Hyll Healy!

Nord-Irland-sjef Nigel Worthington krever at superspissens rekordform settes pris på.

Fulhams David Healy (28) satte ny europeisk scoringsrekord i helgen.

Former Sunderland and Manchester City manager Peter Reid is pondering a return to management with Championship side Burnley. (Daily Mail)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Reid

"Leeds United
Peter Reid was out of work until March 2003, when he was appointed interim manager of Leeds United after the dismissal of Terry Venables. The Elland Road club had been hit by £80million debts after their £100million outlay on new players in the space of five seasons had failed to land them a trophy. Reid looked to be just the man to reverse the decline, especially after a 6-1 away win over Charlton Athletic and a 3-2 away win over Arsenal which ended the opposition's Premiership title hopes. But the club was still in a financial crisis and Reid's new signings over the summer of 2003 were all free transfers and loan deals. Many of them were brought in from the French League, notably Olembe and Lamine Sakho and he also brought in the comically inept Roque Junior, a Brazilian world cup winning centre half amazingly. His most important longterm signing was Kevin Blackwell who he brought in from Sheffield United to be Assistant Manager, by the end of Reid's last season Blackwell had become manager of Leeds United. As well as this Reid was forced to sell Harry Kewell who had been central to the Leeds team since the turn of the century. Reid's new signings failed to gel, Olembe seldom played, Roque Junior was sent off in his first game an embarrassing defeat to Birmingham City at home and Sakho was incapable of replacing Kewell as the pacy creator of Leeds attacks. The team lacked a midfield general as well- Reid was forced to play David Batty there. A 6-1 defeat at Portsmouth was the final straw for the club's board of directors and in November Reid was dismissed after less than eight months in charge. After his sacking the club also dispensed with many of his loan signings returning them to their clubs. Unsurprisingly a makeshift Leeds side with defenders and strikers playing in midfield were relegated at the end of the season and most of the players that Reid had used left at the end of the season as the club held a fire sale of its celebrated and less celebrated players."

"Kidd was given the role of head of youth development at Leeds United but quickly rose to the position of number two to David O'Leary a role he continued following the arrival of Terry Venables.
In January 2003 was confirmed as England's new assistant coach under Sven-Göran Eriksson in a part-time capacity, replacing Steve McClaren who had stood down at the start of November 2002 to concentrate on his full-time job at Middlesbrough.
However, he left Leeds in May 2003 after the appointment of Peter Reid as the new manager and after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer in May 2004, was forced to resign his duties with England just weeks before Euro 2004."

Grayson - Talks are ongoing
Seasiders discuss improved deal with manager

Blackpool could be set to hand their manager an improved contract after reports that Simon Grayson is attracting interest from rival clubs.
Grayson was linked with the recently filled managerial vacancy at Preston North End, while he is reportedly on a five-man shortlist to take over at Burnley.
However, after insisting that the talk was speculation, Grayson has confirmed that contract discussions are ongoing.
"Everybody in life wants better contracts, don't they?" he is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.
"It's an ongoing situation, but not a major issue for me."

Sherriff has an able deputy

Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore has warned Shane Sherriff he's going to have a "fight" on his hands with Andrew Taylor for his left-back spot.
Sherriff missed Saturday's clash with Doncaster due to suspension and, although the rest gave him chance to recover from an ankle problem, his absence allowed on-loan Blackburn man Taylor to stake his claim for a first team spot.
Moore told the club's official website: "Shane has had an ankle problem. How he played in the cup game at Chesterfield was unbelievable, as it was so swollen.

