Blackwell signs Blades extension
(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45267000/jpg/_45267830_-1.jpg)
Blackwell has previously had spells as manager of Leeds and Luton
Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Bramall Lane until 2012.
Blackwell, 49, was appointed Blades boss in February following the departure of Bryan Robson.
He previously had a spell as number two to Neil Warnock before leaving to take up a coaching role at Leeds in 2003 - where he later became manager.
"This is a pleasant surprise and I feel honoured to be here," Blackwell said.
" I think this shows that the chairman wants stability and believes in the job I'm trying to do.
"It could take us a few years to achieve what we want to but I'm pleased the board have faith in me to be able to do it," Blackwell added.
Blades director Terry Robinson said: "Kevin is a breath of fresh air to the club. He has a plan which he has put in place and the club is going to grow.
"We know he is going to achieve the goal we are all aiming for and he has the full backing of the Sheffield United board and plc."

Colchester have handed a trial to former Leicester and Leeds defender Alan Maybury.
The 30-year-old ex-Republic of Ireland international has been training with the Us following a trial with Bristol City, and is in line to appear in this week's Essex Senior Cup tie against Romford at the Community Stadium.
Maybury is currently without a club after his release by Leicester in May, having had a spell on loan with Aberdeen towards the end of last season.

Where are they now?
Swan: I did it my way
(http://editorial.jpress.co.uk/web/Upload/LEED//TH1_612200821pppPeter%20Swan%200054.jpg)
PETER SWAN may not have tasted the glory years at Elland Road under Howard Wilkinson but without him, Sergeant Wilko's leading lieutenant may never have arrived â€" and history could have been so different.
The one thing that Leeds lad Swan â€" brought up on the tough streets of Hunslet â€" could never be accused of in his long and eventful career was being a shrinking violet.
Put simply, he called a spade a spade and always fought his corner. Just as he did in early 1989 when he was preparing to head out of the Elland Road exit to rejoin old mentor Eddie Gray at Hull City.
Leeds needed hard cash to bring in Gordon Strachan from Manchester United â€" and that meant selling the home-grown utility player.
After speaking to Hull, Swan â€" out of favour under Wilkinson â€" headed back to United with his future still in the air, but determined to leave on his terms. When he arrived, the flame-haired Scot was sitting in reception and Swan quickly put two and two together. With his bargaining hand bolstered, he thrashed out terms for his exit and the rest, as they say, is history.
Swan, who now works in the construction industry â€" as well as being a football pundit, told the YEP: "I spoke to Hull and came back to Leeds and Gordon Strachan was sat there. They needed the £200,000 from selling me to help pay for Gordon, so I was in a good bargaining position. I asked for an extra 10 grand and they ended up giving me it!
"I've no regrets at all about leaving. I still follow Leeds â€" I do all my old clubs, and like to see them all do well apart from Plymouth!
"Leeds did well and I was delighted for them.
"I'd heard a lot about Howard. I'd been injured, but there was a practice match which was an ideal opportunity to show what I could do.
"I did well and he said I'd got a chance. But I don't know why, I just said 'I don't want to play for you. I don't like you'. I needed to get out and I knew Eddie was interested at Hull."
Larger-than-life Swan's footballing odyssey is memorably captured in his fascinating autobiography Swanny â€" Confessions of a Lower League Legend. While hardly being a footballing maverick in the sense of one-time Whites crowd-pleasers Tony Currie and Frank Worthington, the powerhouse striker turned centre-half was never anything less than his own man.
And while it may have landed him in trouble with certain footballing folk, it made him a hell of a lot more friends in dressing rooms up and down the country where he was very much the main man.
While his career may have been provincial, taking in ports of call such as Hull, Plymouth, Bury, Burnley, Port Vale and York, it was certainly never dull.
It all started at Elland Road, where Swan aimed to take a leaf out of fellow Hunslet Parkside pupil and legendary Whites play-anywhere man Paul Madeley's book. Quite literally!
Swan said: "I remember picking up a school book one day and it had Paul Madeley's name on it. Unbelievable. Mine was a rugby school really and the likes of Kelvin Skerrett, Andy Bateman and Garry Schofield went there and not many top footballers came through, it was all rugby.
"But it was football for me.
Funnily enough, I supported West Ham as a kid â€" I think it was to do with their colours, I liked the kit! I also became a Trevor Brooking fan. Over his career of six or seven hundred games, he'd never been booked. When I played, I was booked every other game!
"But being from Leeds, you want to play for Leeds. It's always your ambition â€" the first thing you want to do is play for your home-town club.
"I played for Leeds City Boys. I went through from under-10s to under-15s with them and also played with Yorkshire Amateurs. It was a great upbringing.
"When I first went to United, there were some big-hitters there. But the side were on the downturn. Internationals such as Peter Barnes, Kenny Burns and Arthur Graham were there â€" I used to clean their boots.
"Allan Clarke was in charge. I didn't have much to do with him but Martin Wilkinson, his assistant, was a lovely bloke and always had the time of day for you.
"The next thing I knew, they had moved on and Eddie Gray and Jimmy Lumsden came in.
"In the space of three years, they ended up bringing the kids through such as Dennis Irwin, Scott Sellars and Tommy Wright. But they never really gave me the opportunity. Maybe Eddie just thought it wasn't the right time to put me in, whereas I was thinking 'it is, get me in'.
"My chance came when Billy came. You realise after how much Eddie thought of me because he ended up spending £200,000 on me at Hull. After that, he became my agent and took me down to Vale!
"Billy sold a lot of the youngsters. They were Eddie's breed coming through and when he took over, he wanted to do it his way and get his own boys in. But Billy was different class. A proper man's man. I remember he had a mate called Herbie and he let him do a team talk once and he had the players in tears.
"It was something different alright. Herbie used to love Billy to bits. He did this team talk and was in tears himself and spoke about how much he loved Leeds United and Bremner! I can't even remember what the result was..."
Swan tasted highs in his time with United, such as scoring twice against Stoke in his second game at Elland Road in February 1986, while hitting 11 goals in 1987-88, including a famous strike against Middlesbrough in front of a festive crowd of more than 34,000.
But the mid to late '80s were largely a case of "if only" for him and the team.
He added: "I scored in four straight games that season (1987-88) and was looking at Allan Clarke's record â€" and he was a proper legend. Bobby Davison ended up beating it after I think. But scoring goals at Elland Road for your home-town club â€" I don't think there's any better feeling, to be honest.
"We were so close to doing something back then. When I talk to the fans now, many still say they were the best years they ever had â€" even better than the European years.
They could see the players were fighting as much as the fans were fighting! It was like we were all in it together."
"I still did my own thing, though. Two weeks before we played in the FA Cup against Notts Forest once, I played for Rothwell Town. I know I could have got the sack for it, but I wanted to do it. I just had a crack with the lads there!"
Swan, whose playing days were ended by a debilitating knee injury in 2000, has carved out a successful second footballing career by virtue of a summarising role with Radio Humberside covering the Tigers and a twice-weekly newspaper column. And while he enjoys his football "sideline", it remains very much that â€" he hasn't fallen into the trap of legions of ex-pros who desperately try and maintain an involvement in the game after quitting.
Now 42, Wakefield-based Swan â€" whose son George is a member of Leeds United's Academy â€" said: "Jon Sheridan and Tommy Wright live around the corner and I keep in touch with them. I see Ian Snodin now and again and Brendan Ormsby. But I never go out of my way to keep in touch with ex-players â€" if they are there, they are there.
"I've kept that side of my life separate, I'd rather just play darts and dominoes with the local lads in the boozer. I prefer it that way, while some ex-footballers like to cling onto things.
"I look at David Batty, who was my room-mate. He's very similar to myself as he's kept his personal life away from the football side of it. He'd be more high-profile, so there's reason for him to do it.
"He's living on the east coast and getting on with his life, which is fantastic.
"When you finish playing, you are all over the shop. I fell into the media thing and bought a house where I had land. I did it up and paid the mortgage off â€" which is what you want to do when you finish playing.
"I then did another house up. All the money I've now got has been through the building work because all the money I earned playing, I spent and enjoyed!
"It's set me up for life now. I'm in the position where I'm okay.
"I've been doing the radio work for five years with Hull and had three promotions with them. I still feel part of it. I've got my coaching certificates and A licence. It's whether I'd want to throw away all I've done in the past five years for a job in management or coaching.
"If the right job came along, yes I'd do it. I'll never put my name forward, but I was at Port Vale the other day and some fans said they were desperate for me to take over there. I said 'you get a petition up and I'll come down and manage'!
"My time in football was a good laugh, but only because I made it that. I've always lived my life with a smile on my face. I've been married for 19 years and have put a smile on my missus' face every day.
"It's easy to get down. I had that many injuries, I could have hung myself.
Sometimes you don't want to smile in life, but you've got to get through it.
"At all my clubs, I've probably been the main instigator of the trouble, problems and fun. Speak to anybody around us and they've loved having me around."
SWANNY â€" Confessions of a Lower-League Legend with Andrew Collomosse, John Blake Publishing, is available on hardback priced £17.99.

