View GalleryLEEDS United chairman Ken Bates plans to transform the club's Elland Road ground with an ambitious scheme that includes two hotels, a shopping centre and a health club.

The hotels, a budget proposition and a four-star offering, would be built in an L shape on the site currently occupied by a souvenir shop.

The development would also include food outlets and a Leeds United museum.

Details of the plan were announced by Mr Bates in the match programme for United's derby game against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

He said the hotels would strengthen the club's conference and banqueting (C&B) business, and added: "I believe that the income from an enlarged C&B market would enable us to buy a quality player every year!"

So far no start date for the development has been announced.

Mr Bates says his plans complement those of Leeds City Council, which owns much of the land surrounding the ground.

In September, the council floated the idea of building a new railway station as part of wider plans for a leisure development.

The council's own plans for the area include proposals for an entertainment arena, casino, hotel, health club, police headquarters, cafes, bars and parking for about 2,700 cars.

The east coast railway line borders the site and the idea of building a station at Elland Road has been discussed several times over the last 20 years.

Council leader Andrew Carter said when the latest plan was unveiled: "All members would like to see a halt but it would be dependent on the developments that take place and the value of those developments.

"In the past the line has not had sufficient capacity and there has been no money to build the facility. However, we have to fight for it because it would benefit the city in general."

The Elland Road ground was sold to Manchester businessman Jacob Adler by a previous United board in late 2004, with Leeds taking a 25-year lease on the site. It was sold on to British Virgin Islands-based Teak Commercial Limited in 2005.

Mr Bates has said he intends to buy back Elland Road "in the fullness of time".

Council leader Andrew Carter confirmed talks with the Leeds chairman are ongoing after Bates announced details of a Chelsea Village-style development at Elland Road in Saturday's match programme.
Carter told PA Sport: "Our over-riding priority as the major landowner around Elland Road is to get the best deal possible for the council-tax payers of the city of Leeds.
"We expect that whatever development which may or may not take place at Elland Road - and they must first of all go through the planning process - would be folly if it did not compliment the council's plans.
"Our officers have been talking to Mr Bates' representatives for some time and will continue to do so."
The council's plans include options for a concert arena, casino and 2,700 car-parking spaces, while Bates wants to build two hotels, a club megastore, a covered shopping arcade containing shops and fast-food outlets, a health club, tourist centre and a Leeds United museum.

Eg sa det same om området og potensialet rundt puben til Pete. Men no har jommen sentrum byrje å spre seg dit. Så ja, det er ikkje heilt utenkeleg at Elland Road kan skape eit nytt sentrum for næringsverksemd.

Et Premier Inn og et Hilton da. Uansett, jeg kommer nok til å innlosjere meg i sentrum.
Gidder ikke å menge meg med f.eks Portsmouth-spillere i resepsjonen eller baren ( Jepp, det er en grunn til det står Portsmouth og ikke Bournemouth ).

Veldig kjekt å lese at Bates også planlegg eit nytt klubb-museum. Det eksisterande har mange minner for livet, men heng i relativt dystre korridorar og fortenar ein betre plass. Dette viser at Bates (i tillegg til økonomien) også tenkjer på klubbhistorikken.

Var det ikke nettopp hoteller (tomme sådan) som satte Chelsea i stor, pressende gjeld? Eller i det minste var en stor del av det?

Utbyggingen av Elland Road og disse hotellene er vel avhengig at vi har fotball som selger!!! Opp må vi, og det før det blir aktuelt med hotallbygging.

Det er jo litt av greia da, at hotellene skal være med å finansiere selve klubben i fremtiden. Det er ikke nødvendigvis noe motsetningsforhold mellom å både øke inntektene gjennom ikke-fotball-investeringer og det å satse sportslig.

Om hotellene kommer samtidig som kommunen "pusser opp" bydelen kan det bli bra. Stadion ligger rett ved hovedveie og selv om det ikke er midt i sentrum er lokaliteten ikke så aller verst. Men jeg tipper kommunen holder ut for at det skal bli noen andre enn Bates som leder disse planene (les: neste eier av Leeds United).

Seint igår kveld etter mange cognac fekk eg sms frå ein kompis om akkurat dette. Eg vart raskt edru for å seie det sånn! Måtte springe heim og sjekke den med ein gong. Leeds United's plans for a massive overhaul of Elland Road must come with the conditions met by certain council proposals.
Club chairman Ken Bates announced plans for a concert hall, casino, two hotels, a club store, shopping arcade, health club and Leeds museum. Ambitious for a club that was saved from different ownership by the strangest of moves and slimmest of margins.
A statement from council leader Andrew Carter warned the club must get approval, and this was by no means a done deal.
"Our priority is to get the best deal for the council-tax payers of Leeds," Carter said. "We expect that whatever development which may or may not take place at Elland Road â€" and they must first of all go through the planning process â€" would be folly if it did not compliment the council's plans.

Jeg har svart tilbake at jeg tror den artikkelen er like på bærtur som det han selv skrev. Gjelden ved administrasjon slettes når man blir kjøpt opp med den summen som bys - pluss eventuelle klausuler - så enkelt mener jeg det er. Siden sommeren har klubben også gått i pluss så vidt meg bekjent.

