AFC Bournemouth - Fitness First Stadium (Dean Court)

Leeds United's most recent clash at Dean Court is vividly remembered by both those who made the long trip to the south coast and the locals.

Capacity: 10,700
Record Attendance: 9,359 v Brentford in May 2006.
Distance from Elland Road: 260 miles
Year ground opened: 1910 (pitched rotated 90 degrees in 2001)
United's last visit: May 5, 1990

A 1-0 victory at Dean Court, completed by Lee Chapman's goal, secured United's return to the top flight as league champions on the final day of the Division Two season, a hugely significant achievement for the Elland Road club and for then manager Howard Wilkinson.
But the fixture was marred by the mayhem that persisted in the town throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, one which residents find difficult to forget.
Sustained violence led to more than 100 arrests and the disorder caused damage costing in the region of £40,000.
Twelve police officers were left with serious injuries by the time supporters began drifting away from Bournemouth at the end of a long and fraught weekend.
The memories of the violence are such that AFC Bournemouth have written to the Football League, appealing to make United's visit to the Fitness First Stadium next season a midweek game, so limiting the number of fans who make the 260-mile journey south.
The request came within 48 hours of United's final game of last term against Derby County and Superintendent Stuart Katon, of Dorset Police, was quoted as saying: "Every team in the division is going to be looking at the Leeds fixture and anticipating problems with fans."
The prospect of such a cool welcome in Bournemouth may put certain supporters off what is the third longest trip facing Leeds next season, behind those to Yeovil and Swansea.
But those who do travel will find that Bournemouth's home has changed beyond recognition since plans to regenerate the ground were implemented in 2001.
The club's pitch was rotated by 90 degrees and their old terraces were demolished to make way for an all-seater arena with three stands and a capacity of 10,700.
The area to the south of the ground remains open, although the club have constructed a temporary stand there in recent seasons and plan to build a permanent fixture in the near future.
Away fans are usually seated in one area of the East Stand, with an allocation of between 1,500 and 2,000 tickets and the stadium has long been a non-smoking venue.
Two large car parks are situated around the ground, while Bournemouth Central train station is a half-hour walk.

Kamp 3/11:

Bristol Rovers v Bournemouth
Bristol Rovers have fitness doubts over strikers Rickie Lambert (illness) and Andy Williams (pelvis), but Ryan Green (illness) and loan signing Danny Coles are in contention to feature.

Bournemouth boss Kevin Bond is without Adam Lallana, while defender Shaun Cooper is struggling with a dead leg.

Sweet memories.....

The Bournemouth Riot

Leeds United head back to AFC Bournemouth tomorrow for their first visit to the town since the infamous riot on the May Day bank holiday weekend of 1990. Leeds fans had travelled to the south-coast club in huge numbers in anticipation of a celebration of promotion back to Division 1 after an 8 year exile.
The game at Dean Court will always be remembered for Chris Kamara's right wing cross headed home by Lee Chapman, which confirmed Leeds promotion as Champions, and relegated the Cherries.
However, off the pitch a total of 104 arrests were made as 12 police officers were injured in disturbances throughout the weekend. With recent skirmishes breaking out amongst fans against both Millwall and Carlisle the club and supporters alike will be hoping that tomorrow nights game passes of peacefully, with United getting back to winning ways.

This is Football, Not War

AFC Bournemouth  Leeds United
Dean Court
Tuesday 6th November 2007
7.45pm

The Cherries host fallen giants Leeds United on Tuesday after finally winning once again at Bristol Rovers on Saturday. Two goals from debutant loan signing James Henry gave AFCB the three points and lifted them to the edge of the relegation zone. However, the side will now have to break their bad home form curse to keep the winning run alive.
Leeds visit for the first time since the trouble in 1990, (hopefully, there will be no violence tomorrow) where they have regularly been in the top division, even reaching the Champions League semi-finals. However, failure to control their funds has led to the decline into League 1. But, they came back from a 15 point deficit at the start of the season to go on a 13 game unbeaten run, finally ended by Carlisle on Saturday. The northern side coming back from a goal down to turn the game in the second half. Dennis Wise will be hoping his team bounce back from this first setback that has now put them into 9th position, as they strive to bounce right back up.

