Kamp 6/9:

CARLISLE COMEBACK HALTS SHRIMPERS

An impressive second-half fightback from Carlisle helped the Cumbrians maintain their unbeaten league record with a 2-1 home win over Southend.
Debutant Dougie Freedman put Southend ahead with a classy 24th-minute strike.
But Carlisle put a poor first-half display behind them to finish strongly with a Danny Graham penalty and a match-winner from winger Cleveland Taylor.
Southend had the better of a stop-start opening period and Freedman's goal was a rare moment of skill.
The signing from Crystal Palace gained possession 40 yards from goal and drifted inside Paul Thirlwell before curling a superb 20-yard left-foot shot just inside keeper Ben Williams' right-hand post.
But Carlisle levelled with a penalty after 62 minutes. There appeared to be little real threat from David Raven's long ball into the box until Peter Clarke pushed Danny Livesey, and Graham sent keeper Steve Mildenhall the wrong way from the spot to score his sixth goal of the season.
Carlisle grabbed the winner after 77 minutes when substitute Michael Bridges played Simon Hackney in and although Graham overran the winger's cross Taylor was on hand to bang home the loose ball from six yards.

Scunthorpe 2 - 1 Carlisle

SCUNNY SEE OFF CUMBRIANS' CHALLENGE

Carlisle were left to rue a series of missed chances as they lost 2-1 away at Scunthorpe to slip to their first defeat of the season.
The Cumbrians were sunk by two goals in 12 second-half minutes as in-form Scunthorpe made it four wins on the trot.
A double substitution in the 58th minute did the trick for the Iron as they introduced wingers Matt Sparrow and Martyn Woolford.
The two combined to put Scunthorpe in front in the 61st minute when Woolford's left-wing cross was headed forcefully home by Sparrow.
Scunthorpe struck again in the 73rd minute when striker Paul Hayes provided the finishing touch after a long-range effort from Woolford.
Carlisle reduced the arrears in the 77th minute when striker Danny Carlton scrambled a shot home from close range, but it was too little too late.

First Aid for Leeds United

Aidan White

Aidan White may be thrown into a daunting league debut at Carlisle United on Saturday after the Football Association imposed a three-match suspension on Alan Sheehan.
England's governing body confirmed the length of Sheehan's ban yesterday following his dismissal at Swindon Town on Saturday, and Gary McAllister is considering turning to the youngest member of his first-team squad.
Leeds blooded 16-year-old White in their cup ties against Crystal Palace and Bradford City last month and watched him sail through both examinations and McAllister indicated that the academy player was leading the queue of professionals vying for inclusion at Brunton Park.
The left-back role is available after Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Sheehan was dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Jon-Paul McGovern eight minutes into the 3-1 victory over Swindon.
Sheehan will miss Saturday's visit to third-placed Carlisle, who are licking the wounds from a first league defeat of the season, and will also sit out the forthcoming Carling Cup tie against Hartlepool United and league fixture with Hereford United at Elland Road.

CASPER'S WAIT

Goalkeeper Casper plays waiting game with injury...
United goalkeeper Casper Ankergren is unlikely to return to the United squad for the weekend trip to Carlisle United.
The big Dane suffered an ankle injury in training last week and young Scot Alan Martin stepped up to the bench at Swindon on Saturday.
Boss Gary McAllister confirmed: "Casper has had an x-ray which has shown no real damage.
"It may be that he goes for a scan to have another look, but we'll let it settle down this week and see how things are."
Casper has been confined to bench duty in recent weeks with Dave Lucas stepping up for his longest run in the side.
The former Preston and Sheffield Wednesday keeper made his seasonal debut against Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup and has featured in the last five games.
Dave made an outstanding save at Swindon on Saturday and you can see it again on the LUTV player on the leedsunited.com home page.

