Vil nevne at Kevin Blackwells Sheff Utd ikveld rykket opp på andre plass i CCC etter en sterk seier borte mot opprykksrival Reading, den 15. bortekampen på rad uten tap for Blackwells gutter. Imponerende!  :)

BOWYER PUTS FUTURE ON HOLD
On-loan Birmingham midfielder Lee Bowyer says he will wait until the end of the season before deciding his future.
Bowyer joined Blues from West Ham in January and is looking to help the club earn promotion back to the Premier League.
The 32-year-old is out of contract at West Ham in the summer and has been tipped to sign a permanent deal at St Andrews.
However, the former Leeds man wants to focus on Birmingham's promotion push, rather than worrying about his own situation.
"I'll have to weigh up my options and go from there, but at the moment I'm not even looking that far forward," Bowyer told the club's official website.
"I'm looking to do what I came here for and that's to help Birmingham get into the Premier League.
"I am enjoying it here and I still feel as though I've got a lot to give. I'm still getting box-to-box and I've played regularly so fitness wise I'm fine."

Extent of Killa's injury unknown
Sheffield United defender Matt Kilgallon could be out for the remainder of the campaign.
The 25-year-old seemed to pick up a niggle in Good Friday's win over Reading but the former Leeds man was able to continue and it soon took it's toll when he sat out United's 0:0 stalemate with Nottingham Forest. The defender could be out for the rest of the season and will go for a scan tomorrow (Tuesday).
Manager Kevin Blackwell said: "Killa jarred his knee during the game with Reading and it is more serious than first thought, so credit to him for staying on. Him missing is not ideal but Leigh Bromby has been magnificent when he has come in."

Blast from the Past: Gary Sprake: Leeds
Leeds United legend Gary Sprake talks to Givemefootball

There was once a time when Leeds united were the best team in England and one of the main men responsible for that was Gary Sprake. The goalkeeper was a Don Revie stalwart and appeared over 500 times for the club as well as making 37 appearances for Wales during his career.

Leeds were never universally popular, despite their successes, as their well-organised style didn’t always result in classic encounters. However, a 7-0 win over Southampton and a 6-1 triumph over Manchester United during Revie’s reign proved that there was a lot of class within his squad that was packed full of international talent.

With Leeds currently languishing in League One, givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson spoke exclusively to Sprake about his career in another of our series of Blasts From The Past.

HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND AT LEEDS?
I spent 12 years at Leeds and won the First Division title once, Second Division once, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, one Charity Shield and one FA Cup Final. We also lost twice in FA Cup finals too! I certainly didn’t expect that when I arrived at Leeds, who were a Division Two side at the time, back in 1962.

WHEN DID YOU MAKE YOUR DEBUT?
My first game was away at Southampton as a sixteen and a half year old and I was flown out to Southampton Airport. I was due to play for the Northern Intermediate League side but got a phone call as the first choice keeper was injured and I jumped into a taxi to Manchester Airport and Leeds chartered a flight for me to Southampton. Don Revie liked to hire planes in those days for away trips and he was ahead of his time in that respect.

DON REVIE WAS NOTORIOUS FOR HIS DOSSIERS ON THE OPPOSITION WASN’T HE?
His planning and preparation was certainly ahead of his time and he didn’t like to leave anything to chance. No stone was left un-turned and we were always well prepared for the opposition. We were more often than not playing two games a week as we were involved in the European Cup so we would spend five days of the week in a hotel and the other two days at home. We used to eat the best food and he made sure that we only had to worry about our performance on the pitch as everything else was taken care of.

WHEN DID YOU START MAKING A NAME FOR YOURSELF AT ELLAND ROAD?
We just survived relegation to the old Division three in 1962 and I can recall we travelled to Swansea and Don threw me, Paul Reaney, Rod Johnson and Norman Hunter into the side and that was one of the turning points. I went on to play 510 games for Leeds and we all stayed in the team for a very long time.

