Kamp 15/12:

JEVONS ON THE MARK
On-loan Bristol City striker Phil Jevons denied Bristol Rovers with a second-half winner to maintain Huddersfield's hoodoo over Paul Trollope's side with a 2-1 win.
evons, who has now hit three goals since joining the West Yorkshire club, struck with a low shot after 55 minutes after Nathan Clarke's free-kick was not cleared.
Rovers had drawn level three minutes earlier when David Pipe cancelled out Ronnie Wallwork's first half opener with a close-range effort.
Wallwork had opened the scoring after five minutes, latching on to Jevons' lay-off before hitting a shot from outside the area that found the back of the net via a deflection.
Huddersfield, who ended a run of three straight league defeats, have not lost to Rovers in the last 10 matches between the sides, a run that stretches back to 1989, but the home side made heavy weather of it in the second half.
Town defender Andy Holdsworth hit the post with a long-range strike before Jevons capitalised on some slack marking from Clarke's free-kick to secure all three points.

Thommo: I'm ready to play my part for Leeds United

ALAN THOMPSON was not intended to be a squad player at Leeds United, but successful clubs can keep doors closed on even the most decorated professionals.
Thompson was symbolic of the blind commitment made by so many of United's players last summer, and Dennis Wise was set on both signing the midfielder and appointing him as the club's captain from the moment Thompson returned to train with Leeds at the beginning of July.

That Leeds took more than five weeks to tie him down to a one-year term was due entirely to the restraints of administration.

But the natural leader in Wise's ranks has discovered rings of steel around United's first team since his recovery from a calf strain at the end of last month. For their last three matches, Thompson's role has been that of a substitute.

His presence on the bench is the direct result of Leeds' unbridled progress through the first half of the League One season.

The fact that Wise is able to turn to Thompson as a replacement for the injured Jonathan Douglas is a reassuring example of the depth of the squad at Elland Road. Every club is asked to cover for absentees; few are able to turn to as experienced a player as United's captain.

The 33-year-old has not disputed Wise's rigid selection policy, which has kept a short rein on players who are short of fitness this season.

When a muscle strain first struck Thompson in September, he admitted himself that a prolonged absence might make automatic selection unlikely on his return. His comeback on this occasion began in the reserves.

But the resumption of his career at Elland Road has fallen at the perfect time with Douglas' knee injury likely to bar him from United's fixtures over Christmas and New Year.

Thompson said: "I see myself as a key player, but I'm not getting any younger. I'm 34 this week and when you reach that age you need to get fit and stay fit â€" otherwise you're not a lot of use to the manager.

"I've had a calf strain and a hamstring strain, and they seemed to come along together. There isn't much you can do about that, but it's not great when you've been in good shape through the summer and through the first couple of weeks of the season.

"That's been frustrating for me personally. I needed to get some proper training done, and to get a few games behind me.

"Last season when we were backs-to-the-wall, the manager would have thrown me straight in because you have to take a few risks when you're under pressure like we were.

"But the team's going well this season so the challenge is to get back into the team, not to walk into it.

"You have to earn the right and the lads who are in there at the minute are doing that. This is when the manager asks you to kick on and give him another option. I'm no different to anyone else.

"We've lost two games and drawn a couple so you'll struggle to pick fault with that. A team in that sort of form picks itself. I don't see a place in the side as a given, and nor do any of the players."

For all the concerns over Thompson's condition, the former England international is still seen as the most fluent passer within Wise's sizeable pack of midfielders, and the most creative influence available to United's manager.

His goal against Southend United on the second weekend of this season was the type of free-kick which Thompson has trademarked, placed perfectly into the corner of goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan's net.

His strike at Walsall on Saturday â€" the effort which earned Leeds a 1-1 draw in the 90th-minute â€" was altogether less intentional.

His setpiece cannoned against the head of Ian Westlake, producing a deflection which gave Walsall's Clayton Ince no chance of blocking the ball.

The fortuitous nature of the goal left Thompson and Westlake to vie for ownership, but Thompson insisted: "I'll be claiming it. I'm about to turn 34 and when you get to that stage you claim every goal you can.

"But whether it's mine or Westie's, it doesn't really matter. We needed a goal and it's got us a point â€" a decent point as well.