Lucas: Leeds United can cope with the pressure

The question of how well Leeds United are equipped to withstand the pressure of this season is one which David Lucas saw his team-mates answering at Swindon Town.
Leeds pulled into the County Ground with their tails up after running rings round Crewe Alexandra, but their unflustered attitude in the face of a numerical disadvantage on Saturday was Lucas' idea of a show of strength.
United's chance of piecing together successive league wins for the first time this season was almost wrecked by the eighth-minute dismissal of Alan Sheehan at Swindon, but the reaction of the 10 remaining players ensured a victory which was not only courageous but richly deserved.
A positive sense of satisfaction will swirl around Thorp Arch this week as Gary McAllister and his players prepare for Saturday's trip to Carlisle United and a game of some significance, even at this point of the season.
And the fight displayed at the County Ground left Lucas feeling increasingly confident about Leeds' ability to meet the achievements expected of them.
United's goalkeeper said: "The thing about playing for Leeds is that you know people will always be firing shots at you, no matter what happens.
"The lads are aware that the attention on us is even greater than usual when the results aren't going as well as we'd like, and it was obvious that people would start questioning us if we weren't there or thereabouts early on. But you'd have to say that we're on a decent roll and getting better by the game.
"It looks like a bad situation when you get a player sent off after eight minutes but we've been playing well for a few weeks now and I didn't expect the lads to panic. Ten against 11 isn't an impossible situation as long as you stick together.
"If you look through the team, we've got a defence with a lot of experience and a midfield who've got hundreds of games under their belts.
"We weren't going to get flustered by the red card, and that shows why I'm really confident about us doing well this season. We're under pressure to go up, but anyone who saw us at Swindon knows we can cope with that pressure."
Ten days ago, McAllister was being asked to discuss a squad who had amassed only five points from four matches, but United's elevation to fourth in a league table which their manager is still steadfastly ignoring has stressed the wisdom of reserving judgement on results until the dust of the new season has settled.
Leeds' standing in League One has left them breathing over the shoulder of Carlisle, in time for a reunion between two clubs who produced four superb contests last season, culminating in United's last-gasp victory in the play-off semi-final.
It cannot surprise McAllister to see Carlisle pushing towards the head of the field any more than John Ward, the Cumbrians' manager, will have expected Leeds to trail far behind his club, and this weekend's match will be seen by many as an early skirmish between two teams who will go head-to-head with more ferocity later in the season.
"I guess it's a big game, but we're still at an early stage of the season," said Lucas.
"What's more important is building up a run of form which sets us up for the time in the season where individual games make a big difference to the league table.
"At the moment, we've only lost one game and we've got two straight wins behind us so other clubs can see we're getting some momentum together.
"The most pleasing thing is that we're picking up results by playing good football and that's the best of both worlds, especially for the fans.
"It can't always be like that and everyone has to accept that when it's time to battle then it's time to battle, but the one thing you can say about us is that we play football whenever we get the chance.
"As soon as Alan got sent off, we could feel our backs against the wall but there was a belief among the players that we would get a result anyway.
"We stuck together and relied on our quality to pull us through.
"Our goals came at good times, and towards the end I thought we were bossing the game.
"We looked like a really good side against Crewe last weekend but I think the win at Swindon shows what we're made of. These are the games where you see a team's true colours.
"There was a great atmosphere in the dressing room after the game because we could sense how big a win it was. We could easily have dropped points, and people might have seen a draw as a decent result.
"When a plan does come off and you achieve something that seems a bit impossible, it's a good feeling."
The forthcoming match at Brunton Park will bring together two of League One's leading goalscorers, Jermaine Beckford and Danny Graham, and Lucas added his voice to the clamour of praise for Beckford's achievements after the forward took his tally of goals for the season to 10 with two finishes against Swindon.
Beckford is attempting to equal the 20-goal haul he produced last season and has taken just over a month to reach the halfway point of that target, and his partnership with Luciano Becchio, United's summer signing from Spain, was another influential factor at the County Ground.
"We're lucky that we've got two great strikers," said Lucas. "They're probably two of the best in the division.
"When you've got Becks and Luciano up front, you know it's quite likely that you'll sneak a goal at some point. We had the quality to pick Swindon off. Becks' biggest quality is that he doesn't miss many chances. He can have a quiet spell and then the ball will come to him and he'll ping it into the top corner.
"He's obviously got natural talent but, to be fair to him, he also practices very hard in training and the goals are his reward for that work. People shouldn't overlook that."

Ward relishing United clash
Revenge is a concept which John Ward finds unsavoury, and he has no desire to see the outcome of last season's play-off semi-final weaken the mutual respect that exists between the players of Carlisle United and Leeds United.

