Why Barry Douglas will be critical to Leeds United's promotion ambitions this season

An overview of what Barry Douglas is bringing to Leeds United
An overview of what Barry Douglas is bringing to Leeds United
They say good things come to those who wait, and after months of anticipation, Leeds United fans were rewarded with the club’s fifth summer signing in Patrick Bamford on Tuesday.

A window of anxiety and frustration has fast transformed into one of the most promising since the club dropped out of the top flight in 2004.

Arguably the club’s most important addition was their first permanent first-team recruit Barry Douglas.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers defender signed a three-year deal with the Whites last week in a move which significantly strengthens head coach Marcelo Bielsa’s hand just before the new season kicks off this Sunday.

The signing of Douglas is an exceptional bit of business for the club, particularly considering the player’s reported price tag of around £3m after add-ons.

The Whites have secured one of the best left wing-backs in the division, and fans have every right to be excited about the calibre of player the club have recruited, fresh from a superb Championship-winning campaign with Wolves.

Background

Douglas started his career at Livington's youth academy before being released at the age of 16 for not being considered big enough or strong enough.

He went on to join Queen's Park where he began an apprenticeship in refrigeration and air conditioning engineering as a fall back in case a career in football fell through.

He soon rose up the youth ranks and became part of their first-team squad in 2008. Douglas enjoyed a three-year spell at Dundee United in 2010 before leaving to join Polish side Lech Poznan where he went on to win the league title and Polish Super Cup in 2014/15.

Mariusz Rumak on Barry Douglas
The left-footed wing-back left to move to Turkey and join Konyaspor in January 2016 where he played 45 games and went on to win the Turkish Cup.

Douglas returned to Britain and joined Wolves in July 2017 and was signed by manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

It was here where Douglas went on to score five goals and register 14 assists to help the club win the Championship title.

Performance record

The Scotland international scored five league goals in 42 appearances from a left wing-back role last season, and was one of the star performers for the Championship champions.

Douglas’s most impressive statistic is having registered an impressive 14 assists in the Championship last season, no player in the division managed more (former Whites player Robert Snodgrass also notched 14).

Players with the most assists in the Championship 2017/18
Normally a player which such a significant contribution to direct goals scored would be destined for Premier League football, so the Whites have done extremely well in getting the deal over the line so quickly and without any complications.

Glasgow-born Douglas was directly involved (goals + assists) in a goal scored every 179 minutes of Championship football last season.

Essentially a goal every other game, which breaks down into seven crosses, five corners and two free-kicks. An all-round provider if ever there was one.

A breakdown of Barry Douglas's assists in 2017/18
The 28-year-old soon became a Wolves fans’ favourite following a £1m move from Turkish side Konyaspor last July, but the recent arrival of Spaniard Jonny Castro from Atletico Madrid effectively pushed Douglas down the pecking order, and saw Wolves eager to move on the left full-back ahead of their Premier League return.

Bielsa identified United’s left wing-back position as a priority area the club needed to strengthen this summer.

Having studied the Whites’ performances last season, the Argentine will have seen the club experiment with a number of options at left-back.

Gaetano Berardi, Tom Pearce, Laurens De Bock and Stuart Dallas all auditioned for the role, but none were able to convince the new head coach of being his first choice.

United have now recruited one of the most clinical left-footed players in the division last season, and have pulled off a monumental coup of having signed a player who has enjoyed an exceptional spell under Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Douglas was one of the best performing full-backs in the division along with Bristol City’s Joe Bryan.

Douglas thrived at Molineux providing ample chances and attacking phases down the left flank. His ability to track back and tuck into position to close gaps and maintain the team’s shape without the ball also proved effective. It is no coincidence Wolves conceded the joint-fewest goals in the division last season (39).

What Douglas will bring to United

One of Douglas’s many specialities is his quality of deliveries from dead-ball situations.

He has the ability to pick out teammates with precision passes, and whipping dangerous balls into key areas which was used to devastating effect.

Douglas, who earned his first cap for Scotland against Hungary in March, can turn a defender and deliver crosses into the penalty area at pace.

Douglas provides Leeds with a much-needed outlet from the left flank with a bountiful supply of deliveries and crosses.

His game going forward is stronger than his defensive abilities, and comes into his own when driving forward to pin back opposing full-backs, helping the side advance with short, sharp triangle passing and movement and bringing others into play.

A potential Leeds United XI to face Stoke City
He will take up an identical role at Elland Road as the club’s first-choice left wing-back.

Douglas slotted into Wolves’ 3-4-3 system last season, which relied heavily on their wing backs to provide width and interchanging with wide forwards to create a fluid Bielsa-esque attack.

The shape of Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United team
United fans should expect to see Douglas and Ayling, the club’s most talented wing-backs, push further forward and provide width and pace which Bielsa demands from his wide players.

