En frisk Byram ger oss en dimension som vi annars saknar, se förra säsongen,  var även fint att få se taylor, Cook och dawson i andra halvlek hur de tog för sig och vilken härlig teknik de har, självklart inte på samma nivå men när man såg cook dawson på innermittfältet tänkte jag på bremner giles

United’s Under-21 side continued their good pre-season form on Tuesday afternoon when they beat Middlesbrough Under-21s 3-2. Chris Dawson opened up the scoring with a long range strike early in the first half but Middlesbrough struck back twice to take the advantage. With only five minutes of the game remaining United were still a goal behind but two fantastic late strikes from Kalvin Philips secured a dramatic comeback to seal victory. The side included a number of first team players and saw the first involvement of Zac Thompson since the defender was forced off at Guiseley due to injury. “It was a good contest,” said the Academy manager. “And at 2-1 down with five minutes to go it look like a defeat would be the outcome of a game. United’s Under-18s and Under-21s were in action on Friday and Saturday when they faced off against Leicester City’s Academy sides.

The Under-18s were first up on Friday to face The Foxes and found themselves two goals down at half time.

But a fantastic second half comeback from United saw the youngsters win 4-3 in what was another thriller at Thorp Arch.

The scorers for United were Tom Lyman who scored twice, Tyler Bell and Piteu Crouz.

Academy manager and head of coaching Neil Redfearn said: “It was another thrilling game on Friday. The lads were 2-0 down at half time but they rallied themselves and stormed back in the second half.

“There were good displays from all our players but Liam Bennett was head and shoulders above the rest.”

On Saturday the Under-21s were in action and an outstanding display saw a 4-0 victory and United’s training ground.

United’s goalscorers were Zac Thompson, Charlie Taylor, Luke Booker and Eoghan Stokes.

A delighted Neil Redfearn said: “It was an outstanding performance against a side that finished fourth in the Under-21 Premier League last season.

“We controlled the game for long periods with a measured passing game, even though Leicester set their stall out to try to stop us getting out from the back. Dan Atkinson’s distribution in goal was first class and set off countless attacking moves.

“In midfield Alex Purver, Kalvin Philips, Zac Thompson and Chris Dawson ran the show with Frank Mulhern a real Presence up front.

“At the back Charlie Taylor used all his experience to marshal the back-four to good effect and Jake Skelton was very combative alongside him. The only blot was an injury to Affi Coker who twisted his knee badly in the turf.”

U21s DRAW WITH CARDIFF

2-2 draw between United and Cardiff…

Cardiff City’s Under-21s were the visitors to Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon for United’s Under-21s first league game of the season.

The development sides drew 2-2 in what Academy manager and head of coaching Neil Redfearn called an impressive display by his side.

It was the Welsh side that opened the scoring at Thorp Arch through a fortunate goal but United midfielder Kalvin Philips levelled the tie.

Then, United took the lead when Ross Killock hit the back of the net, but the visitors earned the draw from the penalty spot.

With the scores level Alex Mowatt hit the post with a 20-yard strike but a point each was the final outcome.

“At 2-2 we hit the post with an Alex Mowatt 20-yarder and we also missed some good chances through Luke Parkin, Frank Mulhern and Munya M'banje,” said Redfearn.

“Overall it was a pleasing display in a game that we dominated for large spells with good passing movement in a midfield area. In the middle of the park we played the diamond shape of Purver, Thompson, Philips and Mowatt which looked impressive.”

Leeds United starlet Munyaradzi Mbanje has been was fine pre-season form for both the Championship club’s Under-18 and Under-21 teams, earning some positive coverage on the club’s official website.

Mbanje, who turns 18 next week and is one of Zimbabwe’s brightest prospects, has been with the Leeds academy for the last two years.

Although he remains an unknown quantity back home, reports on some of his pre-season performances generally paint the picture of a skilful forward who needs no second invitation to take a crack on goal.


In one of his matches for the Under-18s the match report noted that “...the game also saw exciting young Zimbabwean Munyaradzi Mbanje score a hat-trick.”

But he was also featuring for the Under-21s, where he again proved a handful for opposing defences.

In one of the games, a match report noted that “Zimbabwean talent Munyaradzi Mbanje then curved out two opportunities, as he forced Crook into a low save before crashing another onto the bar. “... Mbanje was often in the thick of United’s attacking play, and after turning out of a tight space down the left-hand side, he forced Crook to tip over a brilliant shot destined for the top corner.”

Mbanje also scored the winner for what was reported as the Leeds United XI against Corby Town. All the matches where played in July.

The gifted forward is illegible to play for the Zimbabwe Under-23s in the forthcoming All-Africa Games and Olympic qualifiers.