Lang vei tilbake for Walton

Forgotten 1966 heroes' reward

NORMAN HUNTER finally has a 1966 World Cup winner’s medal on the way â€" and he said: “I feel like a proper hero now.
The former England defender was one of 11 players in Sir Alf Ramsey’s squad who did not get a gong after our 4-2 win over West Germany.
Before 1978, only those who actually played in the final got a medal.
But FIFA last night announced it is changing the rules so ALL players from the winning squads will get medals â€" going right back to the very first World Cup in 1930.
Leeds hardman Hunter â€" nicknamed Bites Yer Legs for his tough tackling â€" said: “I’m delighted. Not having a medal to show for the 1966 World Cup was the biggest regret of my career.
“It really rankled. All I had to show for the tournament were the memories, a tracksuit and photo.
“It’s come as a great surprise and I’m chuffed. Those guys, like me, who didn’t play in the final didn’t get anything.
“We all did our bit and it will be something to really cherish.”
FIFA’s U-turn means 122 players whose teams won finals between 1930 and 1974 now get medals.
Among those receiving a gong is SunSport columnist Jimmy Greaves, who got injured in 1966.
But the former Spurs striker said: “What’s the point of giving us all medals now? It’s really not necessary.
“In 1966 we knew you’d only get a medal if you played. Those were the rules. I’ve never been bitter.”
England’s other players who missed out on the 1966 final were John Connolly, Ron Springett, Peter Bonetti, Jimmy Armfield, Gerry Byrne, Ron Flowers, Terry Paine, Ian Callaghan and George Eastham.
FIFA made their decision after a plea by the FA and ex-Sports Minister Richard Caborn.

Life with Cloughie

Duncan Hamilton's 'Provided You Don't Kiss Me: 20 Years With Brian Clough' was named William Hill Sports Book of the Year on Monday.
"The judges were as close to unanimous in their decision as any panel is ever likely to be," said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.
BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson interviewed the winning author when the book was published in May.

"Just picture it: Brian Clough, deep into a forest in Sweden, is punching the bark of a tree. Punching it hard, too."

Clough was a controversial character

It conjures up a strange mental image, but perhaps not so odd when you are talking about one of the most colourful characters in English football history.
Since Clough's death in September 2004, a smattering of books have been published covering various aspects of his illustrious career.
Duncan Hamilton's 'Provided You Don't Kiss Me: 20 Years With Brian Clough' is the latest and almost certainly not the last.
Hamilton was in a privileged position during Clough's time at Nottingham Forest, first as an agency reporter and then as a writer for the Nottingham Evening Post.
"I dread to think how many hours of my life I spent sitting in that corridor outside his office waiting for the nod to go in," Hamilton told BBC Sport.
It is the sheer volume of hours spent in Clough's company that gives Hamilton the opportunity to offer such a rare insight into the legendary manager's life.
But he says he did not write the book so that it could be published.
"I watched the play someone wrote about him and then saw him on television and I complained to my girlfriend that no-one had done Clough in the way that I knew him," says Hamilton.
"She said 'why don't you go and write a book yourself, then?' So I tried to get down a few pages and it went from there.
"It took me 12 weeks to do the first draft and I didn't have a publisher until I'd written all but one of the chapters.

---
"I will always remember the time Brian stole a car at Luton"
Duncan Hamilton

---

"To be honest, I wasn't that bothered about it. I just wanted to write it for my daughter to give her an insight into a massive part of my life."
What a part of his life it was, too.
From the meteoric, never-to-be-repeated rise from Division Two drifters to double European Champions to the alcohol-fuelled misery of resignation and relegation, Hamilton had a front row seat for it all.
"I was very, very lucky, I know that," he explains. "At the precise moment I arrived in journalism, Clough arrived at Forest and the rest is history.
"I'm sure some people will read this book and say I haven't got it all right, but there is no definitive view of any one person.
"You can only tell the story how you saw it - someone else will probably come along and do it completely differently.
"There is a whole chapter on alcoholism but there is no mention of the bungs he is supposed to have taken.
"All I could do was portray him as I saw him and repeat the things I saw - I had no knowledge of the bungs whatsoever."
So what does Hamilton believe were the main regrets of Clough's time at Forest?

