Milwall - The New Den

The New Den.

THE New Den's claim to fame is that it became the first all-seater stadium to be built in the wake of Lord Justice Taylor's report into the Hillsborough disaster.

Name: The New Den
Capacity: 20,146
Record Attendance: 20,093 v Arsenal in January 1994
Distance from Elland Road: 205 miles
Year ground opened: 1993
United's last visit: November 26, 2005

Until 1993, Millwall's former home â€" The Den â€" had been one of the most intimidating venues in the country, a mass of open terracing in the New Cross area of London and described by Eamonn Dunphy, their former midfielder, as "one of our biggest assets".
"The away-team dressing room is like a dungeon," recalled Dunphy. "No light, no window. The bathrooms are horrible.
"Then you get out there to face them, the Lions. And they just come storming at you and most sides jack it in. When you have been there a little time though, you grow to love it. It's one of our biggest assets."
Many of Millwall's supporters were deeply unhappy about the club's decision to relocate to a site in Bermondsey, half-a-mile up the road, but the move made financial sense. 'Dirty Den', as the press were fond of calling the New Cross site, was replaced with an all-seater venue capable of holding 20,146 supporters, and a visit to Millwall is no longer the threatening experience it used to be. The ground, which cost around £16m to build and became MIllwall's sixth home, was designed to support crowd management, and quickly solved the policing nightmare that The Den had become. A membership scheme was introduced by then chairman Theo Paphitis â€" a progressive attempt to fight hooliganism â€" but crowds have consistently fallen a long way short of the stadium's capacity. Away supporters are usually housed in the North Stand at one end of the ground, though most visiting clubs are limited to seats in the upper tier.
However, the entire stand can hold around 4,000 spectators, and United will jump on that allocation if it is offered their way. Whether the police would wish for such a crowd of Leeds supporters to descend on Millwall is another matter. The most popular method of travel to the New Den still tends to be by official club transport. Those who drive to the ground will find the odd parking space in nearby estates, while Bermondsey train station lies a few minutes' walk from the New Den. On occasion, the Metropolitan Police have been known to arrange a 'football special' if away supporters arrive en masse at London Bridge tube station.

Millwall v Leeds United hooliganism warning from Met

The Metropoliitan Police have announced plans to try and avoid a repeat of clashes which marred Millwall's visit to Leeds United's Elland Road earlier this season.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police Service said it was working closely with Millwall Football Club and British Transport Police to ensure the April 19 fixture at Millwall's New Den is safe and trouble-free for visiting fans.

TO SEE VIDEO OF THE CLASHES WHICH OCCURRED AT ELLAND ROAD: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/VIDEO-Fans-clash-with-police.3422217.jp

Football yobs repeatedly clashed with police in ugly scenes before and after Leeds United's home game with Millwall in October.
Trouble flared as three busloads of away fans pulled up near the Billy Bremner statue outside Elland Road.
Millwall hooligans on board the double deckers smashed windows and kicked open doors in a bid to goad hundreds of watching Leeds fans into a confrontation.
Windows and doors on the buses were put through by yobs on board as they tried to goad watching Leeds fans into confrontation.
Mounted police responded by charging at some of the United followers, forcing them away from the buses.
In a statement, the MPS said: "MPS officers from across London, supported by colleagues from BTP, will be at the Millwall ground and throughout London for the event, providing a robust high-visibility presence to reassure fans and the local community, and employing a range of tactics to identify and target troublemakers.
"Whilst there is no specific intelligence to suggest that acts of organised disorder are planned, we remain committed to ensuring The Den remains a safe place for all to watch football.
"We encourage both Millwall and Leeds Utd fans to work with us to create a pleasant and safe atmosphere to allow everyone to enjoy the day.
"We remind Leeds Utd supporters that they will not be able to purchase tickets on the day of the match; we therefore advise anyone without tickets not to travel to the game."
Superintendent Harrington of the Metropolitan Police Service added: "Our overall aim is to facilitate law-abiding fans' travel to and from the match and create a safe environment for them to enjoy the game itself. We've been working closely with the clubs and other agencies involved to make sure this happens.
"We want to send a clear message to fans that we will police match day fairly but firmly to ensure the game passes without incident and allow true football fans to enjoy the day.
"Our message to people planning to attend is simple; if you're coming to enjoy the game safely and legally, we're here to help you do that; if you plan to cause trouble you will find your efforts thwarted."

Lions change Leeds ticket arrangements

MILLWALL have opted not to sell tickets on the day of next Saturday's home meeting with Leeds United on police advice.
October's trip to Elland Road was marred by crowd disturbances when both sets of fans clashed and the Lions are acting to avoid any repeat.
A club spokesman confirmed: "Following consultation with police and in the interests of our local community, it has been decided tickets for the Millwall v Leeds fixture on April 19 will not be on sale on the day of the game.
"In order to assist eligible Millwall supporters to purchase tickets for this match, the Millwall ticket office will be open from 10am to 2pm this Saturday and will remain open until 7pm next Thursday and Friday."
Tickets may be purchased by season ticket holders for personal guests, Millwall Supporters' Club members and fans with a recent purchase history of attending home games this season.
Tickets may be purchased by post or in person from the Millwall ticket office, but are not available through Ticketmaster.
Meanwhile, Millwall season ticket holders are reminded the price freeze offer for purchasing season tickets for next season ends at 5pm tomorrow (April 11).

Millwall på The New Den er aldri enkelt...

POOL SUNK BY SIMPSON WINNER
Millwall's League One survival battle was given a massive boost with a battling 1-0 win at Hartlepool.
The visitors were rewarded for a bright start when they took the lead on 11 minutes, Jay Simpson unchallenged as he flicked a pass from Jem Karacan into the corner of the net from six yards.
And it should have been 2-0 three minutes later when Millwall again opened up the slow home defence, but this time Simpson had time and more space and his shot went straight into the arms of keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.
Hartlepool had an Andy Monkhouse goal disallowed for offside on the half-hour as they tried to get back into the game.
However just before half-time David Martin hammered a 20-yard shot against the crossbar to again nearly double the visitors lead.
There was more from the home team in the second half, but they snatched at their chances and Joel Porter headed over, Antony Sweeney's weak shot was easily saved by Rhys Evans and Willie Boland's low 20-yard effort was a yard wide.

Millwall trenger poeng for å sikre plassen.
