Fornuftige ord.

Marching on together..

LEEDS UNITED are tracking Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp as a possible replacement for Jermaine Beckford.
The 26-year-old is in demand after netting the winner as Leeds knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup with Newcastle United heading the list of interested clubs.

Magpies manager Chris Hughton sees the striker as the man to shoot the Championship leaders back into the top flight with the Toon Army having had a £1.25m bid rejected before Christmas.

Newcastle have intimated they are unwilling to go above £1.5m for a player who will be available on a free transfer come the summer when his contract runs out.

However, with Geremi having yesterday left St James' Park for Turkish club Ankaragucu to free around £60,000-a-week from the wage bill and other clubs having been alerted to Beckford's potential by his winner at Old Trafford, Hughton appreciates time is of the essence.

Sources in the North East have indicated the Magpies want to tie up a deal by early next week at the latest with a possible solution to the impasse being to offer United a substantial seven-figure down payment with an additional sum payable should Newcastle win promotion.

Leeds have remained steadfast in their determination to hold on to 20-goal Beckford with manager Simon Grayson continually stressing his desire to retain the striker for the entire season.

It was a point he reiterated in the wake of Sunday's triumph at Old Trafford, though this time the United manager did qualify the statement by adding: "If that does happen (Beckford leaving), we will have to have replacements lined up."

The Yorkshire Post understands this desire not to be left short in attack is behind the club's scouts having spent recent weeks scouring the Football League.

And Sharp, who is on a season-long loan at Doncaster Rovers from Bramall Lane but can be recalled if the Blades receive an acceptable bid, is believed to top of Grayson's wanted list.

One potential stumbling block is the south Yorkshire club wanting to recoup much of the £2m fee then manager Bryan Robson spent bringing the one-time Blades apprentice back to the club from Scunthorpe United in 2007.

Sharp, who has 18 months remaining on his deal with United, has been in stunning form for Doncaster in the Championship this season with 10 goals in 17 appearances, six of which have come in the last seven games.

The 23-year-old's form has been so impressive that Barnsley are understood to have made an enquiry late last year only for the striker to indicate a willingness to stay at the Keepmoat where Rovers' passing approach has suited his playing style.

A move to Elland Road may, however, prove a more attractive proposition with Leeds, who have also been linked with Scunthorpe United's Gary Hooper since interest in their top scorer first emerged, firmly on course to win promotion.

Any transfer movement would depend on Beckford leaving Leeds and, in that respect, the ball is firmly in Newcastle's court.

Publicly, Hughton is suggesting the United striker is one of several targets interesting the Magpies but sources insist Beckford is the man he wants.

The Newcastle manager said: "I wasn't at Old Trafford to see Jermaine, and there is no deal done yet. All we can say is that we are working very hard on bringing in new players, and I am very confident that we will get them.

"His profile now goes up, because the (Manchester United) game was on television, but everyone knows that this is just one game. Whether he had done well or badly, he would still be a talented player. He is one of a few players we are interested in."

Newcastle have failed to score in the two games since Marlon Harewood left St James' Park, the striker being recalled by Aston Villa after a successful loan spell on Tyneside.

Hughton had been hoping to extend the deal but Villa chief Martin O'Neill insisted only a permanent move would be allowed.

Leeds' victory at Old Trafford means not only Beckford's reputation has been enhanced but that of Grayson, too.

He is likely to receive admiring glances from several club chairmen as the managerial merry-go-round continues spinning after Burnley confirmed yesterday that Owen Coyle had held talks with Bolton Wanderers over a possible move to the Reebok to replace Gary Megson.

However, the United manager has a stern warning for anyone wanting to tempt him away from his native Yorkshire. He said: "My commitment to Leeds United has never been in question. I left Blackpool a year ago to join the football club I supported.

"Leeds is a fantastic football club and I am not interested in going anywhere else."