Vital Quotes:
Kevin Bond was obviously delighted with the weekend`s win:
'In the situation we're in, any win is a good win but I thought it was a good win. The lads performed really well and we deserved it."
Midfielder and captain, Darren Anderton, had the following thoughts:
'…it's only one performance and will be no good to us unless we can follow it up in the coming weeks, which is something we haven't been able to do this season. We can say we've been unlucky or whatever, but the truth of the matter is that we are where we are and we've got to put it right.'
Very true, but will it be put into reality tomorrow?

Leeds boss, Dennis Wise, said the following after Saturday`s defeat:
"We`ve done fantastic so far, now we have to kick on again."
With midfielder, Andrew Hughes, giving a rather frank and determined response to the game:
"We let ourselves down… we have a game Tuesday and can`t get there quick enough… I wouldn`t want to be anywhere else"
Hard-hitting and determined words that make you feel possibly their defeat could really hit AFCB dangerously if they are not awake and alert from the start.

AFC Bournemouth Team News:
James Henry and Alex Pearce are both expected to start again after arriving last Friday from Reading and performing admirably on Saturday. Whilst Jo Kuffour came off on Saturday and will hope any knock he suffered clears up in time. Shaun Cooper will have hoped to have recovered from his dead leg, along with Adam Lallana. Neil Young will be absent, as will Max Gradel. The injury list still contains Garry, Perrett, Foley, Bartley, and Cummings.

Player to watch: Neil Moss
Even at Bristol Rovers on Saturday he rivalled James Henry for Man of the Match with some fantastic saves. Been assured since his return to the sticks and will have to be on top of his game once more, as the rampant Leeds attack will try to break through. Hopefully, his superb shot-stopping will be of use, and at its best.

Leeds United Team News:
Leeds are currently missing many big name players. Alan Thompson, Tore Andre Flo, and Radostin Kishishev, are all on the treatment table and were joined by Ian Westlake last week. Shaun Derry is severely lacking match practice and is unlikely to be in the squad. However, the good news for Leeds is that Leon Constantine came off the bench on Saturday for his first appearance since his ankle injury.

Player to watch: Jermaine Beckford
Having just won the PFA Coca Cole League One Fans Player of the Month award for October, the young former non-league striker will be confident to carry on his flying goalscoring start to the season. He added goal number 8 on Saturday and his partnership with former Cherry, Tresor Kandol is the most lethal and feared in the division.

Restoring the Pride in Super Leeds

After an unsettling fortnight on and off the pitch both players and fans will need to play their part in restoring some of the pride which has been dented recently. On the playing side Dennis Wise will be looking for a big response from his charges after they tasted defeat in the league for the first time in 14 games at Carlisle on Saturday. It's the first real test of United's mettle against a Bournemouth side buzzing after moving off the bottom of the table with a win at Bristol Rovers.
More importantly though is the response of the Leeds supporters travelling to Bournemouth tomorrow. It's 17 years since our last 'infamous' visit to the seaside town and a good opportunity to make amends. After the ugly scenes at Elland Road where Millwall fans kicked through bus windows in order to goad Leeds supporters into a response, a small minority of United 'fans' were involved in trouble at Carlisle, 13 of them being arrested.
Bournemouth Chief Executive Laurence Jones held out the olive branch in a goodwill gesture ahead of the match. 'We are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the north to Bournemouth. It's going to be a full house and we have worked very closely with Dorset Police for some time now to ensure everybody enjoys the experience,' he said. 'The overwhelming majority of supporters want to see a game. If a minority don't, provisions are in place for them to be dealt with.'
All decent-minded United fans will be hoping for good news on and off the pitch.

