Kamp 3/5:

Carlisle United 1 Bournemouth 1

Substitute Brett Pitman's equaliser wasn't enough to save Bournemouth from relegation as Carlisle United missed out on the second promotion spot after an exciting final day.
Pitman netted just eight minutes after coming on for Darren Anderton but, after six wins in a row, the south coast side looked short of energy and didn't seriously threaten to grab a late winner.
A cautious opening half came as little surprise given what was at stake for both sides and neither keeper was seriously tested until the 27th minute.
Max-Alain Gradel cut in from the right wing and unleashed a 25-yard drive that flicked off Carlisle defender Darren Campion.
Home keeper Keiren Westwood had already dived in the opposite direction and could only watch on as the ball thundered against the underside of the bar before being cleared.
The hosts finally applied some pressure after the break and 17-year-old Gary Madine, who was making his full debut, proved a handful for the Bournemouth defence.
The pressure finally told on 57 minutes when Scott Dobie slammed in a rebound after Grant Smith's header struck the foot of the post.
But the lead didn't last long as Bournemouth gave themselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation 11 minutes later.
Sam Vokes headed on a long free-kick from Shaun Cooper and Pitman nudged ahead of two defenders to stab the ball past Westwood.
But with Cheltenham leading against Doncaster, the visitors knew that a winner might not be enough for them and after a long season their tired legs couldn't summon another clear-cut chance.
Pitman and fellow substitutes Marvin Bartley both should have done better when well placed, before Carlisle winger Simon Hackney lashed wildly over in the dying seconds as Bournemouth poured forward.

Carlisle Utd:
1 Westwood, 22 Campion, 31 Horwood, 15 Arnison, 8 Lumsdon, 30 Smith G **, 6 Murphy, 28 Madine *, 11 Dobie, 9 Graham ***, 18 Hackney.
Subs: 20 Howarth, 3 Aranalde, 15 Taylor * (72), 4 Bridge-Wilkinson ** (79), 10 Carlton *** (85).

