The crowd today of 7,818 was higher than 14 League One club’s average turnouts this season. Just a reminder that this was an academy game. you run out of superlatives to describe this support... [@lufc]  #lufc #mot

Carlos Corberan hails "incredible experience" as Leeds United seal PDL glory

Leeds United celebrate PDL title at Elland Road.
Carlos Corberan hailed an "incredible experience" for his Leeds United Under-23s side as they sealed the Professional Development League national title.

United were crowned PDL champions on Monday afternoon in front of a near 8,000 strong crowd at Elland Road following a penalty shoot-out victory over Birmingham City.

The two sides failed to be separated after extra-time with the Whites and Blues cancelling each other out for much of the contest.

Leeds, though, claimed the title as Jack Clarke stepped up to fire United to a 4-2 victory from the spot which sparked wild celebrations.

United head coach Corberan, who had already seen his side claim the northern title last month, praised his players after an "incredible experience" that he believes will only aid their development.

"I think today was a very positive day for our players," Corberan reflected.

"They have lived an incredible experience. We came here to play the final full of people, it's something unbelievable. It makes you feel proud of our club.

"These types of experience will only help our players grow and improve in their careers. The fact that we played extra-time and penalties can help us to continue to grow.

"We are always thinking about how these experiences can help our players. Today was a very positive day for them."

Asked about the close link to the first-team in this season's development success, he said: "Marcelo is very focused on how every player is developing.

"We are trying to improve the strengths and weaknesses of every player. I think the connection is one of the keys, because they are playing games with the senior players.

"This teaches you a lot about the mentality that you need to be a professional football player. Every time you have contact with them you know what you need to do better."

United's support piled in their thousands to take in the fixture in in what was Corberan's reward after a gruelling 29-game campaign.

The Spaniard, though, couldn't hold back his admiration for those in attendance.

"It's unbelievable how big this club is," he said.

"They have shown they have the Leeds feeling inside themselves. They are going to help the Under-23s. It is something unbelievable and makes us feel very proud.

"We also feel a higher responsibility because when they come here we want to give them happiness."

Well... what else can you say? An incredible season for the Under-23s. Carlos Corberan and his staff have worked wonders in just two years since his arrival. From throwing a side together to PDL national champions - the future is bright. #lufc

Professional Development League format explained as Leeds United bid for glory in play-off final v Birmingham City

 Leeds United Under-23s.
Leeds United Under-23s.
Leeds United's Under-23s take on Birmingham City in the Professional Development League national play-off final on Monday lunchtime - but how does the league system work?

The Whites have earned a spot in the PDL play-off final with Carlos Corberan's side aiming to become national champions.

United welcome the Blues to LS11 on Monday lunchtime (May 6) with kick-off set for 12:30pm - entry is free for supporters at Elland Road via the West Stand.

Here's everything you need to know about the PDL format:

How does the Under-23s league system work?

In 2012 a new Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) system was introduced for Premier League and Football League academies in England.

Each academy was given a category status from 1-4 based on the following criteria:

"Up to 10 different factors will be considered in the grading, including productivity rates; training facilities; and coaching, education and welfare provisions."

The EPPP was introduced in a bid to produce more homegrown players.

Following its arrival a new league system was put in place which is now formatted as Premier League 2 (PL2) and the Professional Development League (PDL).

Category one clubs were entered into the PL2 and split into two divisions with promotion and relegation while category two academies were split into two north and south divisions.

The Central League - a reserve league - also remained in place for several Football League teams with lower rated academies (three and four).

Why are Leeds in the Professional Development League?

Leeds were handed Category two status in the EPPP system and therefore compete in the Professional Development League.

Which teams compete in the Professional Development League?

Northern section - Barnsley, Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday.

Southern section - Bristol City, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Colchester United, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Watford.

How does the Professional Development League work?

The Professional Development League is split into two divisions of 10 teams of category two rated academies - north and south.

Each team plays the opponents in their own division home and away.

They then also play teams from the opposing section once - which could be either home or away - to make up a 28-game season.

A league winners trophy is handed out to the victors of each section before an end of season play-off is held to determine the overall winners.