But when former manager Steve Bruce tried to sign him in 2005 from Newcastle, objections were raised about Bowyer by Birmingham supporters who started an internet petition to persuade the club to boycott the deal because of his character.
Bowyer rejected Birmingham, despite another outcry from fans in favour of the deal, with club officials claiming the player was concerned for his personal safety due to the city’s large ethnic population.
But it is believed that he is now one of a number of players McLeish has targeted to strengthen the club’s push for promotion back to the Premier League.
And it is felt unlikely that the doubts that existed before would resurface.
"Over the past few years Bowyer has been a consummate professional," one source told the Daily Mail.
The player’s wages could be an issue but financially-troubled West Ham may be keen to do a deal.

Ex-White targets Club World Cup glory
Ex-Leeds United defender Danny Hay will more than likely miss out on locking horns with old foes Manchester United in this year's Club World Cup - and will have to settle for a spicy trans-Tasman encounter as a substitute.
Hay, captain of New Zealand part-timers Waitakere United, will lesd his men into battle against Adelaide United in the opening game of the competition tomorrow.
Sir Alex Ferguson's United jet into Japan next week, having been given a route straight through to the semi-final.
It would take a near miracle for Waitakere's collection of teachers, builders and salesmen to overcome Adelaide and Japan's Gamba Osaka in the quarter-finals to set up a dream date with United.
He said: "I played against Manchester United with Leeds. It was every young lad's dream.
"Those were the days of Roy Keane and David Beckham at his best. It was special."
"But the Adelaide game is a big one for us. It most definitely does give us extra motivation - New Zealand and Australia have always got a massive rivalry.
"We're like the little brothers. They're the big brother - you always want to get one over on the big brother, don't you?
"In every sport in New Zealand we always want to beat the Aussies. They're our major rivals first and foremost."