"It's nice for me to make an impact. It would have been nicer to have come on with the score at 0-0 and to have had the chance to get a winner, but it was important to make a proper contribution.

"I've got a few more minutes under my belt and I need to stay fit now. Who knows wh
at could happen over the next four or five months?

"The older you get, the harder you need to work, and I think every player would say the same. But I've got four weeks of good, hard work behind me and I feel better for it."

United have shifted away recently from what seemed to be a perpetual habit for late goals during the early stages of the season, but Thompson's deflected effort on Saturday was necessary to avoid a third league defeat against a Walsall side who showed visible signs of the confidence gained from two months of fixtures without defeat.

"There's a lot of steel and grit in the team," said Thompson. "You've seen it against Walsall, but I think we showed those qualities right from the start of the season.

"Alright, the goal's come late. But we've done that a few times, and you get your reward for never saying die. We're going to need that between now and May."

Disley: We need wins to survive

Disley: Keen to win more games

Midfielder Craig Disley knows that Bristol Rovers must capitalise on their games in hand in order to move clear of the relegation zone.
The Pirates are lingering two places above the bottom three after losing 2-1 at Huddersfield on Saturday and Disley has warned his team-mates it is essential they win both their games in hand if they are to maintain their League One status.
Disley told the club's official website: "We're 19th in the table now, and although we've got games in hand it means nothing if we don't win them.
"We don't want to be where we are, looking over our shoulders at this stage of the season and it's not nice waking up on a Sunday and seeing the table in the paper showing us one point off the relegation zone.
"That shouldn't be accepted by anyone. We feel we're more than good enough not to be down there, and we need to make sure we bounce back from this and move towards a position closer to where we feel we should be."

Trollope: Expects tough test

Trollope wary of Leeds threat

Manager Paul Trollope believes Bristol Rovers will come up against the best strikeforce in League One when they face Leeds on Saturday.
Jermaine Beckford, the division's top scorer, and Tresor Kandol have netted 21 league goals between them this season.
Trollope said: "By all accounts, and from the reports that we have had on them this season, their strikers and forward players are the best in the division.
"They have scored a lot more goals than anyone else and they have scored more home goals than anyone else as well."
Rovers lost the reverse fixture at the Memorial Stadium 3-0 in September, and Trollope added: "Although they have some quality players and they are a tough proposition at home, we will be looking to put that scoreline right.
"We felt a bit hard done by earlier this season because we thought we did quite well in that game."

Harry targets festive cheer

Assistant Manager Dave Bassett is looking for the Whites to back-up their promotion credentials with a sackful of points this Christmas. After seeing the side bounce back from a difficult November by taking seven points from the last nine, 'Harry' is keen than the club maintain momentum in their assault on the automatic promotion positions.
'November was a funny month with two wins and two defeats in the league,' he said. 'We suffered the first defeat at Carlisle - one was probably due anyway because it is very difficult to go all the way without losing sometime - and the cup ties added to the situation because we probably expected to beat Hereford and Bury. But as much as it would have been nice to be in the JPT and FA Cup we haven't got the distractions now, we can now concentrate on the league.'
'It's been an encouraging start, but it's Christmas now. There's points to be had and we have to make sure we come out in a good position.' Bassett recognised that in their previous outing at Walsall the Saddlers had increased their performance levels. 'It was another one of those situations where the opposition raised their game. We know and expect that. Some of the opponents I've seen before we've played them look far different from when they play us the following week. Sometimes they struggle the game afterwards as well because they put so much in against us.'
'We always say to the players this is a problem facing Leeds United, because everyone treats it as a final. It is the biggest and best game of their season. Every game is like and FA Cup first round tie, and we accept that. We have Premier League support, but no team has a divine right to be anywhere, and we have to match these teams.'

