25/8:

Chelsea 1 Portsmouth 0

Frank Lampard's first-half goal moved Chelsea to the top of the Barclays Premier League and cast doubt on the ability of Portsmouth goalkeeper David James to reclaim the England number one jersey.
James, who watched Paul Robinson drop a real clanger in England's defeat to Germany on Wednesday night, did not enhance his own case when he failed to prevent Lampard's effort from hitting the net.
James is hoping to replace Robinson for England's two European Championship qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month and could ill afford such a blunder in front of the watching Steve McClaren.
Chelsea began in their customary attacking fashion and almost took a first-minute lead when Claudio Pizarro sent a low drive just beyond the reach of James and his right-hand upright.
In the 10th minute, the home side put together another fine move, with Pizarro and Florent Malouda combining on the left-blank.
However, Malouda's left-foot shot from an acute angle could only find the side-netting.
Two minutes later, a free-kick from Malouda almost paid dividends for the home side but Pizarro's header was just too high to trouble James.
Portsmouth have never beaten Chelsea in eight meetings since they returned to the Premier League in 2003 and, although they had taken five points from three games prior to their trip to Stamford Bridge, Harry Redknapp's side showed little desire to change that record.
But the visitors did enough to stifle the home side and such was their success that Jose Mourinho spent much of the first half berating his side for not taking the game to their opponents.
Chelsea found themselves having to defend for the first time in the game and, in the 23rd minute, Pompey almost took the lead.
Matt Taylor found himself with time and space in the penalty area and his curling shot deflected inches wide of Petr Cech's far post.
Moments later, Lauren tried his luck from distance but his effort failed to trouble Cech.
But Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 31st minute thanks to England midfielder Lampard.
The goal owed much to the bravery of Didier Drogba, who collected a kick in the face for his efforts as he found Lampard with a flick-on.
Lampard ran clear of the Pompey defence to drive the ball under James. The England stopper should really have done better but, although he got a hand to the drive, he could not prevent it going in.
It was his second goal in four days after the midfielder had netted for England in their 2-1 defeat by Germany at Wembley on Wednesday night.
It was the signal for Chelsea to increase the pace and moments later Shaun Wright-Phillips skied an 18-yard effort high over the crossbar.
It was all Chelsea now and in the 42nd minute Wright-Phillips almost managed to get on the end of a cross from Drogba.
But the diminutive winger could not anticipate the flight of the ball adequately.
Moments later, Lampard almost made it two but James was equal to his quickly-taken free-kick and managed to save comfortably.
Chelsea began where they left off and a clever move involving Malouda and Drogba ended with Wright-Phillips shooting just wide of the target from the edge of the penalty area.
A minute later, Portsmouth should have equalised when Davis collected a neat pass from Kanu only to fire over the crossbar from eight yards.
The visitors squandered another opportunity in the 58th minute when a counter-attack caught Chelsea's defence napping but Gary O'Neil could not find the target from the edge of the penalty area when presented with a clear shot at goal.
Portsmouth continued to push for an equaliser but Cech gathered the ball safely when Sylvain Distin looked to prosper from Sully Muntari's long ball into the penalty area in the 67th minute.
Yet, Chelsea showed they were very much in charge when Malouda sent a 20-yard effort just inches wide two minutes later.
James was at his best to prevent Drogba from adding a second goal fives minutes from time when he took advantage of a fine pass from Malouda to deliver a stinging drive which the Pompey did well to hold on to.
But Chelsea were lucky to escape three minutes from time when a header from Hermann Hreidarsson was cleared off the line by Ashley Cole.

Chelsea: Cech, Essien, Terry, Ben-Haim, Ashley Cole,Wright-Phillips (Joe Cole 75), Obi (Belletti 65), Lampard,Malouda, Drogba, Pizarro (Kalou 63).
Subs Not Used: Cudicini, Alex.
Goals: Lampard 31.

Portsmouth: James, Lauren (Pamarot 82), Distin, Campbell,Hreidarsson, O'Neil (Mwaruwari 61), Davis, Utaka, Muntari,Taylor (Nugent 83), Kanu.
Subs Not Used: Ashdown, Hughes.

