Cobblers crash despite Constantine strike

Walsall 3 Northampton Town 1
Leon Constantine's second goal of the season could not prevent the Cobblers from losing at Walsall.
Chris Palmer and Dwayne Mattis scored in the 13th and 22nd minutes to put the Saddlers in complete control at the Bescot Stadium.
There were no positives for Town at all in an opening 45 minutes dominated by the home side from start to finish.
And there was even a fairly large negative with Abdul Osman adding to the growing injury crisis when he limped out of the action after only a quarter of an hour.
After the break Troy Deeney challenged Frank Fielding for a high ball and won to give Walsall a 3-0 lead that sparked a fierce confrontation between Constantine and Ryan Gilligan.
The former Leeds striker had the ball in the net moments later when he nodded in after Giles Coke's shot had been deflected onto the crossbar.
Coke hit the woodwork again later in the half but the home side were worthy winners.

Injuries mount up in Walsall defeat:
Gilligan and Osman add to lengthy injury list

The Cobblers' injury list grew on Saturday afternoon as the Cobblers were beaten by Walsall. Abdul Osman and Ryan Gilligan were forced to come off and Stuart Gray is now even more strecthed ahead of next weeks' trip to Leeds in the F.A. Cup.
Gray revealed, "Abdul Osman has picked up a knee injury and Ryan Gilligan has done a groin so we are very stretched at the moment and we will have to see how they are for next week."
Adebayo Akinfenwa, Luke Guttridge, Liam Davis and Colin Larkin were already missing through injury before today's game.

ON-SONG SADDLERS SINK THE COBBLERS

Walsall picked up their first win in six games but had to survive a determined rally as they beat Northampton 3-1 at the Banks's Stadium.
The Saddlers notched two goals in a five-minute spell - firstly in the 17th minute as Chris Palmer cut inside to rifle the ball into the roof of the net and register his first goal for the club.
Then a Palmer corner in the 22nd minute led to a goalmouth scramble in which Anthony Gerrard appeared to get the final touch for the Saddlers' second.
Walsall looked safe in the 63rd minute when they notched a third, Palmer having a shot blocked, but as the ball spun high in the air Troy Deeney beat Northampton goalkeeper Frank Fielding and the ball looped in.
From then on, however, Northampton ran the show and were back in it after 70 minutes when Leon Constantine headed in after Giles Coke had hit the crossbar.

Huff..

Gray in the hunt for loan signing

Stuart Gray feels making another addition to his Northampton Town squad in time for Friday's FA Cup tie at Leeds United will prove difficult.
The Town manager lost two midfielders to injury in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Walsall, with Abdul Osman picking up a knee problem and Ryan Gilligan injuring his groin.
With Gray having to name seven substitutes for the Setanta Sports-televised clash at Elland Road, it means the manager will have to dip into the youth ranks just to field a complete matchday squad.
Only loan signings can be made until the transfer window reopens in January â€" when it is understood the club will be looking to buy â€" but Gray says getting bodies in on a temporary basis will be problematic as other teams won't want their players cup-tied.
"Abdul had tracked back into our 18-yard box and it looks like he's picked up a knee injury," said the manager.
"I need to wait and see what the medical team have to say about it but it's very early at the moment.
"Then in the second half Ryan Gilligan has picked up a groin strain, so we might have to look at a loan signing but it's a lot easier said than done. With us playing a cup game this Friday teams are a lot more reluctant to let their players go and get cup-tied."
Despite going down 3-1 at the Bescot Stadium, Gray was refusing to get downhearted about the defeat, and felt his side had thrown the points away.
He identified the midfield contributions of Giles Coke and Alex Dyer as reasons to be cheerful in the west midlands.
"I can actually take several positives from the game," he said. "Giles Coke played really well and little Alex Dyer did a good job for us when he came on.
"We chased it and went three up front but we were just missing that bit of calmness in attack, and that's the hardest part of the game, putting the ball in the back of the net. We definitely threw three points away in this game because we had enough chances to win it."

Cobblers new signing can play at Leeds

Northampton Town today signed striker Nicholas Bignall on a month's loan from Reading - and he is available to play against Leeds United in the FA Cup on Friday.
The 18-year-old, who came through the Reading Academy, scored a hat-trick in the Royals' 4-0 win over Brighton reserves and travelled as part of their first-team squad for the recent Championship clash at Burnley.
"He is a young player with plenty of pace and he can play up front or out wide," said boss Stuart Gray.
"Like all of their young players, he has had an excellent grounding at Reading. I think he can do a good job for us and he will give us a different option.
"We have a number of injuries in the squad at the moment and I think Nicholas will be good for us and we can be good for him.
"He is a player we have been tracking for a while. He first came to light when we saw him in the FA Youth Cup last season and he is highly rated at Reading so we are very grateful to Steve Coppell for loaning him to us for a month."
The loan will run until the Leyton Orient game on December 6.

