Reserves home in on title triumph
Leeds United
Date: 19 April 2009
By Phil Hay
Leeds United's reserves will bid to complete an impressive campaign and claim league winners' medals at the end of this month after an inexperienced line-up held their nerve during the penultimate game of the season.
United sent a youthful team to Rotherham United on Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours after the first team's narrow defeat at League One leaders Leicester City, and a 1-0 victory put Leeds within one victory of claiming the totesport.com League East Division crown.

The title seemed to be off the agenda after the club's second string began the term with three defeats from five matches, but a surge of flawless form supported by members of both Simon Grayson's senior squad and United's academy has carried them to the top of the table.

England youth international Liam Darville scored the only goal in their win at Rotherham, sealing a 10th straight success on the back of another excellent defensive display.

In fact the reserves have conceded only once during that passage of wins and lead title rivals Huddersfield Town by two points ahead of their last game of the season at home to the Millers on April 28.

Town kept their own championship bid alive by routing York City 3-0 on Wednesday, but Hartlepool United â€" the only other club with a chance of beating Leeds to first place â€" drew with Grimsby Town this week and are no longer a threat to Neil Thompson's side.

Grayson has made full use of United's reserve-grade fixtures since taking the helm at Elland Road and strong line-ups in recent games against York and Huddersfield allowed several players to improve their fitness ahead of the Easter schedule.

Winger Andy Robinson made a strong return to the first-team squad having scored in both reserve fixtures and Andrew Hughes and Frazer Richardson also added their weight to second-string matches after succumbing to injuries earlier in the term.

Thompson took a different approach at Rotherham on Tuesday, fielding a team without a single senior-grade player and including two 16-year-olds in his party, but the youngsters proved their worth by extending a winning run which began in December.

Scunthorpe United were the last team to beat Leeds' reserves, far back in October, and an 11th successive victory a week on Tuesday would ensure that the Division One East title resides at Elland Road this summer.

Leeds could ultimately see that prize confirmed six days earlier if Huddersfield fail to win their final game of the season against Grimsby Town this Wednesday.

Huddersfield vant 3-1 over Grimsby i går kveld.

Her er riktig tråd:

Følgende referat fra reservelagskampen står å lese på Lincoln City's offisielle hjemmeside:
(Kan tyde på at Leeds var mer overlegne enn resultatet tilsier...)

City's reserves fell to a 2-1 defeat against a strong Leeds United second string at Sincil Bank Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

A first half penalty from Rene Howe was not enough for Lincoln, as goals from Becchio and Somma swung the game in Leeds' favour.

Match report by Daniel Mooney:

City lined out with an imposing trialist, Congolese international Ndiwa Lord Kangana, at the heart of the defence. First team regular Rene Howe formed a classic 'big man, little man' attack with the pacey Andy Hutchinson while Nathan Adams was handed a right wing commission.

Paul Green continued his comeback from a hip injury with a place at right back.

The match began in even fashion with Rene Howe bursting clear of the defence after 3 minutes and dragging his shot wide. Two minutes later City's veteran goalkeeper Musselwhite had to punch a corner off the head of Paul Huntingdon, from which Becchio blasted over from long range.

After 10 minutes Nathan Adams hit a dipping 30 yard drive off the outside of his right foot which Martin did well to tip over. And after 20 minutes Lincoln threatened again when Howe dispossessed Danny Hone and shot across goal, just ahead of the onrushing Hutchinson.

With 26 minutes on the clock Leeds took the lead as Paul Musselwhite's fluffed free kick from the right back position landed at the feet of Luciano Becchio. It was unfortunate for the keeper that his uncharacteristic error should fall to that particular player, who skilfully lofted the ball into the unguarded goal.

And Musselwhite was again called into action after 33 minutes, gathering a free kick at the second attempt.

No sooner had he done so than Lincoln broke down the other end and won a penalty. Sam Clucas' run and clever pirouette was abruptly halted and Howe sent Martin the wrong way to equalise.

However, Leeds were enjoying the Lions' share of possession and re-established their lead 5 minutes before the break. Davide Somma producing a tidy finish from inside the area.

Goalscorer Howe was withdrawn at the break, as Kieran Heap entered the fray on the right wing and young stars Hutchinson and Adams reunited in attack.

But it was Leeds who retained the ascendency. After 55 minutes Somma embarked on a run round the back of Lincoln's defence and hit a powerful cross shot which flashed across goal. Then Becchio dashed after a through ball but conceded a foul when he hauled back Danny Hone, who was alert to the danger.

As the game progressed, the experienced Becchio and Somma continued to trouble Lincoln's defenders. After 63 minutes Somma cleverly rolled Lord Ndiwa, then tested Musselwhite with a low drive from the edge of the box. And a couple of minutes later Lincoln's goal continued its charmed life as Somma beat Lord Ndiwa to the ball, rounded Musselwhite, but saw his shot somehow deflected onto the post. The prowling Josh Falkingham was unable to divert the rebound in.

With eight minutes left Somma hit a shot over the bar from the inside left position.

As the match neared its completion, the Imps struggled to impose themselves in the final third of the pitch. Adams and Hutchinson recieved little change out of Leeds' backline, with Rui Marques particularly impressive.

In truth Leeds might have added to their lead during the second half but for some last gasp defending.

Imps: Paul Musselwhite, Paul Green, Joe Heath, Sam Clucas, Kangana Lord Ndiwa, Danny Hone, Nathan Adams, Lee Bennett, Andrew Hutchinson, Rene Howe, Luca Coleman-Carr. Subs: Graham Hutchinson, Jack Davies, Arran Brookbanks, Kieran Heap, Jack Thomas.

Leeds: Alan Martin, Liam Darville, Alan Sheehan, Jason Crowe, Rui Marques, Paul Huntington, Will Hatfield, Josh Falkingham, Luciano Becchio, Davide Somma, Andrew Robinson. Subs: Mike Whitewell, Ryan Jones, Sam Jones, Adam Watson, Lewis Turner.
