BANTAMS CONTINUE UNBEATEN STREAK

Stuart McCall's Bradford side made it three wins in as many games in League Two with a ruthless 2-0 win over Rochdale at Valley Parade.
First-half goals from Michael Boulding and Peter Thorne were enough to sink Dale, who went close in the opening stages through Omar Daley and Keiran Toner.
But it was the Bantams who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. A cross from Thorne on the right wing was brilliantly finished off by his strike partner Boulding, who headed home with ease from six yards out.
The game then opened up with chances for both sides. Rory McCardle heading over from a Adam Rundle corner for Dale, while Lee Bullock volleyed just wide for the Bantams and Thorne flashed a header inches past the post.
Thorne, Bradford's runaway leading scorer, did manage to get on the scoresheet just after the half-hour as he converted an inswinging free-kick from Paul McClaren to take his tally for the season to five.
Dale's chances were limited and Bradford maintained their 100% winning record with comparative ease.

Her er siste nytt før morgendagens oppgjør i Johnstone’s Paint Trophy mot Bradford City på Elland Road kl. 20. 45.

Lokalrivalen kommer til Leeds for første gang på nærmere åtte år, det forventes nær 20 000 tilskuere på Elland Road og Gary McAllister ser frem til sin første kamp i turneringen.

- Det vil bli en bra kamp og vi ser frem til den. Det hadde vært bedre å møttes på et høyere nivå, men Bradford vil ut av sin divisjon og vi vil ut av vår, sier McAllister til Leeds Uniteds offisielle nettside.

- Folk fra utsiden ser på denne turneringen, særlig klubber fra de to øverste divisjonene som ikke er med selv. Og når du ser kampoppsettet så er jo dette et stort Yorkshire-derby, fortsatter McAllister.

Leeds v Bradford preview

Leeds entertains local rivals Bradford City in the first round of the Johnstones Paint Trophy on Tuesday night at Elland Road.
It will be the first time the two clubs have met in a competitive match since Leeds beat Bradford 6-1 in the 2000/2001 season.
The close proximity between the two clubs should ensure a good crowd for the game in a competition that usually struggles to raise any interest until the latter rounds.
Leeds will hope to get back to winning ways after dropping another two points at Elland Road at the weekend in a 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers.
Bradford lost their first League game of the season on Saturday when going down 3-2 at Aldershot.

Leeds
Alan Sheehan could return to the team after recovering from injury, Paul Telfer could also been involved after recovering from injury.
Leeds have made quite a few changes to the team during the last three games so no one can be sure what side Mcallister will put out.

Bradford
Matthew Clarke was replaced in the first half on Saturday and is likely to be replaced in the team by Mark Bower.
Club captain Graeme Lee suffered a head injury in the same game but should be ok to play against Leeds.

Sheehan back for Bantams clash

Leeds boss Gary McAllister should have defender Alan Sheehan available once again for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Bradford.
Sheehan has missed the last two games after suffering concussion in the draw with Yeovil, but is expected to return to the squad to face Stuart McCall's side in the first-round match.
Veteran defender Paul Telfer was absent from the 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers on Saturday after picking up a knock and it is likely he will return to the squad.
McAllister has a selection dilemma in goal as he decides whether to keep faith with David Lucas or restore regular number one Casper Ankergren to the side.
Lucas kept hs place in the side on Saturday after keeping a clean sheet in the Carling Cup win over Crystal Palace, but McAllister may opt for Ankergren again.

YEP's chief football writer Phil Hay takes a close look at Bradford City ahead of tonight's Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash

The Gaffer
Stuart McCall. An incredibly popular managerial appointment at Valley Parade before the start of last season, and no wonder.
Born in Leeds, McCall began his playing career with Bradford and returned to the club again in 1998 after spells with Everton and Rangers, and he was a unanimous choice among City's supporters as the long-term replacement for Colin Todd.
Bradford's board fulfilled that wish by persuading McCall to move from his role as assistant boss of Sheffield United and take up his first full managerial job at Valley Parade.
McCall aimed for promotion last season and fell well short of that target, but City look better equipped to secure a place in League One at the end of his second year as boss.

The Danger
Peter Thorne. A striker with vast experience and who, over the course of his career, has cost more than £2million in combined transfer fees, Thorne is the most obvious threat to Leeds tonight.
The high scoring rate he produced consistently with Swindon Town, Stoke City and Cardiff City has been repeated at Bradford, for whom the forward struck 15 times last season and has already found the net five times during the current term.
City in total have scored only eight goals since the start of the season and it is already obvious that Thorne's contribution will be a key factor in their attempt to reach League One in May.

