Burnley braced for stimulating Leeds United test.

BURNLEY manager Sean Dyche is preparing to face a stimulated and galvanised side in Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday lunch-time.

The relegated Clarets make the short trip over the Pennines for their first league game after relegation last term and Dyche acknowledges it will be a real test.

He said: “Leeds have had a change of manager and way of thinking which may stimulate them, but we’re focused on ourselves.”

Burnley are expected to be without new signing Matt Lowton and Fredrik Ulvestad as they get their Championship campaign underway.

Lowton is struggling with a shin problem which kept him out of the final friendly at home to Bradford City last Saturday â€" a game in which Norwegian international Ulvestad suffered a twisted ankle.

Burnley have been rebuffed after making an enquiry about signing Scottish international Grant Hanley, captain of bitter rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Meanwhile, Football League figures have revealed that Leeds had the top average away support in the Football League last season at an impressive 2,774.

In second place were Middlesbrough with 2,237 with Derby County (2,165) being the only other side whose average away following was over 2,000 last term.

Leeds v Burnley

Sean Dyche aims to lead Burnley back to the top flight at the first time of asking
I hope they can sort it out down at Elland Road. It's been a car wreck down there; they're underachieving and yet they've got those magnificent fans.

It's Yorkshire v Lancashire - an extra bit of spice - but I fancy Burnley strongly in this one. They've been up and down but I think Sean Dyche is an excellent manager. I know them inside out because I used to live up there and I reckon they'll ride the departure of Danny Ings, no problem. They've got a really good squad.

OLLIE PREDICTS: 0-1 (Sky Bet odds 13/2)

LEEDS VS BURNLEY. MATCH PREVIEW AND CHANGES SINCE ROTHERHAM

by Charlie Sopp on August 6, 2015
CHAMPIONSHIP

I don’t think I was ever this happy to write a match preview as tonight. It seems like the weeks have flown by this summer but it also seems an age ago I arrived in the South Stand for the visit of Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United. This time it’s Burnley who will provide stern opposition for a new-look Leeds United squad.

Much has changed since the last game at Elland Road (competitive) First and foremost Massimo Cellino has regained much of his fans who were turning on him despite not actually attending the Rotherham game. The feeling wasn’t great around Elland Road but optimism and excitement is probably at it’s highest for many a year now, and for good reason. We might not be the favourites for promotion, far from it, but we seem to be the hefty underdog but one that is quietly confident.

Probably the biggest change though has been the staff at Elland Road. The much-loved Neil Redfearn was dismissed and replaced by the stern talking Uwe Rosler. Along with Rosler came experienced assistant manager Rob Kelly and off the field Adam Pearson is gaining himself a very very strong following amongst many Leeds fans. Martyn Glover is the new Head of Recruitment, and recruit we have.

On the pitch we welcome Ross Turnbull, Charlie Horton, Sol Bamba, Tom Adeyemi, Stuart Dallas, Chris Wood and Lee Erwin, a very good summers work. Over twice that have departed and the squad looks stronger but smaller. We will also be looking to play a new system, 4-4-3 will be the formation of choice against Burnley I would expect. Uwe Rosler has the players playing a much higher tempo than Neil Redfearn’s side did last season. Redfearn and his players got the job done last season but the football was pretty dull going forward as we struggled to score goals. With Dallas, Erwin and Wood involved this season the attacking football will be more pleasant to watch….I hope.

What team do I expect?

I think many of us have the majority of the team worked out, the only positions I am questioning are right-back and left-wing. Silvestri in the sticks, and Taylor Bamba and Bellusci at the back with either Wootton or Berardi at right-back. Personally I would like to see Gaetano Berardi, but Wootton may well get the nod. In the midfield I expect Tom Adeyemi to play the deep midfield role, a role we couldn’t fill last season effectively. Cook and Mowatt will play further forward and look to support the front three. Byram is certain to play down the right with Wood the focal point up front. I would hope and probably put my money on Dallas getting the nod but Rosler might want to put him on the bench for the first game, Doukara perhaps getting a chance to impress, I’m unsure.

Burnley have lost three of their key players this summer. Danny Ings has departed for Liverpool, Kieran Trippier to Tottenham and skipper Jason Shackell has joined the revolution at Derby, one that I hope collapses under it’s own weight yet again. Burnley have signed Jelle Vossen from Boro, the player will look to prove a point and Tendayi Darikwa from Chesterfirld, a player we were looking very closely at this summer. Burnley are like Ipswich for me, not the most talented in the world but definitely one of the hardest working sides in the country. If we van match the work-rate then we can beat them, if not they could well spoil the part. Scottish pair George Boyd and Scott Arfield will be key for the clarets on the day.

Saturday can’t come soon enough and for once I will not avoid my 4.45am alarm clock on Saturday. Lets hope for a positive result and performance. The atmosphere is sure to be electric.

Tight kamp med få mål: 1-0 (Wood)

BURNLEY: UNITED WELL PREPARED - UWE
Head coach previews our 2015/16 season opener...

Uwe Rosler insists United are "well-prepared" for Saturday’s opening game against Burnley and believes his side "have nothing to lose and everything to win" due to the visitors’ recent Premier League experience.

The televised lunchtime kick-off will see Rosler take to the home dug-out for his first competitive game in charge, with a crowd in the late 20 thousands expected at what the head coach wants to be a “rocking” Elland Road.

“I feel like we are well-prepared and I think the players are full of confidence and optimism,” he said.

“It was important to have a good week â€" and by that I don’t just mean last Saturday (against Everton).

“We had an internal game on Wednesday and optimism is high. All I can ask from myself, my staff and my players is to be as well prepared as we can be.

“We have been very focused.”

Other than knee problems for Luke Murphy and Tommaso Bianchi, Rosler has been pleased to see his side come through a testing pre-season schedule largely unscathed.

“We kept the players on the pitch, which is very important with the small squad we have,” he said.

“We didn’t have many injuries and no soft tissue injuries. That is also credit to my staff and the medical staff with how they look after the players.

“I think we’re well prepared and now the real football starts. When you are well prepared, that means nothing will faze you.

“We purposely chose competitive teams (to play against in pre-season) where it would not be normal if we won the games.

“We accepted we might get beat but we pushed ourselves to the limit. We wanted to be exposed and for the players to deal with it in a manner that brings them forward. Now it’s Burnley.”

And the Clarets, back in the Championship after a solitary season in the Premier League, will provide Rosler’s men with a stern opening day test as they look to compete for a swift top-flight return.

But the United head coach also believes that could work in his favour.

“I like the fact that we are playing another top team,” Rosler said. “I wouldn’t be so comfortable for the first game going to Preston away, for example.

“I feel that having a home game, with a full house and playing a team that has just come down from the Premier League, is a fantastic opportunity for us to test ourselves as a group of young, emerging players.

“They are a Premier League club, they have a Premier League manager and they have Premier League resources.

“When you play against Burnley, you have nothing to lose and everything to win.

“Sean Dyche did a tremendous job winning promotion as an underdog, but I think Sean will be expecting to finish top six and probably top two.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to work and test ourselves against opposition like that.

“I’m not just saying it, I really think that starting against a top team takes a little bit of pressure off us.

“I think that will suit us and I really think that we have a chance of getting a result.”
