The Athletic rangerer alle lagenes summer transfer window, og vinneren er;

1) Leeds United

Leeds have taken a maverick approach to the window, in that they addressed some key areas of need at relatively sensible prices, and haven't lost anyone they will particularly miss.

It will never catch on.

James Trafford replacing a combination of Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri in goal is among the biggest single upgrades of any club this summer, Tarek Muharemovic already looks at home while Harry Wilson on a free should fit in nicely and Jean-Matteo Bahoya is a bit of a wild card, but could be pretty exciting.

Their willingness to loan out Willy Gnonto was mildly surprising, and they're potentially slightly light in terms of central defensive cover if they continue playing three at the back, but otherwise they look in solid shape.

Veldig overrasket over at Farke var ute etter Mudryk. 2 år ute og bare et lån var jo helt utenfor det vi driver med. 2 måneder til før han er på banen, og tidligst i form på nyåret. Godt vi ikke havna der.

Madryk-interessen var ...underlig. Greit nok at vi kunne (evt) hente en ekstra spiller i en annen posisjon om vi fikk ham inn. Men vi kunne altså ha fått en som ikke bidro i det hele tatt. Nå er han vel ute halve høsten allerede...

Nå har vi i det minste en spennende spiller med potensiale - om han får det ut vet vi jo ikke ennå.

It felt surprising you needed to sell Pascal (Struijk) to meet the PSR (profit and sustainability rules) limit...

I was a bit surprised at how confident some people were that we were far clearer (on) PSR last summer because we said back in September we were unequivocally maxed out. You never quite know where you end up on PSR or SCR until the season's over because your financials are constantly evolving.

I was pretty confident coming into the year we'd have to sell some guys in June. Frankly, it was the cup run, the 14th-place finish, and doing pretty minimal work in January that kept it to being just one player.

Last August, we were prepared for it to be two if it had to be because the goal was to go as hard as you have to go to build the best possible squad to survive. That was a risk we took on last summer.

We knew that was going to be a possible issue in June, depending on the outcome of the season, and so Pascal was the solution for that. Thankfully, it's just one player, not more than one.

Why were some players loaned out when a permanent exit seemed possible?

We can't rule out any players on loan coming back to be part of the squad. Some of those loans are what I'll call "featuring loans", as those players could go and play more elsewhere and get minutes, to get themselves either a move elsewhere or to come back here having played more.

Stepping back a bit more broadly on the topic of selling, it is a lot harder than it gets credit for. This is especially true in our current position as a promoted team, when you're selling players who either helped you get out of the Championship, were added in our first year in the Premier League, or are from our previous stint in the Premier League.

The buying market for those players is quite narrow, covering teams at the very top of the Championship, at the bottom of the Premier League, and maybe a handful of teams in Europe. In general, if you look across the league, selling is getting harder and harder because the price tag of players looking to leave England is now a price tag most teams in Europe can't pay, whereas 20 years ago that wasn't the case.

You're seeing the Premier League pulling beyond the middle market or even upper middle market in Spain, Italy, France, even Germany to some extent. I would rate our summer of getting players out as a relative success.

Certainly, we'd like permanents in some cases, more than loans. But even with the loans, some obligations are pretty likely to trigger. In general, Adam and Andrew Taylor (loans manager) did a great job of getting players into solutions that work for us and for them.

That's the last and most key part of it: selling is not just finding a team that wants your players. If the players don't also want to go there, we need to be mindful of that. We have to find the overlap of a team that wants your player, a team the player wants to leave the Premier League to join, offering at a price the team is willing to pay and a price we think is appropriate.

Finding that intersection gets pretty tight and was a ton of work. There was probably as much work on that as the inbounds, frankly.

What was the reality of the Shea Charles situation?

We had our overall squad-building goals, we had our financial parameters, and we had a view on where we could fit the player in terms of the sacrifices or compromises elsewhere that have to happen because of him.

At some point, you hit a point where it felt like it's not the right thing for us to do, and so you walk away from that. Again, that was more of a market opportunity. There weren't a lot of players in midfield we felt had the right age, profile, and fit to go after.

When we didn't get that one, it wasn't an urgent need to go and sign a midfielder because our midfield is quite strong, actually. It was worth looking into, and we did, and then at some point it felt like it was no longer the right value for us, and the best move was to have the discipline to walk away.