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?
My biggest highlight was winning my first international cap for Wales at the age of 18. We played against a Scotland side containing the likes of Denis Law and Jim Baxter at Hampden Park. Domestically, the biggest highlight for me was winning the First Division at Anfield. We needed to get a result in the penultimate game of the season and we managed to draw 0-0 and the Liverpool supporters gave us a standing ovation and made us go on a lap of honour. We had a fierce rivalry with Liverpool at that time but we had total respect for each other.

John Stiles â€" Son of Nobby
Still proud to think of Dad’s fantastic achievements

John Stiles played over 150 League games for Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers with his last League game on loan at Rochdale, while he also rounded off his career playing Non League and for Ireland's Shamrock Rovers and Canada's Vancouver Whitecaps; but with his father having World Cup and European Cup winners medals in his pocket John, now 44, was destined always to be referred to as Son of Nobby.

Q: Was it a handicap in sport being the son of a world famous father?
A: What my dad did as a 5ft 5 1/2in midfielder who could not see very well but had his hand on two of the greatest football trophies in the world, is just simply a source of great pride to me.  He was regarded in the game worldwide as so good at what he did and so single-minded. He won the ball and gave it to a teammate, and never tried to elaborate unnecessarily. My dad and his pal Alan Ball were the engine room of the most successful England team of all time, and that team was respected worldwide, and will never be forgotten.

Q: What are the best memories of your own career?
A: Scoring on my home League debut for Leeds, and playing in the quarter finals of the FA Cup, although we failed in our bid for a final place when beaten by Coventry City in the semis.

Q: If you could have been successful in any other sport what would you choose?
A: I'd have loved to have been a top rank golfer. I so enjoy watching Tiger Woods play, and the way he conducts himself.  He wants so badly to win, and it clearly means so much to him. He is just simply a great credit to pro sport.  I love the game and he is a great example.

Q: Can the England football team win another World Cup?
A: We need another Sir Alf Ramsey in order to win the trophy again, because despite the fact that we have got good players we just cannot get it all together. But I must say that I think we've made the best step forward for a long time in Fabio Capello being made the boss. He really impresses me because almost all the great World Cup teams world wide have had great defences first and foremost, and he already has that aspect right and generally shown an impressive philosophy in the way he runs the national team, and has recaptured the ‘England spirit’.

Q: Like many top footballers, your profession now is as a comedian and after dinner speaker.  Have you had any embarrassing moments on the circuit?
A: I suppose you could say that being told I was an Austin Powers lookalike was embarrassing enough; but I mustn't complain at taking a  bit of stick because in the dressing room I was noted for doing take-offs of other players and even the manager.

Q: And finally: who was your favourite, the man you would have liked to have emulated as a player?
A: I've already mentioned my obvious choice in talking about my father, but I have no difficulty in keeping the question in the family as well by naming Johnny Giles, my mother's brother.  He was the brains behind the Leeds United team, and was absolutely fantastic in everything he did on  the field, while if I had to name a ‘foreigner’ I'd say Graeme Souness, the great Liverpool midfielder and one of my heroes.  He was certainly no shrinking violet, and a great player in every aspect of the game.

LEVEIN SILENT OVER CADAMARTERI LINK
Dundee United boss Craig Levein has refused to comment on reports he is interested in bringing former Everton striker Danny Cadamarteri to Tannadice.
Levein watched the 29-year-old - who he previously signed while in charge of Leicester - playing for Huddersfield against Carlisle on Monday.
The United manager is in the market for a frontman after Jon Daly was ruled out for a year with a cruciate ligament injury.
Cadamarteri, an ex-England Under-21 international, is out of contract at the end of the season and would be available for free.
But Levein said in the Evening Telegraph: "I'm not going to comment on speculation.
"It was the same last year when we were being linked with this player and that player and, to be honest, it drove me nuts. When we have any news, the fans can rest assured, I'll let them know."
Levein brought Cadamarteri to Leicester in 2007 after the player had served a six-month ban from the game for failing a drugs test.
Cadamarteri, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, has scored just twice this season in 33 appearances for League One Huddersfield. (PA)