Play-off format:

Semi-finals:

A - PDL North winners v PDL South runners-up

B - PDL South winners v PDL North runners-up

National final:

Winner A v Winner B

This year North winners Leeds faced South runners-up Coventry City in the semi-finals of the play-offs while North runners-up Birmingham City travelled to South winners Ipswich Town.

United defeated the Sky Blues in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 victory in extra-time while Birmingham made easy work of Town at Portman Road winning 3-0 to set-up a clash for the title between the Whites and the Blues.

Leeds earned the right to host the national play-off final after being drawn out ahead of the semi-final fixtures - which will now take place at Elland Road on Monday (May 6) at 12:30pm.

Will the winners of the Professional Development League national final be promoted?

Simply put, no. It will just be the Professional Development League trophy and bragging rights on the line at Elland Road.

For any team to move between the PL2 or PDL an academies status would have to be regraded under the EPPP criteria.

Carlos Corberan lifts the lid on how Marcelo Bielsa revolutionised Leeds United's under-23 champions - Leeds Live

Ambition and competitive spirit was growing in the hearts of Leeds United’s under-23 team, but it was the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa which really lit the touch paper for success.

Carlos Corberan , the coach on the touchline for every second of the development’s side campaign, pointed to the link, instigated by Bielsa , between the first team and under-23s .

While there was the cornerstone for success last season, under Corberan’s tutelage, the Spaniard said it was Bielsa’s influence which really set ambitions for the Premier League Professional Development League in motion.

On Monday, after finishing first in Group North, the Whites clinched the overall national title by beating Birmingham City 4-2 on penalties after a two-hour stalemate.

Of the 14 players used in the PDL final, 12 have been included in Bielsa’s first-team squads, eight have seen pitch time and six of those included senior debuts.

“The team from the last year have been working more and we start to grow as a real competitive squad,” said Corberan.

“It was something very positive, but, at the same time, Marcelo arrived here and the connection with the first team, for the 23s, have a connection.

“Every day they are involved with his demands. Every day they are training with high intensity.

“At the end you have to start to think to be ambitious and if the first team is competing for a high level of challenges you have to do the same as under-23s.

“The formation of our players is the same: try to win every time. We try to develop the winning mentality of our players.

“They have shown they have developed this part. That is one of the keys in football.”

The match was not the most entertaining spectacle for the 7,818 who poured into Elland Road for free to watch the game.

No goals from two hours of football led to penalties, which were taken in front of a deserted South Stand.

While Mateusz Bogusz hit the post with United’s first, he was followed by scores from Pascal Struijk, Ryan Edmondson, Kun Temenuzhkov and Jack Clarke.

Asked how the takers were decided, Corberan said: “In these moments the most important thing is the confidence of the players, who wants to live the moment and who is able to enjoy one moment that for some players is high pressure.

“For others it is an opportunity or challenge to show they are ready to do it.

Carlos Corberan on why Leeds United aren't going down the loan route with their top young talent - Leeds Live

Leeds United's under-23 side capped a memorable season in style on Monday, beating Birmingham City on penalties to secure the PDL-National title.

The dramatic shoot-out victory in front of almost 8,000 fans at Elland Road came after Carlos Corberan's side win the PDL North title in March and also progressed to the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup.

In additional to the fine form that the young Whites displayed, a host of players have made the step up to Marcelo Bielsa's first-team.

Of the 14 players who featured in the final against Birmingham, 12 have featured in at least one of Bielsa's squads and eight have played, which includes six senior professional debuts.

Corberan's under-23s side have enjoyed an excellent campaign(Image: Leeds United)
Hopes are understandably high for this current crop and Corberan believes that Leeds' decision to nurture their best young talent at the club, rather than sending players out on loan to gain first-team experience in the lower leagues is playing dividends.

"No doubts," the Spaniard told LeedsLive following the Elland Road victory.

"This is our philosophy because sometimes when people put the players out on loan and they develop in other conditions. It's important for our club to know what the conditions are to control the players in small details like their weight, the prevention work, the tactical work, the technical work, the physical work and I think the conditions that we have at Leeds United nowadays, are high-level conditions.