Stoke, Birmingham join scramble for Leeds Cup hero Beckford
Leeds United FA Cup hero Jermaine Beckford now has Premiership clubs chasing his signature.
Newcastle are favourites for the Leeds hitman, but after dumping Manchester United out of the Cup on Sunday, Beckford now has Premiership clubs chasing him.
The Daily Star says Beckford’s strike that dumped United has dramatically moved the goalposts with several Premier League clubs lining up a move.
Wigan, Stoke and moneybags Birmingham are all expected to join the race for his signature.

Stockport Keeper Linked Again
Town have again been linked with Stockport County keeper Owain Fôn Williams, who is also said to be interesting Leeds, Sunderland, Burnley and Sheffield United. Leeds are said to be winning the race for the 22-year-old’s signature.
Stockport are in administration and Williams, who has been called up to the Wales full squad but is yet to win a senior cap, is likely to leave the club during January along with a number of his team-mates.
Williams joined County from Crewe in the summer of 2008 having failed to make a senior appearance for the Railwaymen.
Boss Roy Keane has said on a number of occasions that he likes to have three senior keepers in his squad. Brian Murphy has signed on a Bosman from Bohemians in Ireland and Arran Lee-Barrett is set to sign a new contract later this month, but with Richard Wright out with a knee injury until the end of March, Keane currently has only two keepers to choose from.
However, it is more likely that the Blues would look for a loan stopper to cover for Wright until the former England keeper, whose Town deal is up in the summer, is fit again, rather than make another permanent signing.

BREAKING NEWS

Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford puts in transfer request

Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request, his agent has told BBC Radio 5 live.

Beckford, 26, scored his 20th goal of the seaspm as they clinched a shock 1-0 win at Manchester United in round three of the FA Cup on Sunday.

He has been linked with a move away from the League One leaders to Championships side Newcastle.

Beckford, who joined the Elland Road outfit from non-League Wealdstone in 2006, is out of contract in the summer.

Unfortunately this was always on the cards and wasn't helped by the section of fans who still give him stick despite all the goals he has scored

Leeds manager Simon Grayson said after the FA Cup win at Old Trafford that they were not looking to sell Beckford, but that "money talks".

And he added that if they did let him go, he would not go cheaply.

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has already spoken of his desire to take Beckford to Tyneside but says he will be patient in his pursuit of the striker.

Vasko eyes Leeds deal: Hungary international set for Whites trial
Ujpest defender Tamas Vasko is hoping to win a deal with Leeds United when he links up with the League One side on trial.
Whites boss Simon Grayson is set to run the rule over the Hungarian defender, who has previously been on loan with Bristol City, next week.
Vasko had been set to link up with Leeds earlier, but the wintery conditions sweeping through England and across Europe have delayed his trip.
The 25-year-old saw Leeds' famous FA Cup win at Manchester United and is hoping to win over Grayson with his ability.
"I found out on the last day of 2009 that I'm going and I've received permission to travel by the owner of Ujpest," he told Nemzeti Sport.
"I hope that I'll have the chance to prove my abilities. I watched how Leeds defeated Manchester United on television in the FA Cup. It was a superb cup result.
"I've already played in England so I know how it is to be a sportsman over there so my aim is to get a contract after my trial."
Vasko's agent has confirmed Leeds' interest in his client and that the League One side are on the look-out for defensive reinforcements.
"It's true that Leeds United have shown an interest in him but he's not in England yet," stated agent Janos Hrutka.
"It's not a secret that the English club would like to sign a central defender.
"Vasko played for Bristol City in season 2007/2008, so he's not unknown to English clubs

Neppe. M.h.t. bakteppet med Bosman, request, konkrete bud, m.m. tror Bates setter pengene fremst!

Leedsulf

Leeds vil rykke opp...

Leeds United can confirm that Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request.

The transfer request was handed in on December 30.

By handing in a transfer request it clearly indicates that the player wants to leave Leeds United.

However, that will only be allowed to happen in the event that it is decided to be in the best interests of Leeds United.

The best interests of Leeds United involve receiving both an acceptable transfer fee and securing a suitable replacement to ensure his departure does not have an adverse effect on the club's overall aim of securing promotion back to the Coca-Cola Championship.
