Sneak insight into Leeds United new way to play?(nå er det nok ikke i kveld men i morgen første pre-season kamp spilles)
With the following Tweet and video clip, has WALMOT3 given Leeds fans a quick glimpse about just how they intend to play the game both for tonight’s opening friendly against Harrogate and the upcoming Championship campaign?
The short, 30-second clip ends with a crisp, quick passing movement that sees Sam Byram pass across field to what looks like Tommaso Bianchi (I am watching it on a small screen) who then, after a controlling touch, spreads the ball wide amidst shouts of “can you play forwards?†This passing move then finishes with a neat cross-field ball over the back of the defence.
It has been much written about that Uwe Rösler is intending to play a quick brand of football, a high-octane pressing approach if you will, that encourages Leeds to play the ball in their opponent’s defensive third of the field, meaning that they are always on the back foot. Patient passing, it appears, will give way to rapid pressing as Leeds United look to pressurise their opponents.
With Leeds’ midfield being underwhelming in terms of the number of goals they created, this high-pressure approach is maybe seen as a way to counter that disappointing aspect of Leeds’ performance last season. Yes Leeds’ midfield did carry the goal-scoring record to some degree, none more so than Alex Mowatt (nine goals), but it is in the provision of goals that Leeds seemed to have a problem of sorts. With the £2.7m signature of Chris Wood, and hopefully the signings of some dedicated wide players/wingers, maybe the onus in the Leeds United midfield mentality will shift from one of scoring to one of providing.
More will no doubt be revealed in tonight’s friendly against Harrogate Town at their Wetherby Road ground.
