Owls target signing No 2

SHEFFIELD Wednesday were today believed to be trying to make Sunderland midfield player Graham Kavanagh their second loan signing in 24 hours after the arrival of defender Michael Johnson from Derby.
Kavanagh, a Republic of Ireland international, has been linked with Leeds United and Sheffield United, as well as the Owls in recent weeks.
But he is now thought to be Wednesday's priority target.
Manager Brian Laws would almost certainly want to land the Dubliner on a month's loan in time for tomorrow's match against Hull.
It appears that the decision could be down to the player himself.
Laws has confirmed that the Owls have been in touch with two clubs - one of them Derby in connection with Johnson - and agreed, in principle, on wages.
The Owls manager is keen to add experience to his team, and both Johnson, aged 34, and Kavanagh, 33, fit the bill.
Kavanagh has played for Middlesbrough, Stoke and Cardiff and was a £500,000 buy from Wigan a year ago.
(......) "New faces can rub off on our players, freshen them up and help to recover confidence."
If the Owls manager does not land Kavanagh then it would be too late to sign anyone else in time for tomorrow's match so he would renew his search next week.
One possible snag is that the midfielder has been talking of a desire to win back his place at Sunderland, where he has been down the pecking order this season after twice having knee surgery in 2006-07. He came through a reserve game this week.
Kavanagh said: "The fitness is really good. I've played seven or eight games now."
But he also admitted he spoke to manager Roy Keane a month ago about the possibility of going out on loan

Owls sign Kavanagh on loan deal

Kavanagh has not played for Sunderland this season
Sheffield Wednesday have signed veteran Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh on an emergency loan deal until the end of October.
Kavanagh is eligible to to make his Owls debut against Hull on Saturday.
The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland star joined Sunderland in August 2006 and helped them win promotion from the Championship last season.
Owls boss Brian Laws told Wednesday's website: "He is a top player and will bring many qualities to our squad."
Kavanagh, who has also played for Middlesbrough, Stoke, Cardiff and Wigan, has not featured for the Black Cats so far this term.
"I am delighted Graham decided to join us because several other clubs were interested in him," added Laws.
Wednesday have lost all six of their Championship games so far this season and are bottom of the table.

Wise wary of being loan arranger

Leeds manager Dennis Wise admits he has learned his lesson on loan signings.
Wise knows his squad is short on numbers but he is prepared to wait until the transfer window reopens in January when he can make permanent signings.
He was caught out in April when Bolton recalled central defender Lubomir Michalik little more than 24 hours before United's game at Southampton, throwing the manager's preparations into turmoil.
Jamie Clapham of Wolves is the only loan player at Elland Road at the moment and his stay is due to end next weekend.
Wise said: "I am happy with what I've got, to a certain degree, but there are two players I would like to bring in. The chairman knows who they are and we will try to get them at the right time.
"I learned my lesson last year with loan signings. I got done big time by Bolton, who pulled the plug on me with Lubo at the last minute, and I don't ever want to be in that position again.
"We were playing Southampton on the Saturday and on the Friday I had three players injured and one of them had to play. I had done all the set-plays, prepared everything all week and I got a phone call at 12.30 saying Lubo was needed back at Bolton.
"When you bring loan players in you have to talk them through everything you have been through with the others over six or eight weeks. It takes a long time and messes the pattern up.
"That is why I want my own players, so they all understand what they need to do and there are no excuses."

FERGIE HINTS AT LOAN DEPARTURES
Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted a number of his budding Manchester United stars will go out on loan following the club's Carling Cup exit to Coventry.
The Red Devils boss had earmarked the competition for a number of squad players to garner additional first-team experience.
However, following the 2-0 defeat to Coventry at Old Trafford, Ferguson believes some youngsters will have to depart due to the competition for places at United.
Ferguson has stated the likes of Gerard Pique and Danny Simpson could be utilised by the first team, leaving the likes of Jonny Evans, Chris Eagles, Lee Martin and Dong Fangzhou open to leaving.
"They've not had enough football as a team," he said on Sky Sports News. "We looked at the League Cup as an avenue for these players to play in."Now that's gone I think we'll have to review the situation with one or two of them going on loan, because they do need football.

Bridges: Quakers pull out of move
THE topsy-turvy career of Hull City striker Michael Bridges is further under the microscope after manager Phil Brown made it public that he was prepared to let his man go out on loan.
Bridges has dropped down the pecking order at the KC Stadium and Darlington were swift to make their interest known in taking the North Shields-born hitman back to his roots.
But Darlington manager Dave Penney has decided not to persevere with his attempt to sign Bridges, who so recently became an instant hero at Leeds United following his switch from Sunderland
Bridges was wanted by Penney to replace the injured Pawel Abbott, who formerly played for Huddersfield Town.
But the Quakers boss said: "Bridges won't be coming here. A fax was sent out to all clubs, on his say so, revealing that he was available for loan.
"We got the fax so we made a phone call to see what the situation was, but were told that it looks as though he's going to a Championship club.