Harrogate strike deal for former Whites star Noel

Harrogate Town have pulled off a major coup by snapping up former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan until the end of the season.
Whelan, who was twice involved in £2m moves â€" to Coventry and Middlesbrough â€" has been without a club since leaving Scottish First Division side Dunfermline last season.
The 33-year-old Leeds-born player has been taking his coaching badges while overcoming an Achilles injury.
He signed for Harrogate yesterday â€" after his international clearance came through â€" along with former Huddersfield Town academy player Luke Malcher.
Chairman Bill Fotherby said: "I'm highly-delighted Noel has joined the club. When he gets back to full match fitness he will be a real force to be reckoned with.
"He has a presence and a skill and you can't lose that. He will be a real asset for us.
"And at 33, he still has a lot to offer football.
"He will be practising his coaching skills here, but hopefully he will also do a lot more playing than watching."
Both Whelan and Malcher, 21, will be in the Town squad for tomorrow's trip to Durham City in the first round of the FA Trophy.
They took part in training last night on Leeds United's third generation artificial pitch at Thorpe Arch ahead of the game at UniBond League First Division North outfit Durham which will be played on a similar surface.
Meanwhile, Town's Blue Square North rivals Farsley Celtic have nothing to fear at Conference leaders Burton Albion tomorrow â€" according to boss Neil Parsley.
Parsley said with Burton expected to win the FA Trophy first round tie, the pressure is off.
"It's a tough game, but it's a good one," said Parsley. "We are going to the best non-league team in the country at the minute and we can go there and play without fear.
"We are playing without expectations, except those I put on the players, and it is a fantastic game for the lads to go and express themselves and show just how good they are.
"We have nothing to lose because nobody expects us to win.
"The players can express themselves, just as they did at Altrincham in the Setanta Shield and last time out against Droylsden. We beat them 2-0 and we all know what they have done of late."
Dominic Krief's one-match suspension carries over into a third week for Celtic. Tom Penford, back from a hamstring injury, steps in.

Whatever Happened To Peter Reid’s Leeds Loanees?
Roque Junior â€" A World Cup winner in 2002, Roque Junior arrived at Elland Road from AC Milan and endured little short of a nightmare in his brief stay with the club (from which he has never really recovered). The Brazilian defender’s stint at Leeds began with a 4:0 drubbing at Leicester City and he was sent-off in his home debut against Birmingham City in a 2:0 defeat. His remaining appearances in a Leeds shirt were a 2:2 Carling Cup draw at home to Swindon Town, a 4:0 Premiership defeat at Everton, a 3:2 defeat at home to Manchester United in the Carling Cup (in which he did at least score both Leeds goals), a 4:1 loss at home to Arsenal and, finally, a 6:1 drubbing at Portsmouth. Roque Junior spent the second half of the season back in Italy, on loan to Siena. At the season’s end he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, but made just 33 Bundesliga appearances in three seasons. He moved to Duisburg at the start of this season but, having started just four games to date, the 31-year-old has now agreed to join Qatar’s Al-Rayyan for a final pay-day.

Walton Punished for Stupidity
(http://images.rivals.net/08/07/460x238/QPR-Simon-Walton-Cardiff_994571.jpg)
It looks like Simon Walton will be getting more than just a few days off this Christmas, with Paul Sturrock deciding to transfer list the former Leeds man after his red card at Oakwell on Saturday.
Walton was seen to throw a kick at Anderson de Silva after the Brazilian had won a perfectly good tackle in the first half on Saturday. What the Argyle record signing was thinking is a mystery to all, as it was in right in front of the nose of referee Dean Whitestone and he wasted no time in producing a straight red card.
Plymouth boss Sturrock thought that Walton's stupidity had cost his side the game and couldn't hide his frustration in an interview with his club's Official Website:
"I have had a discussion with Simon today and I have made it very plain to him how disappointed I was about the whole scenario.
"I had emphasised it to him, after watching video evidence from the last couple of games where there were certain incidents that could have turned into what happened on Saturday.
"He took no heed of that and, after careful consideration, I have decided to put him on the transfer list, and I have fined him two weeks' wages.
"There were several incidences in several games where he has been very close to tempting [the referee]. After taking the time to show him bits and pieces, and reiterate my thoughts on it, for it not to happen, I cannot accept.
"He has let all the players down, which is more important than anything else and I feel this is an appropriate course of action."
It's not the first time Walton has shown an aggressive side at Oakwell and many fans weren't surprised when they realized who in fact had been giving his marching orders on Saturday. In various instances over the years he's been seen to lunge in and after showing early promise at Leeds as a youngster, it looks as though his career is frittering away down the pan.
However, that being said the decision undoubtedly helped us. Although the team have come in for some criticism for not killing the game off earlier under the circumstances, a win is a win and a 2-0 victory is nothing to be sniffed at for a team like us. I suppose we should be thanking Mr Walton, who made our job much, much easier.
Noe for oss?

Plymouth's Walton put up for sale
Plymouth midfielder Simon Walton has been put on the transfer list and fined two-weeks wages after his red card in the 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on Saturday.
Walton, 21, was sent off for kicking out at Anderson Da Silva after a foul.
"I do feel that it's only appropriate. He's let down his fellow players as well which is a big disappointment to me," Sturrock told BBC Spotlight.

