Sunderland hope to land Newcastle's Smith on free
Sunderland are closing in on Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.
The Daily Mail says Sunderland are ready to move for £60,000-a-week striker Smith, who could be allowed to leave for free in the summer as part of much-needed cost cutting.
Newcastle are keen to lose Smith's wages after just three appearances this season. He was left out of the line-up against Arsenal and is now ready to quit.
Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia is desperate to land the former Leeds firebrand while Blackburn and Everton may also show interest if Smith takes a substantial cut in terms.
All three see Smith's appetite for the fight as an attribute that could improve their sides - Newcastle would do well to use that themselves.

Carlisle capture Harte: Former Leeds star makes League One switch

Carlisle have pulled off a coup by signing former Leeds defender Ian Harte on a short-term deal.
Harte arrives at Brunton Park on a free transfer after leaving Blackpool in February.
The 31-year-old came close to a move to Scottish side St Mirren last month only to pull out of the switch at the last minute.
Harte could make his debut this weekend against Northampton and Cumbrians boss Greg Abbott was delighted to land the Irishman.
"Ian is a very experienced player and that's probably what we need at the moment," Abbott told the club's official website.
"We are pleased that he has decided that he wants to roll his sleeves up and help us out with the situation we find ourselves in at the moment.
"He will bring a calmness to the back line and he is another who will help the younger players along. Much of his experience is at the very highest level and that is a very good thing for us to have on board."

Ian Morris [Scunthorpe - Carlisle] Loan

Carlisle complete double signing
Carlisle have completed the double signing of unattached defender Ian Harte and Scunthorpe midfielder Ian Morris on loan, both until the summer.
Republic of Ireland international Harte, 31, has been a free agent since leaving Blackpool in February.
Boss Greg Abbott told the club website: "Ian is very experienced and that's probably what we need at the moment."
Morris, 22, will stand in for injured Cumbrians captain Paul Thirlwell until the end of the season.
Like Harte, Morris was a trainee with Leeds before joining Scunthorpe in 2006.
Abbott added: "Ian has an energy and a desire to play and I think he will fit into the way that we like to do things in midfield nicely." (BBC)

Clubs in the Football League can sign players on loan outside of the transfer windows, following a seven-day period after the transfer window closed on 2 February with this period closing at 1700 GMT on Thursday 26 March.
Outside of the transfer windows, any club may still sign players on an emergency basis (such as if they had no goalkeepers available) with the permission of their competition's governing body, ie the Premier League.
Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they are unattached free agents when the window closes.

The former Millwall and Hull playmaker has made 24 appearances for the Seagulls this season, but is heading to Kenilworth Road on the back of Gary Dicker's arrival on loan from Stockport. Livermore will go straight into the Hatters' squad for their trip to Morecambe on Saturday.

Harte joined Carlisle on a free transfer last week having left Blackpool in February but he is now facing an early end to his campaign. (YEP)

Executive director of football Dennis Wise is set to leave Newcastle in a summer shake-up at St James' Park. (Daily Mirror)

Former Leeds United boss could be heading for Newcastle exit

Speculation is mounting on Tyneside that the arrival of Alan Shearer could spell Dennis Wise's exit at Newcastle United.
Wise quit Elland Road to take on the role of executive director of football at St James's Park in January 2008.
But that may be about to come to an end with Alan Shearer today expected to be confirmed as Newcastle's new manager - with eight games to save his boyhood club from relegation.
According to reports, that appointment is likely to bring down the curtain on Wise's spell on Tyneside.
Reports first emerged late last night that 38-year-old former England captain Shearer would fill the void created by Joe Kinnear's absence as he recovers from heart surgery.
Chris Hughton has been in charge of team affairs since early February, but has been unable to stop the slide in the club's fortunes which began when Kevin Keegan left the club in September.
Shearer is expected to start work straight away but reports suggest he will not be unveiled to the media until tomorrow.
The Magpies sit third from bottom and two points from safety in the Barclays Premier League and face a tough run of fixtures in their fight to avoid the drop, with Guus Hiddink's Chelsea visiting St James' Park on Saturday.
Wise was widely considered the tipping point that saw the departure of Kevin Keegan from the club in September. YEP

Telfer til Slough Town

"In a career spanning over 550 football league appearances, Paul Telfer joins the squad. Boasting a wealth of experience having played for Luton Town, Southampton, Coventry City and Glasgow Celtic, the former Scotland international joins the club following a short spell at Leeds United earlier this season. Despite starting his career on the right side of midfield, Paul has played much of his career at right-back and is a former teammate of Darren Salton whilst at Luton Town."