"I've heard Preston North End are interested and Leeds are possibles too."
Leeds, however, say they have no interest in taking back their former golden boy, whose career with them became ravaged by injury.

For dagenes Leeds United passer Bridges best som nostalgi. Vi så han mot Leeds ifjor. Treg, stasjonær og bare en skygge av spilleren som spilte for oss under DOL og før han ble skadet. Han passer definitivt ikke inn i Wise & Gus sin filosofi: "We're gonna run their balls off for 80 minutes, then win the game"   [8D]

Hartson moves to Norwich on loan
Former Wales international John Hartson has joined Championship side Norwich City on a month's loan.
The 32-year-old striker opted for Carrow Road after being told he is surplus to requirements at West Brom.
Norwich are hoping Hartson can help end their run of nine hours without a goal, and have an option to extend the deal.
"The situation we are in demands players who know how to operate in the positions they play," caretaker manager Jim Duffy told the club's website.

Leeds United on loan alert

LEEDS UNITED may be forced to look for new options in the emergency loan market when Mark De Vries and Wayne Andrews reach the end of their deals next week.
United were expected to keep at least one of the strikers beyond their initial month-long contracts at Elland Road, but unexpected circumstances are threatening to prevent Dennis Wise from securing an extension.
De Vries and Andrews are due to officially return to their parent clubs after Saturday's game between United and Millwall at Elland Road, and their departures would again leave Wise facing a shortage of forwards in his squad.
De Vries was loaned to Leeds by Leicester City last month but the Championship club parted company with manager Gary Megson yesterday ahead of his anticipated appointment as Bolton's new boss. It is not clear whether City would be willing to sanction a second agreement with Leeds.
Megson, who was appointed by Leicester just six weeks ago, found no place for De Vries in his side at the Walkers Stadium, but a change of manager may bring the Dutchman back into the fold.

Andrews' future has also been complicated by the recent announcement that Coventry City are now operating under a transfer embargo amid financial problems at the Ricoh Arena.
The Sky Blues forward has made only one league outing for United while De Vries has been more heavily involved, completing five appearances and scoring the winning goal during Leeds' recent 1-0 win over Yeovil.
The pair were brought in initially after Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford incurred one-match bans against Gillingham, but Wise's selection problems have refused to ease.

Tore Andre Flo is out for six weeks after undergoing foot surgery and Leon Constantine is in the final stages of his recovery from a broken ankle.

Meanwhile, a young Leeds United reserve side held Sheffield United to a goalless draw at Don Valley Stadium last night.

Tror ikke de alltid har en tilbakekallingsmulighet, det kommer evt. som en klausul i låneavtalen hvis eiende klubb ønsker det.

Andrews back at Coventry
Striker's Elland Road loan stint ends

Wayne Andrews is back with Coventry City after his Leeds United loan came to an end.
The striker, who was an unused substitute in Saturday's 4-2 win over Millwall, made two appearances during his Elland Road spell.
The pacey 29-year-old appeared in Leeds' 1-0 win at Oldham and also their Johnstone's Paint Trophy success at Darlington.
With fellow loanee Mark de Vries also back at Leicester, manager Dennis Wise has just Tomi Ameobi as back-up to starters Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford.
With former Port Vale man Leon Constantine still a few weeks from featuring and Tore Andre Flo on the sidelines, Wise is mulling over bolstering his options.

Loan striker Andrews is sent back to Coventry by Wise

Wayne Andrews

Leeds United have sent Wayne Andrews back to Coventry City with Leon Constantine ready to begin his first-team comeback.
Constantine was planning to take part in his first session of full training for almost four months today, but Andrews' short stay with Leeds has come to an end after a low-key loan at Elland Road.
The striker was signed for a month at the beginning of October but made only two appearances for United, one during their Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Darlington.
Coventry would have allowed Dennis Wise to extend the deal had United's manager wished to retain Andrews, but the 29-year-old has returned to the Ricoh Arena after sitting as an unused substitute through Saturday's 4-2 victory over Millwall.