UEFA gaffe has Real Madrid accelerating Liverpool talks for Pennant
Real Madrid are intensifying their pursuit of Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.
The Mail on Sunday says Pennant has moved back to the top of Real Madrid's wanted list of wingers because the Spanish club appear to have blundered by signing players ineligible for the Champions League.
Clubs are only allowed to add three players to their Champions League squad mid-season and only one of those can have played in the UEFA Cup.
Both Lassana Diarra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have played in the UEFA Cup this term but, while Pennant was listed in Liverpool's Champions League squad, he has not played in the competition and so is eligible, making him favourite to secure an extraordinary move.

Where are they now: Imre Varadi
(http://editorial.jpress.co.uk/web/Upload/LEED//TH1_31200950e4-0301-32-0201-143316.jpg)
For someone who was nothing other than a ball of energy in his playing days, the frenetic world of the transfer window is just taylor-made for Imre Varadi.
The one-time Whites striker's 'second' footballing career is equally as cut and thrust as his first, when the London-born forward endeared himself to a host of clubs up 'north' from Leeds to Everton and Newcastle to Sheffield Wednesday with his sheer graft and appetite for the game.
A players' agent since 2000, the mobile phone line of Sheffield-based Varadi, now 49, will be white-hot for the next four weeks during the scrum that is the January transfer window, while his car will also be clocking the miles on the UK motorway network.
The carbon 'footprint' of Varadi â€" whose father was Hungarian and his mother Italian â€" will also extend to Europe as he attempts to broker deals for clients across the continent before the window closes for business on January 31. So don't expect him to come up for air this month.
On his agency work, Varadi â€" who played at Elland Road under footballing mentor Howard Wilkinson from February 1990 to March 1993 â€" said: "I absolutely love it, on a day to day basis. Obviously the transfer window is now open and I'm talking to managers every day, players and coaches and am totally involved in football seven days a week, which is fantastic.
"I work for a company called Stellar Group Ltd, based in London and I travel all over Europe now and we've got a lot of famous clients â€" I don't really want to say who they are, but they are Premiership players, put it that way!
"I'm always up at Leeds, I've got players I look after there and I deal with the club regarding contracts and what not.
"We've got players at every football club in the UK, so you can imagine how busy it is at this time of year!"
Varadi's ports of call in his playing career were frequent, with his odyssey encompassing 13 professional clubs, after starting out his footballing life in the backwaters of Letchworth Garden City.
Varadi â€" whose first stopping off point was Bramall Lane â€" gave distinguished service to all and while his stint with the Whites was brief in terms of games played, it was memorable nevertheless.
And Elland Road was very much a home from home for Varadi, with former Sheffield Wednesday team-mates Mel Sterland, Carl Shutt, Lee Chapman, John Pearson and Glynn Snodin part of a sizeable Owls 'mafia' in West Yorkshire when he arrived â€" with his former Hillsborough chief Howard Wilkinson piloting operations.
Injuries to Bobby Davison and Shutt prompted Wilkinson to sign Varadi for a third time in the winter of 1990, with Leeds pitted in an intense battle for automatic promotion with Newcastle and Sheffield United, two of Varadi's former clubs.
Varadi helped keep the wheels of the promotion bandwagon fully intact with some valuable cameos, doing enough to earn himself a Championship medal in the process.
In total, the much-travelled frontman â€" then into his 30s â€" featured just 29 times in three seasons at Elland Road, but fully enjoyed the gloss applied to his career at United, the last 'major' club he represented before drifting into the lower and non-leagues.
For his part, Varadi was just glad that Wilkinson came calling again to bring him the short hop up the M1, with his old boss having left Sheffield Wednesday for Leeds shortly after re-signing him in the autumn of 1988.
On heading to Leeds, at the age of 30, Varadi said: "It was a bit of a surprise. When I went from Manchester City to Sheffield Wednesday for the second time, Howard brought me back and I'd heard all the rumours about him going to Leeds and he said "I'm not going to Leeds, no way!" and that they are just rumours.
"Within seven days of signing, Howard had gone to Leeds! But luckily I ended up joining him there and he hadn't forgotten about me.
"Howard was always a mentor to me and I still speak to him a lot and he's a great guy. I don't think he's been given the credit by the pundits that he deserved during his career and especially at Leeds where he won two championships and was the last Englishman to win the first division.
"Some see him as dour, but not among all the ex-Leeds players and many others.
"Deep down, he's a really funny guy â€" maybe to media folk, he's just not a great personally on camera. But behind all that, he's a terrific guy who is good company, really bright and a great coach and man-manager.
"He created a fantastic dressing room at Leeds. We worked hard and certainly played hard and there was a fantastic team spirit.
"We had some truly great players such as Gordon Strachan and there was a real togetherness and some real characters like Eric Cantona and Vinnie (Jones).
"Howard did sell Vinnie after we went up, which was a bit of a surprise. But he got what he wanted from Vinnie and having got promotion, went for the likes of Gary McAllister who had that little bit of quality.
"I still keep in touch with all the old Leeds lads and many were there at Mel Sterland's book launch dinner about six weeks ago. Chris Fairclough and Chris Whyte were there, along with Jon Newsome and Mickey Thomas came along and we all see each other on the circuit.
"My time at Leeds was fantastic, to be honest. It was a great time at the club and I've some fond memories. I won a second division championship medal.
"I'm big mates with Mel and we used to travel up every day to Leeds together and had lots of fun with a talented squad.
"There were some good young players such as Batty and Speed and in the year we went up, we had the likes of Bobby Davison, Lee Chapman and Mel.
"I joined in the February of the promotion year in the old second division and things just snowballed. Unfortunately, I did pick up a few injuries and I was also going through a divorce, but still when I look back now, we had some great times.
"I remember playing five or six games when Gordon Strachan got injured and despite not playing that much, I was always in the squad and travelled up and down the country and there were always thousands of Leeds fans following us. We were winning week-in, week-out and you couldn't do anything but really enjoy it.
"There were lots of memorable times. Obviously, there was the Bournemouth game when we clinched promotion.
"There was lots of trouble down there which was a shame. But there were nearly all highs during my time at Leeds.
"After Leeds, I had a few good years at Rotherham and then went into the non-league and was player-manager at Matlock Town and assistant to Mel at Stalybridge before starting my 'second' footballing career."
He added: "I just hope Leeds can get back to where they belong. I was actually with Simon (Grayson) when he was at Leeds and he was a good, steady, honest player. I don't recall him playing a lot of games, but remember the day he went to Leicester and he made a good career for himself, both playing-wise and after.
"I hope he does well. I know Leeds want to strengthen their defence and Gary McAllister wanted to do that when this window opened, but unfortunately didn't get there."
Loved by supporters wherever he went, Varadi's ultimate claim to fame perhaps lies in creating a terrace 'monster', namely the inflatable craze in the late 1980s â€" helping to put the fun back into the game when hooliganism and Heysel were still deep scars on the soccer landscape.
So while he may not go down in the annals of footballing greats â€" the name of Imre Varadi will forever be etched into footballing folklore.
Varadi said: "I remember running out at Manchester City and someone threw a banana and just called me 'Imre Banana! It didn't even rhyme with my name and had nothing to do what was down my trousers!
"The inflatable craze just swept the country and there was a banana craze. After that, it was hammers for West Ham fans and canaries for Norwich fans.
"I actually went onto the 'I Love the 70s, 80s and 90s' programme aired on BBC2 (last year) about the banana craze and I still see the odd one at grounds. It's nice to be remembered!"