Former Brazil skipper Roque Junior expresses interest in Australia

Former Brazil captain and World Cup winner Roque Junior has expressed a desire to come and play in Australia’s A-League.
Reports have indicated that his former teammate Denilson is on the verge of signing a deal with Perth Glory, and it is believed that Roque Junior is even more keen than Denilson to make the move down under.
The players management group - Entourage Football Services â€" have confirmed that Roque Junior is keen to play in Australia.
“He’s more keen than Denilson to come to Australia,” John Denison of Entourage told Goal.com.
“He’s still a great central defender, he came to us and told us he wants to come to Australia.
“He wants to bring a player with him; he sees Australia as a great secondary territory where he can develop players.
“He looks fit and trim and if you go to Youtube there’s an interview of him from last week and he looks fantastic.
“Sydney FC should have a Roque Junior now that Popovic has gone, because he’s not going to cost as much as Popovic and you’re going to end up with an ex-Brazil captain sitting at the back of your defence.
“He’ll bring in an audience.
“But the clubs ask themselves “Can we get someone for less?” and that’s not the way they should be thinking.”

Draw card Fowler has Asia interested in Nth Qld
The addition of former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler to the North Queensland Fury squad has Asian clubs lining up to play friendlies.
A three-match tour of Malaysia and Singapore has been mooted for June and although the deal has not been finalised, Fury chairman Don Matheson said Fowler’s name has helped a lot.
"We all knew Robbie would add a lot of value to the club," he said.
"Over in Asia it would be a very attractive proposition to bring Robbie over.
"Our football department has definitely mapped out a program of between 10-13 games (but) there's nothing we can confirm at the moment."

Fowler not leaving any stone unturned in North Queensland Fury training
North Queensland Fury star signing Robbie Fowler says he wants to make sure everything is perfect once the new A-League season kicks off.
The former Liverpool striker has commenced training with the new franchise and is intent on preparing correctly this pre-season.
"I am here early to make sure I get plenty of hard work in,” said Fowler.
“The pre-season games don't start until May, but I want to be ready for that. I want to make sure I get everything right."

Beijing give Griffiths just two days leave for birth of child

Beijing Guoan have given striker Joel Griffiths just two days to attend the birth of his first child.
Griffiths’ wife Bianca will be induced on April 29 but Beijing have games on both the 27th April and 1st May giving him very little time to return to Newcastle for the birth.
"They had a four-man meeting last night before they would give him permission to come back," Griffiths’ manager John Denison said yesterday.
"They have stipulated he must play for his club on April 27 and he can fly out the next day.
"His wife is being induced on April 29 but he has to be back on a plane the next day so he's there for the game against big rivals Shanghai Shenhua (May 1)."

Alan Smith Wants Key Role At Newcastle

Former Leeds youngster Alan Smith has told his gaffer that he wants to be a key figure at St. James' Park.
Newcastle manager Alan Shearer has recently spoken to his club's official website regarding Alan Smith's future at the club.
Smith has suffered from injury for the majority of this season, but recently returned for the Magpies as a substitute in the 1-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.
"I was very pleased with Alan when he came on," manager Alan Shearer told Nufc.premiumtv.co.uk.
"He came on and did a job and I was happy with him. I've spoken to him and he is desperate to play his part."
The 28-year-old Smith was tipped to become the 'next Roy Keane' during his spell at Manchester United, after Sir Alex revealed that Keane saw a lot of himself in the player, but his status in the anchor role was short lived.
Smith was sold to Newcastle United in August 2007 for a fee of â,¤6 million and although the utility man has failed to notch a Premier League goal for the Toon so far, Shearer has stated that he has faith in him.
"It's a case of number of games with Alan though, because he's not played a tremendous amount. But he will play a part and we'll have to wait and see whether that's from the start or coming off the bench."