Clough's split with Taylor (left) deeply affected the Forest boss

"One of the fundamental turning points later on in his life was the death of his former assistant Peter Taylor," he added.
"Clough and Taylor fell out when Taylor was manager of Derby and until then they had been so close.
"When Peter died suddenly in 1990, I think that accelerated Brian's drinking because he regretted that they hadn't sat down and sorted it out.
"He wasn't the same for a long while after that. It bit very, very deep."
Of course any book about Clough is sure to be filled with the kind of weird and wonderful stories that made him such a unique, larger-than-life character.
But what was the prolific former Sunderland and Middlesbrough striker doing in a forest in Sweden throwing punches at a tree?
"It was on a pre-season tour and, as he told us all later, it was what's known as a 'Punch Tree'," said Hamilton.

----
"Brian Clough was a man who transcended sport, an absolute genius"
Duncan Hamilton

---

"It's a Coastal Redwood and it has got a soft bark, so he was giving it everything. It looked pretty odd from 50 yards away though, I can tell you."
Another such incident on the opening day of the 1985-86 season has stuck firmly in Hamilton's mind.
"I will always remember the time he stole a car at Luton," says Hamilton matter-of-factly.
"After the game they all got back to the team coach to discover a car was blocking their way out. He decided to move it himself and left it some way from the ground.
"The bus had barely started moving when he turned to his assistant Ron Fenton and said 'Ron, I've just nicked a car, I may be in some trouble'.
"So he did the whole thing in reverse, walked to where he had left the car and drove it back to the car park.
"It was Stuart Pearce's first game for Forest - I swear I could see his eyes going round and round thinking 'what on earth have I got myself into'!"
On reflection, Hamilton has no doubts whatsoever that he was blessed to work with one of the greats.
"Brian Clough was a man who transcended sport, an absolute genius.
"People knew all about him even if they weren't interested in football.
"As well as giving us some fantastically magical moments, you couldn't help but be hooked every time he spoke or wrote something.
"There was no-one like him before and there never will be again."

Gary McAllister favourite to take Scotland job

Former Leeds and Liverpool player Gary McAllister has been installed as the favourite to become the new manager of Scotland following the departure of Alex McLeish.

The 42-year-old, who won 57 caps for Scotland, was originally considered for the post when Walter Smith resigned in January.

Favourite: Gary McAllister could make a long awaited return

Despite being away from a coaching role since leaving Coventry City in December 2003, Tartan Army spokesman Hamish Husband thinks McAllister would do a good job: "He has been captain of Scotland, he can stand there in the dressing room and say, 'I have been here'.
"You want someone who knows what it's like to be there."
McAllister has been linked with managerial jobs in England for some time and has seemed unwilling to take such a role, but whether he would turn down an opportunity to lead his country remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, former Derby County manager Billy Davies has declared himself open to offers from the Scottish Football Association.
"I'm not ruling anything out. If somebody wants to talk to me I will listen and then make a decision.
"The Scotland job is one you don't apply for - the Scottish Football Association know exactly who they want to put in place and the type of man they're looking for.
"You'd be flattered if you can get your name down for it, but everybody in Scotland would want to manage the national team and that would always be the case."
Davies, who lost his job at Derby yesterday, has received backing for the role from former Scotland manager Craig Brown.
"I'm not in a position to advise but, if you were asking me, I would say Billy Davies is hard to beat," Brown said.
"He is available, he's outstanding and he would make a first-class Scotland manager.
A number of other names are being touted as a possible contender, including Graeme Souness, Roy Aitken, Mark McGhee, Jimmy Calderwood and Craig Levein.
The SFA will meet to discuss their recruitment process tomorrow morning.

O'Leary keen on Derby job

David O'Leary is eyeing the vacant manager's job at Derby County.
The Guardian says O'Leary's representatives have made it clear he would relish a return to football. Rams chairman Adam Pearson, who has shocked many of the Derby players and supporters with his ruthless handling of Billy Davies, was a director of Leeds when O'Leary was manager and they are said to have had a decent working relationship at Elland Road.