Skulle ønske de begge var blitt så voksne at de såg hvem som skapte formuen deres, og ville gi litt tilbake. På hhv L1 lønn denne våren og ccc lønn neste sesong. Greedy bastards

Everton in loan talks for Newcastle striker Smith
Everton are moving for Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.
The Sun says Smith was lined up for a summer move to Goodison before a row blew up over his future that began the end of Kevin Keegan’s reign at St James’ Park.
Smith, 28, was injured soon after the transfer window closed and is still on the comeback trail after ankle surgery.
But Everton chief David Moyes is poised to swoop to solve a striker crisis, with Louis Saha crocked and Yakubu out for the season.

Gavin Rothery på flyttefot igjen.
In addition, City Manager Martin Foyle has decided to release midfielder Gavin Rothery with immediate effect. Rothery will continue to train with City in the short term but his contract will not be renewed and he will be allowed to leave as soon as he can find a new club in the January transfer window. Martin Foyle explained that he was disappointed not to have been able to see Rothery play more games but wants to extend the loan deal of midfielder Adam Smith as well as pursuing other possible signings in January.

Rothery moves on to Harrogate
MORLEY'S former Leeds United player
Gavin Rothery has joined Blue Square North League side Harrogate Town after being released by York City.
The attacking midfielder made his debut for his new club on New Year’s Day, but could not prevent them suffering a 1-0 defeat in their local derby at Farsley Celtic.
Rothery, 21, now hopes to keep his place in the side to make his home debut this Saturday when Town, managed by former Leeds United favourite Neil Aspin, take on Burscough.
The former England under 19 international had been hoping to make a go of it at York City, but was released last month after spending two months with the club.
He had been signed by Colin Walker, but following his sacking as manager, the new York boss, Martin Foyle, had a different opinion about a player who came through the Leeds academy only to be hit by injuries at a crucial time in his development.
The former Morley High school pupil made the bench for the first team at Elland Road during Kevin Blackwell’s time as manager, but was frozen out by Dennis Wise and moved on. Following trial spells at Cheltenham and Rotherham, he signed for the Minstermen in October after impressing for the reserves.
His new manager, Aspin, said: “I’d seen him play in the reserves a couple of weeks ago so I knew he could do a job.
“He'd only met the players once but he did really well (against Farsley Celtic). I think it’s an opportunity for him and it’s up to him to take it.â€
McIlroy, Geddis emerge as Cork contenders
Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy and former Newcastle United and Leeds United coach David Geddis have emerged as candidates for the vacant manager’s position at League of Ireland side Cork City.
City owner Tom Coughlan is seeking to fill the role following the decision to sack Setanta Sports Cup-winning boss Alan Mathews last month.
Former Ireland boss Brian Kerr was linked with the job during the Christmas period but Geddis and McIlroy now look to head the queue for the Turners Cross hotseat.
Geddis, 50, played with Ipswich Town and Aston Villa in the 1970s and ‘80s before turning his attention to coaching, going on to hold backroom roles at Newcastle and Leeds.
McIlroy, meanwhile, rose to prominence as a member of the Manchester United side of the 1970s and won 88 senior caps for Northern Ireland.
He went on to manage the North for a three-year spell before a short stint at Stockport County.
The 54-year-old was appointed boss of Morecambe three years ago and led the Shrimps to the Football League for the first time in their history in 2007.