Extra police ready for arrival of Leeds

EXTRA police have been drafted into Bournemouth ahead of the Cherries' League One clash with Leeds United on Tuesday night.
The sides meet for the first time since Leeds fans rampaged through Bournemouth 17 years ago, in what became the worst riots ever witnessed in the town.
Police and football officials have worked together for months ahead of the 9,300 sell-out game, which is expected to attract 2,500 away fans to Dean Court.
Although police refused to discuss operational specifics ahead of the game, Chief Supt Bob Boulton assured the Daily Echo additional officers will maintain a presence at the ground and in key areas around town.
Yesterday he said: "We have got a police operation running throughout the next two days.
"We are expecting fans to come into Bournemouth to make use of our facilities so we will have an enhanced presence.
"This is an intelligence-led operation and we are aware of past history. Our emphasis is to get people to the ground for the game and enable them to leave safely."
A handful of supporters from the Yorkshire club made headlines for all the wrong reasons at the weekend.
On Saturday 13 Leeds fans and eight Carlisle supporters were arrested in Carlisle city centre. Police made the arrests as trouble sparked before and after that league encounter.
After their last home game against Millwall mounted police made repeated charges into Leeds supporters, who were waiting outside Elland Road to confront the away fans.
The Londoners, who arrived at the ground on buses, had kicked out their windows to goad Leeds supporters before the game.
Cherries' chief executive Laurence Jones said: "We are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the north to Bournemouth.
"It is going to be a full house and we have worked very closely with Dorset Police for some time now to ensure everybody enjoys the experience.
"The overwhelming majority of supporters want to see a game. If a minority don't, provisions are in place for them to be dealt with."
Earlier this year Dorset Police hailed the midweek scheduling of the Yorkshire side's visit as a victory for common sense.
Mr Jones said: "We want this to be a positive experience for everybody. We have looked at all aspects of stadium security and have things covered from all angles.
"One thing I would ask is for supporters to make their way to the stadium early in order to make the kick-off."

Wise unlikely to tinker with side

Leeds boss Dennis Wise is not expected to make any changes to his starting line-up for the long trip to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
Leeds' unbeaten start to the season was ended by Carlisle on Saturday, but manager Wise, who has no new injury or suspension problems, is unlikely to tinker with his side.
Loan signing Radostin Kishishev is struggling with a muscle tear and will miss a third game since returning to Elland Road and fellow midfielder Alan Thompson is still nursing a calf problem.
Defender Paul Huntington, winger Filipe Da Costa and striker Leon Constantine all pressed their claims for a place in the starting line-up after stepping off the bench at Carlisle.
Former Port Vale forward Constantine made his first senior appearance for Leeds after recovering from a broken ankle.

Underdogs against the fallen giants but no fear from Bond

BOSS Kevin Bond insists Cherries will respect Leeds United - but not fear them.
Cherries host the fallen giants in front of a sell-out Dean Court crowd tonight (7.45pm kick-off).
And previewing the clash, Bond said: "We are massive underdogs but it's a game to look forward to. Hopefully, we'll have a full house, which would be great for a league game, and it would be nice to be able to do ourselves justice if we can.
"I don't want to over-play the game.
"We're a quarter of the way through the season and it's a home game where we want to pick up some points if we can.
"It's a game I really want to win and to do well in. But given what they've got and the start they've had, there's no doubt that it's going to be a mightily difficult game for us.
"We'll go out and do the very best we can, like we did on Saturday, and see where it takes us.
"We know we need to respect them but we can't be playing with any fear.
"We know the dangers and threats that they pose but this isn't just a one-team show. We need to go out there and play our part as well."
Cherries will be bidding to break their home duck this season, while Leeds will be looking to bounce back after losing for the first time at Carlisle on Saturday.
Dennis Wise's side quickly overcame a 15-point deduction imposed at the start of the season for financial reasons and have dropped just seven points in 14 league games.
Wise said: "You hope the run is going to go on for ever but it's come to an end.
"But full credit to the lads because they've been fantastic up until now. Now we've got to kick on.
"We've got an important game against Bournemouth and we need a (positive) result.
"It's a fantastic achievement by the players but now we've got to go on another run. When you get beaten, you want a game straight away. The Carlisle defeat hurt us all.
"You don't want to be waiting a week for a game, you want to get the horrible feeling out the way as quickly as possible. It's going to be a difficult game against Bournemouth.
"It's important that we're professional at Bournemouth and the group of lads I've got are capable of going there and winning the game."
Wise is expected to name an unchanged side, while Bond is sweating on the fitness of midfielder Danny Hollands (ankle), although Shaun Cooper and Adam Lallana could return to the squad.