The Form
Seen by many as leading candidates for promotion this season, Bradford have done their best to live up to that billing so far.
One defeat from their first four League Two matches has allowed City to climb to fifth position in the table, one point behind the four unbeaten clubs who share the lead with 10 points.
Bradford's first loss of the League Two campaign was inflicted on Saturday by Aldershot Town, who scored four minutes from time to secure a 3-2 win at the Recreation Ground, and City were heavily beaten during their Carling Cup first-round tie against Huddersfield Town last month. That particular West Yorkshire derby ended in a 4-0 defeat at the Galpharm Stadium.

The Odds
Leeds United are overwhelming favourites ahead of tonight's game, with William Hill offering 4-6 about a home win.
Bradford are 10-3 shots at a stadium where they have never won a competitive game, while a draw will pay out at 12-5.

The Whistler
Anthony Taylor. The Greater Manchester official has entered his fourth season as a Football League referee, and he was the man in the middle for United's home game against Yeovil Town last season, handing out four yellow cards.
Taylor took a relatively tough line during the 2007-08 campaign, showing 105 cautions and his red card on 10 occasions, but he has averaged one booking a game during his four matches this term.

Stuart McCall was born on 10 June 1964 in Leeds, England, to Scottish parents Andy, a former professional footballer, and Jean McCall. He was the couple's third child after Leslie and Janette, who were 20 and 15 respectively when Stuart was born. The family home was just round the corner from Leeds United's Elland Road ground where McCall would spend many Saturday afternoons watching United, dreaming of following his father and playing for Leeds, even after the family moved to Wortley. McCall played football for Upper Wortley Primary School and Thornhill Middle School, even scoring a winning goal for the latter in a cup final when he came on as a substitute with his arm in a sling. McCall also played table tennis as a schoolboy but excelled at football, captaining the Leeds under-11 boys team and playing for other Leeds representative sides. McCall's parents split and he made up for his size when he moved to one of Leeds' toughest estates and played for pub sides by the age of 14. He moved schools to Harrington High and also played for local young sides Pudsey Juniors, Holbeck and later Farsley Celtic. McCall thought he had missed his chance of playing professionally after a string of other players were signed by professional clubs, until Farsley played Bradford City's junior side in a friendly and he impressed coach Bryan Edwards enough to be asked for a trial.

McCall out to avoid double derby pain

More than 20,000 fans are expected to watch the Yorkshire derby with Leeds in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy â€" a figure only matched once outside the final in the competition’s history.
City have sold nearly 4,000 tickets and McCall is desperate not to give them a double dose of misery after the recent Carling Cup hammering at Huddersfield.
McCall admitted: “Standing on the touchline for the last 20 minutes that night was really difficult and I don’t want that to be the case again at Elland Road.
“Obviously there is that possibility if Leeds play right to the top of their game and we’re under par. But we have to make sure that doesn’t happen.
“We played all right for an hour against Huddersfield and then the roof seemed to cave in. We’ve got to guard against that tonight.
“It’s about pride because this is still a derby regardless of what league the teams are in. We’ve got to do the best possible for the supporters as well as for ourselves.”
McCall and Leeds counterpart Gary McAllister were room-mates as Scottish internationals and there is plenty of respect between them.
McAllister said: “We go back a long way. We know what type of player Stuart was and what his teams are like.
“Bradford have started well and want promotion. That’s our number one priority too but we also want the momentum and confidence that goes with good cup runs.”
McCall’s recent record at Leeds with Sheffield United was good - he celebrated a 4-0 away win on the last visit. But he will always be remembered for the brawl with team-mate Andy Myers during City’s 6-1 thrashing in their final days in the Premiership.
McCall is reluctant to rake up the past but said: “That was a terrible day and one which I’d like to forget.
“But like last season, this is probably the toughest draw we could have got.
“This competition won’t be top of Gary’s priorities but he’ll know as well as anyone the financial aspects are there.
“Make no bones about it, losing to us would be an embarrassment for Leeds so they will play a strong side and it’s going to be a very difficult game.
“But it’s an exciting one for our supporters and there are a lot going over there. We don’t want to disappoint them and must make sure we put in a good performance.”
City could have a good omen in the camp.
Leeds fell at home to League Two opposition last season when 18,000 saw Chris Casper’s Bury win 2-1. Casper is now in charge of the youth team at Valley Parade.
McCall has received a boost on the injury front with medical checks showing Matt Clarke is far better than first feared.
McCall said: “The tests have shown it may not be too bad and might be just a case of cramping up in a certain area.
“You’ve got to be careful with calves but it sounds like he might be available for Port Vale next week which would be great news.”
Meanwhile, Chris Brandon will play in a private friendly against Burnley tomorrow.
Brandon has been out of action since damaging an ankle at Motherwell during pre-season.