Leeds were more interested in renewing the loan deal of Mark De Vries, who arrived at Elland Road at the same time as Andrews to help cover for suspensions to Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol, but a broken toe forced the Dutchman to cut short his temporary transfer from Leicester City last week.
United's boss has coped with a lack of forwards this season after seeing the absence of Constantine â€" missing since July with a broken ankle - compounded by the unreliable fitness of Tore Andre Flo, who recently underwent surgery on his foot.
But Constantine has met his predicted target for recovery â€" set for the end of this month â€" and the former Port Vale forward was due to resume training with the first-team squad today, moving him closer to his competitive debut for United.
Constantine is unlikely to be involved in tomorrow's reserve game against Hartlepool at Elland Road and may not be risked during Saturday's trip to Carlisle, but Leeds have six games planned for November â€" including FA Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy fixtures â€" and Constantine can expect to make his comeback in the near future.

Kish's glad to be back at Leeds

Radostin Kishishev

RADOSTIN Kishishev reluctantly walked away from a transfer to Leeds United in the summer, and the midfielder was adamant that Elland Road would be his only destination if Leicester City released him on loan this season.
The Bulgarian international proved as good as his word on Wednesday when he joined United on a month-long deal, and Kishishev will not complain if the short-term opportunity leads to the longer agreement that was inches from his signature in June.
Kishishev held talks with Leeds after leaving Charlton at the end of last season, but United were in administration and constrained by a transfer embargo.
When it became clear that their problems would not be resolved quickly, Kishishev took a grip of his future and signed a two-year deal with Leicester.
The move made sense at the time, but his spell at the Walkers Stadium has not progressed as planned.
After starting the season in City's first team, Kishishev was dropped by manager Gary Megson and was allowed to leave for Elland Road on loan this week just two months into his career in the East Midlands.
Megson himself moved on this week, becoming Bolton's manager just six weeks after taking charge of City, but even if his replacement sees more value in Kishishev, the Bulgarian midfielder would be loathe to tear himself away from Leeds for a second time.
Kishishev made 10 appearances for United last season and was heavily involved in their battle for Championship survival which proved in vain.
Relegation hurt him, even if the responsibility for the depressing outcome fell far from his door.
Kishishev said: "I said to my agent that if someone wanted me on loan, I didn't want to go to another club - I wanted to go to Leeds.
"In the summer I was very close to joining Leeds, but for certain reasons it didn't happen.
"At the time when we were negotiating, they were in big trouble. Maybe me and my family were a bit scared about the future, and what was going on.
"But if (Leicester) wanted me to go on loan then I would only go to Leeds â€" not other Championship clubs or to the Premiership.
"I'm here for one month but, depending on certain things, I could stay for a bit longer. I signed for Leicester in the summer but I've played few games there and they haven't given me much chance to show my qualities."
If Kishishev's ability has been overlooked at the Walkers Stadium, there was no such danger of a similar reaction at Elland Road.
The 33-year-old became immensely popular among United's supporters last season with his calm head and dominant style in the centre of midfield, and Wise is increasingly conscious of the effect that injuries could have on his squad.
Andrew Hughes and Alan Thompson were both doubtful ahead of yesterday's clash with Millwall, leaving two potentially first-choice midfielders on the sidelines, but Kishishev is a reliable replacement.
A lengthier deal with Leicester is likely to be on United's agenda, provided City's replacement for Megson does not order the Bulgarian back to the Walkers Stadium.
Kishishev said: "When I accept playing for Leeds, I'm not seeing where they are now.
"I see Leeds as a big club, and at the end of the career I will say 'I played for Leeds'.
"Nobody will ask me which division they were in.
"The club are big, and it's the biggest club I've played for in my career.
"To be fair I was a little bit surprised at them winning 10 games and drawing two from their first 12 games because it's a big achievement.
"But big clubs can do that. Small clubs can't. We're seeing Leeds going forward and the deduction of 15 points has already gone.
"That's good for everyone because it means we can forget the negative months and start looking forward."
Wise is keen on promoting the younger members of his squad, but he is not blind to the importance of experience.
Thompson was intended to supply the old head in midfield, but his fitness problems â€" a groin injury and a hamstring strain â€" have sidelined him for most of the past two months, and the availability of Kishishev quickly tempted Wise to move for him once United's manager realised the busy schedule facing his team before Christmas.
Wise said: "I brought Kish in because we've got (seven) games between now and December 1, and two injuries in midfield.
"It's going to be a difficult time for us.
"I could have put Jonny Howson in there but, at the moment, his form is not fantastic.
"I love Jonny to bits and he is very much a part of the future here, but this month is quite an important month and I needed an experienced campaigner.
"Kish was part of this club last year and he felt the pain. Kish wants to do well because last year it hurt him.
"He wants to make up for last year."

Owls still on Kavanagh trail

Brian Laws admits he may try to bring Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh back to Sheffield Wednesday.