Management changes to cost Newcastle £15M
Newcastle United's poor management decisions will cost the club £15 million.
The Mail on Sunday says Newcastle's hiring and firing spree in the past two years will cost the club £15million in compensation once the costs of removing Dennis Wise and Kevin Keegan are taken into account.
Since Glenn Roeder was sacked and Sam Allardyce appointed as manager in May 2007, Newcastle have embarked on an astonishing turnover of coaching staff under owner Mike Ashley.
Payouts for Roeder, Allardyce and their staffs totalled £5.72m and the club will now have to pay Wise more than £1m in addition to a potential £8m that is claimed by Keegan and is currently being negotiated.
The huge sums are on top of the £1.8m Alan Shearer will earn if he manages to keep Newcastle up.

Aspin calls time on Town tenure

NEIL ASPIN has dropped a bombshell – revealing he will leave Harrogate Town in the summer owing to an "unacceptable" budget for season 2009-10.
Aspin took over as manager in January 2005 following three years as a Town player, but the 43-year-old says he cannot work on chairman Bill Fotherby's planned budget for next season.
The club have already made financial cutbacks, transfer-listing the whole squad and offloading star players like Danny Holland, but for Aspin details of the club's financial future have proved the final straw.
Aspin said: "The situation at the club is that I won't be there next season because of the meetings that we have had. I have a year left on my contract but I will be leaving in the summer.
"We've had a meeting which is private but it's obviously to do with the budget. I'm not happy to continue and obviously the club can save on my wages if I can get sorted out with another club.
"This is my fifth season as manager but obviously I had three seasons as a player and it's not something I want to do because I wanted to stay at Harrogate.
"I live in Knaresborough and I have always been loyal to the clubs I have been at – I had 10 years at Port Vale and eight years at Leeds. But the situation for next season is not what I want from football. I want to try and progress.
"There's no bad feeling and I appreciate it from the chairman and the club's point of view as regards to the budget, but I feel that it's got giving me a chance to do anything and I am not prepared to just pick up my money.
"It would be better if I moved on and then the club can use some of my money to go to the playing budget – it will be better all round."
Aspin guided Town to the Conference North play-offs in 2005-6, when they lost to Stafford Rangers, and the last two campaigns have seen his side agonisingly denied a play-off place on the last day of the season.
Aspin also took Town to the FA Cup first round proper in 2006, when they went out on penalties to Torquay, and throughout his tenure he has been linked with various posts, notably at former club Port Vale as well as York City.
The Gateshead-born manager says he has had no discussions with any club over next season.
"I've never had any contact with any club because I have never applied for any other jobs," he said.
"I have had opportunities to leave which in hindsight I probably should have taken, but I have always enjoyed a good relationship with the chairman.
"He has done well for me and vice-versa and I have never touted myself for jobs. I've always been happy to be at Harrogate.
"Now this will come into the open about me leaving, we will have to wait and see.
"I want to stay managing.
I feel that I have done a good job over the years and I want to continue that going forwards." (......)

EAGLES POSTPONE OSTER TALKS
Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock has revealed he has yet to open talks with midfielder John Oster over a new contract.
Oster, who is currently sidelined with a neck injury, will be out of contract in the summer having signed a six-month deal in January.
"We will make a decision nearer the end of the season and we have told him that," Warnock told the Croydon Guardian.
"He has done something to his neck and is agony at the moment. We don't know what he has done or how he has done it but it doesn't look like he will be available this week."

Fulham's Dacourt has great sympathy for Leeds

Fulham midfielder Ollie Dacourt has great sympathy for former club Leeds United.

Dacourt told fulhamfc.com: "It’s very sad, it really is. When I think about the time I was there we had such a great team. It’s a pity because the fans don’t deserve to be in that position.

"You forget just how good that team was – a lot of people tipped us to overtake Manchester United at the top. Out of all the teams that I have played for, they were the side with the best team-spirit. I watch them when I get the chance and I think they’ve done ok this season. Hopefully it won’t be long before they’re back in the top division."