Carlos Corberan lifts the lid on how Marcelo Bielsa revolutionised Leeds United's under-23 champions

"Of course when you are playing men's football, it's another type of football, but they have to experience what we do in the week. Improving them makes them more ready to play one style of game, and I think that helps them arrive at the first team more.

"The players who have potential and the mentality to arrive ,if they are here in the under-23s, then they are going to arrive if they focus and show the quality is there, because they play alike to the first team."

While Monday's final win marks the end of the under-23s campaign, a number of Corberan's charges such as Jack Clarke, Jamie Shackleton and Robbie Gotts will be hoping to contribute in the senior team's play-off push.

Leeds United Under-23s season review - ratings, stats and how the PDL title was won

Leeds United’s Under-23s capped off a fine season on Monday by securing the Professional Development League national title at Elland Road. Here's our season review:
How the Professional Development League title was won

P28 W17 D6 L5

United entered this season having finished in the safety of mid-table in the PDL North at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, Carlos Corberan's first season at the club.

The Spaniard, though, saw a turnaround in results from January onwards as the club won 10 of their last 15 league games.

Buoyed by the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa in June, United's development side set their sights high and attempted to build on the platform they set themselves heading into pre-season.

A consistent style was deployed across all academy levels by the Argentinian and a clear identity was put in place.

Leeds began the season by winning four out of their first six games in the PDL before falling to a first defeat at Bolton Wanderers in mid-September.

A mixture of youth and experience was utilised as Bielsa took the chance to use the Under-23s to give out-of-favour first-team players much-needed match minutes.
An inconsistent run to the New Year saw five victories, three defeats and one draw but ensured the Whites opened 2019 at the top of the pile.

Leeds then took hold of the title race in style, suffering just one league defeat in the whole of the second half of the campaign.

Corberan's charges sealed the PDL North title in late March having been powered by front man Ryan Edmondson, who ended the regular season with 18 goals in all competitions.

The end-of-season play-offs pitted United against PDL South runners-up Coventry City.

A dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory saw Leeds earn a shot at the national title with Birmingham City the visitors to Elland Road.

A near-8,000 crowd turned up for the final in LS11 as the two sides played out a 0-0 stalemate before another pulsating finish saw Leeds claim the PDL bragging rights with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win.

Premier League Cup review

P9 W6 L3

United's Premier League Cup campaign got off to the worst of starts.

After being drawn in Group G alongside Newcastle United, Southampton and Notts County, the Whites fell to two defeats in their opening three fixtures, leaving themselves a mountain to climb.

They fought back to end with three straight victories and qualify as group winners in what was tough opposition with category one academy talent on display.

A battling 2-2 draw with Fulham in the last 16 saw United come out on top in a penalty shoot-out after being reduced to 10-men early in the second half.

Another impressive performance in the quarter-finals saw the Whites make light work of PDL rivals Burnley with a 3-1 victory.

The win set-up another clash with Newcastle but the semi-final showdown proved to be a step too far for Corberan's youngsters as they fell to a resounding 3-0 defeat after what had been an impressive campaign.

Ratings (not first team players or loanees)

Will Huffer (goalkeeper) -
Tall, commanding and loud. You'll hear him before you see him. Has looked assured when called upon but is probably ready for more senior football after a loan spell to Barnet and his Whites debut in late 2018.

Harrison Male (goalkeeper) -
For what he gives up in height he has in agility. Pulled off a number of great saves, one in particular against Burnley in the Premier League Cup when he tipped a long-range shot onto the bar at full stretch. An Under-18 who has stepped up and done well when required.

Kamil Miazek (goalkeeper) -
A little unlucky to be pushed behind Jamal Blackman in the early part of the season. Possesses a good reading of the game and is willing to play with the ball at his feet. His penalty heroics in the PDL national final will live long in the memory for him. A good season all round.

Leif Davis (left-back) -
The most assured left-back in the 23s squad. Has real pace and directness to his play. Just as good going forward as he is back towards goal. Can also play centre-back if required. Looks close to being ready.