McDonald: Promotion is all that matters

Neil McDonald

Justified though he would be to carry an unpleasant taste in his mouth, it will be without bitterness that Neil McDonald returns to Brunton Park next week.
McDonald has an intricate knowledge of Carlisle United's home, but nine months have elapsed since he last set foot in a stadium which was once his place of work. It is only through a coincidental conclusion to the League One season that his exile will be broken on May 15.
Ruthlessly evicted from Brunton Park in August, McDonald has good reason to view Carlisle United â€" and, more particularly, the club's administration â€" with an air of resentment.
But revenge? The 42-year-old would like to think he is more professional than that.
"I'm one member of the coaching team at Leeds United and a small part of a bigger picture," he said. "That's what it comes down to."
McDonald, however, would not be alone in feeling a degree of satisfaction were his current employers to eliminate from League One's play-offs the club who lost faith in his managerial ability without patience and, apparently, without sense.
His was the type of dismissal over which the League Managers' Association routinely have kittens.
Carlisle sacked McDonald on August 13, no more than two days after their season began with a 1-1 draw at Walsall.
The timing of the club's decision was bizarre â€" to the LMA, scandalous would have seemed a more appropriate word â€" but it was peculiar on a number of different levels.
Three days earlier, Carlisle had allowed McDonald to invest £140,000 in Joe Garner, a striker from Blackburn Rovers who became their record signing. At the end of the previous season, the Cumbrian club had finished eighth in League One, their highest finish for some 20 years.
McDonald saw progress, as many others did. Carlisle's owner, Fred Story, saw August 13 as the time for change.
"I can't give you a reason for what happened because there isn't one," McDonald said. "It was simply down to one man making a decision â€" a decision I didn't agree with.
"The way I saw it, there were three things to judge me on â€" our style of play and our results, the crowds we pulled in and the job I did on the recruitment side.
"We finished eighth in the league, which was the club's highest finish for years, and the attendances last year were good.
"You'd also have to say that a lot of the players who've contributed to their excellent season were brought in by me.
"I never thought I'd get sacked for doing things right. I don't believe I deserved that and I haven't been back to the club since.
"But, at the same time, I'd never have thought a season that started as badly as this one did would be finishing like it is â€" with me at a club who are three games away from winning promotion.
I'm happy about that."
United's play-off path was destined to cross with that of Doncaster Rovers until Tresor Kandol's 89th minute goal saw Leeds complete their season with a 2-1 victory over Gillingham at Elland Road on Saturday.
The effect of Kandol's goal was to shunt Gary McAllister's squad into fifth position, above Southend United on goal difference, and pair them with the one semi-finalist whose form is not what it should be.
Since the beginning of April, Carlisle have grasped only five points from the 21 on offer to them.
Their home record, however, is the most imposing in the division and their squad has coped admirably with the pace of the season.
McDonald knows their weaknesses but also understands their strengths. He was, as he claims, responsible for signing several of their key players, among them Danny Graham and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson.
"Their results would suggest that they're struggling a touch at the moment," said McDonald. "But I wouldn't read too much into that. There's nothing like a semi-final or a final to pick you up again.
"We've already beaten them at Elland Road but they've got an excellent home record. And every manager and player will tell you that Brunton Park is a difficult place to win.
"For one thing, it's a long journey for most teams to get there. And the atmosphere inside the ground is tight and intimidating. The club's home form is obviously one of their main strengths.
"I fancied them to do well because the pre-season I had with them was good and our plans were in place.
"What I didn't expect was to be called in on the Monday morning after a 1-1 draw at Walsall and told I was being sacked.
"To be honest, I had no idea what lay ahead of me at that point."
McDonald's response was to throw himself into every opportunity presented to him.
He travelled to Sweden to manage Östersunds FK and soon became Peter Jackson's assistant manager at Lincoln City.
After three months at Sincil Bank, the call came from Gary McAllister who wanted McDonald to work as his first-team coach at Leeds. His response was immediate and positive.
At the end of a roundabout path through Scandinavia and Lincolnshire, McDonald may still be able to celebrate the League One promotion he had quietly planned to achieve at the start of this season.
"The satisfaction I'd gain from doing that would be huge," said McDonald. "When the sack comes your way, you can't be sure what the future holds or how quickly you'll be able to get back into the game.
"We're three games away from winning promotion at Leeds and I've only been a small part of that. The players are due most of the credit, but it would be a fantastic achievement for everyone, myself included.
"If we beat Carlisle over two legs then I'll be delighted.
"It would be very pleasing for me personally, but the semi-final isn't about revenge or anything like that.
It's about pushing Leeds United over the finishing line, whoever's in our way."

Lumsdon: Bring on United

Carlisle United captain Chris Lumsdon has rejected claims that the Cumbrian club are running out of steam as they prepare to meet Leeds United in the League One play-offs.
Carlisle earned themselves a semi-final against Leeds with a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, a result which extended the noticeable dip in form which has gripped John Ward's side during the final month of the season.
A return of only win from eight games curbed Carlisle's chance of automatic promotion and the club will travel to Elland Road for the first leg of their play-off semi-final next Monday, looking for their first away victory since March 22.
The Brunton Park club boast League One's strongest home record, but they have been beaten nine times on the road this season and have won only six of their 23 away fixtures.
But Lumsdon said: "When people write us off, that's when we're at our strongest â€" so let them write us off.
"Leeds are a good team with good players but we matched them twice this season. Bring it on.
"We might not be the best players in the league, but you won't find a team with better spirit or determination to do it for each other."
Ward claimed that his team will occupy the position of underdogs next week and vowed to keep his pre-match comments to a minimum ahead of Monday's first leg in Yorkshire.
Ward said: "We go in there as the underdogs and we'll probably let them do the bit of chit-chat that they want to do.
"We'll try and beat them over two games. There'll be two full houses and everybody's going to be excited about it."
Leeds attracted a crowd of over 38,000 to last weekend's 2-1 victory over Gillingham and a similar attendance is anticipated for the opening clash with Carlisle.
Gillingham's visit brought in a total of 38,256 supporters â€" the biggest Football League crowd of the season and the highest turn-out seen for a competitive football fixture at Elland Road for four years.
United midfielder David Prutton said: "It does make a hell of a difference. It's encouraging after the way that the season's gone â€" with the ups and the downs â€" that they're here and they're here in numbers."