Liverpool ponder £10million Spurs swoop
Liverpool Football Club remain keen on Aaron Lennon.
Rafael Benitez has always been a big admirer of the former Leeds United winger, who has rediscovered his form for Tottenham Hotspur this season.
The Reds were linked with a move for the player during the summer transfer window, and now fresh reports claim an offer of £10million could be on the cards for the England international.
Benitez has said he will not be making any huge additions to his squad during the winter transfer window, but he is sure to move for Lennon should he receive any encouragement.

£250,000 bid for Carlisle striker turned down - reports
CARLISLE United are reported to have turned down a £250,000 offer from Huddersfield Town for striker Danny Graham.
The hitman, who has netted 13 times already this campaign, is said to have caught the eye of new Town boss Lee Clark in the Cumbrian's 3-0 defeat on Boxing Day.
It is understood Huddersfield Town are the only club so far to have reportedly moved for the striker but local rivals Barnsley, Preston and Swansea are rumoured to have Gateshead-born Graham on their radar.
Carlisle chairman David Allen today confirmed there had been interest in the 23-year-old â€" who has fired 37 goals in 92 appearances for the Cumbrians â€" but would not disclose the clubs involved.
Preston, Barnsley, Swansea and Dundee United are also reported to be interested in signing the player.

Gus Poyet: I was never offered Leeds job
Since working at Tottenham as Juande Ramos’ assistant, Gus Poyet has been eager to get back to work, waiting for the right offer to come his way and looking for an opportunity to prove himself as a manager or head coach.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder has a sharp footballing mind and, according to those who have worked with him, he reads the game exceptionally well. It came as no surprise, therefore, when he was recently considered the favourite to take over the vacant managerial role at Leeds United after Gary McAllister was dismissed by the Elland Road club just before Christmas.
However, with Poyet openly declaring his desire to pursue a managerial career in England, many were shocked when the Uruguayan did not take up the role at Leeds and there was a fair amount of speculation that he had turned down the opportunity to take charge of the club where he previously worked as assistant to Dennis Wise...
“That is not true,†said Gus when I discussed the matter with him and, in the following interview, Poyet makes his position clear, emphasising his desire to work as a manager ‘at the right club, with the best people.’
Poyet: I have heard the rumours saying that I turned down the manager’s job at Leeds United. Above all I would like the opportunity to deny these stories because, aside from not being true, they might confuse people regarding my actual situation at the moment.
Guillem: Did you ever discuss the position with anyone at Leeds?
Poyet: From the minute my name started being linked with the Leeds job; I was expecting a call from Ken Bates that sadly never arrived. I know there were a lot of people who took it for granted that, at the very least, I was going to get a phone call: whether it was to offer me the job or even to tell me that I hadn’t been chosen. I was ready to go, but it is clear that they weren’t interested in me.
Guillem: So the reports at the time, stating that you were the favourite to take over are wide of the mark?
Poyet: I just want to make it absolutely clear that Leeds never offered me the manager’s job, nor did they ever ask me if I was interested in it. On the other hand, I would like it to be known that I was ready to accept the challenge of managing Leeds, if the opportunity had been offered to me.
Guillem: So what is next for Gus Poyet? You have ambitions to get back in to coaching as soon as possible don’t you â€" maybe even as a manager?
Poyet: My position at the moment is that I am waiting for the right challenge to present itself: as a head coach or manager of a club. I have spent two and a half years working as a number two; I have seen the manager’s job up close and I have learned from every situation that I have faced as an assistant: I’ve been working in close contact with players, studying their reactions, how they adapt and respond to change. On a tactical and strategic level, I’ve been working with two very different coaches like Dennis Wise and Juande Ramos and I am ready to get started as a manager.
Guillem: Do you have a preference as to where that might be?
Poyet: Where, how and who? That is up for discussion; a question of sitting down with the Chairman of any club that is interested, formulating a project that is in the best interests of the club and, of course, is right for me as well. It is not about how big the club is, or what division they are playing in; it is about the right club, having the best people leading the club, with a solid, realistic project. After that, the rest is down to me: it will be my responsibility to carry out that project and do the very best for the club in question.

Smith fury over Boro swap deal
ALAN SMITH hit out as Newcastle agreed to swap him for Middlesbrough striker Mido.
A source said: “Alan’s really angry about this. He has been working hard to regain his fitness and wants to do well â€" at Newcastle.â€
Smith, a £6million signing from Manchester United 18 months ago, was never informed the clubs were in talks and found out only last night â€" but he has no intention of quitting St James’ Park.
Newcastle are now threatening that Smith will never play for the club again if he does not accept the move.
Smith, 28, sees the attempt to flog him behind his back as a massive slap in the face after spending three months working furiously to get fit following an ankle ligament operation.
The source added: “He is back in training and should be ready for selection by the end of the month.
“He does not want to go anywhere else.â€

