Worthington - set to be confirmed as manager.

WORTHY SET FOR LONG-TERM DEAL

The Irish Football Association have called a press conference in Belfast on Friday when Nigel Worthington is expected to be confirmed as Northern Ireland manager.
Worthington's short-term deal with the province coincided with the end of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign in November.
Northern Ireland finished a respectable third behind Spain and Sweden and the IFA were impressed with the job the former international did when he succeeded Lawrie Sanchez.
Worthington, who won 66 caps for Northern Ireland, is understood to have secured a lucrative two-year deal.
The former Norwich boss has been in detailed discussions with the IFA since November.
He endured a mix bag of results in the last six games of the qualifying campaign but a superb victory against Denmark and a draw in Sweden won over the sceptics.
Worthington was part of the IFA delegation to Bratislava today for a World Cup fixtures meeting.
He will retain his backroom staff of coach Glynn Snodin and goalkeeper coach Fred Barber.

ADDICKS FOILED IN GRAY BID

Burnley have turned down a bid from Charlton for their top scorer Andy Gray.
The Addicks have been tracking Gray for a number of weeks and they have now firmed up their interest with a bid of more than £1million.
But Burnley have wasted little time in rejecting the offer - insisting they want the Scottish international to remain at Turf Moor.
Gray, 30, who has also attracted interest from Cardiff and Ipswich, has 18 months left on his current contract.

Blackwell leaves Luton
Administrators terminate manager's contract

(Cheer up, Kev.)
Kevin Blackwell has left Luton Town with immediate effect after his contract was terminated.
The former Leeds United boss handed in his resignation last week as a consequence of the club selling several players due to being in administration.
Blackwell intended to leave after the League One fixture with Bournemouth on 9th February, along with assistant Sam Ellis and coach John Carver.
But, following Tuesday night's FA Cup third-round replay defeat at Liverpool, Blackwell has parted with the Hatters now.
Prior to the 5-0 drubbing at Anfield, the Hatters' administrators accepted a loan from Luton Town Football Club 2020 Ltd.
The Nick Owen-led consortium have been given exclusive rights to purchase the club until the end of February and are also likely to be involved in the recruitment of a new manager.
A statement on Luton's official website from joint administrator Brendan Guilfoyle confirmed Blackwell's dismissal.
"After careful consideration Brendan Guilfoyle, joint administrator of Luton Town Football Club, has this morning, Wednesday January 16, 2008, with immediate effect terminated the contracts of Kevin Blackwell, the manager of Luton Town Football Club, Sam Ellis, assistant manager, and John Carver, coach."

KING DEAL ONGOING - HODGSON

Roy Hodgson says he isn't aware of any complications with Marlon King's £5million move to Fulham.
The Cottagers boss says the situation is "ongoing" despite reports on Saturday of a failed medical for the Watford striker.
After Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Arsenal, Hodgson said: "It is an ongoing situation and everyone is still talking about it - the clubs and the agents, the player.
"We just hope that the matter will be resolved in the coming days and we hope it will be."
Hodgson, who is also in negotiations with Korean forward Cho Jae Jin, insisted: "I am not aware of anything other than it being an ongoing situation and the clubs discussing the matter."
Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd echoed Hodgson's comment.
After the Hornets' 1-1 draw with Charlton, he said: "I don't want to sound like a politician but the situation with Marlon is ongoing.
"The player wanted to go and the deal was agreed and as far as I know it is still going to go through but we are in a grey area at the moment.
"The one person who wants it resolved more than anyone else is Marlon King. He's been a great servant for us but I hope for everyone's sake that it goes through.
"Both clubs had a game today but we will pick it up in the next few days. It was my decision to sell him and part of winning at Watford is good governance.
"We are not Manchester United and if the right money comes in then you have to make a decision."

Charlton secure services of Burnley striker
Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Burnley striker Andy Gray for an initial fee of £1.5million.
The Addicks agreed a fee with The Clarets for the 30-year-old's services on Friday after having their opening bid rejected earlier this week.
Gray had 11 Championship goals for Burnley this season including a brace in their 3-1 win at The Valley back in December.
Charlton have landed Gray on an emergency loan meaning he is available for their clash with Watford on Saturday evening ahead of making it a permanent deal next week.
"I'm delighted to be at Charlton and it's great news that everything has gone through in time for Saturday's game," he told the club's official website.
"I'm at the stage of my career where the chance to go to a club that had been in the Premier League for a long time, and has a great chance of getting back there, couldn't be ignored.
"Everyone wants to play in the Premier League, it's where I want to play, and hopefully I can help the club get there."