They will interchange and link up with the wide forwards with fluidity being a key part of Bielsa’s style of play, so expect to see the likes of loan signing Jack Harrison, Gjanni Alioski and Tyler Roberts regularly swapping positions and dovetailing down the channels.

Last season Wolves heavily relied upon the use of their wing-backs Matt Doherty and Douglas in both attacking and defensive phases of play, and Leeds will adopt a similar approach under Bielsa.

The new Leeds head coach wants to play with a high defensive line, and will expect his wing-backs to drive down the channels and cut inside to strengthen the midfield.

The chances Barry Douglas created against Queens Park Rangers last season
Douglas enjoys getting forward and creating chances for his team-mates, and completed 74 accurate crosses in the Championship in 2017/18, more than any other Championship defender and was the fourth-highest tally in the entire division.

The former Dundee United player also delivered 54 corners which successfully found a teammate, more than any other Championship defender and the fifth-highest tally in the division.

This is an area Leeds severely underperformed in last season following an abundance of set-piece goals under Garry Monk in 2016/17.

All of Barry Douglas's 2017/18 statistics
Douglas’s excellent 80.3 per cent pass distribution rate for Wolves last season proved one of his many strengths, with only Adam Forshaw (85.4 per cent) and Pontus Jansson (83.2 per cent) completing a higher average for the Whites (+2 starts).

His distribution is exceptional, having created 86 chances in the Championship last season, more than any other Wolves player.

In fact, only Pablo Hernandez managed to better that record for Leeds with 102 chances created.

The left wing-back was heavily involved in Wolves’ title charge and collective gameplan, averaging 73 touches per game and 46 passes per outing.

Barry Douglas's touch map against Norwich City last season
Douglas is a set-piece specialist with a clinical left-foot. Something Leeds fans will already be aware of following his superb 25-yard free-kick goal during Wolves’ 4-1 demolition of the club last November.

It was one of two, direct free-kicks for Douglas at Wolves, and it would come as no surprise to see him take up the role of dead-ball specialist at Elland Road.

Bielsa and United have identified Douglas as the ideal candidate to strengthen Leeds’ left flank.

The Argentine typically prefers athletic, strong all-rounders who drive forward and make runs to support attacking phases, while also ensuring they are not caught in possession or out of position. Douglas fits that bill perfectly.

Bielsa was one of the pioneers of inverted wing-backs, bucking the trend of staying wide in possession and carrying the ball into central areas and helping midfield.

Although Douglas may not be expected to feature on the right side, he covered vast distances on the pitch last season, and will be expected to replicate his performances by supporting attacking phases and tracking back into position.

Leeds will have an extremely dynamic style of play this season, and Douglas will be a key part of that.

Bielsa will set up the Whites to attack relentlessly, overloading wide areas and acting as the main protagonists in matches.

Douglas will look to dominate the left channel and utilise space down the wing to stretch opponents.

The Scotland international pushes both high and wide as well as cutting inside, working triangles with teammates and favours drifting into pockets of space.

Defensive Contribution

Barry Douglas's defensive contributions in 2017/18
Douglas’s defensive contribution at Wolves is criminally underrated, and some fans have attributed his move to Elland Road stemming from this being a weak side to his game.

The Scotland full-back certainly isn’t the fastest player on the ball, and has struggled to match the pace of a handful of tricky Championship wingers, but his reading of the game and positioning is exceptional.

He averaged to win six total duels won per game, 2.5 aerial duels per game, 2.1 tackles won per game and 1.8 blocks per appearance.

Douglas won 83 tackles in the division last season, something only Kalvin Phillips (105) and Gjanni Alioski (101) could better for Leeds.

Despite being just 5ft 10in, the full-back won 98 aerial duels, Pontus Jansson was the only Leeds defender who could better that in 2017/18 (164).

The Scottish international's experience will be a key attribute, a calming influence in possession who is able to build possession through a series of short passes and movement.

Bielsa's wing-backs are expected to work the hardest in the system, closing down space down the channels and rejoining the central defensive trio to form a bank of five at the back out of possession.

Leeds fans are still licking their lips at the prospect of seeing Barry Douglas playing at Elland Road this season.

The club have pulled a huge rabbit out of the hat and surprised many by signing one of the best performers in the Championship last season.

If Douglas can replicate or better his contribution for Bielsa’s Leeds, the likes of Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe will be the one who will reap the benefits and tally up the goals.

Barry Douglas was exactly the right calibre of player required to enable the club to make a serious promotion push.

It means Leeds now boast one of the best full-back pairings in the division, and if Bielsa can get the club ticking and playing his famous brand of attacking and intensive football, Douglas has a very strong chance of securing back-to-back Championship promotions.

Synes Douglas gjorde sine saker bra.