Wetherall's delight at United and City's form

An injury severe enough to end his season excused David Wetherall from the massacre of Bradford City at Elland Road seven years ago. Squirming in his ringside seat, the defender felt every punch.
Wetherall was omitted from the squad named by Jim Jefferies on May 13, 2001, and took up the chance to work as a summariser with a local radio station during live commentary of Bradford's West Yorkshire derby against Leeds United.
To this day, he is still not certain whether his time in gantry was any less excruciating than his view from the pitch would have been.
Bradford, as a Premier League club, were fatally wounded before their appearance at Elland Road, and the penultimate weekend of the 2000-01 season saw them drown in the frustration which epitomised their entire year.
City's 6-1 defeat was a sporting humiliation, and the exchange of punches between two of their players, Stuart McCall and Andy Myers, a public relations disaster.
McCall and Wetherall will revisit the scene of that implosion tonight, no longer professional players but still in possession of an obvious score to settle.
"I can't say I was glad to miss that game," said Wetherall.
"Footballers are paid to play football and I didn't enjoy it any more from the commentary box.
"I like to tell myself that if I had been playing, it wouldn't have been the beating it was.
"Alternatively, there's nothing to say we wouldn't have conceded seven or eight goals with me in the side. The facts of the day are there in black and white.
"The result came at a stage when everything seemed to be a real struggle for us and there's nothing positive to be said about that game or that period in general.
"It was a difficult time to be a Bradford fan.
"I was an ex-Leeds player and I was itching to play at Elland Road from an early stage of the season, but the flare-up between two of our players summed up the whole afternoon.
"When things are going against you as badly as they were at Bradford, tempers tend to fray and it was plain to see that the pressure got the better of a couple of people.
"Most of us are very passionate about our jobs but there was no excuse for that and it's not an incident I'd expect anyone involved to say they were proud of. I think that's what you call a day to forget.
"The thing about Stuart is that he loves his football and particularly when it involves Bradford City.
"He'll want to win tonight just as much as he did back then."

The Johnstone's Paint Trophy was a tournament which, before last season, United had never contested, but this evening's first-round match at Elland Road is the pick of the draw for the Northern Section and a tie of some intrigue.
Leeds hope to attract a crowd in the region of 20,000.
At a push, the game may set the record for an attendance seen at any stage of the competition before the final.
"It's a great draw for both clubs," said Wetherall, Bradford's first-team coach and a retired centre-back who made in excess of 200 appearances for Leeds between 1991 and 1999.
"The Johnstone's Paint Trophy doesn't always register high on the priorities of every club but there's more attention on tonight's game than there might have been, simply because of who's involved.
"The local edge adds something to the tie, and games between Leeds and Bradford don't come around too often.
"There were easier draws out there certainly, but a better one? Probably not.
"For us, it's very important not to get too caught up in the occasion. Leeds will be an incredibly difficult team to beat and the most important thing first of all is that we go to Elland Road and do ourselves justice.
"Perhaps the most frustrating thing for the players (in 2001) was that it was difficult to leave the pitch with their heads held high.
"We've done okay this season and three wins from four league matches is a good start.
"Promotion to League One is the goal for us, I'll make no bones about that, but every game matters.
"We were never going to win the Carling Cup but our result in the first round wasn't what we were looking for."
City's 4-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town in the opening stage of the League Cup â€" their first West Yorkshire derby of the season â€" was not necessarily the overwhelming rout it appeared on paper, but four goals scored by Huddersfield in the second half embarrassed them nonetheless.
In Leeds they may see a club whose League One results lack panache, but United's cup pedigree has been excellent this season.
Carling Cup ties against Chester City and Crystal Palace yielded two wins and nine goals, and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy is a competition which Gary McAllister's squad is strong enough to win.
For Wetherall, satisfaction has been drawn from the fact that both Leeds and Bradford remain in business, despite so many threats to the contrary.
The 37-year-old left Elland Road before the rot set in, but he was captain at Valley Parade when frantic talk of wage deferrals, administration and liquidation was at its height.
He would not wish those circumstances on his worst enemy, less still a club who once employed him.
"I've always been fortunate to get a good reception whenever I go back to Elland Road, and I'm as happy as anyone to see Leeds coming through their problems," he said.
"Leeds and Bradford have been down very similar roads, and there were times when both clubs were in great danger.
"You can't exaggerate the scale of the problems they faced.
"It's pleasing to be able to say that ourselves and Leeds are now moving in a more positive direction and back towards a position in the English leagues where I think we're more suited to.
"The rivalry will be there tonight and I know where my loyalties lie but, for me, it's a satisfying thing to see Leeds and Bradford enjoying better times.
"Both clubs deserve it."