Leon has nothing to prove in cup clash

Leon Constantine insists he has got nothing to prove to Leeds United as he prepares to return to his former club with Northampton Town tomorrow night.
The Cobblers picked the striker up from the Whites in the summer on a free transfer, bringing down the curtain on an injury-ravaged 12 months for Constantine at Elland Road.
It perhaps summed up the striker's luck when he broke his arm in the process of scoring for Leeds in their 3-1 defeat to Oldham Athletic on New Year's Day.
But despite his injuries ensuring he never nailed down a first-team place for the Yorkshire giants, the 30-year-old only has happy memories of his spell at the club, and returns there in FA Cup first round action on Friday not looking for any kind of bitter revenge.
"I haven't got anything to prove at Leeds," he said. "Every time I
played for them I scored, more or less.
"I had a great relationship with the supporters there but that's history now, I'm at Northampton and I want to do my best for them.
"We'll just go there on Friday and if I'm selected I'll do my best to help the team get a result. It's got nothing to do with Leeds, it could be anyone we're playing.
"We need to go there, put in the graft and get a result."
Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Walsall has left the Cobblers 15th in the Coca-Cola League One table, and nine points adrift of arch rivals
Peterborough in the final play-off place.
For some the Cup will come as a welcome distraction but not Constantine, who feels it is far too early to start worrying about league positions.
"If I believed that we weren't going to finish in the play-offs then I wouldn't even be turning up to play on a Saturday," said Constantine.
"If any of us believed that there wouldn't be any point in us being here.
"Freak things like what happened at Walsall when we were getting in the way of our own shots, won't happen in every game. So we'll keep
fighting and go forward."

Cobblers' cup referee to make Elland Road debut

Michael Oliver will referee at Elland Road for the first time when he takes charge of the FA Cup clash with Northampton Town on Friday.
The Northumbria official has taken charge of 13 games so far this season, showing 28 yellow cards and one red.
Last season, he showed 73 yellow cards and six reds in 29 games.
It will be the first time that he`s refereed a Leeds game. The last time he was in charge of Cobblers was last season when they lost 2-0 against Doncaster Rovers away.

Davies hopeful - but five ruled out for Leeds clash

Liam Davies will train with the Northampton Town squad today as they head to Leeds United desperately short of first-team players.
Davis is back in training after a stress fracture where he will be joined by Ryan Gilligan, who has recovered from a groin strain.
But missing from Friday's FA Cup clash because of injury will be Adebayo Akinfenwa, Luke Guttridge, Abdul Osman, and Colin Larkin.
And Karl Hawley won't be available either as Preston North End have not given the striker permission to play in the FA Cup for Northampton.
Town's other two loanees, Scott McGleish and Nicholas Bignall, are allowed to play, though, after getting the green light from parent clubs Wycombe Wanderers and Reading respectively.

Gray's secret weapon to shoot down Leeds

Some pretty big guns will be out of commission for the Cobblers at Elland Road - but manager Stuart Gray has a secret weapon in his arsenal.
Nicholas Bignall will be an unknown quantity to just about everyone in the ground at Leeds with the exception of the bloke in the suit in the away dug-out.
The Reading forward, a player described by his new temporary manager as 'a flyer', might have to make do with a place on the bench this evening.
The horses for this particular course as far as the strikers' department is concerned are likely to be Scott McGleish and Leon Constantine â€" their experience will be vital in the big-game atmosphere.
But Bignall will certainly get a chance. And he possesses the attribute more important than any other in an impact player.
"Throughout my career I've been described as pacy," says the 18-year-old, in a tone which manages to combine both modesty and confidence.
"I've got a bit of speed and hopefully I can use that against Leeds.
"My game is all about playing on the shoulder of the last man and getting in behind the defence. Hopefully I can do that tonight."
Bignall is the third player to come to Sixfields on loan from Reading under Gray, and if he's as good as the first two then the manager will be a very happy man.
Alex Pearce and Simon Cox have successfully made the trip up the A43 in seasons gone by, and both are still held in high regard by the Cobblers faithful.
The latest addition to the trinity of Royals is relishing the chance to enjoy some senior football after becoming a regular among the goals for several youth teams and the reserves at the Madeksi Stadium.
"It's a very big opportunity for me," said the 18-year-old. "It's a good chance to play some first-team football and get experience.
"Hopefully the guys back at Reading can see what I'm capable of doing in front of a big crowd.
"There's a lot of competition at the team and there are a lot of strikers.
"I understand that and I understand how hard it's
going to be to break into that side.
"But if I come out and play some games then I can show them what I can do."
As far the players missing for the Cobblers, there are some key people out.
Top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa is still sidelined, along with midfield sparks Luke Guttridge and Abdul Osman, and winger Colin Larkin.
It's a depressing injury picture for Gray but it's not all bad â€" Liam Davis returned to training yesterday after a month out with a stress fracture of his left foot, and the news on Ryan Gilligan's groin problem was good, with that player also returning to the paddock this week.
Karl Hawley has not been given permission to play in the FA Cup by parent club Preston North End.
The absences also open the door for fringe players to get a chance in the top team.
Joe Benjamin should at least travel with the squad after scoring in Wednesday's FA Youth Cup win over Rushden & Diamonds, and Alex
Dyer â€" who has looked good more or less whenever he's been given the chance to play in central midfield â€" could be involved.
"I think I've got 13 to choose from," said Gray with a reuful smile.
"But don't worry, I'll get 11 out.
"The pleasing thing is we're not getting injuries in training, they are all things we're picking up during matches.
"They're contact injuries. If we were getting them in training I'd have to have a look at what I was doing in training, but that's not the case and we just have to get on with it.
"We've got Scott McGleish, though, and we've got Nicholas Bignall and they can both come into the squad."