Hugo Diaz (centre-back/midfield) -
One of the older members of the squad at 22. A ball playing centre-back who can also slot into the heart of midfield. Loves a yellow card and a big crunching tackle. Has an eye for a through ball.

Aapo Halme (centre-back) -
The towering defender stands at 6ft 5in. Dominates aerially and is a calm figure in the middle of defence. Enjoys a crossfield ball. Injuries hampered the early part of his campaign but has been a key figure for the side

Bryce Hosannah (right-back) -
Another who has suffered with injuries since joining the club. Came back into the fold in the latter half of the campaign and started to get back to his best. Pacey and direct.

Clarke Oduor (left-back/winger) -
One that sneaks under the radar. A good winger and an even better left-back. Has a great left-footed delivery which found Ryan Edmondson's head on many occasions. Glides past players at will.

Pascal Struijk (centre-back) -
If Salim Lamrani was handing out his name it couldn't be anything other than ‘The Beast’ for Pascal. A physical defender who dominated everything in the air but also has ball-playing ability. Has pitched in with a few goals too.

Jamie Shackleton (right-back/midfield) -
The one that has left everyone yearning for more. Transformed into a right-back from his natural spot in midfield under Marcelo Bielsa's guidance. His pace and workrate has seen calls for him to be more involved at senior level. Doesn't look far away at all.

Robbie Gotts (right-back/midfield) -
The most improved across the season. Has been moved from right-back into attacking midfield. Goals, passing, pace and a seriously bright future. One to watch.

Mateusz Bogusz (midfield) -
Looks like a real talent. Made a big impact after his arrival in January and has already been included in Bielsa's matchday squad. Craft and an eye for goal were promised and he's delivered so far.

Jack Clarke (winger) -
Just about makes it onto this list. A fine season at both levels but has made a step back into the Under-23s following his worrying collapse at Middlesbrough in February. Could still have a large part to play in the play-offs.

Bobby Kamwa (winger) -
A cameo season in the Under-23s. Has real pace but is still very raw. The hype around him is big and it has been seen in patches this season. Suffered with a few injuries which has limited his minutes.

Alfie McCalmont (midfield) -
Wins the ball and keeps it simple. The Kalvin Phillips role was built for him and at just 19 he has dominated a lot of games in midfield this season. Has an eye for a goal from outside the box. One at Tadcaster in pre-season sticks out. Already representing Northern Ireland at Under-19 level too.

Callum Nicell (midfield) -
Another one who has stepped up this season. Looks assured in midfield and has donned the captain's armband on occasion. Can pick a pass.

Jordan Stevens (winger) -
Pacey and direct. Has really come on this season. Can play on either wing and is at his best when running at the defence. Forged a good partnership with both wing-backs and tracks his man well.

Sam Dalby (striker) -
Had a bright start to the season but fell out of favour. Strong in the air but not a winger where he spent a lot of time. Moved out in the second half of the campaign to Morecambe on loan.

Ryan Edmondson (striker) -
What a season. At 17 he has bullied defenders years beyond him. Nineteen goals in all competitions is a brilliant return and you'd back him to find the back of the net more often than not.

Kun Temenuzhkov (striker) -
After helping the Under-18s to the title last season has made the step up. Can play either as a striker or a number 10. Has scored some important goals this season and none moreso than his wonder strike in the play-off semi-final against Coventry. Always looks busy.

Rafa Mújica: Views From One Of he Biggest Barcelona Academy Accounts On Twitter!

30 Jun 2019
Leeds United are set to complete the signing of Barcelona youngster Rafa Mújica on a free transfer who will likely join up with our under 23’s squad. The Spanish striker who can also play on the wing started his career at Las Palmas before joining Barcelona’s youth system in May 2015. Since then he has been a regular for Barcelona B playing in the Segunda Divison B in Spain and has also played for Spain at under 19’s level. He was part of Barcelona’s first team squad for their pre-season in 2016/17 and scored against Leicester City in a 4-2 victory for Barcelona, but didn’t make his official first team debut during his time in Spain.

