Is It Miller Time Once Again For Leeds?
Sunderland midfielder Liam Miller has been told he is free to find another club 18 months after his arrival on Wearside, prompting speculation that he could once again be handed a temporary home at Elland Road.
Miller to leave Sunderland for QPR
QPR are hoping to sign of Republic of Ireland midfielder Liam Miller from Sunderland in the next 48 hours.
The 27 year old was transfer-listed last year after repeatedly turning up late for training.
The Championship outfit made enquiries after Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni spoke highly of Miller during a recent visit to Loftus Road.

Liverpool legend Fowler on way for Nth Queensland Fury talks
North Queensland boss Ian Ferguson is chasing former Liverpool and Leeds striker Robbie Fowler.
Fowler, the former Liverpool striker who scored 120 goals in 236 matches for the Reds, will fly to Queensland later this month to meet Fury coach Ian Ferguson.
"He has agreed to catch up in Townsville for a few days and obviously we will be talking about football," Ferguson said.
"We're looking for a marquee player and Robbie easily fits that position in any A-League football club.
"His record speaks for itself. He's a pure goal scorer who would lift the profile of football in this country to a new level if he decided to play in the A-League."
Fowler, 33, was recently released by Blackburn Rovers after a change of manager. Former boss Paul Ince was convinced Fowler could make an impact at Premiership level after a good season at Cardiff City last term.

North Queensland target Fowler linked with America’s MLS
Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler has been linked with Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire.
At a time where rumours are circulating non-stop in world football, it seems that the Fire have had discussions with Fowler but technical director Frank Klopas says that no deal will be done.
Reports have suggested that the Fire offered Fowler a contract but Klopas denied those rumours.
"We haven't offered Robbie Fowler a contract," Klopas told the Chicago Daily Herald.
“We haven't talked with his agent in a really long time."
This leaves the door open for North Queensland to continue talks with the former England star who no longer has a contract with English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers.

Where are they now?
John Faulkner: Revie was key for me

For a man who lectures on high performance leadership at a university, it's fitting that John Faulkner started his first 'professional' career at the best football club in the land in 1970.
The defender, who made a dramatic switch from Isthmian League minnows Sutton to league champions Leeds United that March, may not exactly be a household name to Whites followers.
And while he may have only donned the first-team jersey of United a handful of times in his two-year stint in West Yorkshire, the impact of rubbing shoulders on a day to day basis with some of the biggest sporting figures in the UK â€" was never lost upon the aspiring centre-half.
Just over a decade ago, Kent-born Faulkner â€" now 60 â€" made a career switch from the world of sport to business and ultimately tutoring at Bedfordshire-based Cranfield University after successful stints as a coach and assistant manager at first Luton and then Norwich.
Having helped pioneer a leading management programme, Faulkner still regularly lectures at Cranfield, where he is a visiting fellow â€" applying his experiences in sport to a wholly different arena.
Within his remit is empowering people and making them a company's most important asset â€" a philosophy Faulkner's first professional manager Don Revie followed to the letter throughout his golden tenure at Elland Road.
The Revie era was a time when his players were treated like kings, with their every need batered for by the club.
The respect for the manager and his staff was all-embracing from his troops, whose payback came via a slavish devotion to the cause and a host of on-field glories â€" Revie's ultimate compliment.
And while Faulkner may have a been peripheral figure in the early 70s, the education wasn't lost on him.
Faulkner told the YEP: "I did take a lot from Revie. His teams practiced in training like it was a Saturday and that's not always the way in football.
"Revie was a man for detail and had some fantastic people around him and players and I learnt so much about what standards are.
"He was into nutrition and placed importance in what we ate, although there was a drinking culture back then.
"All the players had massages on a Thursday, which was ahead of its time. Revie also had his famous dossiers on opponents and it was a great education."
Leaving nothing to chance was taken as read with meticulous Revie and his support staff and while the fourth-round FA Cup tie which pitted mighty Leeds with Faulkner's Sutton proved a walkover â€" United winning 6-0 â€" it would be folly to even think that the legendary Whites boss would treat any opponent lightly.
Respect was given and while the Sutton crop who booked a cup date with Leeds in January 1970 featured a motley collection including a schoolmaster, a jig borer, a cable jointer, engineers and a panel beater, Revie still had the Surrey outfit watched three times more than he did Ujpest Dozsa â€" who knocked United out of the Fairs Cup in 1968-69!
Leeds â€" who came to Gander Green Lane riding high in the league and having booked a place in the last eight of the European Cup â€" proved a class apart en route to a final appearance against Chelsea.
But the lasting impression made by rookie Faulkner â€" despite his side suffering a buffeting â€" wasn't lost on Revie.
He snapped him up weeks later, with Faulkner managing a couple of cameos in the 1969-70 season when Leeds agonisingly missed out on glory on three fronts.
Playing-wise, that was pretty much as good as it got for Faulkner, who scored an own goal on his home debut and copped a serious injury in his second game for his sins.
But despite suffering wretched luck, the stopper still recalls with fondness his time at a genuine footballing giant.
Faulkner said: "I had a fabulous time at Leeds, even though I picked up a really bad injury."
On his path north, he continued: "I first played at Charlton as a kid and came out and started work like a normal person, as a quantity surveyor.
"I was training for that and playing football at Sutton. I actually changed position, I was a forward but went back to centre-half.
"I was only at Sutton for a year. But we had a great year and obviously played Leeds. They got through on the Saturday and our game was cancelled. We played (Hillingdon Borough in the third round) the following Wednesday and drew away from home. The fourth-round draw was already made and we had a replay and won.
"They came down and watched the replay. I was playing quite well at the time and Maurice Lindley, Syd Owen and Revie were there, so they'd seen us all before the actual game. Don didn't take any chances.
"Despite the result, I played reasonably well, marking Mick Jones. Allan Clarke got four and Peter Lorimer got two.
"Within a week, Revie phoned me up. I was only 20 and said they wanted to sign me.
"Arsenal had also jumped on the bandwagon and there were a few clubs after me. But I met Revie and he was top class and I signed.
"It was a fantastic club, full of characters.
"Leeds were chasing a cup and league double and I got to play a few games at the end of the season. Everton ended up pulling away from Leeds, but we reached the cup final and I played against Burnley just before that.
"It was a memorable game because Eddie Gray scored two unbelievable goals and he became quite famous for both of them.
"He dribbled around about eight players for one goal and for the other â€" I read his book and he reckons he lobbed it in from 40 yards.
I just thought: 'bloody hell, what a magician!'
"There was obviously the cup final and replay and I played in the league game against Manchester City before the second final game.
"But I fractured my knee cap and it took me about 10 months to get over it.
"I did get back and played a couple of European games. Revie was brilliant and I idolised Norman Hunter, although I never told him that.
"For me, it was just fantastic to be involved. But I got to about 22 or 23 and I wanted to play first-team football, but it was difficult with 13 internationals playing there.
"There were also some great players in the reserves, Joe Jordan came six months after me and turned into a fantastic player and coach. Terry Yorath was also around at the time, along with David Harvey, as Sprake was still first choice.
"I transferred to Luton on transfer deadline day (in 1972). Revie had offered me a contract and said 'stay with us', but I wanted to play."
A total of 250 games at Luton followed â€" with the Hatters enjoying a season in the old first division in 1974-75.
Skipper at Kenilworth Road, Faulkner joined the Anglo footballing stampede to the US in the late 70s where he teamed up with Eddie McCreadie at Memphis Rogues and then California Surf before returning home with his coaching career soon blossoming.
He added: "I came back to England in 1981. I hadn't sold my house, which was still in Luton and David Pleat asked me to be a coach. I wanted to get into the coaching side and liked working with people.
"Luton got in the top division and with the plastic pitch, had a really successful few years and I was youth team coach.
"We got to a couple of cup semi-finals and won the League Cup final and finished sixth one year and they were good times.
"After David went to Tottenham, I ended up as first-team coach (at Luton). A new chairman later came in, I got the sack, as did Jim Ryan, who was manager.
"He went off to Manchester United and I went off to Norwich as first the reserve and then first-team coach.
"Norwich had a very good first team and Mike Walker took over and the club had that really good cup run in Europe, beating Bayern Munich."
Faulkner left Carrow Road in June 1998 after working in several roles, most latterly taking responsibility for players' physical fitness and mental preparation before heading back to the classroom.
He said: "Running alongside my time at Norwich, I'd been going to Cranfield University, just up the road from Luton.
"A friend of mine worked on one of the management courses and suggested I tried one and I just loved it. It was very psychologically based on understanding people.
"Funnily enough, with all the maps and models on the boards there, I'd been doing that practically at clubs over the years.
"I started to do a lot for a department called Praxis, concerned with self-development.
It was very practical and a lot of people came in who specialised in subjects.
"I was made a visiting fellow, which is something I'm really proud of â€" not really being an academic. It was really nice and I've been going back ever since.
"I manage people on courses and it's basically transferring stuff from sport to business. Sport is all about performance and getting the best out of people. If you do that, they just might perform a bit better.
"I also worked this year at Glenn Hoddle's football academy in Spain doing sports psychology with some of the kids there. They are given intensive skills training, with a bit of psychology and hopefully they can get back in the (football) industry like I did after leaving Charlton."