Kavanagh has recently completed a month-long stint at Hillsborough to build up his match fitness, but has since returned to Sunderland.
Black Cats boss Roy Keane expects Kavanagh to feature in his plans in the coming weeks, but his Owls counterpart Laws is maintaining a watching brief.
"I understand where Roy is coming from because he needs to think about his team first and foremost," Laws told the club's official website.
"I will continue to assess the situation next week to see if there is another opportunity to bring Graham back.
"But while we are losing one experienced midfielder in Graham Kavanagh for the trip to Plymouth we are gaining another one because we have Steve Watson coming back from injury."

Meanwhile, Wednesday have posted an annual financial profit for the first time in over a decade.
The Championship club have recorded a profit of £1.5million in accounts which go up to 31st May, 2007.

Sheffield United who, it is understood, are still trying to hijack the proposed return of midfielder Graham Kavanagh on loan from Sunderland.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Laws said: "Let's take the first six games away â€" I know it sounds a bit daft â€" but if we did that and took those six games away from everyone else, we would actually be joint eighth in the league.
"Our form is reasonable since those six games," he added. "It has given us something to build upon."
Kavanagh's future remains the subject of intense speculation after his initial loan deal with the Owls expired and he was recalled by Sunderland to cover for injuries ahead of Monday night's game at Manchester City.
Laws remains in touch with Sunderland manager Roy Keane and says there may be an opportunity next week to bring the player back to Hillsborough.
But that will not stop the Blades showing interest in the former Republic of Ireland international and, if manager Bryan Robson fails in his attempt to land Bolton's Gary Speed, Kavanagh could be his target.
"To go above them (United) would be a nice position to be in, particularly after the start we've had," admitted Laws. "All the supporters, whether they are Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday will be working together and, at the moment, they're both moaning."

Leeds are pondering a loan deal for out-of-favour Leicester striker Matty Fryatt. (People)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matty_Fryatt
http://www.lcfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10274~23848,00.html

Steve Claridge's Scouting report: Matty Fryatt, Leicester City

Matty Fryatt is a hugely talented player who needs to find his best position and exert his influence on games more consistently.
Matty Fryatt is an enigma. Watch him and it is clear he is too good to leave out of this Leicester side but once you have seen what he is capable of you wonder what exactly is his best position. In the ideal team he would play in that difficult, withdrawn role just behind the centre-forward but at the moment Leicester's squad does not have the right balance to utilise that formation effectively. The best shape for him, unfortunately, would not get the best out of his team-mates at present.
A lot of Fryatt's good work, however, is done in that area. At 21 he has fantastic poise and balance in possession, is good with either foot and his control and ability to deal with the ball in tight areas of the pitch are at times superb. He has excellent vision and can pick a pass earlier than most. A lot of people do not realise that split-second can be the difference between a good run from his team-mate and that same run where the player got caught offside because the pass was delayed. Some players' good traits work only up to a certain level but he has the sort of talent that thrives equally well against both top-class opponents and not so good ones.
I watched Fryatt last week against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He was comfortable on the ball all over the pitch and there was an impressive willingness to get goalside of the ball when the opposition were in possession.
Fryatt's goalscoring record at his previous club, Walsall, was good with 27 goals in 70 appearances but this is an area he has struggled with since his transfer to Leicester and he needs to improve on a ratio of one goal in six games.
He is neither massively quick nor athletic and he liked the ball to feet, particularly in and around the box. It was with one such ball that he created Leicester's opening goal at Chelsea when he received a short free-kick on the edge of the box, rolled his marker and stood a glorious ball up to the far post where a team-mate was unmarked to head home.
At 5ft 10in he is capable in the air without being truly dominant and is the type of player that can appear to lack a bit of passion. That is not the case with Fryatt. Even so, although the contributions he makes are more often than not telling ones, I would like to see him have a greater impact on games.
Because he has no outstanding physical attribute, the mental side of his game has to be good. It is. This means he plays with an intelligence that other players lack and also has a lovely first touch, which always makes the game that little bit easier, allied to a good understanding of his team-mates.
Fryatt is taking a while to find his feet at Leicester but he has been hampered by a succession of injuries and the club's constant changing of managers. But when he does settle he will surely get even better as there is nothing in his game that will deteriorate as he gets older.
He needs the chance to learn the game and just what is required to put that unquestioned ability into practice more often. Then, and only then, will he make one position his own.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane admits he may allow Graham Kavanagh to leave in January.
He told the Sunderland Echo: "Kav enjoyed his games at Sheffield Wednesday but there have been several other clubs in touch about him since.
"There has been more interest in Kav and I will probably sit down with him next week to talk it through. I also spoke to him last week about the situation.
"It's a difficult one because as much as I want to keep him I know he wants to play football, and Kav is not the only one in that situation here. As much as I have to look after the club, I have to be fair to the players."