Portsmouth v Leeds United: Pompey set to ring changes

Portsmouth are set to rest Kanu, Sol Campbell and David James at home to unbeaten League One visitors Leeds United in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
David Nugent, still the subject of transfer speculation, is likely to replace Kanu while a defensive reshuffle will be needed to fill the gap left by Campbell who has only just returned from a groin injury.
Manager Harry Redknapp will field some of his "fringe players" including goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown who is likely to deputise for England hopeful James.
New England Under 21 defender Martin Cranie is also in contention along with Richard Hughes and young Frenchman Arnold Mvuemba but Linvoy Primus (knee), Pedro Mendes (groin) and Nico Kranjcar (foot) are unlikely to be considered yet despite returning to training

JORDAN WON'T SHOW SYMPATHY
Joe Jordan feels sorry for the Leeds fans who used to worship him as the old gap-toothed tiger in attack but now suffer the consequences of the Yorkshire club's bitter decline.
But it will not stop Portsmouth's coach wanting to knock his former team out of the Carling Cup at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
Leeds have made a remarkable start to the season after being relegated to League One and deducted 15 points because of financial problems regarding the club entering administration.
They have won their first three league matches and almost wiped out their points deficit but Jordan insists: "They will get no sympathy from me during the cup tie and it will be the same the other way round."
Now 55, Jordan wears spectacles and has a receding hairline and looks nothing like the rugged Scottish striker who sacrificed his front teeth as he battered goals and goalkeepers in the 1970s.
He was eight years with Leeds, having been signed as a teenager from Morton for £15,000. He also went on to play for Manchester United and AC Milan and managed Bristol City.
He said: "I find that against teams I've been with before I really want to win more than ever. I suppose it's a case of wanting to impress old friends."
Given his connections, Jordan admits he would have relished a tie at Elland Road but he added: "Professionally speaking it is good to be drawn at home in these circumstances.
"We are very strong at Fratton Park and with a favourable draw we are capable of not only winning this game but going all the way."
Pompey, though, are likely to be without striker Kanu, who has again started the season impressively, star defender Sol Campbell, midfielders Pedro Mendes and Nico Kranjcar and full-back Lauren.
Manager Harry Redknapp wants to rest them even though they are now over their injuries.
David Nugent, for whom transfer speculation persists just a few weeks after his £6million move from Preston, is set to be recalled up front while a defensive reshuffle is likely to see Noe Pamarot replace Campbell and Jamie Ashdown deputise for goalkeeper David James, who also looks like being rested.
Nugent is again being linked with Derby while Pompey have not denied their interest in Bolton's Nicolas Anelka, having missed out on Yakubu who is set to finalise his transfer from Middlesbrough to Everton this week.
Redknapp said: "I don't want to sell David but Kanu, Benjani and John Utaka are all doing well.
"He has to be patient to get in the team but the Leeds game is a chance for some of our fringe players."

Portsmouth v Leeds preview
Both teams to make changes

Leeds United travel to Premier League Portsmouth for their Carling Cup second round clash.
Both teams have made impressive starts to their respect league campaigns - indeed Leeds have a 100 per cent record after three games.
Leeds came through their first round encounter with Macclesfield, but manager Dennis Wise does not have a trip to Wembley in mind.

Changes
"We'll be playing some youngsters at Portsmouth," said Wise.
"It's a small squad, and there's not too much we can do, but some of them do need a rest."
Wise will hand starts to Ben Parker, Jonny Howson and Scott Gardner, but 16-year-old starlet Tom Elliott misses out through injury.
Likewise, Portsmouth chief Harry Redknapp will not be fielding his first choice XI.
Kanu, Sol Campbell and David James are all set to be rested, with Pedro Mendes, Lauren and Nico Kranjcar already sidelined.
Pompey's fringe players Jamie Ashdown, Noe Pamarot and summer signing David Nugent should get the chance to impress.