Pennant seals Pompey move
JERMAINE PENNANT has sealed a loan switch to Portsmouth from Liverpool.
The right winger had been linked with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Hull.
But he has decided to move to south coast to join old Arsenal team-mate Tony Adams.
Pompey boss Adams said: "I’ve known him a long time.
"We were together at Arsenal a long, long time ago. He was the new kid on the block and a very exciting prospect.
“He’s quick and technically very gifted. He can have a go at defenders.
“I saw him play with Peter Crouch for Liverpool at Fulham last year and was constantly getting past their left-back and getting crosses in for Crouchie.
“That’s a good combination that I wanted to put back together.
“He’s going to put some good crosses in and hopefully weigh in with a few crosses himself.”

Ex-Leeds winger Seb carole has today left Darlington after his short term contract expired.
Rumours from Darlington are that he has agreed to join a league one side, believed to be Huddersfield Town.
An out and out winger Carole can play on either flank, and would possibly fill the right wing at Town.

Beijing Guoan make million dollar bid for Newcastle’s Griffiths
Chinese club Beijing Guoan have made a $1 million bid for Newcastle Jets star Joel Griffiths.
In what would be a record deal for Australian football, the 29-year old is believed to be considering the new deal after rejecting a $750,000 move recently.
Younger brother Ryan is on the books at Beijing and the fact a lot of key players have left Newcastle this season could see the deal get over the line.
Jets owner Con Constantine was unsure whether or not the club will sell last season’s leading Corer.
"Yes, there is an offer on the table, and, yes, it is definitely a record offer," he said.
"From a business point of view, it's always nice when clubs around the world want your players, and as I've always said, we don't stand in the way if a player wants to go, and the price is right.
"But Joel is a bit different from the rest. We've just agreed to make him our marquee player for the next three years, we've made him our captain, and we're working towards building our team around him.
"Basically, Joel is our diamond. We need him for the Champions League, so I've got to put a lot of thought into this. They [Beijing] want him now, and it's something that has to be decided pretty soon.
"But I've got to be careful, it's such a big decision. Right now, my mind's not made up."
Ironically the Jets play Beijing Guoan in their first Asian Champions League match in March.

Newcastle’s Griffiths not for sale
Newcastle Jets have insisted that star player Joel Griffiths is not for sale despite a $1million bid from Chinese club Beijing Guoan.
Jets chief executive John Tsatsimas confirmed the club had rejected the offer this week.
"He's a Newcastle Jets contracted player. We want him here. He's our talisman, he's our captain, he's our marquee player," Tsatsimas said.
"Our chairman's indicated he's trying to form a team with Joel as its apex.
"He'll be here for the Asian Champions League."

Fowler to convince wife and kids on Nth Qld move
North Queensland Fury believe they have convinced Robbie Fowler to join the club, now he needs to convince his family.
Fury boss Don Matheson has spent the last few days with the former Liverpool star and said if he could have it his way he’d sign with the club today.
"I think if it was his decision to make on the spot he'd be here," Matheson said.
"But with four kids, his wife's sort of very happy where they are and he's got to get through that."
Fowler was very impressed by the city, the club and the people.
“I have nothing but good things to go home and speak to my wife about in terms of the club and facilities," he told the Townsville Bulletin.
"To say I am impressed is probably an understatement in terms of what they have shown me in the club situation."

Where are they now? Kenny Burns
Ex-United hard man still taking no prisoners

Mention the name Kenny Burns to forwards of the late 1970s and early '80s era and you'll probably be greeted with a grimace.
It's one of football's ironies that the tough-as-teak Scot now spends his time making his footballing audience laugh on the after-dinner circuit â€" after having many a rival for lunch during his playing days.
Larger-than-life two-times European Cup winner Burns' footballing career contained a gallery of highs under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest â€" tasting champagne moments both at home and abroad.
His conversion back from a centre-forward in his days at Birmingham to a defensive enforcer at the City Ground was the work of genius, with his Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in 1977-78 testimony to that.
His arrival at Leeds United in October 1981 shortly after turning 28 â€" with his peak years seemingly to come â€" should have been a marriage made in heaven.
While the take-no-prisoners Glaswegian took on all-comers and never shirked a challenge, he could play â€" in the best traditions of United's greats in the glory days just over half-a-decade earlier.
But it was very much a case of right club, wrong time for Burns, with the Whites a fading force when he made the short trip up the M1 for a princely £400,000.
The bulk of Burns' time in West Yorkshire was played out in the provincial settings of the old second division, and his stint was not without its controversies. Most notably a much publicised fall-out with boss Eddie Gray. Some persistent injuries also blotted his time at the club, which he left to join Derby in February 1984.
But for a winner like Burns, coping with United's exit from the top-flight in the spring of 1982 was the biggest cross to bear and the biggest disappointment of his distinguished career.
East Midlands-based Burns, now 55, said: "Getting relegated with Leeds was probably one of the saddest moments in my lifetime. We had good players, but not enough of them. That was the problem, we had some average players.
"I remember signing. I spoke to Allan (Clarke) and he impressed me. Leeds had got a great history and it was probably one of the best professional teams I'd seen in my life.
"There were still some very, very good players there, such as Trevor Cherry, Paul Hart, Eddie Gray and Peter Barnes. John Lukic wasn't a bad keeper, but that was it really. It wasn't really enough to make a team.
"I don't want to be nasty, but for some it was beyond their limit. To be fair, if you look at some of their careers as they went on, some didn't get to that high a standard again.
"In the great Leeds and Forest teams, they had players who knew actually what to do â€" when and where. That's what makes great players.
"You look at Jackie Charlton and Norman Hunter, they knew when they had to hoof the ball into row Z. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones knew when and where to flick it. Little things like that let us down probably.
"It was the right club at the wrong time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm the most skilful or best player in the world.
But I was honest and knew what to do, when to do it and how to do it.
"We went down and in that year, I remember Allan Clarke saying that he was going to play Peter Barnes all the time. Don't get me wrong, he was a great player. But when you are battling, he's not a fighter, but a skilful player. He was like big Frank Worthington, he had skill you could only dream about. But they weren't battlers.
"Supporters aren't thick or stupid. They like to see a player who can play a bit of football but, if it gets a bit rough, handle themselves. That's the Yorkshire way and the way I played football. And I never gave anything less than 100 per cent.
"I just loved playing football. Now it's all money, money, money.
"I listened to Harry Redknapp last week. He said when Spurs went 1-0 down to Portsmouth, the players were magnificent, they could have folded, packed in and dropped their heads, but they battled back and kept going. They are only getting £50, £60 to £70,000 a week!
"When I went to Leeds, I never asked for a raise or nothing. I just said 'match me what I've got here' and that was it. And that's what they did do."
On life in the second tier and his fall-out with Gray, Burns added: "I had a wee gripe with Jimmy Lumsden (Eddie's assistant). I think that's how me and Eddie fell out, really. It was a bit of banter with Jimmy and, as usual, it went over the top. And that really finished it.
"Eddie stopped playing me so I said 'okay, I want away' and the next thing I knew, I went to Derby (on loan) and managed to help them stay up.
"I think I had an agreement with the chairman, Manny Cussins, at the time â€" that myself, Frank (Worthington) and Peter Barnes had a car in our contracts. He (Cussins) said to me 'show me the writing' and I said 'but it's a gentleman's agreement' and he replied 'not if if it's not in writing, it's not!' I said 'stuff it, then'. So I never played for six months.
"I remember Eddie coming to me and saying 'I totally agree with you 100 per cent'. But he said he could do with me playing and when I did, I ended up player-of-the-year.
"Eddie Gray wasn't recognised enough away from Yorkshire, as a player and a man. I would actually say he's one of the nicest people I've ever met in football.
"I remember we had young players like Neil Aspin, John Sheridan and Dennis Irwin coming through. Who would have thought Dennis would do what he did? He wasn't the quickest â€" clever, but not the quickest.
"John Sheridan had lots of ability, but I think he thought he was a better player than he was at the time. He was a young boy and thought he knew everything. But a very, very good passer of the ball.
"Scott Sellars had a nice left foot and went on to play in the Premiership. Neil was raw, but just gave you everything he had, a real honest player.
"Then, they were all a wee bit too young.
If they were 18 months to two years down the line, it would have been a great help."
Spells at Derby and Barnsley followed with Burns going on to seek his footballing fix at a variety of semi-professional sides in the Midlands.
The time coincided with an ill-fated spell in the pub trade in the sleepy market town of Uttoxeter before Burns â€" blessed with the gift of the gab alongside his more choice footballing skills â€" became a salesman.
On life after Leeds, Burns added: "I signed for Derby, but Arthur Cox was there who I didn't really get on with. I remember we were running, probably in a foot of snow, and I was captain. I went in and he said 'don't you think we were more skilful than we were last year?' I said 'no'. He didn't like that and that was me finished there.
"I then went to Barnsley and did a bit of coaching and Allan (Clarke) let me down a little bit there. One or two things he never backed me up with, I felt.
"He said I was getting on a bit, and yet I was taking the reserves and I was getting up to Sunderland and back down to Derby at probably 1am in the morning and then I went training on the Thursday. He didn't look after me there.
"I then played at Grantham with Martin O'Neill and John Robertson, who were managers there. I just love football, I wish I could still play now. I then went to Ilkeston and ended up having a short spell at Stafford.
"I also took on a pub in the country where I was trying to get punters in by them hearing 'this is Kenny Burns' pub, blah, blah'. I was getting farmers in and they were talking about how quickly they could dunk a sheep! So that was no good. Although I came out of there minus a wife, so that was a result!
"I then got a job in a caravan factory and became a sales rep. I left there and went to a giftware company and was a salesman. I could always sell as I had plenty of gob on me."
A career as a successful footballing raconteur ultimately beckoned with Burns â€" forthright in terms of opinion as he was uncompromising in his playing days â€" currently regaling stories to misty-eyed audiences about his halcyon days with principally Forest and Scotland.
Certainly, if supporters of any clubs could be forgiven for basking in nostalgic footballing glory tales of yesteryear, it's those who follow Leeds and Forest. But while Burns is happy to recount his considerable experiences and rewind the clock, he insists both clubs are foolish to believe they have a divine right to be dining at the top-flight table by reputation alone â€" with the right having very much to be earned.
Burns said: "I really enjoying the speaking. I had lost my licence through drink-driving but I got it back and now do all after-dinners and match-day hospitality at Forest.
"Leeds are one of my old clubs, and I always look for the results of my old teams and want them to do well.
"Leeds are a great club, but while people say they shouldn't be in League One, they should be there, to be fair.
If they are good enough, they'll get out.
"As it stands, they are not good enough to play anywhere else â€" they are there because they haven't done it on the pitch. It was the same with Forest. That's the bottom line â€" you get what you deserve. Leeds are there for a reason â€" because they've been poor.
"To be fair, Forest went up last year and they were very, very lucky. If they didn't go up automatically, I wouldn't have fancied them in the play-offs."

Brighton bring in former winger on trial

Sebastien Carole is back with Brighton after being invited by manager Micky Adams to train with the side.
The French winger had a one-year spell with the club before joining Leeds on a free transfer in 2006.
Carole was released by The Whites earlier this term before being snapped up by Darlington on a short-term contract.
The 26-year-old has spent time with a number of clubs since leaving the Quakers and is now back with Brighton.
Seagulls boss Adams was not at the club the last time Carole was in town and he is eager to access his abilities.
"He's not somebody I've worked with before, but everyone at the club speaks highly of him so we'll take a look at him this week," Adams told the club's official website.

ROYALS SNAP UP HARDING
Reading have signed Dan Harding on loan from Ipswich until the end of the season.
The versatile former England Under-21 international can play anywhere on the left-hand side and the Royals are just waiting to finalise the paperwork and seal the deal.

And he said: "At a time when the window is coming to a close, Dan will give us that extra element of competition and insurance going into what is a very critical stage of the season.
"He can do a good job for us anywhere on the left hand side of the pitch, and he is a player that I know well."

Foxe will take what he can get at Perth Glory
Former Leeds and West Ham defender Hayden Foxe is prepared to sign a performance-based contract at Perth Glory.
“I want to stay in Perth but I’ve got to be honest. I’ve come back and I’ve played six games last year and two games this year so I can’t argue with whatever the club says,” he said.
“I could be on a pay-as-you-play contract. It depends how they structure it, but I’d be willing to do that."

Foxe, Petkovic to be offloaded by Perth Glory
Hayden Foxe and Jason Petkovic are set to be offloaded by Perth Glory at the end of the season.
"It's going to be difficult, probably, to keep Hayden on, in the sense he hasn't played enough games," Glory coach Dave Mitchell said.
"He's been in football all his career, so I think any player that hasn't played enough realises that.
"It's been bitterly disappointing that we haven't had him on the park as much as we would've liked, but that's football."
While a final decision is yet to be made, Mitchell said he also expected Petkovic to go at the end of the season.

Foxe unlikely to remain with Perth Glory
Perth Glory defender Hayden Foxe is unlikely to remain at the club next season.
The former Portsmouth, West Ham and Leeds player has managed just eight matches in two seasons with the Glory and is expected to be let go by coach Dave Mitchell.

Seb Carole latest link to Town
Ex-Leeds winger Seb carole has today left Darlington after his short term contract expired.
Rumours from Darlington are that he has agreed to join a league one side, believed to be Huddersfield Town.
An out and out winger Carole can play on either flank, and would possibly fill the right wing at Town.
http://www.darlington-fc.net/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10339~29496,00.html
Carole training at Huddersfield but no contract
SEB CAROLE is training with Town, but boss Lee Clark says he has no imminent plans to sign the former Leeds winger.
The Frenchman is a free agent after his short-term contract with Darlington ended.
Seagulls look at Carole
Brighton bring in former winger on trial

Carole has no regrets
Seb Carole wants to clear the air with chairman Dick Knight on his return to Albion, three years after quitting the club for Leeds.
The French winger is back with the Seagulls on a short-term contract for the rest of the season and is in the squad for today’s home game against Hartlepool.
Carole was a regular in the Albion side relegated from the Championship under Mark McGhee in 2005-2006.
He made a controversial exit by exploiting a clause in his contract to join Leeds on a free transfer.
Carole, 26, said: “Hopefully I will see the chairman today and have a chat with him. It will be nice to see him again. I hope he is not too upset because I left three years ago! I don’t know if he is happy for me to be back but we’ll find out soon I guess.
“I signed a two-year contract with a clause that if we went down I could go somewhere else for free.
“I think I did well for Brighton, even though we went down. I understand why the chairman was a bit upset that I left.
“He was ready to offer me a new contract, even though the club went down, which was really nice and I appreciated that.
“I didn't go to a League One club in competition with Brighton, I went to Leeds to try to reach the Premier League.
“I was 24 at that time and it was a dream chance. That is the only reason I left, because I really like Brighton. The club has great ambition, which you can see now that the new stadium is being built.”
Carole’s career at Leeds was wrecked by managerial upheaval after Kevin Blackwell signed him on a three-year contract.
His chances were limited under both Dennis Wise and Gary McAllister and he has rejoined Albion after training with Blackwell's Sheffield United, a brief trial with Huddersfield and a short spell on a month-to-month contract at Darlington.
Carole, signed by Micky Adams after impressing on trial this week, said: “In life you have to live with no regrets. In the same situation now I would have gone to Leeds, with the chance to get into the best division in the world.
“I've got no regrets about leaving but it's a pleasure to come back and I will be doing my best for the club to get them back on track.”

Where are they now:
Legend Jones is loving life back at Leeds

Squad rotation is taken as read in modern-day top-flight football â€" but the concept was a foreign one to Leeds United in their heyday.
And while striking legend Mick Jones is of the view that United paid the price for not operating the tinkerman tactics successfully employed by all of today's managerial giants â€" by way of silverware â€" he wouldn't have swapped eras for anything.
By any stretch of the imagination, Jones' Elland Road career was glorious.
It dovetailed perfectly with United's rise to the summit of English football under the masterful leadership of Don Revie following his big-money arrival for a whopping £100,000 from Tyke rivals Sheffield United in September 1967.
But while the Whites' trophy cabinet contained a fair few jewels in a glittering spell, the glaring fact that it wasn't bulging at the seams wasn't lost upon Worksop-born Jones.
For the record, the 63-year-old â€" now living in semi-retirement in South Yorkshire â€" won two championships and two Fairs Cup's under the stewardship of Revie, along with the FA Cup in 1972 when he was memorably helped up to the Royal Box with his arm in a sling after damaging his shoulder late on in the 1-0 win over Bertie Mee's Arsenal.
But two cup final reverses and countless other near misses at home and abroad â€" most notably in their abortive treble raid in 1970 â€" left deep scars and an undeniable sense of 'if only', allied to an unwanted tag of 'nearly men'.
Rotation at the business end of several campaigns could have yielded more tangible reward for United, who were basically victims of their own success, in the eyes of Jones.
And maybe it would have played a hand in prolonging a career which ended prematurely due to a serious knee injury at the age of 29.
Capped three times by England, Jones still looks back on his time at United â€" in a glorious era for post-war football as a whole â€" with a misty-eye, feeling fortunate enough to be able to recount his memories to young and old alike as part of his corporate hospitality work on match-days at Elland Road.
Back in his day, title races and cup chases contained more than the usual "top four" suspects who seem to have carved up the honours in the cash-rich Sky TV era.
While Leeds were the flag-bearers for Yorkshire, both Merseyside and Manchester giants â€" principally City â€" sporadically jousted for prizes with United in Jones' goal-den Elland Road stint from 1967 to 1974 when six different sides won the title.
The Midlands assault was headed by Brian Clough's Derby, while the likes of Wolves and Stoke also flexed their muscles and that's without even mentioning London's big hitters of Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea.
Jones told the YEP: "Our problem was we went for too much. We went out of three competitions in 10 days in 1970.
"In hindsight, we should have gone for two (competitions) each year and not three or four and that's probably why we didn't win as much as we should have done.
"The schedule was almost the same each year.
I think if you could fault Don Revie â€" we all thought of him as an absolutely marvellous man and manager â€" apart from his superstitions, it was that he didn't use his squad enough.
"There were 15 or 16 of us (internationals), but he stuck by more or less the same team, week-in, week-out and played the same 11 or 12.
"We had five internationals who weren't playing every week and playing them wouldn't have weakened the side.
"A pro called Carl Asaba asked me about two or three years ago how many games we played during a season? I said: 'oh, 70'. And he looked at me like I'd gone mad! We used to play on mudheaps as well and he said if he played 30, it would be plenty for him.
"We had to play on all types of pitches back then, you accepted it. It was part and parcel of the job.
"Looking back, that's maybe why I finished so early.
"We had six or seven games left in the 1973-74 season and I had got this knee problem. Don Revie wanted me to play, I'd got 26 league goals and was having a cracking season, and he said they'd get it sorted out at the end of the season.
"But the knee joint was worn, it had gone through. We won the league, but then I had a big operation and it didn't work and I knew I was finished at top level and 18 months later, I retired.
"But I wouldn't swap my career then for now. People say 'if you played now, you'd be a multi-millionaire'. But for me, I had a fabulous career and played with fabulous footballers who were all British. I'm not jealous of the money they get nowadays."
The heavyweight footballing clashes of the early 70s â€" invariably featuring Leeds â€" are stuff of legend in footballing circles, from the famous 1970 European Cup semi against Celtic â€" watched by an aggregate crowd of 182,000 people â€" to the Whites' famous Wembley cup finals against Chelsea, Arsenal and Sunderland.
Jones was privileged to play in all those games and a few more besides, with the seismic showdowns etched into United folklore.
On his medley of memories, Jones added: "Personally, one of the main games for me was the Fairs Cup final win against Ferencvaros in 1968 because Leeds had never won a European trophy. I got the only goal in the first leg, and we went to Budapest and drew 0-0.
"They hammered us, but Gary Sprake was absolutely fantastic. He took some stick, but when he was busy, he was brilliant.
"I remember the 1970 cup final at Wembley â€" they'd had the Horse of the Year show on it the week before. We took salt tablets before that game to stop getting muscle cramp; you walked on and you just sunk in the grass.
"Many went down with cramp at the end of the game. But we hammered Chelsea that day. I meet up with Peter Bonetti still and he always says: 'Christ, you hammered us at Wembley.' And then they won the replay at Old Trafford.
"Then there was the Centenary Cup final against Arsenal, which was watched by millions around the world.
"I'm remembered for that game everywhere I go â€" even now. It's nearly 40 years on, but people still come up to me and say 'you're the fellow who went down with the injury'. It's nice, although it wasn't a nice feeling at the time!
"1972 was a massive year â€" 1973 wasn't. After Sunderland, everyone was writing us off and felt we were finished and said we were too old.
"Don Revie said at the start of the 1973-74 season that we aren't going to lose a match and are going to win the league. And we went 29 games without losing and won the league and rammed things down people's throats.
"But after that season, the team was getting old and that was it. I finished with injury, John Giles was coming towards the end and the team was splitting up. Don Revie knew this and I think it was why he took the England job.
"It was a bad time after that. Brian Clough came and he shouldn't have come at that time, he wasn't right for Leeds United. If he'd have come five years later, he'd have probably been the right man. He'd have probably kept the club up there with a different set of players."
In today's transfer market, Jones would have been worth millions, but the down-to-earth young striker certainly wasn't courted by Revie amid a fanfare of publicity or secret meetings in plush hotels and the like â€" despite his hefty six-figure transfer.
More a visit from the great man to Jones' humble home, with not an agent in sight!
Jones â€" who worked in a cycle factory and played for a colliery side before being handed his first professional break at Bramall Lane â€" said: "It was a huge move at the time.
"The money for players is nonsense now, but back then, it was a British record for both clubs â€" £100,000 was mega money in those days.
"John Harris (Sheffield United manager) said he was going to resign over it, apparently. I'd come up from being a kid there and went onto play for England. I had a good time there.
"The move was a surprise, to be honest. You didn't have agents in those days and you dealt with everything yourself.
"Clubs never mentioned it when other clubs were after you. It came out of the blue, but apparently Don Revie had said he'd been after me for two years, which was news to me!
"Along with other clubs, like Arsenal and Liverpool, he said he'd put the best offer in for me.
"But Sheffield United never mentioned it. I only found out when I came home from shopping one Friday afternoon that him (Revie) and his chairman were at my house. I'd just got married and had moved into a semi-detacted house and he was waiting outside â€" that's how it worked then. It's a bit different now.
"I remember they said to me: 'Are you ambitious'. And I said: 'Very much so.' And Don said: 'Well, you're the man I want, I've been after you for two years.
"I'm remembered for that game everywhere I go â€" even now. It's nearly 40 years on, but people still come up to me and say 'you're the fellow who went down with the injury'. It's nice, although it wasn't a nice feeling at the time!

Former Premier League star Olivier Dacourt has told skysports.com that he is hoping to seal a move before the transfer window closes.
Parma potential home for Bolton target Dacourt
Former Leeds and Everton midfielder Olivier Dacourt is remaining coy about a proposed move to Serie B team Pama.
Currently with Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan, the 34-year old has been linked with a move to Bolton but his future remains unclear.
"I want to play full stop, so I don't know [about joining] Parma,” Dacourt told skysports.com.
"It is a great club, but I have nothing to say yet, thanks, wait and see on the 31st of January."

Cottagers keen on Dacourt loan deal
Fulham are reportedly in talks with Inter Milan over a loan move for veteran midfielder Olivier Dacourt before the transfer window closes.
Roy Hodgson has already brought in promising youngster Giles Barnes from Derby and has now made an enquiry about securing Dacourt's services.
The former Strasbourg, Everton, Lens, Leeds and Roma man is not in Jose Mourinho's plans and has featured in just 15 minutes of Serie A action this season.
With Jimmy Bullard having been allowed to leave Craven Cottage for Hull City, Hodgson sees Dacourt as an ideal addition to his team's engine room.
The 34-year-old former France international has commanded over £21million in transfer fees during his career.
Fulham are hoping to strike a deal with the Italian giants which would see Dacourt move on loan to West London for the remainder of the campaign before the transfer window closes at 5pm on Monday.

Harte ends Seasiders stay
Former Leeds United defender Ian Harte has had his contract with Blackpool terminated by mutual consent.
The 31-year-old left-back moved to Bloomfield Road last month on loan and started five games for the Seasiders.
His stay with the club was extended last month but the Republic of Ireland international has failed to feature in the last two matches.
A brief statement on the club's official website read: "Blackpool FC would like to thank Ian for his efforts over the past few weeks and would like to wish him all the very best for the future."

KEANE CLEARED FOR SPURS TALKS
Liverpool have given Robbie Keane permission to talk to Spurs about a return to London.
But the Reds stress that no deal has yet been finalised for the Republic of Ireland striker.
Keane moved to Anfield in the summer for a fee of around £20million, but has failed to reproduce his best form on Merseyside.
And on Monday afternoon Liverpool confirmed that while no fee has been agreed, Keane has permission to talk to Spurs.
The club's official website stated: "Liverpool Football Club have confirmed that they've granted Robbie Keane permission to talk to Tottenham Hotspur about a possible return to White Hart Lane but insist no deal has been finalised between the two clubs."

Robbie Fowler signs two-year contract with North Queensland Fury

North Queensland may be a long way from Merseyside, but that is where former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has decided to settle, signing a two-year deal with an Australian A-League club.
The 33-year-old, released from Blackburn last December, was today announced as the new million-dollar star signing with North Queensland Fury FC, based in Townsville, in Australia’s hot and humid Top End.
He becomes the inaugural marquee player for the 2009-2010 season debutants, after being convinced of the benefits of moving to Australia during a visit last month.
Fowler cited the laid-back lifestyle of the tropical city, 800 miles north of Brisbane in Australia’s north eastern coast, as one of the deciding factors to spend the next few years Down Under, as opposed to the financial incentive of his contract, believed to be worth approximately $2 million (900,000) over the two years.
“I had nothing but good things to tell my family about the football side of things and the lifestyle opportunities North Queensland can offer us,” Fowler, who rejected an offer from Sydney FC in 2007, said in a statement released earlier today.
“From a football perspective, everything Fury coach Ian Ferguson put on the table and showed me was first class and the enthusiasm and drive of everyone at the club is fantastic.
“It’s a huge decision for my family, but it’s also an opportunity to continue my football career I a truly wonderful part of the world.”
Fury FC coach Ian Ferguson said having the former international striker on their team had already boosted the spirits of the club, which makes its debut in the Australian A-League later this year.
“I’ve admired him as a player for so long and it’s just fantastic to have him signed,” Mr Ferguson said.
“Robbie is more than just a goal scorer â€" although he certainly knows where the net is â€" he links up play and he knows how to position himself to get other players involved.”
Fowler and his British manager George Scott visited Townsville last month to meet with the club’s officials and get a sense of the city which will be his home for the next two years.
During his stay the English player took in the local tourist attractions, played golf, visited nearby tropical islands, and looked at the football club’s facilities.

Mr Ferguson, a former player in the Scottish League, said a chance conversation with Mr Scott, an old friend, had set the ball in motion to broker the deal to lure Fowler to Australia.
He said money was not a deciding factor for Fowler, one of the richest football players in Britain, but the idea taking his family to live in a warm environment - albeit one where crocodiles, jellyfish and tropical cyclones are not uncommon.
“I told him you spend 90 per cent of your time back home in your house, but here (in Townsville) it’s 90 per cent spent in the backyard, in the pool or having barbeques,” Mr Ferguson told Times Online.
“That was the biggest thing that got him here.”
But he added while Fowler fell in love with the idea of bringing his family to live in the sun, he was also keen to get back on the field.
“He wants to play again, he wants to get back in and show people he can still play, here’s a determined man.”
Mr Ferguson said he was not concerned about Fowler’s fitness, describing him as a player of “great quality”.
“I’m really looking forward to working with him,” he said.
Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley also hailed the arrival of the striker, known as "God" to Liverpool fans.
"Robbie Fowler is one of the best known names in football with a wonderful record playing for both Liverpool and England," Mr Buckley said.
"It's terrific to welcome him to the A-League and particularly to one of our newest clubs."
Fowler scored 183 goals in 265 appearances during his two stints with Liverpool but also had spells with Leeds, Manchester City and Cardiff before ending his career in England with Blackburn.
He scored seven goals in 27 appearances for England.
The striker is hugely popular, but has also had his share of controversy.
He made world headlines in 1999 when he responded to Everton taunts by mimicking cocaine snorting on the touchline during a goal celebration in a Merseyside derby.
Fowler is the second high profile ex-Premier League player to join Australia’s A-League, after Dwight Yorke’s successful stint with Sydney FC during the league’s inaugural season.

Plymouth's Walton put up for sale
Plymouth midfielder Simon Walton has been put on the transfer list and fined two-weeks wages after his red card in the 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on Saturday.
Walton, 21, was sent off for kicking out at Anderson Da Silva after a foul.
"I do feel that it's only appropriate. He's let down his fellow players as well which is a big disappointment to me," Sturrock told BBC Spotlight.

Walton linked with Crewe
Crewe Alexandra boss Gudjon Thordarson was unhappy at being linked to Plymouth Argyle midfielder Simon Walton, the 21-year-old Sherburn star who was transfer-listed in December following the sixth red card of his short career.
It was reported in some sections of the media that Walton was set to join the club on loan.
But a bemused Thordarson told BBC Radio Stoke: "I don't understand where that has come from. I hadn't even heard of the player. There is no truth in that one. There are always names being thrown around, and always people that I'm looking at."
Walton was apparently a target for former Alex manager Steve Holland last year but turned down the chance of a move before finally settling with his family in Plymouth last summer.

Dacourt: Leeds United should be in Premier League

Former Leeds United midfielder Olivier Dacourt says the club should be back in the Premier League where it belongs.
The new Fulham midfielder, who admits he nearly quit football after his knee injury a year ago, says his spell at Elland Road was his best time in English football.
The 34-year-old quit Inter Milan team for Craven Cottage this week.
Dacourt said of his time at Leeds: "We had a fantastic team and the atmosphere was the best that I've felt in football.
"I'm surprised and sad at what happened to Leeds.
"The club and fans deserve to be in the Premier League."

Royals to unlock Harding's potential

READING are convinced they can bring out the best of Dan Harding and help him fulfil his potential.
The 25-year-old joined from Ipswich Town on loan last week until the end of the season.
The move surprised many fans who questioned why the Royals needed a player who could not hold down a regular place in a mid-table Town side.
But they insist they have made an astute signing by landing Harding who will provide much-needed cover anywhere down the left.
Coppell knew the Gloucester-born player from his time in charge of Brighton when Harding was a youngster.
His displays for the south-coast club led to a trumpeted £850,000 move to Leeds United in 2005. But he struggled for first-tea m football at Elland Road and eventually left for Ipswich in a swap deal with Ian Westlake.
However, after an impressive start at Portman Road, he lost his place and was loaned to League One Southend United before Reading came in last week.
And Royals director of football Nick Hammond admitted: “Dan is an interesting one. He has a lot of very good criteria in terms of the physical and technical attributes required to be a top player.
“He burst onto the scene and joined Leeds for a lot of money when he was still relatively young. But his career has flattened out a bit since then and he has failed to live up to that promise.
“However, we feel he’s a boy who needs to the right environment in which to flourish and we believe we can provide him with that. He’s 25 now and he needs to kick on. He’s matured a lot recently as he is now married with a young daughter.
”He needs the right home and we think he will have that here. The ball is now in his court and he is desperate to do well between now and the end of the season in order to win a long term contract with us.”
Harding found life unbearable at Portman Road under Town boss Jim Magilton. The final straw arrived the day he was left out of their glittering FA Cup tie at Chelsea recently despite starting the previous game in a superb 4-1 victory at Crystal Palace, his one and only league appearance for the Tractor Boys this season.
Harding was not in the Reading squad for the 0-0 draw at Queens Park Rangers last Saturday, though he did travel with his new team-mates.
And the ex-England Under 21 star declared: “I found out Reading were interested. I knew they had seen me play a few games so I was delighted when they came in for me.
“I played in our 4-1 win at Crystal Palace but I was left out completely when we played Chelsea in the FA Cup.
“I went from playing in a team that won 4-1 to not even being in the squad.
“It obviously showed he (Magilton) had a personal problem with me. It was nothing to do with football. Then he told me Reading had come in and that I could go. That was it as far as I was concerned.
“Obviously, I was disappointed when it became clear I wasn’t part of the manager’s plans so it was brilliant when a new challenge came about.”
He added: “I’ve come to a club that is doing really well. The lads in the team deserve to be there. I can’t complain if I don’t play straight away so I just have to train hard and hope things progress from there.
“Steve Coppell knows me and what I can do. I was only a kid at Brighton when he was manager there. He did a fantastic job and I was in and around the first-team, though I didn’t play many games.
“I’ve come here on loan and if I can prove myself I hope something can happen at the end of it. I can play anywhere down the left-hand side and if there is a hole that needs to be filled I can fill it.
“I want to help with whatever needs to be done. Hopefully along the way I can impress a few people and earn a permanent contract.”

Telfer: I made the right call

Paul Telfer today insisted his deadline-day departure from Leeds United was in the best interests of the club, admitting the squad at Elland Road has swollen to an unhealthy size.
The 37-year-old defender cut short his season-long deal with Leeds on Monday afternoon, terminating the contract by mutual consent, and he saw his exit as a necessary way of helping reduce the crowd of more than 25 professionals who are under the control of manager Simon Grayson.
Telfer, who was signed by ex-Leeds boss Gary McAllister and made 18 appearances during the first half of this term, found himself on the fringes of United's plans after Grayson's appointment in December, and the pair agreed that a parting of ways would be sensible before the January transfer window closed at 5pm on Monday.
Telfer said: "It's strange because Simon's in the same position that Gary McAllister was in when he first came to Leeds.
"The club have got far too many players on their books and it's something Simon's trying to address. It's not always a healthy situation when you've got big groups of guys who are training with a club but aren't going to play, and I thought it was best if I helped him with that.
"I wasn't in the team and I accepted that because the defence improved under him with other players in it, so I went to see him and said that I thought it would be better for him if I wasn't hanging around the place.
"He assured me that I wasn't in the way or causing a nuisance but he was very honest about the fact that I might not get a game there.
"It was all very amicable and we decided it was best to go our separate ways. I think it was important for Leeds that I took that decision."
Telfer was a speculative signing in August when McAllister took him on a free transfer, reviving a career which had been threatened by a serious foot injury eight months earlier.
His time with Leeds started promisingly, but Telfer's form deteriorated as United's results worsened in the run-up to Christmas and McAllister's sacking on December 21.
Richard Naylor's recent arrival at Leeds increased further the competition for places in Grayson's defence, and Telfer was one of two departures from Elland Road on deadline day with young goalkeeper Jonathan Lund also agreeing to terminate his contract.

Exclusive: St Mirren deal could resurrect Celtic dream, says Ian Harte

FORMER Leeds United star Ian Harte last night revealed how he hopes to use a shock move to St Mirren to resurrect his dream of signing for Celtic.
Free agent Harte spoke exclusively to Record Sport as he signed for Paisley boss Gus MacPherson until the and of the season.
The 31-year-old hopes to use his time in Ferguslie Park to rebuild a career which has taken him to a World Cup, the Champions League and UEFA Cup semi-finals and seen him line up against some of the best attackers in the world in the Premiership and La Liga.
And Harte believes he can follow in the footsteps of fellow Irishman Willo Flood by using the short-term deal to win a long-term future in Paradise. Harte revealed he spoke to Hoops boss Gordon Strachan about leaving Spanish side Levante for Celtic three years ago.
He added: "I look at someone like Willo Flood and I think to myself, 'That could be me'.
"Willo went up to Dundee United from Cardiff and did well at Tannadice.
"He earned himself a move to Celtic and fair play to him for that.
"It's a dream for guys like Willo and myself to get a chance like that.
"I hope I can get the same opportunity to show what I can do at St Mirren."
MacPherson was delighted to land the player, who was used to multi-million pound salaries at Leeds and his other former clubs, Levante and Sunderland.
He left the Stadium of Light last summer and recently had a brief spell at Blackpool.
MacPherson said: "He has made his money and I can assure you he isn't coming to St Mirren for that!
"He is here because he wants to play football.
"I had recently seen Ian playing for Blackpool so when we got a phone call to say he was available, we knew that he was exactly what we were looking for.
"I know he hasn't played that much first-team football lately but he has been keeping himself fit - we have done our homework.
"Boys like Ian Harte don't get offered to you very often and the guy is desperate to play football."
Harte could make his debut in tomorrow's Homecoming Scottish Cup fifth-round tie at Motherwell.
MacPherson said: "Ian will train wi th us on Friday morning and then we'll make a decision after that on whether he goes into the squad for Saturday."

Gardner ends spell at Elland Road
League One outfit Leeds' youngster Scott Gardner has left Elland Road after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
The 20-year-old made two appearances last season for United but has not featured this term.
He said: "I'm sad to be leaving because I've been here for a long time but this is the next chapter for me.
"There is a good squad of players here and hopefully this is now an opportunity for me to play regular competitive football."
Egen tråd: http://www.leedsunited.no/forum/index.php?topic=11741.0

Gardner out to prove his worth with Stags
THERE is no doubting Scott Gardner's pedigree. An England international at under-16 and under-17 level, he came through the ranks at Leeds with a crop of players that included Aaron Lennon and Fabian Delph.
But reputations count for very little in the Blue Square Premier, as the 20-year-old knows only too well.
Gardner only joined Mansfield on Monday, but he is not totally alien to life in the top tier of English non-league football.
Only last year the right-sided player swapped the plush surroundings of Elland Road for the less salubrious Throstle Nest, home of Farsley Celtic.
There he gained a valuable insight into life away from a big club.
Now he finds himself in a similar situation at the Stags, having been released from his Leeds contract last week by mutual consent.
Gardner has plenty to prove, but is hoping to show that former Leeds first team coach Neil McDonald, now assistant manager at Blackburn, was right to recommend him to Stags boss David Holdsworth.
He said: "I was at Leeds for about ten years and it was brilliant to sign for them because they were my team when I was growing up.
"I played at every level for them but I had to move on to progress my career.
"While I was there they had Aaron Lennon (now at Tottenham) and Fabian Delph, who is doing well for Leeds and has played for England at under-21 level.
"There were also other lads there who are playing in Leagues One and Two now, and I would like to think I have learned from being with them."
But Gardner is under no illusions about how tough Conference football really is.
"It is obviously not quite as good as the first-team level at Leeds, but it is still a high standard and a lot more competitive than reserve team football," he said.
"Every player has to be ambitious â€" you shouldn't be playing otherwise â€" and I want to get back in the league and play as high as I can.
"I'm hoping I can do that by coming to Mansfield, because the manager here is just as ambitious as I am.
"With the ground and past history, Mansfield are not a Conference club. If we can't make the play-offs this season hopefully we can get promoted the following year."
Gardner was born in Luxembourg but grew up in Harrogate and joined his favourite team when he was "ten or 11."
He made his senior Leeds debut in a 1-0 Carling Cup win over Macclesfield Town in August 2007, and played his first league game for the club in a 2-1 victory over Gillingham at the end of last season.
But Gardner feels the move to Field Mill is a positive one.
He said: "When I spoke to the manager at Mansfield I liked what I heard. "We both want to achieve things and hopefully we can help each other.
"He's played at a good level and had a very good career, so he knows the game inside out. I'm sure I can learn a few things from him.
"It is a good time to join because the team is going well and the spirits are high."
With Gary Silk suspended for tomorrow's game with York, Gardner faces a straight battle with fellow new signing Gianluca Havern for the right-back spot.
But the 20-year-old believes he can impress just as much on the right wing in the long-term, where he can utilise his attacking instincts.
He said: "I have a bit of pace, I like to get forward whether I play at right-back or right midfield, and I like to beat my man and get in the crosses.
"But at the same time I am young and there are plenty of things I can improve on.
"There are a few good players who can play in my positions and the team is on a good run.
"But I am just hoping to show in training exactly what I can do."

Leeds Utd's 1970s team reunited for Earl's birthday

Surviving Leeds United greats with the Earl of Harewood, front row, centre, for his 86th birthday. Back row from left, Paul Reaney, Jack Charlton, Paul Madeley, Mick Jones, Eddie Gray, and Norman Hunter. Front row, left to right, Gordon McQueen, Allan Clarke, Mick Bates and Peter Lorimer.

THEIR footballing talents brought Leeds United great success on the pitch in the late 1960s and early 1970s and they were reunited to pay a surprise tribute to one of their greatest fans.
To mark the Earl of Harewood's 86th birthday some of the club's most famous faces from the Don Revie era showed their appreciation for his passionate support for their club and were reunited at Harewood House, near Leeds.
Among those at the celebration were Jack Charlton, Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer, Mick Jones, Allan Clarke, Gordon McQueen and Norman Hunter. Billy Bremner's widow, Vicki, also attended.
Lord Harewood was not aware of the surprise gathering until he walked into the state dining room and gallery at his stately home to find the sporting greats awaiting his arrival.
The surprise birthday party was organised by Danny Beecham, under butler and the family's head chef, and Molly Kelly, butler, with help from Lady Harewood and former United star Paul Reaney, who also attended.
Mr Beecham said yesterday he had been planning Sunday's birthday lunch since before Christmas and managed to keep it a secret from Lord Harewood.
"He was very surprised. He knew nothing until he actually came down into the dining room.
"First of all he said he was totally surprised and then he said he would never trust me again," Mr Beecham joked.
"He is such a football fanatic as far as Leeds is concerned and obviously England.
"He goes to all the home games, and when I started seeing all the footballers and I knew his birthday was coming up I just thought it would be a lovely surprise for him since he has been involved with Leeds United for so long.
"When they were at Wembley I took him down to the play-offs.
"Obviously because of his age now, he does not get to any
away matches but he will go to all the home matches no matter what.
Mr Beecham added: "It was fabulous. Big Jack (Charlton), it was fantastic to talk to him."
The Earl has been president of Leeds United since 1961 and is a former president of the Football Association.
He marked his birthday on Saturday with family and friends.
Former Leeds United players and their wives attended the birthday lunch at Harewood House.
Staff had organised a buffet lunch and photographs were taken to mark the occasion as players and guests reminisced about the old days.
Under their manager, the late Don Revie, Leeds United won titles including the FA Cup and two First Division titles.
Between 1964 and 1975, the team finished second in the league five times, lost three
FA Cup finals, and three European finals, including the 1975 European Cup to Bayern Munich.
Mr Beecham said that after all his planning he was concerned that the weather might intervene and prevent some of the Leeds United stars being at the party.
But the snow held off on Sunday and the birthday lunch went ahead as planned.
Mr Beecham says he is now wondering how he can top such an impressive line-up for the Earl's 87th birthday.
"Maybe I should get the old team and the new team and get them playing a match outside," he used.
Harewood will throw open its gates to the public this year on Friday.
The gardens and grounds are open from Thursday, to February 22 for half-term and the grounds remain open each weekend until April 3 when Harewood will open fully for the season.

The Elland Road revolution
* Leeds were a mediocre team in the late 1950s; in 1961 they appointed Don Revie, right, their captain, as manager.
* Revie was famous for the bone-crushing, win-at-all costs football that brought his Leeds teams success in the sixties and seventies, a style of play that didn't always win Leeds plaudits.
* He was good at encouraging young talent and he inherited several outstanding players, including Paul Reaney, and made astute signings including Manchester United's Johnny Giles.
* They won the First Division twice in 1969 and 1974 and won the League Cup in 1968 and the FA Cup in 1972. But there was a sense that they could have won more - between 1964 and 1975 they finished second in the league five times.
* Revie died in 1989 aged 61 of motor neurone disease.

Hart pumps for Pompey

PAUL HART wants to keep Portsmouth in the Premier League to repay them for saving him from the scrapheap.
Hart was ready to turn his back on the game after being sacked as boss of non-league Rushden & Diamonds in 2006 before being offered the job of academy chief at Fratton Park.
Hart, in caretaker charge for Pompey’s crucial home clash with Manchester City today, said: “I owe it to Portsmouth to help them stay up â€" it is my duty.
“After I left Rushden I sent my cv to every club in the country and Portsmouth were the ones who gave me a chance to get back in and coach the youngsters, which is what I am best at.
“My last game in first-team management was against Northwich Victoria so enough said about that the better.
“I have very little experience at Premier League level but the last four days since I was offered the job have been fantastic.
“I do not know how long I will be here but it has already been longer than my last caretaker job, which was an hour-and-a- half at Leeds.
“That must be one of the shortest managerial careers on record but in that time I was tingling with excitement â€" as I have been this week.”
Hart is bidding to end a run of nine matches without a league win, which cost Tony Adams his job.
Hart, who will be assisted by Brian Kidd, said: “Results have not been good but the players have been fantastic with me this week.”

Lund was number two at Elland Road but is going to be freed and Coyle will decide whether to offer him a contract shortly. Coyle, pictured, has let Hungarian Gabor Kiraly join Bayer Leverkusen on loan and he is unlikely to return, so he is in the market for cover.

Gavin Rothery er på utlån/prøvespill fra Harrogate og til Carlisle. Rothery ble veiet og funnet for lett i York, men har nå imponert Greg Abbott i Carlisle.....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_conf/7845137.stm

Rothery offered deal by Carlisle
League One outfit Carlisle have offered a one-month contract to midfielder Gavin Rothery after impressing in a trial spell.
The 21-year-old has been with the Cumbrians since the beginning of January and has impressed enough to be handed the short deal.
Manager Greg Abbott said: "We're going to offer Gavin a month.
"We've seen enough to be optimistic about him and this will give him a period of time where he can show us what he can do."
http://www.carlisleunited.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10361~1538468,00.html

Rothery: I want the chance to settle down somewhere

HAVE boots, will travel. It has become the defining theme of Gavin Rothery’s career since he was released from Leeds United a year ago â€" and one he will happily dispatch for good as he sets about establishing himself at Carlisle United.

Back with Abbott: Carlisle United's Gavin Rothery in action for United Reserves against
Manchester City Reserves on Monday

Brunton Park is the latest of umpteen staging posts for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder since his dream of becoming a Leeds hero was ended last April, after 12 years with his beloved Yorkshire giants.
Cheltenham, Oldham, Rochdale, Carlisle, Chesterfield, Rotherham, York, Harrogate Town and now Carlisle again â€" Rothery has pitched up at all of these places in the last 10 months, each time trying to reignite a career which once looked destined for the stars.
He was one of the most talked about players to emerge from Leeds’ academy, earning England Under-19 honours and brushing the fringes of the first-team until injuries killed his hopes of an Elland Road future.
Now, on a short-term contract with Carlisle under his former Leeds youth boss Greg Abbott, he intends to prove on training ground and in reserve matches that he is worth a longer deal â€" and finally some professional stability.
“What I really want is to settle down somewhere,” Rothery says. “Hopefully that will be here at Carlisle. It’s a good set-up, all the lads are sound and I’m really liking it here.”
It is the familiar presence of Abbott in the manager’s office that encourages Rothery to believe Brunton Park might just be the permanent destination he craves.
“He used to be my youth team manager at Leeds, with the Under 18s,”he says. “He was quality to play for. I like to think he knows what my strengths and weaknesses are.
“When I was at that age, I was flying, doing really well. I played for England Under-19s and I was looking to kick on and try and get in the first team at Leeds.
“I got on the bench once, but I never really got a chance once I got back from injury. I was injured for more or less a full season a couple of years ago. It was a problem with my ankle ligaments, I just kept doing it and doing it, and ended up having an operation on it.
“I was out for quite a while and it never really happened for me once I came back.
“I started at Leeds when I was just eight. I came through the academy and had four years there full-time. So it wasn’t nice to leave after such a long time, but I could kind of see it coming.
“I wasn’t really going anywhere, there was a change of manager as well and Dennis Wise didn’t really know anything about me. The chance didn’t seem to come for me so when I was released by Gary McAllister later on in the season it didn’t come as a massive surprise.
“That’s football. You have to move on. The injuries were a real setback but you’ve got to get on with it. I’m more or less finding my feet again now.”
Rothery played the fourth reserve game of his United stint on Monday night, when the Blues’ second string was soundly beaten 4-1 by Manchester City’s emerging young stars.
The 21-year-old claimed two goals in his previous three outings, and has three more weeks to convince Abbott he can make a lasting impact on his developing squad.
“It’s an ever-extending trial, really,” he says. “I’ve just got to perform straight away, and try and impress.
“My best position is in the hole, in front of two midfielders, or coming in as a wide man.
“The gaffer has said I’ve done alright, and it’s up to me to try and keep proving myself in training and matches.
“There is a strong squad and quite a big squad here, to be fair. I’ve got to prove I can step into the first team.
“At my age now, I need to be ready for that. I’m not a young lad any more. I’ll give it my best shot and try to take my chance.
“Hopefully that will mean I can get settled down and get a bit of length on my contract.”

ADAMS LEAVES BRIGHTON
League One strugglers Brighton have confirmed manager Micky Adams has left the club by mutual consent.
The 47-year-old has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks with the Seagulls languishing in the relegation zone.
Albion chairman Dick Knight released a statement on the club's official website which read: "Nobody would dispute that results have been disappointing and I am very sad, as all Albion fans will be, that things haven't worked out."
Dean White and Bob Booker will take charge of the team for Saturday's game against Millwall and Tuesday's clash with Northampton.

Flo vil fortsette karrieren

Sunderland striker Healy flattered by Rangers interest
Sunderland striker David Healy admits he's flattered by interest from Rangers.
Healy has been linked with a move to SPL giants Rangers and while he is not dreaming of a move to Ibrox, he is flattered to be linked with the club.
"I've spoken to the manager a few times and he's reassured me that I'm part of his plans," he told Sky Sports News.
"I'll keep working. I still know where the goal is, as a striker you don't forget that and hopefully come the run in, come the important games, hopefully I'll be helping out with a few goals.
"People are aware I've disappointed disrupted by injuries, but it doesn't mean I want to leave Sunderland. It's never crossed my mind that I would go and play for Rangers.
"It's flattering at times to be linked with other clubs, obviously when I was at Fulham and wasn't playing. I'm a Sunderland player. It's a huge club with huge potential."

Oldham look into 'fight' reports
Oldham Athletic have confirmed reports of players fighting during a night out are to be investigated.
National newspaper reports have claimed manager John Sheridan was also involved during a club night at Belle Vue greyhound racing last week.
A club spokesman told BBC Radio Manchester some players were caught up in angry confrontations.
Chief executive Alan Hardy told the club website: "We cannot discount sacking in this respect."
He added: "The incidents which occurred last Tuesday are certainly disturbing and the board of directors are conducting a full investigation.
"If anyone is found to have been acting inappropriately, thus bringing the club into disrepute, then I would expect the strongest possible action to be taken."
Meanwhile, Sheridan was angry with his players after the weekend defeat at home to Colchester.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "Let them answer the questions. They're professional footballers, they get paid good money for it.
"I am not going to answer all the time. I am getting sick of answering for them and sticking up for them."  (BBC)

Time to give a damn about reviled Don Revie

They are Leeds. Dirty, dirty Leeds and Don Readies. Doyens of the dark arts and reviled by revisionists. Brian Clough went to Elland Road, dismantled the club with his unbridled ego and got a payoff that made him financially secure. Revie was damned, ostracised and forgotten.

It is time for Revie to be reclaimed and accepted into the pantheon of managerial greats. He should be up there with Clough and Shankly and Busby and Ferguson, but he has been written out of history as damaged goods. He is the ursine villain of

The Damned United, a gruff northerner bereft of Clough’s wit and charm. The ending of the film is gratuitous in its light and shade, telling us Clough went on to win the European Cup twice, while Revie failed at England and fled to the Middle East amid allegations of financial impropriety.

He also changed the face of football for ever. “The football we played from 1969 to 1974 was unbelievable,” Johnny Giles once told me. “Some of the matches we played, particularly at Leeds, well, I’ve never seen better football before or since.” Yet Revie and Leeds remain unloved and unforgiven. They are Leeds. Dirty Leeds. They cheated, maimed and hounded referees. Their manager offered bribes. He ran out on England, albeit that he was about to be pushed. Two and two makes 666.

There is some truth in the criticism, but it is a sophistic attack that lacks context.

Leeds may have been part-time purveyors of violence, but they were not alone. A seminal moment in the club’s history came in 1965. Revie had already performed a sooty black miracle by lifting Leeds from the cusp of the third division and near bankruptcy to second place in the top flight and the FA Cup Final. Then came the Inter-City Fairs Cup match against Torino in Turin. Bobby Collins, heartbeat of the side, was taken out by the right back. He broke his femur. The cynicism of the continental game was laid bare as Collins threw off a hospital blanket and proudly showed off the bolt through his leg. That early foray into Europe left indelible marks on both player and manager.

When I met Collins at his home several years ago, he was irritated at the choreographed cheating and endemic play-acting of the Premier League.

“I think we were harder but more honest,” he said. “It was just a case of having to suss out which players were the ones who were going to kick you into the stands. You’ve got to win and we played real hard. And no, I can’t say I was an angel, but I don’t apologise for that.”

Prejudice gives prominence to certain crimes. The beauty of Leeds’ football has been banished by their beastliness, but their critics pass off the systematic hounding of referees by Manchester United or the artful conning of referees by high-profile players as gamesmanship; it is a postscript to greatness not an epitaph.

Eddie Gray provided the most graphic context when he told me a story about Willie Bell, the Leeds full back. “He played for Scotland against Brazil and, when nobody was looking, Pelé stuck the nut on him. There was blood all over the place. He’d been headbutted by the great Pelé, but things like that happened.”

Giles, meanwhile, said that the selective editing was down to the North-South divide and the bias of the London media, but it went further. The hatred of Leeds will be refreshed by the film. They are Dirty Leeds, Don Readies and Billy Bremner, the smoking gun who bullied Kevin Keegan in the 1974 Charity Shield and smoked a post-coital fag afterwards. “You can’t put into words what Billy Bremner meant to football,” Sir Alex Ferguson said, but nobody would ever know.

Ferguson seems to have learnt much from Revie. When you heard of him trawling the streets and hauling Ryan Giggs out of a party at Lee Sharpe’s house, it was a throwback to Revie researching the backgrounds of players’ girlfriends. The results have also been maligned. Leeds won two championships under Revie, an FA Cup, a League Cup and two Fairs Cups. They were runners-up in the league on five occasions and lost five leading cup finals. They missed out on the big one, the European Cup, but it really was for champions then. But they are Leeds and they are chokers.

an insight into the qualities of Revie. “He brought a knowledge to the game which I don’t think anybody has ever come close to,” he said. “I played under Matt Busby who was an old-fashioned type of manager, whose method was to get good players in, believe in them and let them go out and play. But Matt was never on the training ground, whereas Don was out there every day. If we lost a goal on Saturday, he’d be there, working out what happened and who was at fault. And he’d put it right.”

He never put it right enough. Like many born into poverty Revie was motivated by a fear of returning there. There has been much anecdotal evidence of attempting to bribe opponents, as well as Richard Stott’s 315-page dossier delivered to the FA. Some Leeds players have denied it. Lorimer suggested that football was awash with illegal cash incentives. Bremner sued a Sunday paper and won. Gary Sprake blew the whistle and was cast out of the family.

Clough has been implicated in scandals himself and the High Court heard how he “likes a bung”, but his memory is not irreparably tainted. Three years ago, Mike Newell, then the Luton Town manager, said football was still full of dodgy dealings, but he had little support. Sven-Göran Eriksson told a fake sheikh he fancied quitting England for £5 million a year in the Premier League. He has been rehabilitated. Revie never has. And the manifold talents of his team have rarely been recognised as a result.

The Damned United has sparked an entire movement devoted to defending Clough, but nobody has come forward to speak up for Don Revie, the flawed genius. Twenty years after his death, it is time to acknowledge that he has been damned with faint praise for too long.

Westlake came through the ranks at Portman Road and made 125 appearances before joining Leeds in August 2006.

Constantine signs for Cheltenham Town

Former Leeds United striker Leon Constantine has signed for Cheltenham Town on loan from League One rivals Northampton Town.
The experienced target man will link up with the Robins squad on route to tomorrow's game at Huddersfield Town.
The Robins will be the 14th different club the 31-year-old has played for.
He started his career at non-league Edgware Town before moving to Millwall in September 2000.
After a succession of loan moves and a less than successful spell with Brentford, he moved to Southend in 2003.
He netted 25 goals for the Shrimpers during a good spell at Roots Hall, before signing for Peterborough.
After poor spells at the Posh and then Torquay he signed for Port Vale in time for the 2005/6 season, scoring 36 goals in two seasons.
After an injury disrupted spell at Leeds United he joined Oldham on loan, scoring twice in seven games, before joining Northampton in the summer.
So far he has scored three times in 33 appearances for the Cobblers.
