Man ser mulighetene!!!

I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

Half term report :)

LUFC Leeds United - Half Term Report

With the championship at the halfway stage Vital Leeds United does it`s half term report on the season so far.

Leeds have taken 35 points from their opening 23 games and have produced a mixed bag of form since the start of the season.

Neil Warnock was busy in the summer, bringing in eleven new players prior to the big kick off and there was also the emergence of youngster Sam Byram, who impressed during pre-season and lined up in the side on the opening day.

An opening day win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, who came down from the Premier League last season, gave the Leeds faithful renewed optimism as Leeds fought for every ball.

Leeds won just one of their next five games and the eternal pessimists amongst the Leeds fans were once again contemplating a season of struggles and woes.

The run culminated in a 3-2 home defeat to Hull City but in true Leeds fashion, they then went on an unbeaten run of four games in the championship, winning three of these.

Leeds were also enjoying a good run in the Capital One League cup and they beat Premier League highflyers Everton 2-1 at Elland Road to book their place in the fourth round.

Jekyll and Hyde Leeds then went on a run of seven games without a win, picking up just three points in the process and leaving them in eighteenth place in the championship.

Despite their poor league form they continued their run in the league cup, beating Premier League side Southampton 3-0.

The Whites went into the next week facing three very tough looking fixtures starting with top of the table Crystal Palace.

They were given a huge boost ahead of the game with the news that GFH Capital had finally agreed a deal to take over the club and they were boosted even more when Warnock was able to bring in Alan Tate and Jerome Thomas on loan from the Premier League.

Leeds broke their poor run with a 2-1 home win over top of the table Crystal Palace and they followed this up four days later with a 1-0 home win over third placed Leicester City.

A West Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield Town the following Saturday was next up against former boss Simon Grayson as well as midfielder Adam Clayton, who would have both been looking to prove a point against their former employees.

Despite trailing early on, Leeds hit back to produce on of their best performances of the season and make the short journey home with all three points in a 4-2 win.

Once again, just as Leeds fans were beginning to believe, a lacklustre performance at Derby County saw their three match winning run come to an abrupt end in a 3-1 defeat.

This was followed by what looked another tricky week, with three games at Elland Road.

In form Ipswich Town were first up but Leeds had no trouble putting the Suffolk side to the sword with a 2-0 win.

Premier League big boys Chelsea were next up in a mouth-watering League Cup Quarter Final clash.

Leeds went in at the break ahead thanks to a swift move that was clinically finished off by Luciano Becchio.

It all went down hill after the break, as Chelsea showed their Premier League class scoring five times.

The week was finished with a clash against another side in the top three in the table. Middlesbrough came to Elland Road just three points off the top spot and looked like they were going to return to Teesside with all three points as they led 1-0 close to the break.

Once again though, cometh the hour cometh the man this season and Luciano Becchio scored one of his best goals for the club to bring the sides level on the stroke of half time.

Becchio scored his second of the afternoon and his seventeenth of the season in the second half to make it five wins from the last six games and move Leeds onto the coattails of the play-off places.

More importantly, Elland Road looks once again like becoming a fortress, something it hasn`t been since their return to the championship in 2010.

The win over Middlesbrough was their fourth in a row at home, something they haven`t done since the opening months of last season.

What makes it more impressive is it has come against the form sides. Palace were top, Leicester and Middlesbrough were both in third and Ipswich were the form side in the division.

At the halfway point, Leeds are in eighth place with 35 points from their opening 23 games.

It has certainly been a mixed bag performance wise. The championship is once again as unpredictable as ever and if Leeds can take their current form and consistency into the second half of the season, then anything is possible.

The tightness in this league was summed up in Leeds first sixteen games of the season. Not one of the opening sixteen games of the season were won by more than one goal for either side.

What Leeds must do now is something they haven`t done in the last two January transfer windows and that is invest on a sustained promotion push. That is going to be the first test for our new owners.

Warnock feels he only wants to add a striker to the five players he has had on loan in the past month but there are other areas of the pitch, which desperately need strengthening.

A left back must be a priority. We have used four different players in this position this season and Warnock has preferred Lee Peltier playing out of position at left back than three recognised players in this position.

Whilst I think Alan Tate has brought organisation to the back four since his arrival on loan from Swansea City, his clear lack of pace is a worry and we need someone with pace and experience. We are always going to score goals, so we need to be watertight at the back.

Another strong central midfielder to partner Rodolph Austin when he returns from injury would make us formidable in the middle of the park.

Once again, loan player Michael Tonge is looking like a likely signing in January but I do not see him as the answer to the problem whilst the likes of Michael Brown and David Norris are good to have when required as back up but not starting week in week out.

We do need another poacher in the box. Someone who is proven at this level. Becchio has already shown this season that he will have runs of form and we need quality in reserve.

Bring in these three players and it will not only give us a strong starting eleven but the squad will keep them on their toes and when called upon, we will have a bench that can change games.

Overall so far, we are closer to the play-offs than I would have predicted before the opening game. We haven`t exactly been playing really well, so to be just two points outside the play-offs, we once again have a tremendous chance to push on in the second half of the season. As Leeds fans, we all know, we never do anything easy.

“I must admit, I do think we are currently a little bit above where I thought we’d be, if I’m honest. With the team we’d got, I thought we’d be a little bit lower down.

“But it shows what can be done. We have a group of lads who do not know when they are beaten. We have people who can play different positions and energy and experience.”

Leeds United will always have a special place in my heart....and a bunch of men and women who enjoy speed and excitement.

There is hoping...

Ellers:
Hjemme 8 2 3 19-17  26 poeng
Borte       3 3 7  19-25  12 poeng
