McAllister rules out Scotland job

Former Scotland midfielder Gary McAllister has ruled himself out of the running for the national manager's job.
The former Coventry boss was speaking only hours after ex-Liverpool boss Graeme Souness hinted that he would like to be considered.
Scottish FA chief Gordon Smith has said that the post is unlikely to be filled until early next year.
But McAllister stated: "If I'm going back into football, I'd be looking to go into the day-to-day stuff."
The SFA need to find a replacement for Alex McLeish, who resigned from his post to join Birmingham.
McAllister, who it is understood came a close second to McLeish last year, had been expected to be one of the front-runners for the vacancy.
"I was very honoured and humbled to be asked along to an interview when Walter went back to Rangers," he said.
McAllister, who won 57 caps for Scotland, cited his personal circumstances had changed since dealing with the death of his wife.
"The thought of international football appealed to me then," he said.
"It suited my situation, the troubles I've had in my family recently, but now things have moved on and times have made things change."

Meanwhile, former Scottish international Graeme Souness expressed a desire to manage at international level.
The former Newcastle boss told the club website: "I would be interested in taking a national team position."
Recently sacked Derby manager Billy Davies said he would be "flattered" if he was approached about the vacancy by the Scottish Football Association.

With Roy Aitken and Andy Watson (** begge er ex-Leeds, som h.h.v. trener/ass.manager og spiller) also leaving the Scotland set-up to join McLeish, an entirely new coaching team is required. John Collins, Mark McGhee and Craig Levein are among those already linked with the top job, along with Souness and Davies.
SFA chief executive Smith said: "There have been loads of names put about but we'll be taking our time over it.
"There's no time-frame on it at all either."
Smith also said he would prefer McLeish to be succeeded by a Scotsman but did not rule out looking overseas.
"Hopefully, it will be a Scottish person because I think that is important," added Smith.
"But we won't ignore an outstanding candidate just because he is foreign. That would not be fair."
When the position is eventually filled, McLeish believes the new man will have a bright future at international level.
Speaking on his first day at St Andrews, McLeish said: "There are several good young managers who can take Scotland on.
"I inherited a good squad from squad from Walter Smith and we added one or two of our own.
"The national team can definitely go forward and they look a very healthy bunch indeed."

Watson happy to join McLeish for Birmingham "challenge"

New Birmingham City coach Andy Watson says Alex McLeish and his staff are excited by the challenge ahead at St Andrews.
Watson told the Daily Record: "You always like to leave something with a good feeling as it signifies you have done well. I feel that has been the case everywhere we have been up to now and hopefully it will be with Scotland.
"We lost against Italy but everybody realised we gave the best we could. We had a chance against the world champions but just fell short.
"I think the fans realise that Alex also gave everything and didn't shortchange them in any shape or form.
"But we are all looking forward to the challenge at Birmingham. This is a great opportunity for him although he looked long and hard at it before accepting. He had to weigh up nine months of inactivity before starting the World Cup qualifiers or whether to take up the chance to manage in the Premiership."

SVEN STEERS HIS SIDE TO VICTORY
Sven-Goran Eriksson maintained that winning feeling at Eastlands - although his duties had changed for the day - as a Rest of the World Legends XI beat an England Legends XI 3-2 on Sunday.
The Manchester City manager has seen his team win all eight home Barclays Premier League matches this season.
And in charge of the Rest of the World side he again came up trumps when they faced an England XI led by Terry Venables.
The aim of the game, organised by the Professional Footballers' Association in their centenary year, was to raise £1million for a new unit at a children's hospital in Manchester.
Leeds manager Dennis Wise opened the scoring for England in the eighth minute and Steve Stone almost added a second 10 minutes later but Neville Southall made a good parry.
The Rest of the World, however, controlled the second half and scored twice in the space of two minutes. Lorenzo Amoruso equalised in the 50th minute and then Ian Rush gave them the lead.
Ally McCoist added a third in the 72nd minute before Jamie Redknapp pulled a goal back for England six minutes later.