'I want people to give me a chance'

So, Lee Bowyer, how do you think you are regarded by the average football fan? 'I think they think I'm a bad person,' he says. 'For some reason or another, some people seem to think that I'm this animal.'
He says it very matter-of-factly, which is surprising given that the midfielder has been so vilified during a combustible career and that the assessment of his reputation may be justified.
Bowyer may still be having to bear the fallout from his indiscretions and the opprobrium heaped on him but he is now more mature, wiser, calmer - and surprisingly at ease with himself.
'I'm probably one of the happiest players in the league at the moment,' Bowyer asserts. 'I can honestly say this is by far the happiest I've ever been in my whole career, on and off the field. I think I'm back home, I'm with my family.'
The West Ham family. Atonement has been a word in the news and is rather apt in the case of the 31-year-old Londoner. The foundation for the many perceptions of him was set when he was sent on an FA rehabilitation programme for a failed cannabis test as a 17-year-old at Charlton; then, shortly after signing for Leeds in July 1996, he was fined £4,500 for affray after an alleged racial incident in McDonald's on London's Isle of Dogs.
But the defining moment, to the general football public at large, came on the night of 12 January 2000 when he had been among a group of people some of whom would viciously assault British-Asian student Sarfraz Najeib. Along with team-mate Jonathan Woodgate, he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray.
After two trials spanning nearly two years - the first was abandoned when a newspaper prejudiced the case by publishing an interview with Najeib's father who insisted the alleged assault was racist - Bowyer was cleared of both counts, while Woodgate was convicted of affray and sentenced to community service.
It is worth repeating that Bowyer was and remains innocent because there have been many times when the opposite scenario has seemed to be the case. Few footballers have had their characters assassinated so clinically as Bowyer.
'The things that people still mention are eight, 11 and 13 years ago. I'd like people to see me for what I am now,' he pleads. 'I've made mistakes and I've never hidden them. I can't turn back time, I've had to learn from those mistakes, but now I just want people to give me a chance.'
Bowyer is sitting in an ante-room at a charity fund-raiser for the Bobby Moore Fund, where he is making an appearance as part of the Premier League's Creating Chances scheme. Large posters of the former West Ham icon's smiling face beam out across the venue.
While Bowyer claims to be happy, in the mildest of tones, other emotions do at times show through, including a slow-burning anger at the realisation that he will never be viewed for the person he is now. 'I'm a family person and no one sees that. All they want to know is what bad stuff you've done. I go to work, I work hard and then I go home and I'll be with my missus or with my family. People still class you as the person that's done something even though you're not guilty. Are people going to have a different perception of me? I don't think they will, I think it's beyond repair.'
His biggest vice these days is fishing. But there must be regrets? 'I don't think I represented my country as much as I should have,' he says. He knows his off-the-field problems were the root cause, with the demonisation of him by certain sections of the media making things worse. When Sven-Göran Eriksson did give him his one and only England cap, in a friendly against Portugal in September 2002, the media were quick to remind the English public of his 'crimes'. If anything still eats at Bowyer it is this.
'I was getting judged for something that I was no part of and that's what dented my chances of representing England. There have been players in the past who have represented their country, who have had off-the-field problems and been captain. So why can others represent their country when they've had problems and I couldn't?' he asks.
His other regret is that he remains without a medal to show for his career. 'In my eyes that's unacceptable,' he says. His best chance of a medal was probably with Leeds. 'We had a good enough side that was also exciting and should have won something.'
Bowyer's decline seemed to match that of Leeds following the 2001 European Cup semi-final defeat to Valencia. He left Elland Road for his first spell at West Ham in January 2003 and ended up relegated. 'That was a mistake,' he says. 'I let my heart rule my head. I wasn't fit, so really I probably did no one any favours.'
An unremarkable three-year stint at Newcastle followed. It is best remembered for another unsavoury incident, a scuffle with team-mate Kieron Dyer in April 2005. In addition to a seven-game ban, he was fined £258,000 by his club and the FA before the Crown Prosecution Service took an interest. By the time the case was settled, and Bowyer paid a £600 fine and £1,000 costs, he had returned to London, West Ham and his family.
After feeling he had let down himself - and everyone else - the first time at Upton Park, he returned not only to prove everyone wrong but to exorcise some demons. But when he ended up in another relegation scrap with the club he supported as a boy and with his confidence undermined by years of negativity, he was, unsurprisingly, consumed by self doubt.
'I've come here twice and it was like we might get relegated twice, so I thought I was a Jonah. I thought, "What am I doing here? Everything's going against me". I just had this feeling like I'm not supposed to be here.'
That thought has not crossed his mind this season, although on the opening day against Manchester City he agrees he had probably the worst game of his career. 'I just put myself under too much pressure,' he says. 'But it was one game and there were 37 more to go. I still had plenty of time to prove myself. I like to think I'm doing that. I've now scored goals for the club I love and things are going right.'
The horizon is brighter for his club too. 'I think we can still challenge for Europe. We've stayed in touch, although we need luck to happen with players coming back from injury. If we had a run like we did at the end of last season then we'll be up there. Our club has gone from rock bottom, but now we're in the top half and we're moving in the right direction.'
From rock bottom to moving in the right direction: just like Lee Bowyer.

