Villa can keep Carson - Benitez

Carson is tipped to make his England debut against Austria

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says it is up to Aston Villa if they want to make Scott Carson's loan permanent.
Carson recently revealed that a permanent move has been agreed - and Benitez says he understands why the former Leeds keeper may want to leave.
"He knows Jose Reina is top class and it'll be difficult for him to play here. Villa can decide if they want to keep him," he told his club website.
Carson is tipped to make his England debut against Austria on Friday.
"Scott is a good professional and a nice boy. This is a crucial time in his career and he needs to play," Benitez added.

England star gave cash to club-mate found in drugs raid

A Middlesbrough starlet on trial for drug dealing has told police £100 found in a raid on his home was given to him by team-mate Jonathan Woodgate, to buy a drink
Lewis Walker, aged 17, was found with £25,000 worth of cannabis and almost £2,000 cash in his bedroom on October 15 last year, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Walker told police that of £170 found in his wallet during the raid, £70 was from his wages and the other £100 was given to him the night before by Woodgate while the pair were in the Tall Trees nightclub, Yarm.
Walker said Woodgate told him to 'get himself a drink' with the £100. He added the England defender had never given him cash before.
Walker appeared in court with his mum Tracy Walker, 37, both of Kirkstone Road, Berwick Hills, Middlesbrough.
Lewis Walker denies possessing cannabis with intent to supply.
Tracy Walker has admitted possession of cannabis with intent to supply. She has also admitted possessing cocaine, but denied the more serious charge of possessing it with intent to supply.

Joachim: Like a new player

Penney praise for versatile Joachim
Manager Dave Penney has hailed Julian Joachim's versatility at Darlington after the striker's displays in his new right-midfield role.
The 33-year-old made his name as a no-nonsense frontman but has recently found a new lease of life as a right-sided winger.
"He's been fantastic for us in that wide right position," admitted Penney ahead of Saturday's trip to Brentford.
"We started him upfront at Hereford but the more I look at him more I think that playing wide on the right is his best position.
"He has set goals up for us, and scored them, but his defensive work is sometimes overlooked because he puts an excellent shift defensively. You can see he's played at a higher level."
Penney added to the Northern Echo: "He's still got the enthusiasm and its like having a new player compared to the Julian Joachim we had last season."

Midfielder gets recall

Gareth Southgate has recalled midfielder Adam Johnson from his loan spell at Watford and he may now go back into the first team.
It is the end of the midfielder's second spell away on loan from the club after he spent some time with Leeds United last season but he had a far more successful time at Watford helping them to the top of the Championship. Watford had been keen to keep the player but he is now expected to go back into the first-team picture at Boro where he has already made 18 starts for the first team.
On his departure from Vicarge Road he thanked the fans for the way they treated him, he told Watford's official website: "The fans have been excellent to me at Watford.
"It's always nice to know the fans appreciate what you're doing and I appreciate what they're doing.
"I've been impressed by the club and the way everything is run. Everyone knows what they have to do and they do it, the manager has drilled into everyone what they have to do.
"I played 11 games in a row, which I've never done in competitive football at senior level ever. The most I played for Middlesbrough is two games in a row.
"But I've come to Watford and hopefully I've proven to people that I can do it week-in, week-out and get the minutes under my belt so I'm just grateful to Watford for giving me my chance."

Ex-Man Utd, Leeds winger Sharpe launching South Africa soccer schools

Former Manchester United and Leeds midfielder Lee Sharpe is planning to launch soccer schools in South Africa.
He plans to set up NINE soccer schools in South Africa for underprivileged children.
Sharpe has one up and running in Cape Town as well as a prison team for young offenders, and hopes to have one in each South African province before the World Cup arrives in 2010.
Sharpe and a friend - former Manchester City player Greg Thompson - set up the non-profit making South Africa project after a US proposal for a commercial academy fell through.
Sharpe told the People: "We didn't set up the soccer schools to find young talent, but if there are players who are good then we will try to help them.
"We're trying to get kids out of the ghettos and a life of crime and off the streets. It's about trying to give them a little bit of hope.
"We're not making a quick hit before the World Cup and then getting out, but it is a good goal and focus for us."

Birmingham may face legal action if they appoint a new manager without the approval of potential new owner Carson Yeung.
The Blues board have met to discuss a list of candidates to replace Steve Bruce, who will quit St Andrews to become Wigan boss later this week.
Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol and ex-Wigan boss Paul Jewell are among the leading contenders with Chris Coleman, who is not enjoying the best of times at Real Sociedad, also in contention.
But Jol wants a big job in Holland while Jewell has been strongly linked with the Republic of Ireland vacancy and that may open the door to usual suspects Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle, Peter Reid and Joe Royle.

Film is offside, says Brian Clough’s widow

The widow of Brian Clough, the football manager, has condemned a forthcoming film about him based on a novel about her late husband that she says misrepresents him as a foul-mouthed, selfish man.
Barbara Clough said that she was dismayed to hear that Ealing Studios was adapting The Damned United, David Peace’s controversial novel, for the big screen. She told The Times: “I am dreading the film. If it’s close to the character portrayed in the book, then I’m very apprehensive. It’s going to be pretty dire.” Her son, Nigel Clough, the Burton Albion manager, said that although he had not read the book he supported his mother’s concerns. “The people who knew my father and worked with him will recognise if there is any truth in this piece of fiction,” he said.
Clough, who died three years ago at the age of 69, has gone down in footballing history for his early goalscoring feats as a player, his unorthodox motivational techniques as a club manager â€" instilling confidence in promising young players and remotivating ageing underachievers â€" and for taking two football teams, Derby County and Nottingham Forest, to the pinnacle of the League championship.
The Damned United, which begins filming in the spring, tells the story of Clough’s tempestous 44 days in 1974 as manager of Leeds United. Michael Sheen, whose portrayal of Tony Blair and his particular mannerisms in The Queen was hailed by critics as “beautifully lugubrious”, has been signed to star as “Cloughie”.
But the film-makers have failed to calm the fears of Clough’s family and close friends. Don Shaw, the TV and film writer, said that the novel was a gross exaggeration of what Clough was actually like. “He certainly didn’t swear, certainly not in the company of most people. He didn’t smoke either. The book has him chain-smoking. He comes across as a very aggressive, dominating character. He was certainly dominating â€" but that was through his charisma,” he said.
However, Andy Harries, the film’s producer, said: “Our goal is to tell a wonderful and extraordinary story with universal themes of success, jealousy and betrayal.” He said of the book: “It’s billed as a novel, and one should read it as a novel.”