He did make the bench for their game against Levante UD in the the Copa del Rey, but didn’t get onto the pitch. Injuries in 2017 have halted his career after being sidelined for nine months but at the age of 20 he has only just started his career and move away could be just what he needs to further his career. Last season he played 33 games, scoring 7 goals and picking up 1 assist in Segunda Divison B for Barcelona B. I spoke to @Youngcules who is well known for all the latest information on Barcelona famous La Masia academy to gain an insight into the sort of player Leeds United are signing.

What are his strengths?
I’d definitely say his work rate, he works his ass off in every game, be it on or off the ball. He must be annoying to play against, because he’s constantly running, especially given his physique, he’s pretty well-built. There are also some games where he produces extraordinary finishes. At U19s he would for example once in a while do fantastic lobs above the keeper from far outside.

Example of Rafa pressing high and nearly winning the ball.

What are his weaknesses?
For a striker he simply needs to score more goals. He scored 7 last season, and given that he didn’t start every time, that might not be too bad, but given his age and Barca B and Segunda B (third tier) experience, I expected more of him. Three of the seven goals were also scored in one game, so he was pretty ineffective in front of goal, when Barça B needed a striker to score them into playoff spots, which didn’t happen due to many 1 goal losses or draws.

Highlights the need to improve his finishing stats via @rramesss

We signed Kun Temenuzhkov from Barcelona, how does he compare to him?
Kun was more of a target player as I remember him, he was very active in the box where he’d normally tap it in when given the chance. Mujica seeks chances more with runs off the ball and works much, much harder, if I remember Kun’s work rate correctly.

Was you aware go any interest from any other clubs, if so why do you think he joined Leeds United?

I didn’t hear anything, but I’m sure their must’ve been interest. Rafa is a former Spain youth international and has done decently on higher level (scored in a preseason friendly against Leicester in 2016), so him leaving on free transfer should’ve given him several offers, but I think Leeds’ interest might’ve caught more attention from the start because of Bielsa’s pull and the fact that it’s a great challenge in a new league and country. There are also other Spanish-speaking in the club, right? So should be a good destination for him.

Like all fans, when I see we’re signing a player from Barcelona I get excited, should I be?
I think you should, he has potential to help you, I’d say. I think Bielsa will like him, especially for his work rate.

Well timed run and good, early finish.

At the age of 20, was it time for him to leave Barcelona and are you sad to see him go?
Yes, it was definitely time for him to leave. He was not one of those talents who could’ve or should’ve been given a first team change and left because they didn’t, there are two more talented strikers below his age coming through at U19s and Barça B, so it made complete sense not to renew his contract. The window of him potentially making it at the club was more or less closed last year. But while saying so I’m really happy to see him joining Leeds because he’s honestly such a good kid. One of the most beloved in the entire squad, so he’ll be missed for sure at the club.

Finally, do you have any interesting stories about him, or a favourite moment from for Barcelona?
There must be some that I don’t know of, because Mujica (or Muji as he’s called by his teammates) was extremely liked by his teammates. But I do have one friend who does post-match interviews after B games, and she absolutely adores him, because he’s a sweet guy who always takes time to answer questions and in the right manner. I think he’ll quickly become a fan favourite, especially if he starts scoring goals quickly. He’s a very nice guy, but don’t get me wrong, on the pitch he’s an absolute warrior. Loads of potential in him.

A big thanks to Navid for his time and answers, go check out him out on twitter at @Youngcules. At the age of 20 I think we’re getting a player that has a lot of good attributes that fit Leeds United’s ethos. Yes, he needs to improve in certain areas as mentioned above but it sounds very much like he’s willing to put the time and effort in to make sure he reaches his maximum potential.

Davis, Stevens og Struijk er vel da flyttet over i A stallen ?
For the sake of Leeds United he would break himself in two

Corberan/Bielsa sparer ikke på kruttet! Costa spiller fra start! Veldig sterkt lag vi stiller med:

Meslier - Gotts, Hosannah, Struijk, Alioski - McCalmont - Clarke, Shackleton, Stevens, Costa - Temenuzhkov

Subs: Miazek, Casey, Berardi, Bogusz, Nketiah