And one of his most important decisions could prove to be his choice of former Spurs hero Gus Poyet as his assistant.
(....) Leeds' director of football, Gwyn Williams, is also a fan. He said: 'Gus is a fantastic coach and I'm sure he'll become a top manager. He has a great ability to make everyone feel part of the team. He's a very strong character.'

Aston Villa will pay £10m to make goalkeeper Scott Carson's loan move from Liverpool permanent. (Daily Star)
--

Villa wait on Carson deal
ASTON VILLA boss Martin O’Neill insists there is no deal with Liverpool to turn Scott Carson’s loan into a permanent move.
Carson, who failed to nail down a first-team spot at Anfield, has impressed at Villa Park this season despite his woes for England.
But O'Neill said: “Is the Scott Carson deal going through?
"He is here for the season and we have heard nothing from Liverpool at all.
“Of course, that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t start talking about something before the end of the season and I’m aware Rafael Benitez mentioned something about it a week or so ago.
“But Liverpool haven’t spoken to us - and haven’t spoken since Scott was capped for England.
“I will look at the situation and Liverpool will be very much in the driving seat because they can dictate what the player is going to cost.
“But there is no agreement on a fee. It is as simple as that.”
Meanwhile, Villa have signed promising Austrian keeper Thomas Dau, 16, on a three-year deal.

Oster - injury blow

OSTER TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE

Reading have revealed midfielder John Oster is to undergo surgery on his ankle injury.
Oster has been troubled by the problem ever since facing Everton back in August and, despite a couple couple of comebacks since, it has failed to clear up.
As a result, he will go under the surgeon's knife, most likely next Monday, two days after his 29th birthday. But it is unclear how long he will be out for.
Physio Jon Fearn told the Royals' official website: "We saw a specialist on Tuesday to discuss the problem.
"He agreed that we've done as much as we can in terms of conservative treatment.
"Now we'll look at surgery next Monday.

Hyll Healy!
Nord-Irland-sjef Nigel Worthington krever at superspissens rekordform settes pris på.
Fulhams David Healy (28) satte ny europeisk scoringsrekord i helgen.
Healy goal haul earns UEFA award

David Healy's Northern Ireland heroics received the ultimate seal of approval yesterday when Michel Platini gave the go-ahead for his latest scoring landmark to receive official recognition.
The Fulham striker's 13-goal haul in Northern Ireland's narrow failure to reach the Euro 2008 finals took him past Croatia's Davor Suker as the highest scorer in a qualifying campaign.
It led to calls for a one-off award â€" probably a golden boot â€" and UEFA president Platini readily sanctioned the idea after a meeting with IFA president Raymond Kennedy.
"He was 100 per cent in favour," said Kennedy. "He thought it was a fantastic achievement by such a small nation and felt David thoroughly deserved a lasting reminder of what was an incredible feat. When you think David scored as many goals in one qualifying tournament as our previous record holder, Colin Clarke, managed in his entire international career, it gives you an indication of the scale of his achievement."

Joe Jordan Wants To Be Scotland Manager

JOE JORDAN has thrown his hat in the ring to be the next Scotland boss.
The Portsmouth coach has managerial experience after stints at Hearts, Stoke and Bristol City and enjoyed a glittering playing career with Manchester United, AC Milan and Leeds United.
Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish and Craig Levein are just a few to have been linked with the vacancy created by Alex McLeish's switch south to Birmingham City.
But Jordan has followed former Derby boss Billy Davies in declaring his interest in the post.
Jordan, who won 52 caps and is the only Scot to score in three World Cup finals series, said: "I'm no different from any other Scot. I would love to be associated with that job.
"To be involved as a coach or manager would be very nice but Portsmouth is a long way away from Scotland so I don't know what the SFA think.
"I've a important job to do at Portsmouth and I've a good rapport with the people here but it's a big compliment to be associated with that position."
However, Dalgish admits he'd be stunned if the SFA approached him.
Chief executive Gordon Smith has began pruning the current multitude of wannabes for the manager's job down to a shortlist.
But despite the change of personnel from the top table, Dalglish doesn't expect that to signal an approach.
The Scotland, Celtic and Liverpool great wasn't even contacted before they boobed in appointing Berti Vogts. (.....)
