. When a message popped up in their WhatsApp group at 5am on Tuesday morning asking if anyone else was up, the replies were instant and numerous. By 7am a group of around 10 were enjoying a beach stroll together.

Leeds have had a good dressing room for a while now yet with so many newcomers it was important to ensure their arrival only enhanced the culture and the atmosphere around the team.

Luis Sinisterra made a point of praising his fellow players for the welcome he received, Marc Roca has been taken in by the Spanish group and others, while both Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson have quickly made themselves at home among their new peers.

Rasmus Kristensen is clearly no wallflower and is likely to be as popular in the stands as he is with team-mates this season. Even Darko Gyabi, expected to have to fight his way into the senior plans, looks like he belongs already, along with fellow teenager Archie Gray.

It helps that the new players are rated by their colleagues. Nothing eases a transition quite like footballing ability.

So the mood is good. The fans in Australia are feeling it and those back home appear reasonably content, which for a club who wriggled out of relegation on the final day of the season and have just sold two of their stars, is some going.

On the incoming transfer front so many boxes appear to have been ticked that complaints can be few and far between. There are still boxes to tick and concerns to be allayed, little injuries and niggles that shed light on areas still in need of strengthening – there always will be – but the summer Leeds have had so far could have been very different and far less positive.

A good pre-season provides no guarantee of a successful season to come but a bad pre-season can be impossible to recover from. Even if they are not the big noise on the Gold Coast this week, Leeds are at least sounding good. The next task is to look good.

Within the group he has brought Down Under there is a group of young players whose ability gives him confidence about the direction the club is heading in.

"I would say with Darko [Gyabi], with Archie Gray, with Cree Summerville, with Sam Greenwood and with Joffy Gelhardt, we have a core of really young talented players that we think can be a big part of the future,” he said.

"If you would look at we have, this group of leaders that are somewhere around 30 years of age, and then we have this group that's like 20 to 25. And then we have this really young group. And so when you think about the progression of what the team and the club can become in the upcoming years, I think as a manager with the kind of football I like to play and the kinds of people I like to invest in, I feel like I'm in the perfect spot and really excited for what the future will hold.”

“He’s a lefty, I’m a righty so we already have our sides figured out. It’s still in the developing phase but I think we have
a really good balance when we play with each other.”

Asked about those who had caught his eye, Adams added: “There’s a bunch of quality players, Luis (Sinisterra) is a
new guy as well and you could see his talent right away and what he brings to the table. Robin Koch, I played against
him when he was at Freiburg in the Bundesliga and you can see his quality.”

- Han også trekker frem 'den vennlige garderoben'
This group has been so welcoming and that caught me a little bit by surprise. Whenever you’re the new guy in the
locker room it can cause a bit of upturn but coming in knowing a few of the guys already, playing against Jack
(Harrison) in the past, knowing Jesse, knowing Brenden (Aaronson) and Rasmus (Kristensen) and some of these guys,
we’ve come together and that’s a good feeling.”
