Have your say!

Plans have been put forward in a bid to secure the future of Leeds United Ladies football team.

The Yorkshire Evening Post revealed yesterday (Thursday) that the team are facing an uncertain future amid claims they can no longer use the Whites brand.

The Leeds United Foundation, who have supported the club financially for the last four years, said it was with “regret” that they can no longer back the team.

Fans now look set to put a proposal before Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino on Tuesday in a bid to secure the ladies team’s future.

Supporters have also contacted the FA National Women’s Premier League to postpone a notice to withdraw the team, which was formed in 1989, from the competition.

Gary Cooper, who will stand down as chairman of Leeds United Supporters’ Trust this autumn, said he hopes the club will be allowed to continue to use the same name.

He said: “We are hoping that we will get a chance to speak to Massimo on Tuesday.

“All of the players, parents, sponsors and people involved want to keep this going and there is no reason why it can’t.

“We want to carry on the proud tradition of the Leeds United family.

“Historically the Ladies have been one of the biggest clubs in women’s football.”

The Foundation is the charitable arm of its parent football club Leeds United.

James McAulay, chairman of the Foundation, said yesterday: “It is with regret that the Trustees of the Leeds United Foundation have been forced to take the decision that they can no longer support the provision of the Leeds United Ladies team.

“Last week the Foundation were informed by Leeds United that the ladies team were no longer able to use the Leeds United name or brand.

“The Foundation has been supporting the provision of the Leeds United Ladies since 2010.

“Without the Leeds United name and brand the continuation of the ladies team under the Foundation is regrettably not sustainable.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved with Leeds United Ladies, past and present, for their support over many years.”

The Yorkshire Evening Post revealed that the Leeds United Ladies team was on the brink of collapse in 2007 because of funding issues.

Leeds United removed their funding of the team in 2005 but they continued under sponsorship arrangements until 2010 when the Foundation stepped in.

Steve it costs as little as £25k per annum to fund the ladies team, currently non of that cost comes from LUFC funds but the foundation who have been the umbrella body do cost LUFC money and I think this is were the problem lies as far as LUFC see it. Quite rightly under MC the club is looking to cut its cloth, that's right to do I am sure but the ladies team doesn't have to fall victim to that if the club is willing to allow an independent group of stakeholders who don't burden LUFC with any cost implication at all the opportunity to continue to use the name 'Leeds United'. We hope to discuss those proposals with Massimo on Tuesday. The FA and WRCFA have been brilliant and have postponed the foundations application to withdraw Leeds United Ladies from the league.

Det er kanskje håp for damene. Navnet er viktig for dem.

Cellino har talt:  Damelag får være damelag, men uten The Leeds United Brand!

Leeds United Ladies forced to rebrand
JULY 22, 2014 AT 2:40 PMADMIN1 COMMENT

Leeds United Ladies.
Leeds United Ladies are set to be re launched tonight as Leeds Ladies after Leeds United club owner Massimo Cellino withdrew support.

It was feared the city’s leading female football team, set up in 1989, might fold after the Italian businessman took over in April and hinted he did not want the Ladies to use United branding.

Chairman of Leeds United Supporters’ Trust, Gary Cooper said: “We’ve been waiting for a decision for weeks. I spoke to Massimo back in May and he told me he wasn’t particularly interested in the women’s team.”

Leeds United Ladies have been funded by the Leeds United Foundation- the charitable arm of the club â€" who provided an annual £25,000 towards running costs.

Alan Scorfield, member of the Leeds United Foundation, said he didn’t want to comment on why the foundation has withdrawn support.

He said: “Leeds Ladies is a brand new club and it has nothing to do with us.”

Unable to use the branding and badges of Leeds United AFC, Leeds United Ladies will now continue as Leeds Ladies FC and have created their own branding but said they are keen to keep the traditions of the Yorkshire football club alive.

Mr Cooper said: “This meeting tonight ensures that the traditions and essence of Leeds United will live on through us and allow the City of Leeds to have a female team that are steeped in the traditions of the club.”

Leeds United Ladies were a former Women’s Premier League team but now find themselves starting life as a new brand in Division One.

Gary Cooper said he still thinks it is possible for them to go all the way to the Women’s Super League, the highest competitive level in the women’s game in England, if the right structure and support is put in place.

He added: “It won’t be easy, but it is certainly possible. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Leeds United said they did not wish to comment.

Proud to support Leeds Ladies FC
18 Aug 2014 07:55am, by Shields53

Marching on Together is proud to sponsor Leeds Ladies FC and player/assistant manager Carey 'Kez' Huegett for the 2014/2015 season. Leeds Ladies kick-off the new season this weekend having been through a turbulent off-season.

The club was founded as Leeds United Ladies FC in 1989 and a proud history saw them reach FA Women’s Cup and FA WPL Cup finals and achie a highest Women’s Premier League finish of 3rd place.

Financial difficulties have plagued the team in the past and Ken Bates removed the financial backing of LUFC shortly after his takeover in 2005. In 2007 Leeds Metropolitan University took over sponsorship and the team was renamed Leeds Carnegie Ladies but in 2010 they removed their support preventing the team joining the Women’s Super League. The Leeds United Foundation took over responsibility for the team and they played in the Women’s Premier League, once again under the name of Leeds United Ladies. Another setback came in 2012 when their bid to join the new Women’s Super League 2 was rejected and as a result manager Rick Passmore and many of the squad left.

In the 2013/2014 season Leeds played in the Women’s Premier League Northern but after a bright start finished bottom and were relegated. To compound issues during the summer LUFC decided to withdraw naming and branding rights and after disagreements over ‘governance’ the Leeds United Foundation took the decision to disband the ladies team. The desire to keep ladies football going in Leeds was strong and the Leeds Ladies supporters club rallied to the cause. After much hard work over the summer months the team has re-launched under the new name Leeds Ladies FC with a new badge and new kit. Discussions with the FA, the West Riding County FA and representatives of the FAWPL enabled the new team to retain the affiliations and take up their rightful place in the FA Women's Premier League Division One this season.

The response from the Leeds United community to the cause has been excellent with blogs, fan groups and organisations sponsoring players for the coming season. Leeds bands Cadillac Jukebox and Kaiser Chiefs as well as Leeds United players past and present including Dom Matteo and Noel Hunt have also shown their support by sponsoring players. The ladies still need all the support they can get though and there are player and corporate sponsorships available, details can be found on the clubs website or by emailing leedsladiesfc@mail.com.

So after a hectic summer off the field Leeds Ladies can finally let the football do the talking when they play their first game of the season at home to Stockport County on Sunday 24th August at 2pm. Home games will be played this season at Knaresborough Town’s Manse Lane ground. The phoenix has risen and manager Jak Oldroyd along with assistant manager Carey Huegett will lead the girls in their fight to get back to where they belong at the top of women’s football stirred by the support shown for them in adversity over the past few weeks.

Two more players signed for Leeds United Ladies.

Leeds United Ladies have made two more major signings just a few weeks into their 2018/19 campaign.

The first-team squad are currently unbeaten having played three games so far during the new season.

They have played two games in the FA Women's Premier League Division One North league, winning 4-0 against Crewe Alexandra in the opening fixture and drawing 1-1 with Burnley.

This weekend they took part in the FA Women’s Premier League Cup where they faced Sporting Khalsa, winning the match 2-1.

The two new additions to the squad will add both depth and quality as the team aim to keep their unbeaten run going, with the main aim for the season to achieve promotion.

A warm welcome to Sophie Stamp and Oda Sperre Tennfjord...
