Leeds United: McCormack eager to be given Whites striker roleRoss McCormack says he is ready to “step up†and provide a solution to Leeds United’s goalscoring problems after helping to inspire a morale-lifting win over Bournemouth.
The Scotland international appeared as a striker for the first time this season in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory and wants to revert to the position on a permanent basis in the hope of regaining the form which saw him score 19 times in his second year at Leeds.
McCormack endured a mixed bag against Bournemouth, missing an early chance from close range and seeing a penalty saved by visiting goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, but he struck early in the second half to set up a timely win.
United went into Tuesday’s match on the back of three straight league defeats and McCormack’s goal was his first in six games, ending a spell in which Leeds have looked increasingly short of potency up front.
Their weak attacking record led manager Brian McDermott to enter the loan market last week in search of a striker and a winger but McCormack hopes his midweek effort and a change of role will allow him to cure a pressing concern.
“It was a striker’s goal,†McCormack said, “and I’ve said since I came to the club that I’m a striker. I can play in other roles but I really enjoy playing up front. I know that if I play up front I’ll score and I’m definitely ready to step up and chip in.
“I can’t speak for the other players and say what they’re going to do but what I can say is that two years ago when I played up front, before Neil Warnock came in, I scored 15 or 16 goals before February. I believe that if we get balls in the box I’ll score and hopefully I can prove that in the coming months.â€
Bournemouth were handicapped by the first-half dismissal of keeper Ryan Allsop – sent off for a foul on Noel Hunt which conceded the penalty missed by McCormack – but they fought back to level the match through a Lewis Grabban volley on 73 minutes.
Dominic Poleon’s late strike prevented another set-back and brought relief for a manager and a squad who were under mounting pressure.
Leeds head to Derby County this weekend for Steve McClaren’s first game as manager of the Rams and McCormack, who has been included in Scotland’s squad for their World Cup qualifier against Croatia on October 15, said: “We’ve restored some confidence. We can look to kick on. I don’t know if heads had dropped but sometimes confidence takes a knock when you’ve been in games and you lose them.
“If we’d gone to Derby and only drawn (against Bournemouth) then the confidence would have gone down a notch again. It won’t be easy on Saturday but this result gives us a springboard to go and put on a good show.â€