Rovers fear Leeds United strike force

Tresor Kandol

The return of Tresor Kandol on Saturday will reunite League One's most destructive strikeforce, and strengthen Paul Trollope's belief that Leeds United are five months away from leaving the division.
Kandol served a one-match ban last weekend, and the effect of his absence was stressed by United's hesitant performance at Walsall. The forward can expect an immediate recall against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, Leeds' final match before Christmas, but at least one man at Elland Road would have preferred to see Kandol's suspension stretch to a second game.
Trollope witnessed the value of Dennis Wise's strikers at the Memorial Stadium in September when his Bristol Rovers' team were soundly beaten but not outplayed.
A genuinely competitive game was settled by two goals from Jermaine Beckford - including a marvellous overhead kick in injury-time - and a sharp finish from Kandol, whose clinical strike in the 77th minute assisted a 3-0 victory.
Trollope described the forwards as "the difference" in Bristol, and United's results before and after their visit to the Memorial Stadium have maintained his expectation that one of three promotions from League One this season will be earned by Leeds. His mission at Elland Road on Saturday will be to briefly upset the apple cart.
"I know about their home record, and it's magnificent," said Trollope.
"I've be certain for a while that Leeds will be promoted at the end of the season, and if we're going to hinder that slightly this weekend then the one thing I have to stress to my players is the importance of taking our chances.
"That was the only difference in September. We competed well and dominated them at times but we didn't make the most of our opportunities and their finishing was deadly. The big advantage that Leeds have over everyone else is their quality inside the box. It's outstanding at this level.
"Kandol and Beckford are very difficult to handle but it goes deeper than that. The two or three strikers they've got on the bench are also better than anything else in this division, and they're not starting games. It all adds up to the conclusion that Leeds will be heading out of this division shortly.
"But although their results at Elland Road have been excellent, it doesn't sound like they've controlled every game. Teams can go there and play, and even dominate Leeds at times. We won't be lacking ambition."
The assessment of United's performances at home is, when set against their record of nine wins from 10 matches, a little critical. It is, however, an accurate reflection of how substance over style has driven Leeds up their division this season.
Wise's players have made hard work of certain fixtures at Elland Road, yet the outcome has been so predictable that winning has become a routine. Only in cup competitions has the club's facade broken, and the solid passage of results which led Rovers into September's game with confidence has deserted Trollope's squad ahead of Saturday's match.
After four wins from 17 matches, Rovers are sitting a point clear of League One's relegation places. It has been as many expected after the club emerged from League Two through the play-offs last season, but Trollope has never allowed himself to fear that their loss of form will be permanent.
"We need to score more goals, and I'm well aware of that, but we're a good side on our day," he said. "In many ways our problem is Leeds United's strength, and it would be nice to have the resources that they do.
"But to be fair to Dennis Wise, he inherited some very good players and added some very good players, and most of his signings seem to have come off. Once they got going, you knew it was only a matter of time before they worked their way into the top six. I'm part of the group which feels that a club with as much history and many supporters as Leeds deserves to be playing at a higher level.
"I've actually watched Dennis' career as a manager as closely as anyone because I'm a Swindon lad born-and-bred. He did well there, and you shouldn't underestimate the job he's doing at Leeds. I know his squad's excellent but that's only half the battle."
Rovers will travel north with around 3,000 supporters on Saturday, an away attendance which will dilute an atmosphere which has been weighted entirely in United's favour this season.
Leeds' last home fixture against Huddersfield Town produced a capactity crowd, but Trollope said: "We're not short of experience for the occasion.
"We played in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final last season and the play-off final, and we came through a big derby against Bristol City. We'll need to keep out heads at Elland Road and to show the right, positive attitude.
"I played at Elland Road in my final appearance for Derby County (in 1997) and we were 3-0 up after half-an-hour. Having said that, we ended up losing 4-3. It would be nice to avoid that kind of game again."

Midfield poser for boss Wise

Tresor Kandol will be recalled to Leeds United's starting line-up tomorrow as the club look to record their 10th home victory of the League One season.
Kandol served a one-match ban â€" his second of the term â€" during last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Walsall, but United missed his presence up front and he is expect to be reunited with Jermaine Beckford against Bristol Rovers at Elland Road.
Kandol's return would see Leon Constantine drop to the bench but Mark De Vries has been ruled out for four weeks with a groin strain, and the problem may bring the Dutch forward to the end of his second loan spell from Leicester City.
Manager Dennis Wise will be forced to restructure his midfield following the injury to Jonathan Douglas which seems likely to sideline United's vice-captain until the closing weeks of the season.
Douglas twisted a knee at Walsall and will discover on Monday whether he requires surgery.
Wise is already predicting a three-month absence for the Irishman, and Alan Thompson and Jonathan Howson are competing to fill the hole in midfield tomorrow. Meanwhile Portuguese wide man Filipe Da Costa sustained a hamstring strain during the reserves' victory over Grimsby in midweek.
The winger was, in any case, unlikely to be involved in the squad having failedto impress during the early months of his stay in West Yorkshire.