United fans face ticket scramble

Leeds United fans are facing a scramble for tickets after the club were offered an allocation of just 1,600 for the second leg of their play-off semi-final against Carlisle United.
Leeds have received confirmation that a total of 1,637 tickets will be made available to them for the game at Brunton Park on Thursday, May 15 â€" around half the number allocated for their League One match in Cumbria at the start of November.
United's fans will be contained in the Waterworks End on the advice of Cumbria Police, who recommended that Leeds receive the lowest allocation allowed under Football League rules in an attempt to avoid a repeat of crowd problems seen during United's 3-1 defeat at Carlisle earlier in the season.
Leeds received 3,249 tickets for their trip to Brunton Park on November 3 and helped to generate Carlisle's biggest home gate for three decades, but their allowance has been slashed for next week's semi-final second leg.
The Football League's regulations stipulate that visiting clubs must be offered at least 10 per cent of a stadium's capacity or 2,000 tickets, whichever is lower, and Brunton Park is capable of holding around 16,600 fans. Leeds have provided Carlisle with exactly 2,000 seats for the first leg at Elland Road next Monday.
United will begin accepting applications for tickets for the second leg tomorrow morning, but club chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "We're disappointed with the allocation, as a lot of our supporters will be.
"It's something we have no control over and the allocation adheres to the Football League's rules.
"In a way, that's the problem with having such a big away support in a division where the capacities of the stadiums are fairly small.
"Unfortunately, a number of fans are going to miss out."
Tickets sales for United's home leg are already approaching 20,000, with the club hopeful of replicating the attendance of 38,256 generated for Saturday's 2-1 victory over Gillingham at Elland Road.
Manager Gary McAllister said: "I was looking through the league tables and looking at the teams who would be capable of pulling in 38,000 against Gillingham. I didn't pick out many. "I've got to appeal to all the people who were here to buy a ticket for Monday. It'll be a great atmosphere again."
Referees' chief Keith Hackett claims diving is no longer a "major problem" in the Premier League.
"Of course it is a controversial issue but it's under control and at present I don't see it as a major problem in our game and credit must go to the managers and players for that," he said.
Analysis on his organisation's website showed only two instances of referees being duped across 100 top-flight games this term. However, 18 players have been cautioned for simulation this season compared to eight in 2006-07.

Leeds will win promotion

Leeds United will be the team winning promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs - according to Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling.
The Yorkshire outfit ended the season in fifth place on 76 points, despite having to overcome a 15-point deduction at the start of the campaign, and Ling believes Gary McAllister's men can emerge victorious in the knock-outs.
Southend and Doncaster meet in the first play-off semi final on Friday, with Leeds facing Carlisle at Elland Road on Monday. Ling said: "Leeds are the team entering the League One play-offs in the best form â€" and they are my tip to join Swansea and Nottingham Forest in the Championship next season.
"Stick their 15 points back on and Gary McAllister's side would be 11 points superior to Doncaster and Carlisle, who will be smarting after they way their seasons ended. In fact, I'd take Southend to beat Donny in the other semi final.
"I just feel that Leeds and Southend will be in better heart than the other two sides and the semi finals come around very quickly. I'm delighted for Colin Calderwood and Forest. Colin's one of my biggest mates in the game and the flak he's taken over the last couple of seasons would have tested anyone to the limit."
Meanwhile, Carlisle manager John Ward says he is relishing the prospect of two play-off matches against Leeds. "It's a tremendous achievement for a club like ours to be playing Leeds United in the play-offs. We will go there as underdogs and we'll probably let them do their little bit of chit-chat that they want do," he said.
"We'll just try to beat them over the two legs. There will be two full houses and everyone is really excited about it."