United set for big test against promotion rivals

ON TARGET: Neil Kilkenny

THREE straight wins have done wonders for the confidence of everyone at Leeds United, but they face the biggest test of their League One title credentials so far when travelling north to Carlisle on Saturday.
Brunton Park was a contrasting scene for the Whites last term as it was the ground on which they tasted defeat for the first time after a long unbeaten start, but it was also where a Jonny Howson-inspired United team won a memorable play-off semi-final.
With thoughts of the latter still fresh in the mind it will be a hot atmosphere and a real test of nerve as well as footballing ability in what for Carlisle fans at least will be seen as their cup final.
Hero last time Howson may have to settle for a place on the bench this time as Gary McAllister looks to keep as much of a winning side together as possible and wants to build on a start to the campaign which has seen his team now climb to fourth place with 11 points in six league games.

McDonald wary of striker Dan's threat

Danny Graham

Neil McDonald can see obvious irony in the fact that his most astute piece of business as manager of Carlisle United will pose the biggest threat to Leeds United on Saturday.
McDonald was the boss who lured Danny Graham to Carlisle on a free transfer last year, and whatever else caused the club's board to sack the 42-year-old a short time later, his recruitment of the striker from Middlesbrough cannot have stood against him.
Graham scored seven times in 11 matches during an initial loan with Carlisle, and his first complete term at Brunton Park yielded 17 goals. An extension of that reliability and a six-goal haul saw him beat Jermaine Beckford to this season's first League One player-of-the-month award.
The two strikers will share a pitch on Saturday when Leeds visit Carlisle for a 12.15pm kick-off and the pick of the weekend's League One fixtures and while Beckford's healthy frame of mind has been exposed by his unrivalled tally of 10 goals, McDonald is equally certain about the player who will threaten Leeds' run of six matches without defeat.
United's first-team coach said: "We're well aware of Danny's ability, and I know a bit more than most because I took him into Carlisle when I was manager there.
"We got him on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, which I saw as a brilliant bit of business at the time, and you'd probably say that he's one of their most valuable players now. Danny's a different type of player to Jermaine but he's deadly at his best.
"It doesn't surprise me that he's started this season well, and the player-of-the-month award is something he's always going to be in with a chance of winning because he scores goals consistently. I know he'll be a threat on Saturday.
"We're lucky at Leeds that we've got a striker who's every bit as good, and Jermaine's form has been fantastic. Both teams are definitely capable of punishing each other."
Graham's career prior to joining Carlisle included two months on loan at Elland Road, where he made only three appearances and generally failed to fire during the final weeks of the 2005-06 season, and McDonald admitted he was initially uncertain whether he would be able to persuade the forward to trade Middlesbrough for a League One club.
Graham tested the water with a successful temporary spell at Brunton Park, leading to a permanent transfer, and although Carlisle's business this summer was dominated by the loss of two key players â€" Kieran Westwood and Joe Garner â€" their present manager John Ward was able to retain his leading scorer for a second full season.
"He'd been to Leeds and he'd been to Derby County on loan so we had to persuade him that Carlisle was the right place for him," said McDonald, Carlisle's boss for 14 months before his unceremonious sacking last August.
"I went to see him play for Middlesbrough's reserves and it was obvious that he was a player who would score goals in League One.
It didn't take him any time to get going.
"Strikers tend to steal the headlines, and him and Jermaine are getting theirs at the moment, but it's important to acknowledge the players around them as well. As a team we're creating a lot of chances and Becks can't finish unless the ball's at his feet. His 10 goals are a tribute to how well he and the rest of the side are playing.
"I do take an interest in the guys who worked under me at Carlisle and it pleases me to see Danny doing well. But I won't be disappointed if he has a quiet game at the weekend."
McDonald made his first appearance at Brunton Park since his sacking on the night in May when Jonathan Howson's injury-time goal decided the play-off semi-final between the sides last season.
The parting of ways was acrimonious â€" McDonald has never been clear about the reasons why Carlisle's former owner, Fred Story, sacked him one game into the 2007-08 season â€" but United's coach did not find the controversy clouding his focus on his return to Cumbria.
"I enjoyed being back there, although obviously in a different capacity," he said. "I always believed I did a good job, just as I think John Ward's done a smashing job in taking them forward.
"Both clubs are in a good position and it's set up for an excellent game. They're very strong at home and we're very dangerous away. Something's got to give."
