"KEVIN BLACKWELL has admitted that "in an ideal world" he would have kept Rob Hulse and says a need to generate transfer funds was a major factor in Leeds United's decision to sell the striker.
The 25-year-old underwent a medical at Sheffield United yesterday after an initial fee of £2.1m was agreed between the two Yorkshire rivals.
Add-ons based on Hulse's performance and whether the Blades stay in the Premiership could take the sum towards £3m and Blackwell is already looking to re-invest a portion of the fee with Luton captain Kevin Nicholls last night on the verge of completing a £700,000 move.
The Leeds manager said: "In an ideal world, you always keep your best players and then add to them. But it isn't an ideal world.
"I wish Rob all the best, he has been a great lad and a good ambassador for the club. I hope he goes on to do well in the Premier League with Sheffield United."
Leeds invested almost £3.5m to sign Hulse, Robbie Blake, Richard Cresswell and Dan Harding last summer but their spending power this time around has been restricted by the ending of the parachute payment for clubs relegated from the Premiership.
For the past two seasons, United have received an annual payment of around £7m and Blackwell said: "If you haven't got money to spend, it makes it difficult.
"I have to generate money because the club has lost the parachute payment but this year will still have to pay the £9m wages of people who aren't even still here.
"At the end of this season, the club will be in great shape. But we have to get there and I have to keep the club going forward on no money. That is why I have to wheel and deal to work with what I have got.
"My track record here has seen people come in for a lot less than what they have left for. We have doubled our money on Rob Hulse. Matthew Spring and Clarke Carlisle came in for nothing, as did Danny Cadamarteri. Simon Walton also did not cost us a penny and yet we brought in around £1m (by selling those players).
"It is pleasing to do the business right. My responsibility, and I will never forget this, is to look after the finances of this club and not just the football. So, when a situation comes along where I can help the club financially, then I have to do it."
United's striking riches last season contrasted sharply with their lack of numbers in midfield, as illustrated by two loan players, Jonathan Douglas and Liam Miller, making a combined total of 73 appearances.
The imminent arrival of Nicholls from Luton to join summer recruits, Seb Carole and David Livermore, should go some way to redressing such an imbalance.
Blackwell said: "Kevin will bring extra fire to the midfield because he is that sort of character.
"He is, for me, a Leeds United player because we are traditionally respected for having a more than aggressive midfield.
"Kevin is in that mould and with him alongside Shaun Derry, I think we will be guaranteed a few fireworks."
Robbie Elliott, who turned down the offer of a new contract from Newcastle earlier this summer, and former Celtic midfielder Mark Fotheringham have been released after a short trial."