Robbie Keane joins the legends after 100th goal
In the Tottenham dressing room I pinned up a motto: “The Team is the Star”. If any player sums up that philosophy, it’s Robbie Keane. Normally it’s not the best combination to have a striker as your skipper. Robbie is different. He’ll do any job a manager asks and seeks togetherness with teammates socially as well as on the pitch. Character-wise, if you had 11 Robbie Keanes on your side, you’d have a chance of winning any game.

Wise words fail to put Sullivan's Doncaster off stride

Neil Sullivan

NEIL SULLIVAN insists the only opinion that counts is that of Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll after making a triumphant first return to former club Leeds United.
The former Scotland international left Elland Road on a free transfer during the summer after being told by United boss Dennis Wise he was no longer good enough to play for the club.
Wise then made that opinion public during the build-up to Doncaster's first visit to Leeds in more than half a century to give the Yorkshire derby additional intrigue. Sullivan could, therefore, have been forgiven for gloating in the aftermath of a 1-0 win for Rovers that did not do justice to the manner in which O'Driscoll's side dominated.
However, after keeping a fourth clean sheet in six games, the
37-year-old said: "Someone mentioned what was said but that is life. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I feel great and fit. I am enjoying my football and am at a great football club who are really well run.
"What managers from other clubs think of me is neither here nor there, it is what Sean O'Driscoll thinks that is important. If he is happy and is silly enough to put me in his team, then his is the opinion that counts.
"I have another year on my contract so I have at least another one (year to play). I enjoy my football. The moment you dread going into work, that is when you call it a day. And I don't feel like that. If I enjoy it and the manager is happy and my team-mates are happy, then I carry on.
"It was nice to go back to Elland Road and I appreciated the reception (from the fans). The crowd have always been great to me and this is the first time I have come back to play one of my old clubs. It is still only three points."
Sullivan, who will be 38 next month, had little to do as Rovers leapfrogged over his old club into fourth place in League One courtesy of a 21st-minute free-kick by Brian Stock.
He added: "We are on a good run and not many teams will come to Elland Road and win. Leeds have got themselves in a position where it is a straight race (for promotion). You cannot under-estimate what they have done to get over the 15-point deduction. Ideally, we can both go up but my main concern is Donny Rovers."

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder has confirmed that winger Darren Huckerby will see a specialist this week in a bid to cure his nagging hip problem.
Huckerby was left out of the squad to face Leicester at the weekend - fuelling speculation that the out-of-favour winger is set to leave the club - but Roeder insists his fitness is the problem.

Hird stays on with Mariners
Grimsby manager Alan Buckley was delighted to hear that Doncaster have agreed to extend defender Sam Hird's loan spell for a third month.
The 20-year-old was first loaned out to the Mariners on November 20 and stayed on for another month from December 19.
The Doncaster-born full-back, released by Leeds in the summer, has been a regular for Alan Buckley's League Two side, making 12 appearances.

Sammy in swoop as McStay leaves Joyce

Morecambe have snapped up defender Henry McStay from Royal Antwerp.
The 22-year-old former Leeds United defender was released by the Belgian club, managed by former Preston North End midfielder Warren Joyce.
Shrimps boss Sammy McIlroy said: "He was due to arrive from Belgium today and we'll see what develops.
"He is a super little player who can play either centre-half or full-back, and he could be a good addition to the squad.
"The lad got a bit homesick out there and Warren Joyce, who I worked with at Stockport County, recommended him to me."
McStay was one of the stars as Ireland lifted the Youth Olympic tournament in 2001 and made his Republic of Ireland Under-21s debut against Portugal three years later.
"He has a decent pedigree, and I've heard a lot of good reports about the boy," added McIlroy.