Council ought to back United to hilt

The phone rang at noon yesterday and the caller, a Norwegian gentleman, was inquiring about the possibility of a party of eight being accommodated at my pub over the four-day period in March when Leeds United have back-to-back home games against Bournemouth and Cheltenham.
This is not untypical. Everybody can sense the revival in Leeds' fortunes and once again the city is set to rock and roll on the back of its football club.
A successful Leeds United means a successful city and I cannot stress this enough.
A few short years ago, when those European campaigns were in full flow, you couldn't find an hotel room or a restaurant table for love nor money when the high-rollers came to town.
All types of businesses benefited considerably from United's success, from pubs, clubs, shops, stores, eateries, taxis, you name it and their recent decline saw the other side of the coin.
I can tell you in all honesty that businesses such as mine simply would not survive without the 25 or so home games which bring people from all over the place into our area.
It is on the back of such weekends that enough money is taken to counteract the fall-off in trade that everybody has experienced.
With this in mind, I have a message for Leeds City Council and it is this: Please stop underestimating and undervaluing the one football club we have in terms of overall importance to the place in which we live and work.
Those who sit on our committees and are involved in the process of decision making are different from the ones who saw the impact that a successful Leeds United has on the city.
Therefore, their views may be a little tarnished.
United don't need obstacles in their way when seeking expansion. They need consideration, help and backing and the council can be sure that anything put into the club will be positively reflected in the welfare of the city and its businesses.
Leeds United are a global brand.
Out there in America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Antipodes the only reason Leeds is known is through its football club.
Let's face it, we have nothing else.
I am a huge admirer of Leeds Rugby, its management structure and the product it puts out there on the pitch, but when you boil it down we're talking about a game which is trans-Pennine rather than trans-world.
Yorkshire cricket, too, is based in Leeds, but other than the odd Test played at Headingley where is the global appeal?
I believe Leeds City Council has some serious conscience-searching to do in terms of how it can help its biggest ambassador.
It can work hand-in-hand with the football club to ensure ongoing benefits all round.

Exclusive: Leeds United will host 2018 World Cup matches - Bates

KEN BATES is confident England will win the right to stage the 2018 World Cup and is determined the city of Leeds will not miss out.
The Football Association officially launched their campaign to stage the finals last year and are likely to face stiff competition from China, America, Russia and Australia plus a joint bid from Belgium and Holland.
Despite that, Bates believes the World Cup will return to this country for the first time since 1966 and is adamant Elland Road will be one of the 12 host venues.
To make that a reality, the United chairman plans to build a new multi-million pound West Stand to raise the capacity to 50,000 and put the stadium on a par with the likes of Sunderland's Stadium of Light and St James' Park, Newcastle.
Bates is, however, at pains to point out that the clock is ticking and that the support of Leeds Council is imperative: "Time is not on our side, but I am determined to build a world class stadium for Leeds.
"If we do get the 2018 World Cup - which I think we will - then obviously the council will want us to be a host city."

Ken Bates will celebrate his third anniversary in charge of Leeds United next week. Here, he outlines to Richard Sutcliffe his vision for the future.
GAZING out of the window in Ken Bates' office at Elland Road on a wet and windy afternoon in January, the view is one of contrast.
In the distance, the lights of the city centre shine brightly with the imposing new 32-storey Bridgewater Place acting as a beacon for the new-found prosperity that has saw vibrant Leeds christened the 'Knightsbridge of the North'.
A world away from this Harvey Nichols existence, however, is Holbeck, a suburb of red brick terraced houses and potholed wasteland that makes it very much a poor relation to the affluent city centre.
It is this down-at-heel suburb that the back of the East Stand at Elland Road looks out on to and with an ugly motorway running through it, the view is distinctly underwhelming. Unless, that is, you are the Leeds United chairman.
Talking exclusively to the Yorkshire Post ahead of next Monday's third anniversary of taking over United, Bates is outlining his vision for the future. And he has plans. Big plans.
Not only is the United chairman wanting to build a brand new multi-million pound West Stand to raise the Elland Road capacity to 50,000, he also has ambitious plans for the stand we are sitting in. Two hotels are on the agenda along with the type of classy shopping arcade that makes the centre of Leeds stand out. Also included in the blueprint is a nightclub, new restaurants and a club museum.
While outlining all this, he suddenly jumps to his feet before beckoningthis correspondent to the window.
He said: "It excites me what can be done. I was ridiculed at Chelsea (when announcing the plans for Chelsea Village) but now West Ham, Reading, Oxford, Derby, Leicester, Bolton and Sheffield United have all adapted that model.
"The key for this club's future is utilising the land 365 days per year. We have to ttract income that is not dependant on how things are going on the field."
Clearly, the Yorkshire Post suggests, Bates is not planning on leaving Elland Road any time soon?
"Of course, I'm not. I have a vision for this area and I want to be able to say to the next man 'follow that'."
At one stage last year, of course, there was a time when it seemed there might not be a "next man". Or, for that matter, a football club at all...