'Leeds will be promoted' - Bristol Rovers boss

When Leeds United came away from Bristol Rovers Memorial Ground back in September a morale-boosting 3-0 victory only told half of the story. In truth the Pirates had matched the Whites for long periods of a competitive affair, but it was United's clinical finishing which proved the difference between the two sides. Rovers boss Paul Trollope bring his side to Elland Road this weekend, and has seen nothing since the previous meeting to change his opinion that Leeds will gain promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
'I know about their home record, and it's magnificent,' he said. 'I've been certain for a while that Leeds will be promoted at the end of the season, and if we're going to hinder that slightly this weekend then the one thing I have to stress to my players is the importance of taking chances. That was the only difference in September. We competed well and dominated them at times but we didn't make the most of our opportunities and their finishing was deadly. TRIO RETURN TO PIRATES SQUAD

Steve Elliott and Richard Walker return to Bristol Rovers' squad for the trip to Leeds - while Sean Rigg is also expected to be included.
Elliott and Walker have finally served three-match suspensions, with their absence prolonged by the postponement of Rovers' home games against Cheltenham and Swansea earlier this month, while Rigg has recovered from the hamstring strain he suffered in the defeat at Swindon.
Defensive duo Byron Anthony and Ryan Green remain sidelined with respective foot and jaw problems.
Ahead of the trip to Yorkshire, first-team coach Paul Trollope said: "I know about their home record, and it is magnificent.
"But although their results at Elland Road have been excellent, it doesn't sound like they have controlled every game. Teams can go there and play and even dominate Leeds at times, and we won't be lacking ambition."

United need a victory tonic for the tests ahead

Peter Lorimer
Talking Soccer

The point gained by Leeds United at Walsall last week could prove invaluable in this season's final reckoning.
We were up against a big, strong side on a long unbeaten run and they must have thought they had it in the bag with their late goal.
But, as many teams have done, they reckoned without United's staying power and the kind of tactic which makes Dennis Wise a rare breed in the managerial ranks.
One of the things that has impressed me most about his leadership skills is that where many will happily settle for a draw he simply doesn't entertain the idea.
He wants to win games and finishing with four strikers on the park not only surprises the opposition, it can pay huge dividends.
At Walsall the last-gasp goal actually came from the midfield battalion and this time it brought the one point and not all three.
But their insistence on playing right to the final whistle is throwing up huge bonuses in terms of points on the board, and long may that continue.
What was very evident at Walsall was how much we missed the power of Tresor Kandol up front.
Here's a guy who puts himself about and shows great physical strength, and the home central defensive pairing had a much quieter afternoon than would have been the case if he had been in the line-up.
There's a lesson here for Kandol and his strike partner Jermaine Beckford, both of whom are inclined to get involved in verbal exchanges.
They're the most potent strikeforce in the division and United can ill-afford to be without either or both of them. So it is imperative that they cut out the bookings.
Neither is much good to the team if they're on the sidelines, so the employment of a bit of common sense would do everybody some good.
Tomorrow Bristol Rovers are the visitors to Elland Road and, given the severity of the rest of the festive programme, it is vital for Leeds that they tuck another victory under their belts.
I thought we were a little flattered by the 3-0 scoreline when we played Rovers at their place.
They were a nice side intent on playing some attractive football and it's a surprise to me that they are so low down the league table.
They'll no doubt give us a run for our money but I'm fully expecting the home win that would offset potential problems on the road at Hartlepool and Swansea.
It's getting to that time of year when you take more notice of what's happening to the clubs around you in the table and I see the top two, Swansea and Carlisle, face each other tomorrow.
This is the kind of match you want to finish in a draw, so that both teams lose two points and give you a chance to cash in.
If, at the end of the month, we are in no worse position than we are at the moment then I will really start to become excited about our promotion prospects.
Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas.

Tell me - I've got to know
Tell me - Tell me before I go
Does that flame still burn, does that fire still glow
Or has it died out and melted like the snow
Tell me  Tell me