Cherries: (from) Moss, Telfer, Gowling, A Pearce, J Pearce, Henry, Karacan, Anderton, Hollands, Kuffour, Bradbury, Vokes, Pitman, Cooper, Lallana, Franks, Partington, Stewart.
Leeds United: (from) Ankergren, Richardson, Marques, Heath, Clapham, Prutton, Douglas, Hughes, Carole, Beckford, Kandol, Huntington, Constantine, Da Costa, Weston, Lucas.

Wise looking for the right kind of reaction from players

Bournemouth v Leeds United
League one

Leeds manager Dennis Wise has stressed the importance of bouncing back against Bournemouth tonight after the club's unbeaten league record was ended by Carlisle United
Leeds are still only three points off the League One play-off zone after starting the season with a 15-point penalty imposed by the Football League.
Wise said: "We have lost one game in 14 and now we have to start performing again straight away. We want a result as soon as we can – we don't want to go too long. It's an important game at Bournemouth," he added. " We know it will be difficult but we'll dust ourselves down and off we go again. We've got some important games coming up, some where we'll get results and some where we won't. It's about how we react to this setback."
Midfielder Andrew Hughes has urged his team-mates to show what they are made of and show their true spirit on the south coast tonight.
"What we've done at this club over the last few months is very good, and we're proud of it," he said. "We're all gutted by the defeat and we'll beat ourselves up. If you don't do that when you lose games then there's something seriously wrong. We're not happy. But the best thing is we've got a game.
"We're going there for a hell of a battle. They're fighting for their lives and we have to get a result."
Wise is taking encouragement from the way his side have bounced back with wins after draws against Gillingham and Leyton Orient this season.
With the exception of long-term injury victim Tore Andre Flo, Wise has a fully-fit squad at his disposal. Striker Leon Constantine is pushing for a first start after making his debut as a substitute against Carlisle.
Leeds have not been back to Bournemouth since winning promotion to the top-flight on a day of ugly scenes outside the ground 17 years ago.

Bournemouth have yet to win at home this season.
Last time: Bournemouth 0 Leeds 1; Second Division; May 5 1990.

Leeds United Versus Bournemouth

Club History
AFC Bournemouth traces it’s routes back to the 1890’s under local clubs, Boscombe St.Johns Institute Football Club and later Boscombe F.C., who competed in the Bournemouth and District Junior league. It was Boscombe F.C. who employed the first professional player for the club commanding a sky-high fee of £10.
“Bournemouth” was not included in the title of the club until 1923 when a meeting declared that Boscombe F.C. was to become 'Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic Football Club,' a name that not only was the longest ever to hit English football, but was to stick until 1971 when the modern day AFC Bournemouth persona was adopted.
The first silverware that made it’s way to Bournemouth however was under the old name as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic picked up the Third Division (South) cup, defeating Walsall at current home of Roman Abramovich's overpaid, over hyped stars, Stamford Bridge, post-war.
The name change to AFC Bournemouth also brought about a slump in form, as heroes Ted MacDougall started an exodus from the club, leaving it relegation bound in 1975 to the fourth division where the club stayed for a considerable period of time.
It was Bournemouth where one Harry Redknapp started his reputation as a manager that knew a bargain when he saw one. It was Redknapp’s ‘wheeler-dealer’ style that saw the club strengthen to become Division 3 Champions in 1987, and continued to challenge the higher echelons of league football until the club was relegated again in 1990.
The 90’s saw Harry Redknapp “retire,” though as we all know he soon popped up in the football world once again, now in charge of Premiership retirement home Portsmouth. Harry’s replacement was to be Tony Pulis, who had left the club by the 94-95 season with Bournemouth in serious financial trouble.
Bournemouth saw administration come in 1997 following a number of seasons suffering some mediocre performances. It was the administration of the club that prompted the first ever community owned club in Europe, and the next season saw The Cherries just miss out on the playoffs and reach a Wembley final in the Auto Windscreens Shield (now the Johnston’s Paint Trophy.)
The new millennium saw a new start for Bournemouth as the club redeveloped it’s stadium, temporarily moving to Dorchester’s Avenue Stadium whilst their pitch was turned through 90 degrees and the stands redeveloped. Relegation then followed as a disappointing end to the first few weeks in the Fitness First Stadium. Bournemouth returned to League One following a 5-2 thumping of Lincoln City at the Millennium Stadium, the club now holding the record for most goals scored in one game at Cardiff’s’ new home of football (and rugby!)
AFC Bournemouth survived last season courtesy of a 1-1 draw against Gillingham in the last home game of the season and will now face Leeds in the 2007/08 League One season.
So far this season however it is has been a poor season yet again for the Cherries, notching up just 3 wins so far though having defeated Bristol Rovers on Saturday, will be high on confidence as Leeds United visit on Tuesday evening. It is the first time that Leeds have visited Bournemouth since May 1990, where mindless thugs, apparently branded as “supporters” rioted over an entire weekend, causing considerable damage estimated to have cost £1million to put right.