Dobie: Cumbrians can thwart Leeds

Scott Dobie has urged his Carlisle team-mates to defy their underdog status and overcome Leeds to book their place in the play-off final.
In-form Dobie's second-half strike was not enough to seal automatic promotion for the Cumbrians as they drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on the final day of the season, but the former Nottingham Forest striker insists they must regroup if they are to achieve their dream of promotion.
"If we dwell on our recent results we're going to get left behind and a big opportunity will have passed us by," Dobie told the News and Star.
"I've heard the play-offs are the best way to go up, but I can also imagine it being pretty bitter if you get to the final and you don't go up.
"Leeds will be favourites, but it's been like that all season. When you watch the league reviews on TV, it's all been Leeds and Forest. Carlisle hardly got a mention, even when we were second for weeks on end.
"That's just the way it is. All we can do is show what we can do on the day and give ourselves the best opportunity."

Hvilke regler gjelder egentelig i playoff-kampene?

Tenkt tilfelle 2:
Leeds Carlisle 1-1 90 min, ingen ekstraomganger
Carlisle-Leeds 2-2 90 min, deretter spilles ekstraomganger og evt. straffespark på Brunton Park.

Tenkt tilfelle 3:

Striker Anthony Elding is relishing the chance to gain revenge on Carlisle United for his previous Play-Off heartbreak.

Anthony will be one of a number of survivors from Carlisle's last appearance in the Play-Offs on show at Elland Road on Monday night for the League One Play-Off semi-final first leg.

While the likes of current Carlisle stars Danny Livesey, Peter Murphy, and Chris Lumsdon were celebrating a Play-Off victory for the Cumbrians in 2005, Anthony was a member of the Stevenage side which suffered a 1-0 defeat and missed out on promotion to the Football League.

"I was involved in the Play-Offs at Stevenage," recalled Anthony.

"We beat Hereford over two legs and drew Carlisle in the final who beat us. They went up that season, went through League Two and are now where they are. They've gone on from there and done fantastic.

"For me the memories of aren't great, and this is a fantastic chance for us. It would be nice to have some sort of revenge, but its not about any individual it's about us all."

Andrew Hughes is relishing the prospect of another Elland Road full-house next week.

Tickets went on general sale on Wednesday morning for the League One Play-Off semi-final first leg against Carlisle United - and the sold out signs are likely to be in place yet again.

Over 38,000 watched the final league game of the season, against Gillingham last weekend, and midfielder Hughesy was almost speechless when asked about the atmosphere inside Elland Road.

"It was a great spectacle," said Andrew. "It takes your breath away when it's like that. I was honoured to be on the pitch in front of those fans, but that is Leeds United football club.

"There's no experience like that. I've been at different clubs and experienced different fans, but you can't find the words to describe what that was like on Saturday.

"We need to do them proud now and do it for ourselves."

With the dust now settled on the league programme attentions are turning towards the two-legged semi-final against the Cumbrians. The two sides meet at Elland Road on Monday May 12 and lock horns at Carlisle on Thursday May 15.

"They have a fantastic home record and we have to go there and try and get a result," said Hughesy.

"But what an atmosphere it's going to be here first. It should be awesome.

"That's what football is about - excitement and passion. I'm really looking forward to it, but having said that, I've looked forward to every game since the Tranmere game. I just love being at the club.

"I've still got to prove myself to the club and to the fans. Hopefully they'll say I've done okay to that end so far, but we've got to, got to, get this club up now."

Tickets for the home leg against Carlisle United are now on general sale...
