Whites can rampage at Millwall

Millwall v Leeds
Millwall entertain Leeds at the New Den on Saturday desperate to inflict a backlash for the 4-0 defeat at the hands of MK Dons in their last home outing.
Despite that setback, it has been a promising start to the season for Kenny Jackett’s men as they currently lie just two points behind leaders Scunthorpe.
Jackett picked up September’s Manager of the Month award and that was an indictment of how his side have prospered since their relegation battle of last season, although the Lions will have to do without joint-top scorer Tresor Kandol for this game as he cannot play against his parent club.
Last week’s 3-1 away win at Tranmere has also come at a cost with Jermaine Easter and Chris Hackett suspended for the visit of Gary McAllister’s troops.
In the absence of Kandol and Easter, Millwall will be counting on Lewis Grabban to the do the damage, the former Crystal Palace man having offered a genuine threat all season.
Leeds might not be ahead of the Londoners on points at present but they will nonetheless consider themselves to be the better equipped of the two sides to mount a promotion challenge.
After the heartbreak of their play-off final defeat to Doncaster last season, McAllister has quietly gone about trying to build a side that is now capable of going up to the Championship automatically.
After a couple of stuttering results, United returned to winning ways with a convincing win at Elland Road against Brighton last weekend.
Jermaine Beckford bagged another brace, taking his tally to nine for the season as he leads the League One scoring charts.
Whilst Beckford continues to hit the back of the net, midfield wonder kid Fabian Delph has had scouts up and down the country eager to report back to their various managers.
If their star pair are on their game, it is difficult to see Millwall living with them.
These two sides are dead level in the league and this promises to be an enthralling encounter.
Whilst Millwall have home advantage and will be backed by their notoriously ferocious supporters, Leeds are a team on the up and will be confident of picking up all three points on their travels yet again.

Verdict: Millwall 1-2 Leeds

Double defender blow for Leeds

Leeds United will be without defenders Alan Sheehan and Paul Telfer for the League One clash at Millwall on Saturday afternoon.

A hamstring strain is keeping Irish left-back Sheehan on the sidelines following a recent three-game ban, so teenager Aidan White should retain his place in the side.

Telfer has missed the last two matches with a groin problem, leaving Lubo Michalik to partner Rui Marques in central defence, with captain Frazer Richardson at full-back.

Fabian Delph is expected to continue in central midfield alongside Jonathan Douglas, with Andy Hughes, Jonny Howson, Neil Kilkenny, Andy Robinson, Robert Snodgrass and David Prutton all vying for starting places.

Leading goalscorer Jermaine Beckford, with 13 goals this season, should partner Luciano Becchio, who has hit the target five times, in attack.

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett will be forced to change his winning side ahead of tomorrow's visit of Leeds United with striker Tresor Kandol ineligiblle and Chris Hackett suspended.

Kandol, who scored twice in The Lions 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers last weekend, is unable to play under the terms of his loan deal and that could open the door for Neil Harris to return to the side. The veteran striker has missed the last three games with a nerve injury but is back in full training and has been added to the squad along with youngster Ashley Grimes, who his a hattrick for the reserves in midweek.

And Harris is looking forward to a return to the first team.

"The atmosphere in the stands will be great. We must make sure we are prepared for that," he told the South London Press.

"When we play the game properly, we are very, very good - with pace and ability, as we have shown in the last six weeks. We must prove we are as good a team as them."

At the back, Jackett could opt to play Alan Dunne, who has filled in several times in that position in the past, but rumours in this morning's SLP suggest that the Millwall boss could play with Andy Frampton or Tony Craig there rather than opt for Dunne or Marcus Bignot, who appears to have fallen out of favour.

LEEDS UNITED: Macca hails fab four

Date: 17 October 2008
By Phil Hay

Gary McAllister does not expect Leeds United to be haunted by the ghost of Dougie Freedman tomorrow, insisting the team he selects at Millwall will be loaded with match-winners.
McAllister is looking for his second win in as many visits to the New Den as United's manager, after masterminding a 2-0 win in London last season, and believes his side are as well equipped to beat the Lions tomorrow as they were when they travelled to the capital in April.

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett claimed yesterday that loan-man Freedman was the driving force behind Leeds' 2-0 success, describing the striker as the "key" which prised open his defence, but McAllister says his present squad are every bit as capable of securing three points at the New Den tomorrow.

"As much as I agree with Kenny that Dougie was very influential last season, I feel we've got four or five people who can ultimately be as influential as him tomorrow," said McAllister.

"Luciano Becchio's come in and done fantastically well leading the line, and he's taken a bit of the heat off our leading marksman (Jermaine Beckford).

"Offensively, we've also got Fabian Delph and Neil Kilkenny hitting form, and I think we've looked dangerous.

"Both clubs are going along nicely and they must be feeling very confident. They had a fantastic September, like us, and Kenny will be pleased with his points tally after 10 games.

"These are two teams who, after this little settling period, will want to stay up around the top of the table. They pass the ball and the teams who have done well in this division tend to do that. I'm not surprised where they're at."

Leeds and Millwall have matched each other all season, and gaining a foothold inside League One's play-off positions, but Jackett pipped McAllister to the manager of the month award for September after both clubs won all four of their league matches.

United claimed victory in six matches in all during September, but McAllister insisted he did not begrudge Jackett his accolade.

"It was nice to be in the nominations for that, but give me it in April or May anytime," he said.

Leeds are taking a travelling contingent of 2,200 supporters tomorrow having parted with their full allocation of tickets, but the crowd is unlikely to rise far above 13,000 after the sale of tickets for home sections of the stadium was ended for safety reasons on Wednesday.

"It's not an easy place to try and get results," conceded McAllister. "It was a very tight game last season, but it was crucial for our run-in.

"We were well supported and we will be again. We want to leave the New Den talking about good things.

"I don't want to get into the history of the trouble between the clubs. I'd rather look at the way things are at the moment, and it's a very good game to be playing in."

United's main injury worry is 36-year-old centre-back Paul Telfer, who is likely to miss the game because of a groin strain, and Leeds are also unable to call on Irish left-back Alan Sheehan.

McAllister admitted that United are still to determine a projected timeline for Sheehan's recovery from a torn hamstring, saying: "We've not even spoken about a comeback date

Kandol switches his allegiance from United

TRESOR KANDOL is still contracted to Leeds United but the striker is in no doubt about which team he will be cheering in south London today â€" Millwall.
The 27-year-old has been on loan at the Den for the past couple of months and has already netted four goals in seven games to turn Kenny Jackett's side into surprise promotion challengers.
Kandol, who is due back at Elland Road in January, is unable to play against his parent club today due to the terms of his loan switch. But he said: "I will be sitting on the sidelines hoping Millwall win. Right now, I am wearing the Millwall kit, with the Millwall badge â€" and for me that means backing them.
"The way I see it, you can't expect the other badge to be winning. I am frustrated at not being able to play. I wish I had the chance to be on the pitch.
"But we all knew it would be like this when I came here. The boys will just have to do what is needed. They have nothing to be afraid of."
Kandol, who netted twice in last weekend's 3-1 win at Tranmere, joined Leeds from Barnet for £200,000 towards the end of 2006 and has netted 12 goals in 59 league outings for the club.
United, meanwhile, will be hoping for a repeat of their last visit the Den in April when goals from David Prutton and Andrew Hughes sealed a 2-0 win that would, but for the 15-point deduction, have been enough to seal automatic promotion.
Manager Gary McAllister said: "It is not an easy place to try and get results. It was a very tight game last season but it was crucial for our run-in."
United's main injury concern is Paul Telfer with the defender struggling with a groin injury.