Notable Squad Members
At the end of last season, continuing financial issues left the club with just 9 first team players, however Bournemouth have since strengthened with the addition of Brentford front-man Jo Kuffor with the player rejecting the likes of Swindon, Bristol and Preston in order to move to The Fitness First Stadium.
Naturally, the biggest name in the AFC Bournemouth squad list (like Leeds, what’s left of it) has to be former England International Darren Anderton. “Sicknote” joined The Cherries in 2006 following his release from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a “pay-as-you-play” basis and looks set to continue being an inspiration for the club in the coming season.
Another geriatric member of their squad is Paul Telfer. The Scottish International (well he played once) has actually come out of retirement to play for Bournemouth this season and is their vice-captain.

The Town Of Bournemouth
Bournemouth is the largest town in the mighty county that is “ceremonially speaking” Dorset, although historically speaking it is in Hampshire. Originally the area around “Bourne Mouth” was a landing ground for smugglers bringing in their tobacco, spirits and most horrifically…tea!
When not watching Bournemouth, Leeds United fans can go off and visit the Russell-Cotes Museum, which is located near to the Pavilion Theatre. The museum contains many a 19th century artwork and family collections from their worldwide travel. Alternatively you can head for the night scene, with many a nightclub ditching the town’s reputation of being “God’s waiting room.”

Did you know?
1.) Bournemouth’s airport is home to the central college that trains the United Kingdom’s Air Traffic Controllers.
2.) There are no motorways in the entire county of Dorset.
3.) “Bournemouth University,” is not actually in Bournemouth, but in Poole, which is now also home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Wise: I expect a big show

Dennis Wise will order his Leeds United players to ignore tired legs and bruised pride when he sends them out to face Bournemouth tonight.
United's squad have had little more than 72 hours to draw breath after their first league defeat of the season, inflicted by Carlisle United on Saturday, but the rapid arrival of a fixture 280 miles south of Yorkshire has come as a relief to Wise.
As he assessed the damage of a 3-1 loss at Brunton Park – the one blemish on United's league record – Wise insisted the sole blessing of the defeat was its timing.
The 40-year-old has demanded a reaction at Dean Court this evening and will look for his players to prove that their unbeaten league run which stretched for 13 games was not a freak occurrence.
Leeds can return to the brink of League One's play-off positions tonight, and Bournemouth's home record is the least intimidating in the division.
Kevin Bond's side have taken two points from seven games at Dean Court this season and are yet to win a single fixture, the worst start to a campaign they have endured since their election to the Football League in 1923.
A difficult game on the south coast may also allow United to banish Saturday's defeat before it has had time to sink in.
Wise said: "When you get beat you want a game straight away. It's so important.
"We need to start performing because the defeat at Carlisle hurt all of us. I want to get a result as soon as we can, and I don't want this to go for too long.
"It's an important game against Bournemouth, and it's going to be a difficult one. But we had setbacks against Gillingham and Leyton Orient, and we bounced back.
"It's important that we're professional at Bournemouth, and the group of lads I've got are capable of going there and winning the game.
"We'll pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and do what we've been doing for the last 13 games."
United's reliable form prior to their loss at Brunton Park was such that Wise may have no inclination to alter his line-up this evening.
His injury list may also prevent him from doing so – Alan Thompson, Radostin Kishishev and Ian Westlake are unlikely to be involved against Bournemouth after missing the trip to Cumbria.

AFC Bournemouth - Leeds United
The Fitness First Stadium
06/11/2007
1945 GMT

Having lost a league fixture for the first time this season in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Carlisle. Dennis Wise's men look to bounce back against AFC Bournemouth this evening.

Vital Quotes:
Leeds United boss Dennis Wise has kept his head firmly screwed on as his side went 13 games unbeaten. Following defeat, Wise has continued the sensible approach in his pre-match interviews.
Speaking to leedsunited.com he said: 'Carlisle stopped us in our tracks, now it's up to us to go on another run.'
'We want a result as soon as we can, we don't want to go too long. It's Important we are professional at Bournemouth. The lads are well capable.
'When you get beat you want a game straight away. I said after the Carlisle game 'we've done fantastic, but we've made mistakes today and it's cost us'. We've lost one in 14, now we have to start performing again straight away.'
The Leeds boss is no stranger to his Bournemouth counterpart Kevin Bond either, and knows that the former Newcastle United assistant will have his side all fired up for The Whites trip to Dorset: 'I know Kevin Bond well and he likes to play football, they'll try and pass it,' Wise added in his interview.
'It'll be interesting to see how they go about it. They like to play five in midfield and one in front. They might change that on Tuesday, but it'll be interesting how they line-up at home.'
Midfielder Andy Hughes echoed the sentiments about requiring another match soon after defeat, impatiently waiting for this evening to come to get back to winning ways: 'It's going to be massive, they're struggling near the bottom, but maybe they're in a false position. We need to get a result.
'We've got a big week now, we've got Bournemouth then the FA Cup. First, it's Bournemouth away on Tuesday night and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
'We've got to grind away and go at it again.'
*****
Meanwhile, over in the Bournemouth camp, manager Kevin Bond believes that his side will respect the 'fallen giants' but they are not afraid of the League One powerhouses:
'We are massive underdogs but it's a game to look forward to. Hopefully, we'll have a full house, which would be great for a league game, and it would be nice to be able to do ourselves justice if we can.'
'We know we need to respect them but we can't be playing with any fear.'

AFC Bournemouth Team News:
Vital Bournemouth are expecting loan signings James Henry and Alex Pearce to feature in the game having impressed during Bournemouth's victory over Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
Jo Kuffor has suffered a knock and may be a doubt for the game.
The Bournemouth official site have announced that there will be an unchanged squad for the match.

Player to watch: Darren Anderton
He's old, he's slow, he gets injured a lot.
However Darren Anderton can still quite happily pull the strings at this level, and will definitely be the one that the defence and midfield need to look out for.

Leeds United Team News:
Leeds United are unlikely to make any changes from the squad that lost away to Carlisle at the weekend.
Kishishev, Thompson and Flo are all long-term injury problems, however Leeds have welcomed back Leon Constantine to add some much needed cover for the front two.

Player to watch: Casper Ankergren
admittedly I only saw the (atrocious) highlights served up by Virgin Media this week, and I felt that Ankergren was perhaps at fault for 2/3 goals.
Casper can quite easily do better than that, an improvement needs to be made else he will be a ghost of his former self.

Match Facts & Stats
In a rare move away from the useless facts, Vital Leeds is to provide some more useful facts for one week only!
* AFC Bournemouth haven't beaten Leeds United in all 7 of their league and cup fixtures.
* Bournemouth have been dismal in front of a home ground, picking up just 2 points from 7 games.
* It's also not the best place to see home goals, with The Cherries scoring just 4 times.
* Darren Anderton has played for 5 clubs in a career spanning 17 years.
* The tallest living woman (as listed in the Guinness Book of Records) is Sandy Allen who lives in the U.S.A. Sandy was was last measured to be 2 m 31.7 cm (7 ft 7.25 in).
There had to be one useless fact, sorry!

Ref Watch:
Leeds United have yet again been graced by the presence of a Premiership referee for this match.
Unfortunately however, it happens to be Steve Bennett.
Mr Bennett is well and truley in the Christmas spirit early, managing 48 yellow, and 6 red cards in his 14 fixtures so far this season.
Funnily enough, the last time he was in charge of a Leeds match, he sent someone off! Brad Jones, on loan from Middlesborough was dismissed as a David Healy penalty sealed all 3 points for Leeds in a 1-0 victory away to Sheffield Wednesday.
Match Prediction:
Leeds will bounce back (lets face it, they have to) tonight with a resounding 3-0 victory. Kandol & Beckford to share the goals.