Portsmouth boss pleased with influence of assistant Kidd
Portsmouth boss Paul Hart has been paying credit to his assistant Brian Kidd for his part in gaining 13 valuable points for Pompey in the last eight games.
"He's been terrific. He's done everything I hoped he would here.
"His experience and knowledge on the training field have done us all a lot of good and I think he's been a terrific signing, my only one at Portsmouth.
"I have known him for years and he's a great friend. We first met way back when he was playing for Arsenal and Everton and he used to knock me about on the field but we've never been at the same club at the same time."

Woodgate focused on Tottenham rather than England
Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate says he is not worried about his international future and is quite content to focus on club football.
Woodgate seems to have been frozen out of Fabio Capello’s England squad but insists at this stage it is not a priority and he is not worried.
“I'm not, really. It's just about the way I'm playing for Spurs. That's enough for me,” he said.
"I just want to win things. We know we have a good squad here. We are one point off seventh place and I fancy our chances of finishing there. We can do it."

Toronto FC coach Carver fined for referee criticism
The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee has fined Toronto FC coach John Carver $750 for public criticism of MLS officiating.

Carver said, "When your job is threatened, and on the line, because of decisions like that, then I've got to say something, I'm having a go at the referee today".

STORRIE TAKES HART FROM TURNAROUND
Paul Hart could be asked stay in charge at Portsmouth next season after chief executive Peter Storrie expressed his admiration for the way he has changed the club's fortunes.
Future plans remain unknown because Pompey owner Alexandre Gaydamak has made it clear he is looking to sell the debt-laden club.
There have been no reports of potential buyers and the Franco-Russian has said he will only sell to someone who can give full assurance of having the team's on-field fortunes at heart.
But the influential Storrie has praised Hart, who was promoted from head of youth development when Tony Adams was sacked in February, and his assistant, former England coach Brian Kidd.
The pair have gleaned 13 points from nine matches since taking over and have lost twice - to Chelsea and Manchester United.
They can all but secure Pompey's top-flight survival with victory at troubled Newcastle on Monday night, which would put them nine points clear of the relegation zone with four games to go.
Storrie said: "In many ways Paul and Brian are an amusing combination - Paul with his experience and (his effect) as a disciplinarian on occasions, and Brian with his fantastic coaching knowledge.
"Together they have created something special for the players.
"The reaction they have had from senior players like Sol Campbell, David James and Sylvain Distin, people who have been there and done it all, is plain to see.
"And the way they have turned things around here in such a short space of time is magnificent."
There are major decisions to be made even if Pompey, who play Arsenal, Blackburn, Sunderland and Wigan after Newcastle, reach the all-important 40 points on Sunday.
Seventeen players, including skipper Campbell, midfielder Sean Davis, defender Herman Hreidarsson and loanees Jermaine Pennant and Armand Traore are out of contract in the summer.
But Hart believes now is not the time for contract talks.
"Contracts will be discussed at the appropriate time," he said.
"That's not now and I don't even know if I will be involved. I came in for one game (against Manchester City) a couple of months ago and it has been extended to the end of the season although I've got three years on my other (academy) job.
"But as far as the first team is concerned it is all about getting to the end of the season and staying up. It would be foolish and disrespectul to everybody involved for me to fantasise about what might happen next season." (PA)