Time away from home ends after 20 years
(http://editorial.jpress.co.uk/web/Upload/YPOS//TH1_91200955howard%20wilkinson.JPG)
HOWARD WILKINSON enjoyed a passionate love affair with Leeds United but, in truth, was always married to Sheffield Wednesday.
Today, 20 years after he deserted the Owls, Wilkinson is back at his spiritual home.
The tracksuit and trainers will stay in the wardrobe this time around; Wilkinson's role is purely white collar. His services are not going to cost the club a penny, either, which says everything you need to know.
As football advisor to the new board, Wilkinson will offer help and expertise to those re-shaping the club's future. At the age of 65, this man has been around the block long enough to spot when things are missing.
Wilkinson, who grew up in Netherthorpe, played 22 times for the Owls in the early Sixties and returned as manager in June 1983 as a replacement for Jack Charlton.
During five years at the helm, he restored the club's top-flight status, after a 14-year absence, reached five cup quarter-finals, and one semi-final.
Had it not been for Heysel and the subsequent ban on English clubs, Wilkinson's men would have played in Europe.
When he stepped down a division to join Leeds in 1988, it was mainly through frustration at his club's lack of ambition. Ironically, his departure sparked a change of attitude in the boardroom which led to big spending under Ron Atkinson and Trevor Francis.
Wilkinson was never one to criticise his own directors. As for those who criticised his methods? They simply failed to grasp the importance of getting the best out of limited resources.
There were no complaints from fans when the Owls sat third in the table and beating Liverpool and Manchester United on their own patch.
Equally, at Leeds, there was nothing but pride from those who watched "Sergeant Wilko" guide Leeds from the lower end of the old Second Division to the top of the pile. Even now, 17 years on, Wilkinson holds the distinction of being the last English manager to lift the domestic title
In an interview with the Yorkshire Post at the start of the season, Wilkinson predicted that the Owls would continue to struggle as long as instability existed at boardroom level.
Although he returns at a time when boardroom changes have taken place, Wilkinson will be hoping that stability starts now.

Coaching career is on the menu for WhelanNoel Whelan failed to make the headlines in the last chapter of his professional playing career â€" indeed, arguably his most noted performance of recent years came on Celebrity Masterchef.
Now the ex-Leeds United ace is back in football at Harrogate Town but it's ultimately in coaching that he hopes to cook up a treat.
Whelan has not played a professional game since July 2006 when he tore his Achilles tendon playing for Dunfermline against Hearts in the Scottish Premier League. Following frustrating spells at Livingston and Boston United, the injury was the final straw for Whelan who in his glory days starred up front for Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Coventry City.
Some two-and-a-half years later, Whelan is back in the game at chairman Bill Fotherby's Harrogate, though the 34-year-old faces a battle to regain his fitness and is yet to make an appearance.
However, during his spell in the wilderness, Whelan has been concentrating on his coaching badges ahead of an anticipated new chapter in his footballing career.
"I'd moved back to Leeds having retired about a year-and-a-half ago from playing football," explained Whelan.
"I'd just gained my UEFA B Licence to be a coach and manager so basically I was looking to do more coaching than playing as obviously if I could still play at a decent level I would still be playing now.
"This opportunity (at Harrogate) came up and hopefully I can do a bit of coaching and a bit of playing at the same time.
"Basically, I miss playing, as I think most ex-professional footballers probably do, and it's something I wanted to keep involved with. As soon as I finished playing football I didn't want it to be out of my life â€" it's the only thing I really know.
"I'm just looking to build my fitness up now and get back into the swing of the football, but obviously the coaching side is really more important than the playing side."
A Whelan of yesteryear would be quite an acquisition for Blue Square North side Town â€" the striker signed as a trainee at Leeds and went on to make 58 appearances between 1993 and 1995.
He was then snapped up for £2m by Coventry City and 39 goals in 155 games followed over a four-and-a-half-year period before a £2.2m move to Middlesbrough in August 2000.
Whelan made 73 appearances at the Riverside before eventually moving to Crystal Palace in May 2003, spells at Millwall, Derby, Aberdeen, Boston, Livingston and Dunfermline following as his career gradually slid somewhat.
Whelan is under no illusions that he is no longer the player of old.
It was during his time at Boston that Whelan was admitted to the Sporting Chance clinic in early January 2006, for the treatment of an alcohol problem.
"I've signed a contract which is not for any money, it's just basically to get myself fit and see what happens," said the Leeds-born footballer of his move to Harrogate.
"Bill (Fotherby) is wanting me to play more, which is fine. I don't mind playing but from my side I am looking for something different now.
"I've got my coaching badge and I feel I have got a lot to offer on the coaching side of things.
I have played under different England managers in my time as a player and I've had 10 years in the Premiership with 300-odd games.
"Bill said he wants me down there which is fine, but then my long-term aim is to get in a Football League club.
"From there I want to learn from the ground upwards with the youth side and then eventually I can move up.
"I'm still young as I am only 34 and I want to do the coaching thing right. It's important to learn your job from the ground upwards, learning all the way."
Whelan now plans to take his UEFA Pro Licence which takes around 18 months to complete.
On the playing side, he has always been about goals and should he gain the necessary match sharpness, he admits it would be great to start a few games and hit the net for Harrogate Town.
It's been so long since his last goal, memories of scoring are starting to fade!
"It's been a long time and I'm not sure what that feeling is like anymore!" joked Whelan. "Hopefully, once I get myself back into the swing of things I can bag a couple and help them stay at the top end of the table.
"Obviously, after not playing for so long my fitness has gone. I've kind of come to the end of that journey myself if I am honest and now is the time for me to learn about the coaching side of things.
"I've got experience of the good things and the bad things and hopefully that can be a help to kids coming through."
Whelan's move has put him back in the limelight â€" the non-league limelight at least â€" but culinary fans will have noted his surprise appearance on last year's series of Celebrity Masterchef. That is bound to generate a bit of banter with Neil Aspin's troops at the CNG Stadium â€" but Whelan is glad he gave it a go.
"I got a phone call, as I've got a media agent in London who gets me a few bits and pieces," explained Whelan. "I did a bit of Nuts TV and things like that, on their football show with Jason Cundy.
"They asked me if I fancied doing Celebrity Masterchef and I said yeah, I thought it would be a great experience and it was. It's something that does not come around very often for a lot of people, to try something different, so I went ahead and did it."
Sadly, Whelan's rainbow trout with new potatoes didn't wash with judges John Torode and Greg Wallace, Whelan and DJ Spoony sent packing as Wendi Peters â€" Coronation Street's Cilla Battersby â€" went through.
"It wasn't one of my finest performances!" laughed Whelan. "But seeing how other people adapted from their jobs and the pressure they put themselves through was quite interesting, especially when we were in the restaurant with the chefs.
"It was a pressurising situation, something that I had been used to on the field and it was a very good experience.
"I'm far from a master chef but when you have lived by yourself, you can't always get takeaways and you have to do certain fish dishes.
You have to eat as well as you possibly can so I did do a bit in the kitchen â€" but when it got to the final I was pretty glad I wasn't there!
"I was with DJ Spoony and Wendi Peters and I went for a rainbow trout with new potatoes and a salsa, and a stilton and broccoli soup, but Wendi has been cooking for about 20 years for her children. I've not got that much experience in the bag!
"Me and DJ Spoony were just ready to walk out at the beginning, we were thinking 'what are we doing?'."
At least Whelan was having fun â€" something that cannot really be said for the latter part of his footballing career, especially in Scotland. The former Elland Road favourite admits his final years in the professional ranks and subsequent departure from football following left him feeling low.
"I was up in Dunfermline at the time. I was in the middle of retirement when I got a phone call from (manager) Jim Leishman asking me to play for them as a favour that season," he recalled.
"It was a week before the start of the season so they gave me an all-in-one pre-season within a week!
"They put me in against Hearts and I think it was the first minute I went up for a header and I landed and tore my Achilles tendon. That kind of just summed the idea up for me really, that my body was not really able to cope with the demands of football these days.
"When that happened I just decided to do my B Licence and now I can use that and do my Pro Licence along the way as well which takes quite a bit longer.
"It's been quite hard for me. When you have to pack in through injury you get to a stage where you don't know what to do. Since I left school, football has always been there and when, all of a sudden, it is taken away from you, you miss it. You miss that banter in the morning with the boys, you miss the socialising and the training.
"It has been hard to adjust, but you get a lot of people who finish playing and they say that's it.
"For me, coaching was always something in the back of the mind that I wanted to do and I think I could become quite good at it.
"I've experienced the good side of football and the bad side. It happens to a lot of players, but it's important players know these things if they are going to make it as a professional."
The first stages of a burgeoning coaching career could now be developing at Harrogate as Whelan aims to bounce back from a disappointing end to his time in the professional ranks.
However, the would-be coach knows he is blessed to have enjoyed a lucrative and successful playing career â€" his undoubted highlight the times when he pulled on the white jersey of hometown club Leeds, and in particular winning the FA Youth Cup at Elland Road.
Whelan knows he must now take his coaching career one step at a time but he admits a dream scenario would be one day fulfilling such a role at United.
"I could have played one game for Leeds United and finished, lived my dream and been very happy," he said.
"All I wanted to do was to play for Leeds United and be a professional footballer so when I actually did pull the white shirt on it meant the world to me and my family. For me, that time playing for my hometown club was just like a dream come true.
"Hopefully, and as a Leeds boy, it would be nice to one day return to Leeds.
"I couldn't finish my career there and it won't be as a player, but it would be nice to go back as a coach and help out in any possible way that I can."

