Skipper bemoans 'stupid' blunders
Leeds skipper Kevin Nicholls has warned his team-mates they must stop making "stupid mistakes" if they are to avoid relegation this season.

The Whites, who are four points adrift of safety, made a number of defensive mistakes during their 3-1 FA Cup defeat to West Brom last weekend.

But Nicholls insists the mistakes can easily be rectified and are not due to poor team morale.

"Fans can get mixed signals because what comes out of Thorp Arch is a bubbly feeling among the players but then we go away and lose 3-1 at West Bromwich Albion," he told the club's official website.

"That does not mean that team spirit is bad, that was down to individual errors and not defending properly, which we are trying to stop.

"We have to cut out the stupid mistakes and then we will not be far away."

Dennis Wise admitted Leeds paid the price for some sloppy defending as they crashed out of the FA Cup to West Brom.

"We had opportunities to score but we didn't defend as well as they did, they finished off chances, and unfortunately we didn't," said Wise.

"I think we're gradually improving and I can't argue with the way they performed in the second half, but the first-half display let us down.

"Looking at the way they performed, we're starting to get a good team and adding one or two more will make it a very good team.

"When I say a good team I mean a good team going forward, there's a couple of things we need to address to make us more solid.

"Overall, I'm disappointed with the way we defended. We had chances to make it 3-3 or 4-3 but we never got close enough to them with our defending.

Nicholls and his team-mates were left kicking their heels over the weekend after their game at Birmingham was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and both Southend and Hull took full advantage.

Bottom club Southend secured their first away league win of the season - 1-0 at Cardiff - to move level on points with Leeds, while two late goals saw Hull beat QPR 2-1 to open up a six-pont gap between them and their Yorkshire rivals.

"At this moment it doesn't bother me what other teams do," said Nicholls. "All that matters is Leeds United.

"If we win football matches we're going to stay up. We've got to play those teams around us and it's no good relying on others.

"We're working hard to get things right and if we can string some wins together we can soon move away from trouble."