Carver resigns as TFC coach
Saturday, April 25, 2009

MLS: Carver steps down
Head coach John Carver was absent from the Toronto FC sidelines last time out. On Saturday, he disappeared completely.
The MLS team announced Carver was leaving for personal reasons. "His resignation will take effect immediately," the club said in a seven-paragraph statement.
Toronto (2-2-2) said no further comment would be made until after Sunday's home game against Kansas City.
"I've got nothing to say," managing director of soccer Mo Johnston told The Canadian Press. "I'll make a statement after the game."
A source close to the club declined to detail Carver's reasons for leaving but confirmed it was for personal reasons. But those can cover a multitude of issues.
Bottom line? Carver's MLS ride was often a rollercoaster of emotion and he suddenly and unexpectedly decided to get off.
The blunt Englishman had raised eyebrows when he was not pitchside for Toronto's 1-0 win over Chivas on Wednesday and did not meet the media Friday
In its statement, the team said assistant coaches Chris Cummins and Nick Dasovic will handle coaching duties Sunday and that a decision on the coaching position will be made early next week.
"The team is in great hands and I know they will all keep working towards our goal of reaching the playoffs," Carver said in the statement.
"I have worked with some top international players in my time, and we've got some here in Toronto, but this group is the best bunch of guys I've ever worked with. I also want to thank the fans, they are some of the best without a doubt and I hope they keep supporting this club for a long time to come."
No real explanation was ever given for Carver's decision to abandon the sidelines.
"John obviously has his reasons and I don't want to talk about it," Cummins told reporters after the Chivas game.
"He just wanted to sit upstairs," a club spokesman said in an e-mail the next day. "I would imagine he'll be talking about his decision at training (Friday)."
But it was Cummings who spoke to the media Friday, suggesting Carver might be similarly hidden from view Sunday.
Carver, 44, was respected by his players, who said they always knew where they stood with him.
"He's a players' manager," co-captain Jim Brennan,TFC's first-ever signing, said prior to kickoff this season. "He tells you how it is. The guys have got a great deal of respect for him. Since Day 1 when he came in here, he's had a plan and everybody is on board with it and everybody's heading in the right direction. It's great that the players have a manager that they want to play for. He's been a breath of fresh air."
Carver wore his heart on his sleeve and that sometimes left him at odds with referees and the league. He was fined US$750 by the league earlier this week for criticizing the ref who awarded a penalty to Dallas last weekend in a Toronto loss.
In March 2008, he was irate when he was featured in a DVD sent to game officials for his touchline Behaviour in a previous game.
"I'm a very passionate guy and I love the game. And that's the way I am," he said at the time. "And apparently they don't want that in the MLS. They don t want passionate people. They don't want people who care for the game and wear their heart on the sleeve."
"They want me to sit down on the chair, in the dugout with my arms folded, my legs crossed and just be a nice little boy and get a suntan," he continued. "Well, no. If that's what they want to get, I'll get on a plane and fly home again."
After opening the 2009 season on the road with a win in Kansas City and tie in Columbus, Carver was pained by a lacklustre performance in a 2-0 home loss to expansion Seattle. He was brutally honest in his post-match assessment, saying he could not think of a single player who deserved praise
"We've had our backsides kicked. I've got no excuses, none whatever -- beaten by the better team. And now I've got to roll my sleeves up with them lot in there and put it right," he said.
His team tied and lost to Dallas next but rebounded to edge Chivas.
Carver was hired as head coach of Toronto FC on Feb. 1, 2008, taking over from Mo Johnston who was given a new title while having his front office duties expanded.
The team was 11-15-10 under Carver. But it opened the season with plenty of optimism, thanks to the addition of Canadian defender Adrian Serioux and star midfielder Dwayne De Rosario and talented draft picks Stefan Frei and Sam Cronin,
"We would sincerely like to thank John for his work with Toronto FC during his time here," Johnston said in the statement. "We appreciate all his hard work in helping this team become more competitive, and we wish him all the best."
There were question about Carver's future when Alan Shearer, a close friend, took over as interim manager of Newcastle. Carver played and coached at the Magpies, but the issue faded away as Carver concentrated on his TFC duties.
Carver also played for Cardiff City, and coached at Leeds United and Luton Town.
At Newcastle, he was hired as director of the team's centre of excellence, moving on to become youth team coach, first team coach and then assistant manager under Sir Bobby Robson