Coaching career is on the menu for Whelan
Noel Whelan failed to make the headlines in the last chapter of his professional playing career â€" indeed, arguably his most noted performance of recent years came on Celebrity Masterchef.

Bakke under kniven

Miller to leave Sunderland for QPR
QPR are hoping to sign of Republic of Ireland midfielder Liam Miller from Sunderland in the next 48 hours.
The 27 year old was transfer-listed last year after repeatedly turning up late for training.
The Championship outfit made enquiries after Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni spoke highly of Miller during a recent visit to Loftus Road.

Tottenham Hotspur are among the Barclays Premier League clubs to have expressed interest in Olivier Dacourt. The midfield player is available on a free transfer from Inter Milan, but at 34, he would likely be a short-term solution to Tottenham's requirement for a combative player. Dacourt played for Everton ten years ago and spent three years at Leeds United.
Ex-Leeds tyro courted by Redknapp Former Everton and Leeds United midfielder Olivier Dacourt could be set for a sensational return to the Premier League after Harry Redknapp met the player’s representatives in Milan with a view to acquiring his services.
The former French international who is currently under contract at the San Siro with reigning Serie A champions Internazionale is thought to be keen on the deal having featured only once since Jose Mourinho took over at the club.
Speaking to French publication L’Equipe Dacourt confirmed that offers were on the table:
“I have set a deadline regarding my future. I have plenty of contacts everywhere, in Italy, England, Spain, but I prefer to wait for the moment.
“My kids go to school in Milan; as a consequence I’m not going to do whatever. I have plenty of options, too much in fact, and you have pros and cons at every club.â€
At 34-years-old Dacourt has a wealth of experience and could bring solidity to a Spurs midfield which has appeared to lack grit and determination when the going gets tough. It is possible that the player could shun White Hart Lane off the back of telling advice from best friend and Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira
